In this talk I will present two ongoing research projects: First, I will discuss a simple and scalable static analysis for resource bound and amortized complexity analysis. Our analysis is solely based on the abstract program model of lossy vector addition systems and does not require general purpose reasoners such as abstract interpreters, software model checkers or computer algebra tools. We experimentally demonstrate on a recent bound analysis benchmark that our analysis is nevertheless able to compute more loop bounds in less time than several state-of-the-art tools from the literature. Second, I will speak about feedback generation for performance problems in introductory programming assignments. Studying a large number of functionally correct student solutions we have observed only a small number of different algorithmic strategies, which, however, can be implemented in numerous different ways. I will present a light-weight programming language extension, that allows a teacher to specify these strategies, and a dynamic analysis, that allows to match the specifications of the teacher against student implementations.

The in-kernel Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) has been enhanced in recent kernels to do much more than just filtering packets. It can now run user-defined programs on events, such as on tracepoints, kprobes, uprobes, and perf_events, allowing advanced performance analysis tools to be created. These can be used in production as the BPF virtual machine is sandboxed and will reject unsafe code, and are already in use at Netflix. Beginning with the bpf() syscall in 3.18, enhancements have been added in many kernel versions since, with major features for BPF analysis landing in Linux 4.1, 4.4, 4.7, and 4.9. Specific capabilities these provide include custom in-kernel summaries of metrics, custom latency measurements, and frequency counting kernel and user stack traces on events. One interesting case involves saving stack traces on wake up events, and associating them with the blocked stack trace: so that we can see the blocking stack trace and the waker together, merged in kernel by a BPF program (that particular example is in the kernel as samples/bpf/offwaketime). This talk will discuss the new BPF capabilities for performance analysis and debugging, and demonstrate the new open source tools that have been developed to use it, many of which are in the Linux Foundation iovisor bcc (BPF Compiler Collection) project. Employee performance Reviews, Appraisals and Evaluations are vital for communication. Over the years there have been some new types of performance reviews, performance evaluation, or performance appraisals that are being met with success in today's business world. These require that employee performance evaluations, performance reviews or performance appraisals be done not only for raises, promotions, or bonuses, but for an employee's growth and development. These include: Management by Objectives Review: This method, often called MBO, measures the employee's accomplishments against a clearly established set of objectives. If managers and employees begin the year by working together to list these objectives, the end-of-year performance appraisal, performance review, or performance evaluation can simply compare each goal with its final outcome. This method is simple, clear, and empowers employees in the goal setting process but it disregards non-goal-related success metrics. Ratings Scale is probably the most common review type. Using this method, a supervisor rates an employee on a numerical scale for a defined set of behaviors, traits, competencies, or completed projects. This method gains points for simplicity and functionality, but it only works well if both managers and employees share the same understanding of each point on the scale. The 360 Degree Feedback Review is a new kind of employee performance review, performance appraisal, or performance evaluation. It incorporates data from peers, supervisors and even outside parties like customers and suppliers. This broad feedback can provide a multi-dimensional picture of performance that can cancel the influence of bias. The goal is to paint an accurate picture of employee's strengths and weaknesses. Gathering feedback from multiple sources is a great way to ensure employees are rated fairly and accurately No matter which type of employee performance evaluation, performance review or performance appraisal is used, remember the goal is to foster communication between managers and employees. Performance analysis on financial software is massively complex and challenging. This is the story of how Murex started to use Splunk to help debug performance code issues. Before Splunk we had millions and millions of timings logs, the problem was displaying them quickly so they are usable for developers and testers. Up to this point, we were using a basic PDF report with graphs with static mathematics. However, when we were able to dynamically graph this data with Splunk the analysis became much quicker and easier. The turnaround time decreased for resolution for testing and development. In addition to this we developed multiple functions in the dashboard to enhance the usability. A developer could attach their environment to Splunk in 20 seconds for live monitoring, they could save a test as a URL to share with colleagues. The Elo Rating system is a method to rate players in chess and other competitive games. A new player starts with a rating of 1000. This rating will go up if they win games, and go down if they lose games. Over time a player's rating becomes a true reflection of their ability - relative to the population. My video was mostly based on A Comprehensive Guide to Chess Ratings by Prof Mark E Glickman http://www.glicko.net/research/acjpaper.pdf Below are some of the things I wanted to talk about, but cut so the video wasn't too long! Some explanations of the Elo rating system say it is based on the normal distribution, which is not quite true. Elo's original idea did model each player's ability as a normal distribution. The difference between the two players strengths would then also be a normal distribution. However, the formula for a normal distribution is a bit messy so today it is preferred to model each player using an extreme value distribution. The difference