Sustainable UAE - Documentary on living a sustainable life in the desert.

21:58
In recent years, the UAE has heavily invested in renewable energy. Prestigious projects such as Masdar and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park are leading examples in the world today. By 2030, clean energy needs to make up at least 30% of our total energy consumption, which will create approximately 100,000 new jobs in the energy sector. But the UAE looks past its own borders, too. The government has set aside at least 340 million USD for sustainability projects in developing countries around the world.

Homesteading Family Living Off-Grid in a Spectacular Earthship

14:35
This inspiring off-grid homesteading family lives in a renovated stone earthship. They grow their own food, collect rainwater, use solar power, have composting toilets, and they have a pond that filters their grey water. On top of living an eco friendly lifestyle, they dedicate their work to important projects like urban gardening and promoting industrial hemp as "Hempbassadors." To follow their exciting project, check them out on Facebook and Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/hempbassadors/ https://www.facebook.com/hempbassadors/ Off-Grid Living playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLslKBpzJILet38X4jewEbINeMM9MJCMXe Earthship playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLslKBpzJILeszhgpmnHfNQwoRgAcXYBXr During the winter, they typically take 2-4 months off to travel, which is financially possible for them because they don't have a mortgage (the house only cost $15,000 when they bought it). Their daughter, Emma, is in the first grade, but they take her out of school while they travel and homeschool her on the road. Francis & Marie have dreamt of being self-sufficient for a long time. For 8 years they renovated their earthship home, planted their permaculture gardens, and prepared for the day they'd be able to live their dream full-time. For over 2 years now they've been living on their dream homestead. They grow apples, berries, and other fruits which they preserve for winter. They also grow vegetables, and collect eggs from their chickens. In the summer, their grocery bill can be as low as $30/week because they produce so much of their own food. Much of their harvest is kept cool in their root cellar although they would like to have a fridge. The home is a passive solar home with a greenhouse in the front. It can stay above zero degrees on it's own, but they have a wood stove – an Amish Pioneer Princess – to heat the house, to cook, and to heat their hot water. For rainwater, they have 3 collection systems. One is a tank in front of the house that collects water from the greenhouse, and they use a solar powered pump to transfer it into an underground cistern. Another tank collects rainwater from the roof, and a third collects rainwater from their shed. In total they can have 10,000 litres of fresh water when all of the tanks are full. They don't have a well yet so they get their drinking water from a cabin they have access to down the road. They have a small solar power system for their lights, the water pump, and for the internet. They'd eventually like to invest in a bigger system but for now it works well. Thanks for watching! Green Investment and EU sustainability policies

01:39:12
The event was organised by the local DiEM25 Spontaneous Collective of The Hague, The Netherlands. It took place on May the 17th 2017 at The Youth Factory in The Hague The discussion had the aim of driving awareness on the topics investment and policy to make Europe sustainable. Climate change is without a doubt the biggest existential threat that we are facing, and our generation has to rise up to the task of tackling it in the most complex and problematic of contexts. The world is still struggling with the social and macro-economic effects of the global crisis triggered by the implosion of the finance bubble in 2008 and Europe is afflicted by scarce investment, a slow recovery from the economic crisis and an ever more apparent democratic crisis. How is the European Union going to achieve sustainability? What are the strategic areas of investment and the policies that we should be pursuing? How will we make the transition to sustainability painless, both socially and economically? In order to answer these questions, we discussed this challenging topic with the following three experts from complementary backgrounds: Dr. Rene Kleijn Associate Professor and Director of education of Industrial Ecology at Leiden University, Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) Expert in industrial ecology, circular economy, environmental impact assessment, critical materials and supply chains. Dr. David Zetland Assistant Professor of Economics at Leiden University College Expert in environmental and resource economics, political economy, common pool resources, entrepreneurship and development. Paper or Plastic: Which Bags Hurt the Environment More?

