Seeds are the genesis of most every grain and vegetable crop every year. From the humble saved seed, civilizations have been anchored and thrived, while unique, regional foods flourished. Just a few decades ago, the act of seed saving was something every farmer knew. But this skill is quickly vanishing and taking regional food diversity with it. However, a movement involving communities and farmers across Wyoming and beyond is working to revive this essential practice - and the flavor, beauty and adventure that comes with it. We’ll explore a seed library and meet market farmers stewarding regionally adapted seeds passed down through generations.

The Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook, an encyclopedic volume, which in 2011 offered 13,876 unique varieties (and 21,711 total listings) to members from members, is one of the greatest sources of heirloom varieties in the world. The yearbook is a meeting place where gardeners share what they have grown, and learn from others with similar interests. However, it can be intimidating to use if you are new to the organization. In this workshop you will learn how to navigate and select varieties from the online and print Yearbook and proper etiquette for requesting seed from other members.

Hybrid crop varieties have been hailed by many seed companies as marvels of modern plant breeding that will give us quality, disease resistance, uniformity, and yield that is far beyond what is possible with an of the open-pollinated (OP) alternatives that are on the market. Is there something magical in their ability to be superior to standard varieties? Are hybrids really better or is it just hype? Why do many OP varieties have better flavor, aroma, or texture than hybrids? In this talk, John Navazio will contrast the cultural and economic biases that contributed to the success of hybrids in the last century with the ecologically dynamic OP crop varieties that are based on genetic resiliency and adaptive advantage to the varied environmental conditions that are currently being developed by several visionary breeders.