between the two players strengths is then a logistic distribution. This has the property that if a player has a rating 400 points more than another player they are 10 times more likely to win, this makes the formula nicer to use. Practically, the difference between a logistic distribution and the normal distribution is small. For the update formula I say that your rating can increase or decrease by a maximum of 32 points, and I said there was no special reason for that. This value is called the K-factor, and the higher the K-factor the more weight you give to the players tournament performance (and so less weight to their pre-tournament performance). For high level chess tournaments they use a K-factor of 16 as it is believed their pre-tournament rating is about right, so their rating will not fluctuate as much. Some tournaments use different K-factors. In the original Elo system, draws are not included, instead they are considered to be equivalent to half a win and half a loss. The paper by Mark Glickman above contains a formula that includes draws. Similarly the paper contains a formula that includes the advantage to white. Another criticism of Elo is the reliability of the rating. The rating of an infrequent player is a less reliable measure of that player's strength, so to address this problem Mark Glickman devised Glicko and Glicko2. See descriptions of these methods at http://www.glicko.net/glicko.html On the plus side, the Elo system was leagues ahead of what it replaced, known as the Harkness system. I originally intended to explain the Harkness system as well, so here are the paragraphs I cut: "In the Harkness system an average was taken of everyone's rating, then at the end of the tournment if the percentage of games you won was 50% then your new rating was the average rating. If you did better or worse than 50% then 10 points was added or subtracted to the average rating for every percentage point above or below 50. This system was not the best and could produce some strange results. For example, it was possible for a player to lose every game and still gain points." This video was suggested by Outray Chess. The maths is a bit harder, but I liked the idea so I made a in-front-of-a-wall video.

Gas chromatography lecture - This chromatography lecture explains about the instrumentation, principle of gas chromatography. Gas chromatography (GC) is a common type of chromatography used in analytical chemistry for separating and analyzing compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition. Typical uses of GC include testing the purity of a particular substance, or separating the different components of a mixture (the relative amounts of such components can also be determined). In some situations, GC may help in identifying a compound. In preparative chromatography, GC can be used to prepare pure compounds from a mixture. This lecture will explain the principle of gas chromatography and the instrumentation and uses of gas chromatography. In gas chromatography, the mobile phase (or "moving phase") is a carrier gas, usually an inert gas such as helium or an unreactive gas such as nitrogen. Helium remains the most commonly used carrier gas in about 90% of instruments although hydrogen is preferred for improved separations.The stationary phase is a microscopic layer of liquid or polymer on an inert solid support, inside a piece of glass or metal tubing called a column (an homage to the fractionating column used in distillation). The instrument used to perform gas chromatography is called a gas chromatograph (or "aerograph", "gas separator"). Gas chromatography is in principle similar to column chromatography (as well as other forms of chromatography, such as HPLC, TLC), but has several notable differences. First, the process of separating the compounds in a mixture is carried out between a liquid stationary phase and a gas mobile phase, whereas in column chromatography the stationary phase is a solid and the mobile phase is a liquid. (Hence the full name of the procedure is "Gas–liquid chromatography", referring to the mobile and stationary phases, respectively.) Second, the column through which the gas phase passes is located in an oven where the temperature of the gas can be controlled, whereas column chromatography (typically) has no such temperature control. Finally, the concentration of a compound in the gas phase is solely a function of the vapor pressure of the gas. Gas chromatography is also similar to fractional distillation, since both processes separate the components of a mixture primarily based on boiling point (or vapor pressure) differences. Gas chromatography is also sometimes known as vapor-phase chromatography (VPC), or gas–liquid partition chromatography (GLPC). These alternative names, as well as their respective abbreviations, are frequently used in scientific literature. Strictly speaking, GLPC is the most correct terminology, and is thus preferred by many authors. In most modern GC-MS systems, computer software is used to draw and integrate peaks, and match MS spectra to library spectra. Gas Chromatography is used extensively in forensic science. What is the SMF (Systems Management Facility) system of MVS and z/OS? We see that it collects information about system and job activity and performance. Information from the SMF datasets can be extracted and reports can be easily created. We see how to do all that. SMF has variable records of many types: Here is a list of the most common SMF record types: RMF records are in the range 70 through to 79. RMF's records are generally supplemented - for serious performance analysis - by Type 30 (subtypes 2 and 3) address space records. RACF type 80 records are written to record security issues, i.e. password violations, denied resource access attempts, etc. TopSecret, another security system, also writes type 80 records. ACF2 provides equivalent information in, by default, type 230 records but this SMF record type can be changed for each installed site. SMF type 89 records indicate software product usage and are used to calculate reduced sub-capacity software pricing. DB2 writes type 100, 101 and 102 records, depending on specific DB2 subsystem options. CICS writes type 110 records, depending on specific CICS options. Websphere MQ writes type 115 and 116 records, depending on specific