Creating Sustainable Teacher Career Trajectories: A 21st Century Imperative

01:25:10
The greatest challenge to staffing the nation's classrooms with the most motivated, highly qualified teachers is making teaching an attractive profession with career opportunities for those who seek those challenges. According to The New Teacher Project, currently the 20 percent of teachers deemed irreplaceable due to their success, actually end up leaving their schools due to neglect and inattention. In this report, NNSTOY and Pearson offer a new vision of teacher career pathways for the 21st century that holds promise for recruiting and retaining excellent teachers who further student learning. The report takes a close look at the conditions necessary to develop sustainable teacher career pathways in order to make teaching a more attractive career option for a new generation of teachers. Please join a distinguished panel of educators, policymakers, and researchers to examine the ideas presented in this paper and their potential impact on the teaching profession.

Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson

11:07
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.

'A Lot of Inadequate' Teaching of English-Learners

01:24
Patricia Gándara, a research professor and co-director of the Civil Rights Projects at the University of California, Los Angeles, says that an overemphasis on English-language-learner reclassification in research and classrooms has hamstrung efforts to answer an important question: What does it take to be a competent, high-quality teacher for ELLs? Reclassification is important, but it shouldn’t be the end goal; how students benefit from the English-learners programs should take precedence, Gándara argues. Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

10 Teachers You Won't Believe Exist

You'd never want to miss school with these teachers in the classroom! Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg When we think of teachers, we often don’t think of people who are hot and gorgeous. We tend to think of teachers as people who don’t put a lot of focus into their looks and are more worried about educating the future of the world. In fact, there are running jokes dedicated to how teachers are usually less attractive than the general population. However, just as the population is diverse in their looks, so are teachers. While it seems that “hot” teachers are rare, they do exist. Yet, it seems that if we are blessed with a good looking teacher, it actually might be more detrimental to the students’ grades. Instead of being focused on their studies, you may have students who are playing out fantasies in their heads and imagining things about their teacher that we dare not elaborate on. Because of a Teacher (A Tribute to All of Those Making a Difference)

03:18
Hey teachers, thanks for all that you do. This is a short, inspirational video to say "thanks." Note that I didn't separate out "general education" from ELL and special education because I believe that special education teachers also teach math, science, reading, writing, life skills, etc. TRANSCRIPT: Right now, there’s a kindergarten teacher perusing the aisles of Target. Even though he still has two more weeks of summer break, he is already dreaming up ways to make his students feel welcome. His classroom will be a refuge. For a few kids, it will be the only place where they truly feel safe. Because of a teacher. There’s a language arts teacher who will take a week and give up her lunch period – those blessed 26 minutes to scarf down a meal – in order to help a student learn how to read. And although the progress is slow, he will become a reader. Because of a teacher. There's a math teacher who will have a room full of kids who claim that they’re “just not good at math.” By the end of the year, his kids will be geeking out over ways to solve complex problems. They’ll see that math can be creative and even fun. And they will become problem-solvers. Because of a teacher. There’s a science teacher who will inspire her students to chase after their questions and on one afternoon they’ll be so excited about their experiments that they won’t even notice the bell ring. And they will become scientists . . . Because of a teacher. There are history teachers who will inspire students to record history and a group of PE teachers who will encourage kids to get more active. There are technology teachers who will help kids send their work to the world and fine arts teachers who will help kids find their creative voice. There are foreign language teachers who will be helping kids communicate globally and CTE teachers who will help prepare kids for all kinds of jobs And there’s this teacher librarian who will see the students as children and not data. He’s creating a makerspace while also inspiring kids to fall in love with reading. And they will become life-long learners . . . Because of a teacher. And right now, there's a 4th-grade teacher with a scribbled up yellow legal pad. She’s dreaming up wild new projects. And even though she jokes about not wanting to go back, she is secretly excited about meeting her new group students. This is her 27th year and she’s still taking creative risks. To her, it’s no big deal. It’s what she does. But it’s a big deal to her students. To them, she is a hero. This year, she will make her students' world epic, like she always does. They will remember her forever and she will change the world in ways that she cannot even fathom. And all of this will happen . . . Because of a teacher.

Research Defined: What is research? How do you recognize a research article?

