Training and development of employees for improved performance. It's extremely important for business owners and leaders to recognize the importance of training and development of their employees and to take a proactive approach. Every company has competition, whether local or global. Even if you don't have competition because your product is so unique and new, you are probably competing with yourself and against time and money. You can only develop a product so long before you run out of both. Training and Development Training and development is more important than ever for your organization to stay competitive and survive. Training and development challenges employees to grow and improve. We all have untapped potential that is waiting to be unleashed, and this can be directed towards activities that will have a high impact on the performance of the organization. Employees who do not receive training and development may become resistant to change and become stagnant. This can really have a negative impact on performance since technology is driving so many changes in work methods. Being Proactive Taking a proactive approach to employee training and development is best done by first setting goals for the organization and department. This will help you to determine where current skill levels of employees may be challenged towards achieving these goals and thus you can develop a training plan for the department an individual. Hard and Soft Skills When developing a training plan is important to look at the total person. We often breaks skills and to types, hard and soft. Hard skills are those that permit us to complete a task or activity, such as running a computer program operating machine, etc. A soft skill is a behavior that determines how an employee will approach a task and interact with others. This is often neglected when looking at training needs, but is extremely important for employee and team performance. Teamwork If you want to develop teamwork in your organization and department people must learn specific interpersonal skills so that discussions can take place on how to improve things towards goal achievement. Highly evolved teams can become autonomous in problem-solving, and continuously improving work processes on their own. One good example are the telephone companies here in Canada. Over the years, most of them have trained their employees on better customer service habits and on selling. I've noticed when calling the administrative department about a billing issue that the person handling my issue always try to upsell me to an additional service. This is obviously a behavior that was learned from a proactive organization. We've all had the experience of going into a store or restaurant and were served by staff members. The other ones who create a better customer experience by how they treat you the customer. Of course hiring the right person with the right attitude and personality is fundamental, but training people on the operations and how you expect them to behave is equally as important. Aging Workforce As the working population gets older is extremely important for organizations to continuously train and develop their employees in order for people to remain flexible, open positive and creative. This will allow the organization to meet its growth objectives and retain skilled talent. Initiative One of the key benefits from the training and development of employees is increased self-confidence and self-esteem. When people feel they are better equipped to tackle new tasks and use more of their abilities, they feel more confident. People with higher self-confidence and self-esteem take more risks, make more decisions and solve problems on their own. This leads to greater initiative and thus saves the manager time to focus on growth and improvement opportunities. Arnold disapproves: "Today, when I go in the gymnasium, I don't see any of the kids learning about the clean and press, or the snatch, or the upright row from the floor." It comes from decades of continued interest and expertise in the industry, and from the hard-earned knowledge that it doesn't take fancy machines or off-the-wall programming to become arguably the best bodybuilder in history. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye." Back: "For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end." Arms: Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. "For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later." Shoulders: Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses." Legs "The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs," says Arnold. "I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls." The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence. Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships. Bertrand Moingeon holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and is a qualified Ph.D. supervisor. Re-elected four times running by his peers to manage HEC Executive Education for a total period of 16 years, he also served as Deputy Dean of HEC Paris. A member of GREGHEC-CNRS, a former visiting professor at Harvard Business School, he is the author of over eighty articles and chapters primarily on the subjects of change management, organizational learning and strategic innovation. He has also published several books, notably: Organizational Learning and Competitive Advantage (with Amy Edmondson, Professor at Harvard Business School), and Corporate and Organizational Identities (with Guillaume Soenen). He is currently carrying out research projects on these topics as well as on stakeholders experience management. In synergy with his research activities, he has taught in numerous Executive Education programmes and supported a wide variety of corporations in France and abroad. He is the Director of HEC Europe Institute, of which Noëlle Lenoir, former French minister, is president. Bridging strategy and corporate social responsibility, he published with Muhammad Yunus (founder of the Grameen Bank and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize) and Laurence Lehmann-Ortega several articles on the Social Business Model. While Moingeon believes that organizations should invest some of the budget in training and development, he talks about the larger issue of how organizations need to make the most of the learning opportunities on the job so that every problem becomes a learning opportunity. https://learningnews.com/ftie2018 This year, the five annual predictions for the global Learning & Development sector from Financial Times | IE Business School Corporate Learning Alliance follow the general view that technology – in the forms of machine leaning, artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) – will be a dominant force. But it won’t all be about AI in 2018. The FT | IE Corporate Learning Alliance’s five predictions are: 1. The return of the middle manager. While much focus has been placed on leadership skills and the ‘voice from the top’, the under-appreciated and often-maligned middle manager will come back in vogue and be recognised for an increasingly rare yet innate ability: managing other people. 2. The death of authenticity. It is often said that, if you can fake authenticity, you’ve got it made. In 2018, many more managers will stop trying to ‘be themselves’. This will be a relief for staff who either did not like their line manager’s true nature or never believed the act in the first place. It will be replaced, hopefully, by a return to management basics – clear communication, constructive feedback and conflict resolution. 3. Individual learning for career development. Experience-based, flexible, individualised learning –and the means to transfer knowledge easily into professional life – will become stronger features of learning and development programmes. Concepts of agility, disruption, digitalisation – while perhaps wearing thin through over-use – will continue to be part of the management lexicon and rationales for executive learning. 4. Gen Z hype. In 2018, so-called Generation Z, born around the millennium, will start to enter the workplace. Conferences, research papers and thought leadership articles will be devoted to this new phenomenon. Despite the hype, they will say very little different from what was once said about Millennials, Generation X and Baby Boomers when they were young. 5. Embracing machine learning. Despite a certain scepticism about the motives behind concepts like artificial intelligence (AI), greater acceptance of machine learning and a closer understanding of AI will help leaders manage their companies better in 2018. The AI ‘holy grail’ is strategic foresight: stronger insights into customer needs, better market-facing propositions, improved operations, improved management skills – all helping a company to get ahead of its competitors.