Websphere MQ subsystem options. WebSphere Application Server for z/OS writes type 120. Version 7 introduced a new subtype to overcome shortcomings in the earlier subtype records. The new Version 7 120 Subtype 9 record provide a unified request-based view with lower overhead. Big Orange Bramble (BOB) – A 64-node Raspberry Pi 3 based Supercomputer Abstract: This project involved the design and construction of a high performance cluster composed of 64 quad-core ARMv8 64-bit Raspberry Pi 3s. The primary intent of the project was to establish the operating environment, communication structure, application frameworks, application development tools, and libraries necessary to support the eﬀective operation of a high performance computer model for the students and faculty in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department of the University of Tennessee to utilize. As a foundation, the system borrowed heavily from the Tiny Titan system constructed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which was a similar but smaller-scale project consisting of 9 ﬁrst generation Raspberry Pis. Beyond the primary target of delivering a functional system, eﬀorts were focused on application development, performance benchmarking, and delivery of a comprehensive build/usage guide to aid those who wish to build upon the eﬀorts of this project. NMR spectroscopy lecture by Suman Bhattacharjee - This lecture explains about the NMR spectroscopy basics. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, most commonly known as NMR spectroscopy, is a research technique that exploits the magnetic properties of certain atomic nuclei. It determines the physical and chemical properties of atoms or the molecules in which they are contained. It relies on the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance and can provide detailed information about the structure, dynamics, reaction state, and chemical environment of molecules. The intramolecular magnetic field around an atom in a molecule changes the resonance frequency, thus giving access to details of the electronic structure of a molecule. Most frequently, NMR spectroscopy is used by chemists and biochemists to investigate the properties of organic molecules, although it is applicable to any kind of sample that contains nuclei possessing spin. Suitable samples range from small compounds analyzed with 1-dimensional proton or carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy to large proteins or nucleic acids using 3 or 4-dimensional techniques. The impact of NMR spectroscopy on the sciences has been substantial because of the range of information and the diversity of samples, including solutions and solids. NMR spectra are unique, well-resolved, analytically tractable and often highly predictable for small molecules. Thus, in organic chemistry practice, NMR analysis is used to confirm the identity of a substance. Different functional groups are obviously distinguishable, and identical functional groups with differing neighboring substituents still give distinguishable signals. NMR has largely replaced traditional wet chemistry tests such as color reagents for identification. A disadvantage is that a relatively large amount, 2–50 mg, of a purified substance is required, although it may be recovered. Preferably, the sample should be dissolved in a solvent, because NMR analysis of solids requires a dedicated MAS machine and may not give equally well-resolved spectra. The timescale of NMR is relatively long, and thus it is not suitable for observing fast phenomena, producing only an averaged spectrum. Although large amounts of impurities do show on an NMR spectrum, better methods exist for detecting impurities, as NMR is inherently not very sensitive. NMR spectrometers are relatively expensive; universities usually have them, but they are less common in private companies. Modern NMR spectrometers have a very strong, large and expensive liquid helium-cooled superconducting magnet, because resolution directly depends on magnetic field strength. Less expensive machines using permanent magnets and lower resolution are also available, which still give sufficient performance for certain application such as reaction monitoring and quick checking of samples. There are even benchtop NMR spectrometers. This important and well-established application of nuclear magnetic resonance will serve to illustrate some of the novel aspects of this method. To begin with, the nmr spectrometer must be tuned to a specific nucleus, in this case the proton. The actual procedure for obtaining the spectrum varies, but the simplest is referred to as the continuous wave (CW) method. A typical CW-spectrometer is shown in the following diagram. WNCG Prof. Robert Heath presents. Abstract: Cellular communication systems have proven to be a fertile ground for the application of stochastic geometry. This talk considers performance analysis in cellular systems that employ what is known as massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) communication. With massive MIMO, each base station exploits a large number of antennas and uses them to serve tens of users. Massive MIMO is being studied extensively as part of fifth generation cellular networks. This presentation applies stochastic geometry to analyze the system performance of massive MIMO networks in two different configurations: uplink (users talk to base stations) and downlink (base stations talk to users). In the uplink analysis, an exclusion ball model is proposed to incorporate the correlations between the locations of the scheduled users, and is shown to match the real user process with negligible error. Further, simple expressions for the distributions of the uplink signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and rate are derived, and reveal the scaling law that to maintain the same aggregate uplink SINR distribution in the cell, the number of antennas should scale superlinearly with the number of scheduled users per cell, as a function of the path loss exponent. For the downlink, the asymptotic SINR and rate performance is investigated, when the number of antennas goes to infinity. The analysis shows that the downlink SIR coverage increases with larger path loss exponent. The results confirm the high cell throughput of massive MIMO systems in large-scale networks.
