Too many people lack the skills and credentials to participate meaningfully in the global economy. This is caused by problems at every stage of our education pipeline, from inadequate school access to low graduation rates. The United Nations estimates that 263 million children, including half of all refugee children, are not in school. In the United States alone, 55% of college students never earn a diploma. These challenges will be exacerbated in the near term by the global refugee crisis and in the long term by automation as new industries are created and old jobs made obsolete.
For many of the millions shut out of the modern economy, like girls in oppressive societies, laid-off workers, refugees, and prisoners, traditional routes to employment are out of reach. Cost, time constraints, and social barriers limit access. Even those with degrees are often underemployed, as curricula are disconnected from employers’ needs. Online learning materials are becoming widely accessible, but they are not yet connected directly to economic empowerment.
There have been many attempts to address aspects of this problem, but the solutions are often piecemeal, hard to scale, expensive, or locale-specific.
Solving this problem is imperative for millions who want a better life for themselves and their families; for employers, who need an increasingly skilled entry-level workforce; for educational institutions, who want to help more people achieve their potential; and for society at large, as disenfranchisement and underemployment breed discontent, instability, and extremism.
We plan to develop internationally-recognized diplomas that provide direct access to economic and educational opportunities. To support this, we will create free content and tools to help people earn our diplomas at their own pace, regardless of their incoming skills.
An Afghan girl forbidden by the Taliban from attending school will now be able to study on her mobile phone, gain admission to a top university, and become a physicist. A father in Detroit who dropped out of high school will demonstrate his skills and work ethic to earn an entry-level job that supports his family. A school leader in Kenya will use these resources to ensure her students receive a rigorous education with international relevance.
Khan Academy is already used by more than 100 million people around the world every year. These diplomas will connect current and future Khan Academy learners, including those in underserved communities and war-torn regions, to real economic opportunities.
We will develop the diplomas in close partnership with educational institutions and employers to ensure relevance. In addition to academic skills, we will recognize metacognitive skills, like perseverance, not measured by traditional degrees. Unlike other offerings, we will track job placement and performance to measure the efficacy of the diplomas and continuously improve them. Tools will enable teachers and mentors to track learners’ progress and provide support. The initial release will be available in several major languages.
Together, we can unlock the potential of hundreds of millions of people for generations to come.
I can't explain how I exited I was when I was watching this video a few minutes ago. This is a brilliant idea that come from the mind of an unselfish organization that has benefit millions of people for free. In this extremely greedy world we need people like this, we need people who has a passion for helping, people who can offer an opportunity without any self-interest, people that believes in people and not only in money. I can see that this idea has a great potential in reducing global extreme poverty by giving low income people an opportunity to study and have a better job instead of going into very low paying jobs, crime, prostitution, etc. I really wish I could join Khan Academy to make this idea possible, mean while I will share and share this video!

Sal Khan has come up with a revolutionary idea that makes possible the advancement of any willing person no matter their financial situation to become a superiorly educated individual. Thus opening doors to those for whom traditionally would be closed, in the past education was often granted only to those of the wealthy which served an elitist type society. Until, now things really haven't changed that much, college and university costs are increasing, meanwhile the average median income for a single parent is an abysmal $24,000 annually. Thanks to Sal's superlative academy we all now have the quintessential means in which to succeed in becoming an erudite, prosperous and even possibly a juggernaut.
I absolutely HATE to be that guy, but this is a steep hill to climb. Colleges are like businesses, you pay them in exchange for their services and food and what not. If you can get a diploma from the comfort of your (pretty messy in my case) computer desk at home, on your own time, FOR FREE, colleges will fight that tooth and nail.
I'm still giving you $35 for it tough.

