That's why it is so important to develop some coping skills for stress management The three simple stress management strategies I believe will help you the most are: 1: RELAX your central nervous system 2: Practice RESILIENCE to help you cope 3: Put your life into PERSPECTIVE Would love to read your comments below or in my blog post at the link above. The 25 COPING SKILLS Everyone MUST HAVE!

10:45
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY I think it would be cool to do a video like "25 coping skill ideas" I spent a lot of time trying to find healthy coping skills and as usual over thought it to the point I figured there was no other skills I could do I really wanted to talk about this question because I mention coping skills all the time, yet I am pretty sure I haven’t ever defined it or given you some ideas or options to help you get you started. First, let’s define coping skill: A coping skill is any characteristic or behavioral pattern that enhances a person's adaptation. Meaning that if we feel stress all the time, we can create these defense mechanisms, or coping skills to help us better manage or lessen the stress. These can be distraction techniques or tools to help us process through all that we may be feeling. Due to the 2 types of coping skills, I am going to break these into 2 sections. The first section will be all distraction techniques! So let’s jump into these techniques! Going for a walk - Getting some fresh air, moving your body and getting away from any of your unhealthy coping skills (like self injury tools, food to binge on, or alcohol to drink) can be a great distraction! Painting your nails! - This works if you struggle with purging, self injury, as well as many other issues. It makes us focus on one thing, and then we can’t do much with our hands until it dries. And by then, maybe the intense stress or urge to act out has passed. Blowing bubbles - yes I know children love this, but adults can too! It’s actually really relaxing to watch the bubbles grow and burst. I even have my patients imagine their issue is that bubble and when it pops let the bad or stressful thoughts go away too. Read a good book or listen to a wonderful audiobook. Exercise! Obviously this can only be done if it’s okay with our doctor and body. But moving and exercising regularly can lower our blood pressure, releases endorphins which can help boost our mood and reduce any pain we may be feeling. Deep breathing or breathing techniques. My breath of fire video: https://youtu.be/aT74nms0SBo Watching your favorite show or video series. Draw or doodle! Color! Duh! You knew this one was coming. I love to color, and it is just such a great distraction. There’s something about the feeling of a crayon or colored pencil on paper that is so relaxing to me. So maybe give it a try and see if it works for you! Do a crossword puzzle - or really any puzzle that you like. Writing down some positive or motivational quotes and sticking them up all over your house. Cleaning you house Playing music or even creating new playlists! And with that! Let’s move into the processing type of coping skills! Write a friend a nice card - Call or text a friend (calling is preferred) Impulse logs! Use feelings charts! Journaling - You knew this one was coming :) Sign up for my journal text club! https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ Feeling word collage - I have talked about these before too, but these are a great way to process through an emotion we may be experiencing. Write down 2-3 things you like about yourself and your situation. Talking to a therapist! Taking stock of how an emotion feels in our body Write a letter to our younger or older self. Write letters to those who are upsetting us still (but never send them) you can of course tear them up or burn them or whatever, but it can help to get out all that you have been wanting or needing to say but never got the chance. Please help transcribe and/or translate this video! http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?tab=2&c=UCzBYOHyEEzlkRdDOSobbpvw PATREON Do you want to help support the creation of mental health videos? https://www.katimorton.com/kati-morton-patreon/ JOURNALING & MOTIVATION TEXT SERVICE Let’s get started: https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ I have launched a new tool to help you journal & stay motivated. How to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed | Daniel Levitin

12:21
You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded — the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be." Chronic stress has been associated with: Poor sleep, Low testosterone levels, High blood pressure, Heart attacks, infertility and erectile dysfunction, Damaged Skin, Stubborn body fat, and lots of other terrible things you don’t want in your life. That’s why today, The Health Nerd is going to show you 17 Science Backed Ways to Relieve Stress Right Now! 1. Eat Something or chew gum. Science has shown that just chewing on something lowers stress. To avoid the calories, you can always just chew the sugar free gum. 2. Do yoga. It has been proven to lower resting cortisol levels and greatly reduce stress in its regular practitioners. Just 20 minutes of yoga will give you these effects. 3. Meditate. Just 5 minutes of concentrated deep breathing and meditation has been shown to both lower blood pressure and greatly reduce cortisol. There are plenty of free guided mediation apps for beginners that can be downloaded on your phone right now. 4. Walk away from the computer. Uninterrupted computer use has been associated with stress, lost sleep, and depression. Take frequent breaks throughout your day, and make sure to shut it off 1 hour before you fall asleep. 5. Cuddle something. Oxytocin, also called the cuddle hormone, gets released when you spend time with others or cuddle. This hormone has been shown to create a buffer against stress and will lower your heart rate and cortisol when released. 6. Listen to some stress relieving music. Research points to multiple ways in which music can help relieve stress and trigger biochemical stress reducers. There are plenty of great Youtube videos for this, and I will link my favorites in the description. 7. Watch a funny video. Laughter has also been show to reduce the physical effects of stress and lower blood pressure. So next time you’re feeling stressed or anxious, science says to watch a funny cat video! 8. Try progressive muscle relaxation. All the way from the fingers to the toes, tense and then relax each muscle group in the body. This will help relieve tension and you’ll find that once the muscles are relaxed, the mind will soon follow. 9. TURN YOUR FREAKIN PHONE OFF. Just talking on the phone has been shown to raise blood pressure. Whenever you need a break, just turn your phone on airplane mode for an hour and put it out of sight. 10. Hop off Facebook for a week. Facebook has been proven to make us feel sadder and less satisfied. Studies have also shown that when people deactivate it, they feel happier and less worried. 11. Go for a 10-minute walk. Just walking around your neighborhood for 10 minutes will boost endorphins and reduce stress hormones. If you can, walk in a park or a place with nature for greater effects. 12. Use your nose There are plenty of studies that support aromatherapy as a good way to reduce stress. Certain scents, like lavender and peppermint, have been shown to repeatedly reduce stress levels. 13. Take vitamin C. Vitamin C has been shown to stop cortisol in its tracks, and thus, lower your stress levels. If you don’t have a vitamin c pill or package around, you can always drink some lemon water for a quick boost. 14. Write your feels. Keeping a gratitude journal has been shown to make people feel happier over time. Even doing something as simple as writing out 3 new things you’re grateful for every morning in your phone will work. 15. Take a cat nap. Napping has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and aid in stress relief. A simple 20-30-minute nap is perfect for a boost of energy and a reduction in stress. 16. Have sex. Sex, well, at least after you’ve finished the deed, has been shown to reduce stress levels. 17. Buy a puppy. Studies have shown dog owners to be less stressed than others. Most likely from the ability to cuddle with something and take badass Instagram photos. How to cope with anxiety | Olivia Remes | TEDxUHasselt

15:16
Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders. If you have been dealing with stress, it is likely that you believe your stress has been caused by your external circumstances. However, in order to understand how to deal with stress and get anxiety relief, you first have to understand what is causing your stress. No stress management technique will be able to work unless you are first clear that stress isn't caused by facts, but by thoughts. If facts caused stress, then everyone who had the same facts would experience the same stress, everyone would experience that stress in every moment that their facts remained the same, and you couldn't escape your stress simply by thinking about something else. The first step for this stress management technique for how to deal with stress is to discover that your stress is created by your thoughts and not by the facts. The next step for how to deal with stress is to discover that you don't know what outcome would be best for you. You don't know if the outcome you want will lead to suffering, and you don't know if the outcome you fear will lead to joy. I hope you found this stress management technique helpful, and that you enjoyed my video about how to deal with stress (how to deal with anxiety). Thank you for watching.
