Do you like or enjoy my videos? Then consider buying me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/uQKkXCF6B Small Talk - How to Start a Conversation - Tips and Tricks (animated) Do you know someone who can strike up a conversation with everybody they meet? Their conversations look effortless, they often get free drinks at the bar, and they make best friends any time they go out. How do these people do it? Are they some type of social mutants? Or are they just “naturals” when it comes to talking to people? They may be gifted, but they don’t have some coveted secret. Instead, they’ve just mastered the art of small talk. Small talk is the base of a conversation. Never forget conversation is a ladder and you can't just leap-frog up the conversation. You need small talk to climb the ladder and warm people up with it. A few examples how to transform closed-ended questions to open-ended: Would you like vanilla ice cream? What is your favorite flavor of ice cream and why? When is your birthday? When is your birthday and how do you like to celebrate? Where did you go to college? What do you feel was most beneficial about your college experience?

7 Greatest Conversation Starters That Actually Work

06:26
Being a great conversationalist can be challenging. I have struggled with it myself prior to meeting Dorian, and the absolute hardest part and often overlooked is the way to get INTO a conversation in the first place. So I asked Dorian (the best conversationalist I've ever met) to join me to do a video about the 7 greatest conversation starters that actually work - which have been battle-tested by myself and Dorian for years now. What drives me nuts about the other advice I see in articles and videos is that you'd never walk up to someone out of the blue and ask some stupid question like: "What's happening?" - you already know exactly what's happening 'cus you're at the same f#$ckin place! I can't stand to see advice like this because I have struggled with how to start conversations myself and those type of small talk tips and tricks are the furthest from helpful. http://awest.me/7starters for a companion article to this video. http://AshleyWeston.com for more about me, what I do as a Celebrity Menswear Stylist, and other men's lifestyle related articles and videos. __________________________________ FREE MEN'S STYLE EBOOKS To download my free ebooks click here → http://awest.me/ebooks __________________________________ SOCIAL MEDIA ● Instagram → http://instagram.com/ashleypweston ● Snapchat → https://www.snapchat.com/add/ashleypweston ● Twitter → http://twitter.com/ashleypweston ● Facebook → http://facebook.com/ashleywestonstylist ● Pinterest → https://www.pinterest.com/ashleypweston __________________________________ HAVE QUESTIONS? Business meeting & conference SMALL TALK – How to avoid that awkward moment!