I came across this channel to help me with my microeconomics project. I must say I didn't know about the purpose of Khan Academy and I am so happy and astonished by this great way of outreach. This in a way matches my goal, which is reaching out to those who don't have education and giving them education, whether it is adults or students. The videos are great and help a lot and I must say this is an amazing way to stretch education. I'm praying for you guys and hoping God works through you guys! So what you're saying is ANYONE can get a world class higher education diploma. In other words... if I had a piece of gold that was the size of Mount Kilimanjaro... gold would still have value? If EVERYONE can have a world class higher education diploma what does this do to the value of that diploma? Be honest... the fact that millions (and millions) of people lack the "skills" and "credentials" necessary to create a global economy factually gives the people that DO possess the "skills" and "credentials" the ability to create a global economy the incentive. Otherwise the "global economy" exists solely based on the fact that "everyone" has the necessary skills to create an economy... and they quite simply do not.
The largest hurdle to this that I see in the US is that teachers and their associations do not want to change the status quo. They prefer to teach to recognition only because teaching to mastery would require them to invest more time into each student. Another problem I have seen is that educators teach the way they were taught, which in traditional education, is to recognition. That's why there are report cards with grades on them. A subject taught to mastery does not need a grade just a pass or try again.
An example of a class taught to mastery is a SCUBA class. SCUBA divers must master the skills required to dive properly or risk injury or death. Mastery is a prerequisite to being certified to dive without professional supervision.
What would happen if a SCUBA class was taught to recognition standards?
Let's say, for simplicity sake, that to pass a SCUBA class a score of 75% is required. A class of 4 new divers comes along and 3 of them get 100%, but the 4th just barely passes with the minimum of 75%, but he passes. Now those 4 divers go out diving after being certified. That 4th diver, who didn't understand 25% of the material, encounters a problem that was covered in that 25%. The 4th diver ends up panicking and drowning. During the investigation to the diver's death the police ask the SCUBA Instructor why the certification was awarded, and the Instructor points to the divers score and says "75% is considered passing".
What if the instructor was only proficient in teaching 75% of the material so all of the students were missing the 25%?
Teaching to mastery is the only way to ensure the subject is understood and can be built on without gaps.
If tomorrows teachers are taught to mastery and taught how to teach to mastery then our education system will be masterful.
I've heard from all my friends in public school and over half of them use KH to help them with their school because it describes it better and helps them learn it faster then any kind of book or homework.
Also 100% of the time when I asked them which they would rather it would be KH over their schools.

Bringing world class education to anyone, anywhere, in truly easy to understand and follow format where you can move at your own pace. That's the biggest revolution there's been in education in like 150years+. A truly noble cause that deserves to be freed from what causes most inequality to those seeking to educate themselves: money and location.
How come Khan isn't minister of Education ? He's doing more than most in that field...
I understand the need for an initiative of this nature as I am working on a similar initiative to provide skill development to working executives, job seekers, students appearing for competitive examinations and home makers. I work with an NGO that serves the people in Myanmar. I have watched many Khan academy video's and feel this program would be of great value if we could get internet and computers into the villages we serve. The next problem I encounter is the practicing of the concepts. Is there a set of "worksheet" on line that allow a student to practice the problems they learn to solve in the videos. These are very poor villages and textbooks are not available. We could have individual white boards or notebooks to practice but it would be nice to have problem sets. Any suggestions?
Great idea and great company to bring it to fruition. A startup company would not be able to handle the sheer volume, but Khan Academy with its established partnerships with colleges, high schools and experienced base would.
What concerns is that like the F35 was doomed by trying to incorporate all of the expectations of different specialized jets into one, would Khan Academy be able to draft curriculums which would deliver significant results in specialized fields. Like Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. And not just make mechanical and industrial combined into one engineering degree. Likewise, there are thousands of degrees and not all translate to marketable jobs, how will they decided which to pursue and which not? This will be a big question as this evolves since world education will shift world progress in big waves. If you only have certain degrees we may have excess supplies in those fields causing massive career changes like pay cuts or layoffs.

In June 2017, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index announced a long-awaited decision it would add stocks to its index. According to CNBC, MSCI will add 222 China A Large Cap stocks to its benchmark emerging markets index gradually beginning in 2018. The MSCI website reveals the stocks it will list include the Bank of China, China Merchants Bank, Guotai Junan, Ping An Insurance, according to a document on Tsingtao Brewery, SAIC Motor, Suning Commerce and Spring Airlines.

Cumulative preferred stock includes a provision that requires the company to pay preferred shareholders all dividends, including those that were omitted in the past, before the common shareholders are able to receive their dividend payments.
Non-cumulative preferred stock does not issue any omitted or unpaid dividends. If the company chooses not to pay dividends in any given year, the shareholders of the non-cumulative preferred stock have no right or power to claim such forgone dividends at any time in the future.
Participating preferred stock provides its shareholders with the right to be paid dividends in an amount equal to the generally specified rate of preferred dividends, plus an additional dividend based on a predetermined condition. This additional dividend is typically designed to be paid out only if the amount of dividends received by common shareholders is greater than a predetermined per-share amount. If the company is liquidated, participating preferred shareholders may also have the right to be paid back the purchasing price of the stock as well as a pro-rata share of remaining proceeds received by common shareholders.