Paper vs. plastic bags: You'd think this fight would have been settled by now. But as Trace explains, for cities around the world, the fight is more complicated than you'd think. Bill Gates Is Backing The Waterless Toilet Of The Future

01:58
In developing countries, access to public utilities like running water and sewer systems are often not available. The lack of those resources leads to unsanitary conditions that can put people's lives at risk. Researchers at Cranfield University hope to put an end to that with the waterless Nano Membrane Toilet. The design has so much potential to change lives that it's been backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Regreening the planet - VPRO documentary - 2014

48:12
Regreening the planet looks at the profit that comes from the recovery of ecosystems in Spain, Egypt and India. Restoring ecosystems does not only generate ecological profit but also economic. In Regreening the desert, the makers of VPRO Backlight showed that the greening of deserts is very well possible. They followed the American-Chinese cameraman and ecologist John D. Liu. He filmed how an inhospitable dry mountain area as large as the Netherlands was transformed into a lush green oasis. The greening caused not only ecological recovery but also economic growth of the region. Since then, John D. Liu has traveled the world to inspire people in other countries to follow this example. Dutch ecologist Willem Ferwerda was inspired by Liu and decided to work together with him. This cooperation has grown into a new organization, Commonland, a foundation with a clear mission: to restore the ecosystems on a large scale worldwide. The point of departure is that restoring landscapes not only yields ecological profits but also money, work and hope for the people living there. We can see that this works in Egypt: in 1977 Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish SEKEM, experimented to green the desert at Cairo. In 2014, SEKEM has grown to be the leading supplier of ecological products in Egypt and far beyond. Dr. Abouleish has built not only a flourishing business in the desert but a complete community with schools and their own medical and cultural facilities. A better proof that greening and social innovation go hand in hand is almost impossible to find. That all areas can grow alive, even if they are completely eroded by erosion, also appears from the special story of Indian Jadav "Molai" Payeng. When he was 17, he worked for a replanting project in Assam province. After the project was completed and the other laborers had disappeared, he decided to continue propagating wood by hand. Now, Molai forest is 300 acres and populated by elephants, Bengal tigers, deer, rhino and numerous birds. Payeng is also called The Forest Man in India because he has been able to create a jungle singlehandedly. That is something that Spain might well use. Large areas in Spain are dry and abandoned due to misused agricultural subsidies, unintentional water and land use and large-scale erosion. The population is turning its back on the countryside and moves to the cities, but there is also unemployment there. In Ayoo de Vidriales, a graying village in the middle of Spain, agricultural engineer Pedro Alonso Fernandez has begun to recover land. He wants to show that the Spanish silted and eroded soils are in fact Green Gold. The Story of Bottled Water

08:05
The Story of Bottled Water, released on March 22, 2010 (World Water Day) employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the story of manufactured demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. Over five minutes, the film explores the bottled water industrys attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste it produces. The film concludes with a call to take back the tap, not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting investments in clean, available tap water for all. Our production partners on the bottled water film include five leading sustainability groups: Corporate Accountability International, Environmental Working Group, Food & Water Watch, Pacific Institute, and Polaris Institute. Make In India - Explained - In Hindi

29:40
What is Make in India I am going to explain you in Hindi Make in India was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014. India emerged, after initiation of the programme in 2015, as the top destination globally for foreign direct investment (FDI), surpassing the United States of America as well as the People's Republic of China. In 2015, India received US$63 billion in FDI. This program is mainly for the companies who would like to invest in india and make the products in india itself. "Zero Defect Zero Effect" is a slogan coined by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi which signifies production mechanisms wherein products have no defects and the process through which product is made has zero adverse environmental and ecological effects. Narendra Modi government has taken too many steps in various categories where the investors can invest and start the manufacturing service in India. There are various sectors in which a company can invest from Automobile to wellness. Even as government has allowed FDI in many sectors 100% and in many sectors 49% for some sectors government approval is required. This not only sets the base for developed india but also provides a helping hand for companies. Faba Invest ICO Review - Invest in the Future