Can you tell if your article is a Research article? If you answered no to either of these questions you are in danger of failing and you really need to watch this video. The term "research" can be confusing because it is used by different people to mean different things. Simply looking up the term "research" in a dictionary won't help you. The Dictionary defines the term research in a few ways that do not relate to what your professor means. The definition that states research is a careful study aimed at discovering new knowledge about something is closer, but it will not get you through your research class. Researchers do a lot more than simply gathering or searching for information. Research is defined by academics as a logical, systematic, in-depth and rigorous investigation of a question or problem. This investigation is conceptualised, designed and carried out using specific procedures supported by theory and evidence in order to maintain quality results. Many kinds of research exist. For example, researchers may conduct experiments or interviews depending on the type of research being done. Quality Research articles can be found in peer reviewed journals. Remember that editorials, commentaries and theoretical articles that you may find in peer-reviewed journals are not research. Some are supported by research, but are not considered research themselves. Research articles have a specific layout that contains key information about a study that was done. They are organised into four main sections including an Introduction section, design section, Results or findings section and finally the discussion section. Sometimes these sections will have slightly different names but they contain the same information. For example, the terms Methods, Methodology, and Design are often interchanged as the heading for the section that tells you about the decisions the researcher made when planning and carrying out the study. Another good thing to note is that quantitative research papers will often use the word results whereas qualitative research papers will often use the word findings for the section of the paper that contains what was discovered. To make things even more confusing there are different kinds of studies out there that are held to different standards. That is why your teacher doesn't want you to just use anything that calls itself research. In university, teachers want you to find a specific, high quality kind of research article. That is why they want you to use the school's library databases to find articles in peer-reviewed journals. It is possible to find the kind of research your professor is looking for through google but you need more skill to sort through what you find there. Once you find something good you may or may not have access to the full article ... So, especially if you are a beginner it is safer to go to your library's databases to search peer reviewed articles. Many assignments in nursing will ask you to find and use research articles. Sometimes it can be tricky to decide if an article you have found is a research article or one of the other types of articles out there. What do you think is the best way to tell the difference between a research article and a non research article? Post your tips below. Thank you for watching.

This Math Teacher Was So Hot He Made His Students Swoon— Now He’s Got The World Weak At The Knees

07:32
There used to be a time when you could either be smart or beautiful – the idea of being both at the same time was unheard of. Where d’ya think the plot of Zoolander came from? But thankfully, gone are the days where intelligence and a desire to pursue it meant you were an unsightly nerd. Indeed, smart is the new sexy! And no one proves that better than Pietro Boselli, since the Italian 28-year-old is both a devastatingly clever and devastatingly hot math teacher. So, let’s hear his story… Boselli was marked out for his good looks pretty early in life; in 1994, when he was aged just six, Giorgio Armani discovered him and set him on the path to modeling stardom. In fact, by the following year he’d already netted himself an Armani Junior campaign and appeared on the back cover of Vogue Bambini. But Boselli would grow up to be definitely more than just a pretty face. As he got older, then, Boselli could have easily pursued lucrative gigs in the fashion world. But that didn’t take into account a burgeoning interest in subjects that would soon become a passion: math and science. It was at 16, moreover, that he read The Evolution of Physics, co-written by Albert Einstein, and knew he’d found his future career path. ►For more articles visit: http://scribol.com ►For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] ********************** ►Support our channel PATREON: https://goo.gl/HJbzyf Thanks To Our Patreons Salami L. The REAL Reason Teachers Are Always Sick