11:42
Do you get nervous in social situations? In this lesson, I'll teach you expressions you can use to master small talk and have meaningful conversations while presenting a professional image. While you can use these expressions in many business and academic situations, this lesson is focused on starting conversations when you are at a conference. I share many good small talk topics that are appropriate in this context. You will learn how to talk about what you have learned at the conference and how to express your opinion about the experience, including the conference venue and speakers. This is a great lesson to watch to prepare yourself for attending a work- or school-related conference. My goal in this lesson is to help you feel confident and make the right impressions with the people you meet. For more practice, take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/business-meeting-conference-small-talk/ . Good luck! TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is conference talk. So, we've got "Conference Small Talk", and also more generally about talking about the thing that you're there for. The reason I made this lesson is because, hopefully, I want you to learn how to avoid that awkward moment when you're like standing outside a conference room or somewhere, or maybe it's a break, you could be by yourself, and you're just standing there, like: "What am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to say something? Am I supposed to talk to someone?" And maybe you start to pretend that you're busy, get your phone out or something. So, anyway, this will save you in your awkward moment situation. So, the small talk part, that's where I'm imagining you're... You're waiting for something to happen. You're waiting for the next talk, or there's a break, or there's some kind of interlude where you're not doing something. Here are some conversational starters that you could... That you could have. You could say to someone: "Are you presenting a paper here?" That would be like an academic kind of conference. Or you could say: "Are you a speaker here?" If they look like they are. Or you could be more general. You could say: "Is this your first time in __________?" Blah, blah, blah place? A lot of the time these kind of conference events, people come... Come there from all... You know, all different places, so it could be any place, really. Couldn't it? But let's say it's in Amsterdam. "Is this your first time in Amsterdam?" And then you can generally talk about Amsterdam, and how lovely it is, and how nice it is to ride bicycles all the time. Perhaps you kind of know each other; you've met before. In which case, you can ask them how they're getting on with their work. So: "getting on"-I'm going to use a pen again-means progressing... Is the formal verb for "get on". "How are you getting on with your research?" Or: "How are you getting on with your project?" Or: "How are you getting on at work?" You've met before, but this could get your... Your... This could help you catch up with each other. What if you want to...? Want to be friends and you want to make friends at the conference? What can you say? You can say: "So, are you attending the welcome drinks tonight?" Because you want them to say: "Sure I am. Let's go together." You want them to say something like that, maybe. Or if you're not sure yet if you want to hang out later, you could say: "Where are you based?" So, the place where you're based means the place where you... Where you work. So, I'm based in Dubai at the moment. So, you know, this one I'm thinking it's more like if you're all part of the same bigger company, but you have different offices in different places. Perhaps you just want to know where they're based. Moving on from general small talk, because not everybody likes to do small talk, we've got some talk about the talk, now. So: "What did you think of the last talk?" And I've got some suggestions for you to sound very clever and informed, like this guy. So you could say: "Yes, I thought it... It raised some interesting questions." What that means is it was a kind of talk that made you think and consider new things, and you know, got some... Got some ideas, and some brain connections flowing, there. Or perhaps you could say: "Well, it provoked a fierce debate." A fierce debate would be when people are very much disagreeing with each other about what was said, and there's not much agreement about it. Whereas: "It generated a lively discussion", doesn't have the opposition or against each other feeling of a fierce debate. A lively discussion is like in... On the enjoyable side of things, talking about things, and, you know, sharing different opinions, but not so much in confrontation. Or you might say, as you're a clever person: "It challenged the status quo." The status quo is the established way of doing things. So, this paper may have been so, so evolutionary that it challenges the status quo.

Small talk is a key to great communication and these small talk tips will help you with breaking the ice. Small talk takes practice and the more you practice the better you will get. These 4 conversation starters will help you feel comfortable the next time you decide to engage in a little small talk. Aaron Marino of alpha m. says that small talk is the key to managing the act of conversing with new people and a critical component of interaction. We need small talk. It's like boxing- you start by feeling him / her out. It's a dance, not knocking someone out. Small talk is peppering them with punches. Four Favorite Conversation Starters 1. "When you're not working, what do you like doing?" - hobbies (passion) are something that people can talk about all day long and they get excited doing it. Conversation will get rolling, and eventually they reciprocate the question. 2. "How's your day going?" - hopefully they elaborate more than 'fine'. If not, go to #3. 3. "You have any plans this weekend?" - if they haven't engaged at this point, this person 'sucks' and find someone else. 4. Lead with a compliment; however, the only appropriate aspect to compliment is something that they're wearing otherwise it could be taken the wrong way!

