The 25 COPING SKILLS Everyone MUST HAVE! | Kati Morton

10:45
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY I think it would be cool to do a video like "25 coping skill ideas" I spent a lot of time trying to find healthy coping skills and as usual over thought it to the point I figured there was no other skills I could do I really wanted to talk about this question because I mention coping skills all the time, yet I am pretty sure I haven’t ever defined it or given you some ideas or options to help you get you started. First, let’s define coping skill: A coping skill is any characteristic or behavioral pattern that enhances a person's adaptation. Meaning that if we feel stress all the time, we can create these defense mechanisms, or coping skills to help us better manage or lessen the stress. These can be distraction techniques or tools to help us process through all that we may be feeling. Due to the 2 types of coping skills, I am going to break these into 2 sections. The first section will be all distraction techniques! So let’s jump into these techniques! Going for a walk - Getting some fresh air, moving your body and getting away from any of your unhealthy coping skills (like self injury tools, food to binge on, or alcohol to drink) can be a great distraction! Painting your nails! - This works if you struggle with purging, self injury, as well as many other issues. It makes us focus on one thing, and then we can’t do much with our hands until it dries. And by then, maybe the intense stress or urge to act out has passed. Blowing bubbles - yes I know children love this, but adults can too! It’s actually really relaxing to watch the bubbles grow and burst. I even have my patients imagine their issue is that bubble and when it pops let the bad or stressful thoughts go away too. Read a good book or listen to a wonderful audiobook. Exercise! Obviously this can only be done if it’s okay with our doctor and body. But moving and exercising regularly can lower our blood pressure, releases endorphins which can help boost our mood and reduce any pain we may be feeling. Deep breathing or breathing techniques. My breath of fire video: https://youtu.be/aT74nms0SBo Watching your favorite show or video series. Draw or doodle! Color! Duh! You knew this one was coming. I love to color, and it is just such a great distraction. There’s something about the feeling of a crayon or colored pencil on paper that is so relaxing to me. So maybe give it a try and see if it works for you! Do a crossword puzzle - or really any puzzle that you like. Writing down some positive or motivational quotes and sticking them up all over your house. Cleaning you house Playing music or even creating new playlists! And with that! Let’s move into the processing type of coping skills! Write a friend a nice card - Call or text a friend (calling is preferred) Impulse logs! Use feelings charts! Journaling - You knew this one was coming :) Sign up for my journal text club! https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ Feeling word collage - I have talked about these before too, but these are a great way to process through an emotion we may be experiencing. Write down 2-3 things you like about yourself and your situation. Talking to a therapist! Taking stock of how an emotion feels in our body Write a letter to our younger or older self. Write letters to those who are upsetting us still (but never send them) you can of course tear them up or burn them or whatever, but it can help to get out all that you have been wanting or needing to say but never got the chance. Please help transcribe and/or translate this video! http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?tab=2&c=UCzBYOHyEEzlkRdDOSobbpvw PATREON Do you want to help support the creation of mental health videos? https://www.katimorton.com/kati-morton-patreon/ JOURNALING & MOTIVATION TEXT SERVICE Let’s get started: https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ I have launched a new tool to help you journal & stay motivated. 04:18
Feeling stressed out? Anxious? Overwhelmed? Dealing with stress is a skill we need to learn to live an anxiety-free life. Different types of stress, eustress and distress explored! Eustress or positive stress, is perceived as motivating. It improves your performance and feels exciting. It’s a short term mobilizing force helping you take action. Important thing to note here, within the scope of the positive stress you feel like whatever you are challenged with is within your capabilities. Distress or the negative stress on the other hand, feels draining and unpleasant. It’s the feeling of being overwhelmed and you begin to perceive tasks as being outside your coping abilities. This type of stress decreases performance and may lead to mental and health problems. What are the effects of psychological distress? First of all, it suppresses your immune system. Stress has also been found to be connected with depression and there’s more research emerging, which links stress to respiratory tract infections, asthma autoimmune dis- eases and problems with wound healing. How to cope with anxiety | Olivia Remes | TEDxUHasselt

15:16
Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders. But, in any moment that you don't think about any of these things, you will experience no stress at work. 3 Ways to Deal With Stress | In the Cards

03:25
3 Big Ways to Cope with Stress: 1. Reduce your stressors (if you can). 2. Increase your coping. 3. Change your thinking. People are feeling more stressed out than ever. The majority of people say they are stressed by things like money, work, the current political climate, violence and crime, and worries about the future of the country. So how can we deal with all this stress? There are three big ways to cope with stress. Let's think about stress like weight... ...but instead of physical weight, it's emotional weight. So if you are trying to lift too much physical weight, you have three options. First, you can reduce the amount of weight. Second, you can build more muscle. Or third you could improve your mental game. We know from sports 90% is how you think about it. The same is true of emotional weight. When you are stressed, you have three options. First, you might be able to reduce your stressors. To do this, list all your stressors and put checks by the ones you can take care of later or just get rid of altogether. But the truth is sometimes you can't reduce your stressors--or at least not enough to really make a difference. That means you have to rely on the other two options. The second option is to increase your coping. This is kind of like building muscle. The way you build emotional muscle is by using good coping strategies. Coping strategies are things you do--or could do--that help you reduce your stress. It could be talking to friends, walking your dog, journaling, cooking, building something, listening to music, meditating, or anything else that works for you. You can always use this option, so it's a good idea to write down a list of 5 to 7 strategies that can work for you. When you feel stressed, pull out the list and do one of the activities on your list. The third option for dealing with stress is to change your thinking. Most stress is about the meaning of the stress. Take an example. Let's say two people have to give a presentation in front of a group of 20 people. The first person is sweating bullets and rates his stress as an 8 on a 10 scale. The second person is cool and calm and rates her stress as a 2 on a 10 scale. What's the difference? Well, the first person is probably having thoughts like, "What if I embarrass myself in front of everyone?" "What is I stumble over my words?" "I worry people will see me sweating." Things like that. But the second person is probably having thoughts like, "It's only a five minute presentation." "If someone judges me for my presentation, then I probably don't want them in my life." "I'm going to be fine no matter how this goes." It's the same stressor, but it affects one more than the other because of how he's thinking about it. Changing your thinking might not eliminate your stress, but it can reduce a lot of the weight of it. So those are the 3 big ways you can cope with stress: 1. Reduce your stressors (if you can). 2. Increase your coping. 3. Change your thinking. None of these will make all your stress disappear, but they can help you cope a lot better. You don't want your life to be completely stress free. Just like lifting physical weight builds strength and muscle, the same is true of emotional weight. When you deal with stress, you build emotional muscle and that makes you more resilient. But using these ways of coping can let you manage your stress in healthy ways. Thanks for watching.