Become an Audiologist or SLP & Reward Yourself with a Career that Helps Others

13:04
www.asha.org/careers Audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLP) discuss rewards of the professions and the joy they receive by helping people to communicate. Julie Martinez Verhoff | Director of Audiology at the River School; Washington DC Julie discusses being an audiologist at the River School. When having a conversation with a child who was born deaf, she's amazed and feels rewarded knowing that she's a part of that process. As a mentor, she trains doctorial audiology students. One student—Jennifer—was diagnosed with a hearing loss when she was five years old. Students love when they come into the clinic and see her and her hearing aid. They say, "You wear a hearing aid, so do I." Mackenzie Fama | Clinical SLP at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital Mackenzie discusses being on MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital's stroke team, as well as working with patient's on other teams, such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or cardiac rehabilitation. She talks about her unpredictable schedule and the flexibility of being able to work with individuals on speech and language disorders, swallowing disorders, and cognitive impairments. She recommends the SLP field to anyone considering it, since it pulls from a variety of backgrounds and is so diverse. Whether someone's interest is working with kids or adults; in a school or hospital setting, or private practice; there's something for everyone. Charles Coward | SLP and Manager at Connections Therapy Center Charles enjoys working with younger populations most because they're going through different developmental stages, and he's able to make an impact that will last throughout their lives. He believes SLP is important because everyone has a right or need to communicate. In the future, Charles sees himself working in theatre or film, teaching actors ways to improve their articulation. Charles works with a young boy—Donovan—who has a bubbly personality, but is non-verbal. He works closely with Donovan to consistently use the sign for 'please' and teaches him the sign for 'apple.' Chizuko Tamaki | Audiologist at Professional Hearing Services; Falls Church, Virginia Being an audiologist is fun and rewarding for Chizuko. She works with one patient who came to her for a dizziness and balance evaluation. Doing a hearing test, then videonystagmography (VNG), she always tries to explain what's going to happen because it eases patients' tension and makes them feel more comfortable with what they're going through. Chizuko talks about her future in five years; possibly wanting to move her career in a different direction or to a more advanced level. With so many opportunities in audiology, she doesn't feel limited. Martine Ellie | Clinic Director at the Howard University Speech and Hearing Clinic Martine teaches graduate and undergraduate SLP students clinical practicum courses to teach them how to apply theory into working with actual clients. She decided to become a SLP because she always wanting to do something that would make a difference in peoples' lives. She talks about her day; either teaching classes, supervising students working with clients, and doing community outreach activities. She also talks about how ASHA is a vital part of everything she does in her professional life—certification, professional development, policy statements, and advocacy. James Brinton | SLP at the Katherine Thomas High School; Rockville, Maryland James discusses the most rewarding thing about being a SLP—working with adolescents and helping them learn to be successful. He works with high-schoolers with moderate to severe learning disabilities because it's important for them to have the skills to transition out of high school into adulthood. ASHA supports him by providing scholarly articles to read, and keeping him connected to other professionals in his field. With the experience he's gained he hopes to get a strong clinical foundation and either someday open up his own speech practice or return to a university to teach and supervise clinically. Davetrina Seles Gadson | Speech-Language Pathologist Davetrina became a SLP because she knew there was diversity in the field. She knew she'd have the opportunity to help people communicate. One thing she enjoys about her day is that it's not routine. From working with patients with voice disorders to neurological disabilities to swallowing; sometimes going on community outings or working with other therapists to make sure they're treating the entire patient; there's always something new. She's also had the opportunity to work as a travel SLP; living in Chicago and Dallas.
California Voters to Decide How Schools Teach English-Learners

07:11
In California, nearly 1 in every 4 children don't speak English fluently. That's almost 1.5 million students. How to best teach them is a topic of great concern among educators, because children who are learning English struggle more in school, trailing behind classmates who speak English in every academic measure. On Election Day, California voters will decide whether to overturn a longstanding policy of teaching these children in English-only classrooms, or whether to embrace bilingual forms of teaching that show more promising outcomes for children over the long run. Education Week Correspondent Kavitha Cardoza reports on the ballot question before voters, how the research and pedagogy have evolved around teaching English-learners and the value of bilingualism. For more info, check out this article on Edweek.org: http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2016/10/12/bilingual-education-poised-for-a-comeback-in.html This video originally aired on PBS NewsHour on November 1, 2016 ____________________ Want more stories about schools across the nation, including the latest news and unique perspectives on education issues? Hormones are going crazy, you’re expected to act like an adult but you’re still a child. This means that it’s not uncommon for teens to test boundaries of both the social and physical nature. While it can be a troubling time for teens, it’s comforting to know that the phase is simply that...a phase. But because teens are immature for the most part, it means that bad decisions can be made. You know that thing called, “life experience”? Well, we get it in our teen years. It’s kind of crazy to think that most college students start their undergraduate career while still technically a teenager. That’s probably why there are often bad decisions made while in college. Of course, there are some teens that have their lives together and don’t do any shady business. But the teens you’re about to meet weren’t quite as slick. Some of these teens even managed to get themselves in the slammer from their poor choices! In this video, you’re going to learn about some secret confessions of school teens! From cheating rings to texting someone on purpose to even having crushes on your teachers, there’s a completely different world from what we see on the surface. While some of these confessions may be shocking, it’s good information to know if you’re a teenager or you’re a parent. Perhaps these confessions can even make you feel like you’re not alone as well!