Have better conversations using the FORD method

18:02
Don't know what to talk about with someone? Do you hate uncomfortable silence? Want to become a better conversationalist? In this video, I will teach you the FORD method of conversation. "FORD" stands for Family, Occupation, Recreation, and Dreams. These are perfect topics for conversing with anyone, including people you don't know very well. I will give you many examples of FORD questions to ask. You can use these questions to keep a conversation going and connect with people. FORD is a great tool for anyone who wants to improve their small talk skills and become more likeable. https://www.engvid.com/ford-method-small-talk/ TRANSCRIPT ello. My name is Emma, and in today's video I am going to teach you how to be better at conversation and speaking. Okay? So, in this video I'm going to teach you about how to become better at conversation with a technique. We call the technique "F-O-R-D" or "FORD". This technique will really help you if you're shy, if when you meet people for the first time you don't know what to say, if you feel very uncomfortable at parties or in meetings or any social events. This is a great technique. Even if you're amazing at socializing, this video can still really help you even improve more than what you already can do. So let's get started. Okay, so the first thing I want to talk about is we use FORD as a way of small talk. So, what is small talk? Okay? Small talk is the type of conversation we have with people we don't know well or strangers. So, you might make small talk with your neighbours, you might make small talk with your boss, with your colleagues, maybe if you're, you know, going to a coffee shop you might make small talk with the store clerk. So, you make small talk with people you don't know well and it's just a way to make people feel comfortable in conversation and to create a connection with people. A lot of conversation is small talk. If anyone has ever talked to you about the weather, sports, you know, all sorts of different topics - these are usually small talk topics. So, again, you might make small talk at parties, in elevators, at meetings, even if you're taking English classes you will probably make small talk there as well. So, how do we get good at small talk? What do we talk about when we don't know what to talk about? Well, that's where FORD comes in. FORD is a technique which will help you know what to talk about when you really have no idea. So maybe this has been you before. Okay? Maybe this is you: "What should I talk about? Ah." Or, you know, maybe it's just a bunch of question marks. "I don't know what to say." It's totally silent. It's awkward. So, how can we fix this situation? Well, FORD stands for four things. "F" stands for "family". You can talk about family, and I'm going to give you some great questions you can use to ask about somebody's family. "O" stands for "occupation" or job. I'm going to give you some great questions about occupation that you can ask somebody you don't know well to keep the conversation going. "R" stands for "recreation", this is like hobbies, sports, movies, Netflix, TV. Okay? So I'm going to give you some great questions for hobbies or recreation. And finally, "D" stands for "dreams". This is when you ask somebody about their future goals or, you know, something they want to do. This does not... Dreams does not mean when you go to sleep, if you have some weird dream and you share it with somebody. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about your dreams in life. What are your goals? Okay? So using the FORD technique will make you better at small talk. So, now let's look at some specific questions you can ask when you're socializing with somebody who you don't know that well. Okay, so again, the "F" in FORD stands for "family". Family is a great thing to talk about, but remember to keep it light and easy. Okay? You want to talk about things people are comfortable with. So don't ask them any private questions, you know, like: "Oh, is it true so-and-so cheated on so-and-so?" No, no, no. Keep it light, simple, and easy. And also share about your own family, too. Okay? That's also very important. You don't want to sound like the FBI interrogating somebody. You want to have a conversation, so each time they say something, you can say something about yourself. So keep it kind of balanced. Okay, so one easy question you can talk about: "Where are you from originally?" Okay? "Where are you from? Are you from Toronto? Are you from Tokyo? Are you from Istanbul? Where are you from?" This question is great because you can really talk about the difference between your cities and, you know, maybe some of your experiences growing up. Similarly: "Where did you grow up?" A lot of people have moved a lot, so maybe they were born in this city, then they moved to Mexico, and then they moved here. So that's also another interesting question.

How to make a good small talk in English ? English Lesson

09:57
How to make a good small talk? English Lesson Take the test : http://www.learnex.in/how-to-make-a-small-talk-english-lesson-esl In most English-speaking countries, it is normal and necessary to make "small talk" in certain situations. Small talk is a casual form of conversation that "breaks the ice" or fills an awkward silence between people. Even though you may feel shy using your second language, it is sometimes considered rude to say nothing. Just as there are certain times when small talk is appropriate, there are also certain topics that people often discuss during these moments. Watch the lesson for better understanding of small talk. The hardest part about making small talk is knowing how to start a conversation. Review the conversation starters in the video and practise them with a friend. Finally, take the time to see how much you have learned about small talk by taking the test at the end of the video. And remember, in an English-speaking environment it is often better to make a few mistakes than to say nothing at all!
