In this talk I will present two ongoing research projects: First, I will discuss a simple and scalable static analysis for resource bound and amortized complexity analysis. Our analysis is solely based on the abstract program model of lossy vector addition systems and does not require general purpose reasoners such as abstract interpreters, software model checkers or computer algebra tools. We experimentally demonstrate on a recent bound analysis benchmark that our analysis is nevertheless able to compute more loop bounds in less time than several state-of-the-art tools from the literature. Second, I will speak about feedback generation for performance problems in introductory programming assignments. Studying a large number of functionally correct student solutions we have observed only a small number of different algorithmic strategies, which, however, can be implemented in numerous different ways. I will present a light-weight programming language extension, that allows a teacher to specify these strategies, and a dynamic analysis, that allows to match the specifications of the teacher against student implementations.

Larry Woodman — Red Hat In this 2-hour session, we’ll explore how to configure and tune Red Hat Enterprise Linux for optimal performance while running a variety of common applications. You’ll learn how to: -Analyze the performance of heavily loaded systems. -Tune the systems to maximize performance on bare-metal x86 systems. -Tune both Linux containers and clouds virtualized with Kernel-based Virtual Machines (KVM). In the first hour, we’ll look at the Linux virtual memory system and how to tune for non-uniform memory (NUMA). We’ll share tools like "numastat," "tuned," and techniques that are used to identify and resolve performance issues in a number of combined systems and applications, such as database servers, Internet servers, financial applications, bare metal, and Linux containers. We’ll go on to discuss performance as it relates to disk and network IO. We’ll show you examples that illustrate the latest performance analysis tools and techniques like using "perf", "tuna", and "performance copilot" to identify any bottlenecks that are impacting system and application performance.

The in-kernel Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) has been enhanced in recent kernels to do much more than just filtering packets. It can now run user-defined programs on events, such as on tracepoints, kprobes, uprobes, and perf_events, allowing advanced performance analysis tools to be created. These can be used in production as the BPF virtual machine is sandboxed and will reject unsafe code, and are already in use at Netflix. Beginning with the bpf() syscall in 3.18, enhancements have been added in many kernel versions since, with major features for BPF analysis landing in Linux 4.1, 4.4, 4.7, and 4.9. Specific capabilities these provide include custom in-kernel summaries of metrics, custom latency measurements, and frequency counting kernel and user stack traces on events. One interesting case involves saving stack traces on wake up events, and associating them with the blocked stack trace: so that we can see the blocking stack trace and the waker together, merged in kernel by a BPF program (that particular example is in the kernel as samples/bpf/offwaketime). This talk will discuss the new BPF capabilities for performance analysis and debugging, and demonstrate the new open source tools that have been developed to use it, many of which are in the Linux Foundation iovisor bcc (BPF Compiler Collection) project. HPLC chromatography lecture - This lecture explains about the HPLC chromatography technique in a nutshell by Suman Bhattacharjee. HPLC is performed to separate organic and biological compounds using solid stationary phase. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is a form of column chromatography that pumps a sample mixture or analyte in a solvent which is known as the mobile phase at high pressure through a column with chromatographic packing material known as stationary phase. The sample is carried by a moving carrier gas stream of helium or nitrogen. HPLC has the ability to separate, and identify compounds that are present in any sample that can be dissolved in a liquid in trace concentrations as low as parts per trillion. Because of this versatility, HPLC is used in a variety of industrial and scientific applications, such as pharmaceutical, environmental, forensics, and chemicals. Sample retention time will vary depending on the interaction between the stationary phase, the molecules being analyzed, and the solvent, or solvents used. As the sample passes through the column it interacts between the two phases at different rate, primarily due to different polarities in the analytes. Analytes that have the least amount of interaction with the stationary phase or the most amount of interaction with the mobile phase will exit the column faster. Hplc chromatography types High-Performance Liquid Chromatography - Other HPLC Types Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography (uHPLC): Where standard HPLC typically uses column particles with sizes from 3 to 5µm and pressures of around 400 bar, uHPLC use specially designed columns with particles down to 1.7µm in size, at pressures in excess of 1000 bar. The main advantage of an uHPLC is speed. These systems are faster, more sensitive, and rely on smaller volumes of organic solvents than standard HPLC, resulting in the ability to run more samples in less time. The LTE capacity analysis in this book is presented in a comparative manner with reference to the HSPA+ network to benchmark the LTE network capacity. The book describes the voice options for LTE including VoIP protocol stack, IMS Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC). Gas chromatography lecture - This chromatography lecture explains about the instrumentation, principle of gas chromatography. Gas chromatography (GC) is a common type of chromatography used in analytical chemistry for separating and analyzing compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition. Typical uses of GC include testing the purity of a particular substance, or separating the different components of a mixture (the relative amounts of such components can also be determined). In some situations, GC may help in identifying a compound. In preparative chromatography, GC can be used to prepare pure compounds from a mixture. This lecture will explain the principle of gas chromatography and the instrumentation and uses of gas chromatography. In gas chromatography, the mobile phase (or "moving phase") is a carrier gas, usually an inert gas such as helium or an unreactive gas such as nitrogen. Helium remains the most commonly used carrier gas in about 90% of instruments although hydrogen is preferred for improved separations.The stationary phase is a microscopic layer of liquid or polymer on an inert solid support, inside a piece of glass or metal tubing called a column (an homage to the fractionating column used in distillation). The instrument used to perform gas chromatography is called a gas chromatograph (or "aerograph", "gas separator"). Gas chromatography is in principle similar to column chromatography (as well as other forms of chromatography, such as HPLC, TLC), but has several notable differences. First, the process of separating the compounds in a mixture is carried out between a liquid stationary phase and a gas mobile phase, whereas in column chromatography the stationary phase is a solid and the mobile phase is a liquid. (Hence the full name of the procedure is "Gas–liquid chromatography", referring to the mobile and stationary phases, respectively.) Second, the column through which the gas phase passes is located in an oven where the temperature of the gas can be controlled, whereas column chromatography (typically) has no such temperature control. Finally, the concentration of a compound in the gas phase is solely a function of the vapor pressure of the gas. Gas chromatography is also similar to fractional distillation, since both processes separate the components of a mixture primarily based on boiling point (or vapor pressure) differences. Gas chromatography is also sometimes known as vapor-phase chromatography (VPC), or gas–liquid partition chromatography (GLPC). These alternative names, as well as their respective abbreviations, are frequently used in scientific literature. Strictly speaking, GLPC is the most correct terminology, and is thus preferred by many authors. In most modern GC-MS systems, computer software is used to draw and integrate peaks, and match MS spectra to library spectra. Gas Chromatography is used extensively in forensic science.