06:02
Everybody’s heard that old fairy tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, right? So do you remember those magic beans he planted before he discovered a huge green pillar standing tall in his parents’ front yard? Our today’s project claims it has discovered a similar kind of beans. You can’t plant them, though, but you sure can make some money off of them. So this review is about the project called Faba Invest. We’re going to go over what this thing is all about, their upcoming ICO and tokens. We’ll also take a look at the people making it all work and give you our take on the entire concept behind Faba. 0:59 What is Faba about? FABA is a venture capital company that intends to extend its operations by giving you a chance to invest in projects involved in particular sectors of economy. They’re developing a crypto token that bridges startup community with the traditional venture capital market. Faba financially supports companies with positive impact on our environment, such as those directed at the improvement of ecology, medicine and education. 1:21 What market is FABA about to enter? Faba is the first venture capital token with positive impact on our lives. They connect traditional venture capital market economy with the crypto world bringing new opportunities to both. FABA LTD invests in those projects that have passed through professional due diligence process, where it becomes an equity shareholder. The main goal of Faba is to become the largest venture capital company that supports game-changing projects with the positive impact on our environment. 2:02 All about Faba token Faba is an ERC20 token. And based on its description in the Whitepaper, it is a security token, so you should be very careful before buying them, as there might be special tax regulations for security tokens holders. You simply acquire Faba tokens with the right for dividends. Additionally, these tokens grant you some voting rights. Each holder of minimum 2000 tokens has a voting right and can have their own input on short listed projects. There are 80 million FABAS for sale, which is exactly half of the total supply. The price to pay for one token starts with $1. However, your minimum investment must equal or exceed $200. 2:46 What about Faba MVP? Let’s be honest here – Faba doesn’t have an MVP yet, just the idea. Besides, their Roadmap only reveals details regarding the token sale and very little detail on the actual innovation and platform development. What is known from the Whitepaper is that Faba is preparing an interface where it is possible to submit new project proposals and votes. Both FABA LTD and (FABA) tokens holders will be able to submit projects for voting. Once a project gets a majority of positive votes out of total FABA voters, it is considered as pre-approved for funding. 3:15 Who is on the Faba team? Robert Flocius is the CEO of Faba Invest. He’s a Financial Executive with broad experience in all aspects of equity investments. Former shareholder and Co-founder of UB Networks Benelux NV – a US based data communications company and the first world partner of Cisco Systems Inc. later sold to Newbridge for $260 million. He served as senior Adviser to Madge Networks (the fastest growing UK company in 1996). His speciality covers M&A, Equity, IPO's, Structured Finance and Consulting. He joined the company around last June and is still a board member of another company, so one might have doubts as to whether he’s devoted to this project. Alex Nakonechny is the CTO. He focuses primarily on the field of crisis management and business models which is essential in the implementation of business projects in different stages and sizes. Julia Zajacova is the CFO on the team. She graduated from University of Economics in Bratislava with specialization on production management and logistics. She has 12 years of experience in supply chain management working for large companies, specifically on planning and forecasting positions. __ Token: Faba (FABA) Token type: ERC20 Token supply: 160,000,000 Platform: Etherium Category: Platform ICO start: June 6 2018 ICO goal: $4000000 Presale: complete: June 5 2018 Registered Country: UK

Additional vital ingredients such as palm, cocoa and other crops are also produced in the wider region where the project is located so that Arbonne supports an initiative that protects the sustainability of ingredients that are aligned with key ingredients we formulate with. This program has social sustainability benefits for regional inhabitants via education about the risk of deforestation and the positive impact of sustainably harvesting ingredients. It also provides legitimate sources of work to forest-dependent communities and their families. :: ARBONNE | Zero Waste Company :: Arbonne has made annual progress in increasing the amount of waste recycled and diverted from landfills. What You Don't Know About Money but Should

