Preventing ion exchanger breakthrough is one way to protect against turbine and boiler corrosion. Using traditional methods of measuring sodium, silica and conductivity to monitor water purity are all viable options, but they all have a common disadvantage. They detect resin exhaustion only after breakthrough. This means that contaminants have already reached your process water as it is being detected by your analyzer or sensor, which is too late. The two typical methods for estimating breakthrough before it occurs are based on elapsed time (i.e. how much time has passed since the last regeneration) or totalized flow (i.e. how much water has passed through the ion exchanger). Both of these methods require the assumption that flow volumes and/or amount of deionization resin required are constant. This is not typically the case, resulting in one of two outcomes: Early resin regeneration, which wastes both time and money by not fully utilizing the deionization resin capacity. Unexpected resin exhaustion, which results in contamination of your water cycle chemistry, resulting in potential equipment damage. Their crystallization is often a nucleation-controlled process from a gel and the structure that crystallizes depends on the cations present. "A multitude of commercial processes have been developed that exploit size exclusion and selective molecular diffusivity properties based upon the nanosize pore and channel structure of zeolites... The demand for two C8 isomers, paraxylene and orthoxylene, is much greater than that for the C8 isomers metaxylene and ethylbenzene. H-ZSM5 with its 0.6 nm pore size has the ability to isomerize xylenes with little cracking of the feedstock. A second crucial property is that paraxylene has a much higher diffusivity in H-ZSM5 than do the other xylene isomers. This means that the paraxylene molecules can more easily diffuse out of the zeolite crystal, whereas the ortho and metaxylene isomers are effectively trapped within the pores." -Vision for Nanotechnology R&D in the Next Decade, National Science and Technology Council IWGN Workshop Report, Section 9.7.4 Nanoscale Catalysts (1999). ZSM-5, Zeolite Socony Mobil #5, is a catalyst first made by Argauer and Landolt in 1972 (U. S. Patent 3,702,886). It is a medium pore zeolite with channels defined by ten-membered rings. The synthesis involves three different solutions. The first solution is the source of alumina, sodium ions, and hydroxide ions; in the presence of excess base the alumina will form soluble Al(OH)4- ions. The second solution has the tetrapropylammonium cation that acts as a templating agent. The third solution is the source of silica, one of the basic building blocks for the framework structure of a zeolite. Mixing the three solutions produces supersaturated tetrapropylammonium ZSM-5, which can be heated to recrystallize and produce a solid. In subsequent steps the organic templating agent is removed and the zeolite converted to its acid form.

Two solutions are prepared where a few drops of 0.2 M calcium nitrate is added to distilled water. In the second solution, a zeolite is added that will exchange Na+ ions for Ca2+ ions reducing the water hardness. Upon addition of carbonate ions, the precipitate formed in the solution with zeolites is noticeably less and eventually clears up completely. Hard water occurs when magnesium or calcium is dissolved in water and can form deposits with carbonate or with soap. Reducing the amount of calcium or magnesium ions is the goal for water softening.

MAXIMUM LIMITS FOR BOILER WATER BLOW DOWN:- Boiler water ‘blow down’ is the removal of same of the concentrated water to be replaced by feed water. In this way the concentration of TDS, ALKALINITY, SILICA etc can be directly lowered to permissible limits. Continuous blow down for which boiler have arrangement is the most effective calculations for adjusting. Best way of reducing % blow down is reducing TDS, ALKALINITY, SILICA etc in feed water itself by way of external treatment (i.e. DM Plant, etc) followed by internal treatment (chemical treatment).

Silica has no significant corrosive effect on boilers, but its presence in water / steam is nonetheless very detrimental. It forms extremely hard coatings in steam passage ways and on turbine blades, leading to changes in steam velocities and pressure drops affecting turbine efficiency. If left unchecked, increased silica build-up can result in unbalanced rotors and cause damage through vibration at high speeds. Direct, continuous silica measurement is the most effective means to protect against contamination from spent anion resin and steam carryover. Silica is always present in cooling water so ppb level silica measurement provides excellent sensitivity in detecting small condenser leaks and for identifying exhaustion of condensate polishers. Silica has negligible conductivity and therefore cannot be detected using conductivity measurement. Ultrapure water monitoring at ppb silica levels can ensure the highest quality water is being delivered. Silica breakthrough of polisher anion resin must be detected at very low ppb levels so that contaminated water can be diverted before it reaches critical areas. Pure water treatment anion exchange monitoring detects the first breakthrough of silica to trigger regeneration before contamination reaches subsequent treatment stages. Condensate polisher monitoring can detect the need for regeneration at low ppb levels before feedwater is significantly contaminated. Silica measurement and control may also be needed to meet turbine manufacturer warranty requirements. In the steam boiler industry, high purity feed water is required to ensure proper operation of steam generation systems. High purity feed water reduces the use of boiler chemicals due to less frequent blowdown requirements (reducing blowdown frequency by as much as a factor of 10). Lower blowdown frequency also results in lower fuel costs. Scale buildup is reduced due to a smaller concentration of impurities in the boiler feed water to foul heat transfer surfaces. The lower level of impurities also reduces corrosion rates in the boiler. When a boiler is used to run a steam turbine, turbine blade erosion is reduced due to higher purity steam generated. Use of reverse osmosis (RO) in feed water purification systems reduces chemical costs by reducing the frequency of ion exchange regeneration. Silicate and colloidal deposits decrease boiler efficiency and also result in premature failure of turbines. Ultrafiltration can remove greater than 99% of colloidal silica, as well as precipitated iron and aluminum. A boiler feed water treatment system might be made up of the technologies necessary to remove problematic dissolved solids, suspended solids, and organic material, including any number of the following: 1. Iron: either soluble or insoluble, iron can deposit on boiler parts and tubes, damage downstream equipment, and affect the quality of certain manufacturing processes. 2. Copper: can cause deposits to settle in high-pressure turbines, decreasing their efficiency and requiring costly cleaning or equipment change-outs 3. Silica: if not removed to low levels, especially in high-pressure boilers, silica can cause extremely hard scaling 4. Calcium: can cause scaling in several forms depending on the chemistry of the boiler feed water (e.g. calcium silicate, calcium phosphate, etc.) 5. Magnesium: if combined with phosphate, magnesium can stick to the interior of the boiler and coat tubes, attracting more solids and contributing to scale 6. Aluminum: deposits as scale on the boiler interior and can react with silica to increase the likelihood of scaling 7. Hardness: also causes deposits and scale on boiler parts and piping 8. Notable examples of prospective applications are catalysis, sorption, gas sensing, ion exchange, optics, and photovoltaics. Mesopores may be defined differently in other contexts. For example, in the context of porous aggregations such as soil, mesopores are defined as cavities with sizes in the range 30 µm–75 µm.

This is also known as molecular exclusion chromatography or gel filtration chromatography. In this chromatography process molecules are separated based on their size. Mixture of molecules are passed through a polymer network made with agarose gel.