19:28
http://www.positivemoney.org/ Ben Dyson, Founder of Positive Money, talking on the BBC Radio 4 'Four Thought' program about the fundamental flaws in our banking system. He tells how his disillusionment with mainstream economics led him to campaign for a proper understanding of how money works as the first step in fixing a failed banking system. You may find this hard to believe, but money happens to be the one part of the real world that economics ignores more than anything else. I know how absurd that sounds. How can economists ignore money? Isn't the whole subject about money? Well, economists concern themselves with how people spend their money, how businesses make their money, and how traders in financial markets make their millions. But there are some very basic questions that are almost completely ignored. One of these key questions is simply, where does money come from? Who actually creates it? You can order the books mentioned in the talk here: Where does money come from? http://www.positivemoney.org/where-does-money-come-from/ Modernising Money http://www.positivemoney.org/modernising-money/ -------------------------- SUBSCRIBE to Positive Money UK's videos: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=PositiveMoneyUK Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/PositiveMoney Follow us on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/PositiveMoneyUK Follow us on Google+ http://www.positivemoney.org.uk/googleplus Positive Money is a not-for-profit research and campaign group. In particular they focus on the role of banks in creating the nation's money supply through the accounting process they use when they make loans - an aspect of banking which is poorly understood. And everywhere we are urged to eat organic: it's more nutritious, pesticide-free, and protects animals and the environment. At least, that's what we are being told – or rather, sold. And thanks to a lot of very effective marketing, many people believe it. That's why, when researchers at Cornell University gave study participants a choice between two identical items, one labeled "organic" and one "regular," the participants confidently declared the "organic" choice to be lower in calories and more nutritious. They also said they'd pay 16 to 23 percent more for the organic choice. But these beliefs about organic food have nothing to do with reality. In 2012, Stanford University's Center for Health Policy did the most comprehensive comparison and found organic foods are not nutritionally superior to conventional alternatives. And a more recent review of 20 years of research into animal products by Italian researchers confirmed these findings. The authors concluded: "Scientific studies do not show that organic products are more nutritious and safer than conventional foods." That's fine, you might say. You don't eat organic foods just because of the health benefits, but because you care about the treatment of farm animals and of the environment. Unfortunately, the facts don't support these beliefs either. Animals on organic farms are not generally healthier than regular farms. A five-year US study of dairy farms showed that "health outcomes [for animals on organic farms] are similar to conventional dairies." And the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety reached a similar conclusion. It found "no difference in objective disease occurrence" on organic dairy farms as compared to conventional dairies. And while pigs and poultry on organic farms may enjoy better access to open areas, this freedom, studies show, also increases their exposure to parasites, pathogens and predators. As for the environment, yes, organic farming will mean that in any one field, a farmer will use less energy and create fewer greenhouse gases. But there's a problem here. By forgoing fertilizers and pesticides, organic farming is much, much less efficient than standard farming, which means that organic farmers need much more land to grow the same amount of food. A major study in Europe found that to produce the same gallon of milk organically, you need 59% more land. To produce meat, you need 82% more land. And for crops, it’s more than 200%. And more land for agriculture means less land for nature. If U.S. agricultural production was entirely organic, it would mean we would need to convert an area bigger than the size of California entirely to farmland. Economically, the lower productivity of organics means we have to commit more resources - land, labor and capital. The total cost to the US economy of going organic would run to about $200 billion annually. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/organic-food-worth-cost

Recycling tyres: road to success - business planet

Eco-innovation is a real opportunity for entrepreneurs. Eco-businesses employ a total of 3.4... euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe for your daily dose of international news, curated and explained:http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a Euronews is available in 13 other languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU http://www.euronews.com/2013/06/28/recycling-tyres-road-to-success Eco-innovation is a real opportunity for entrepreneurs. Eco-businesses employ a total of 3.4 million people across Europe. This week, Business Planet takes a trip to Croatia for a closer look at a very specific kind of innovation: noise barriers. The noise barriers being built along the motorway near Zagreb are spearheading innovation. They are made up of 40 percent of recycled tyres and are among the most efficient on the market. They are the result of a project launched in 2009 as part of the European Eco-Innovation programme. One of the companies involved in their production is an SME which recycles tyres, turning them into a powder used to build the barriers. It's a great opportunity for innovation, says the company's chairman: "If we achieve the goals that were set, we're hoping to hire up to 30 people and double our production capacity," says Damir Kirić, the chairman of Gumiimpex. The powder is mixed with cement at another factory, where the noise barriers are moulded. Here, too, it's hoped the project will help hire an extra 60 people. "It's opened up new doors. We're hoping to increase turnover by 25 percent in Croatia, but also in neighbouring countries," says the Managing Director of Beton Lučko, Danica Jelenić. It's a serious investment. Danica Jelenić put in 355 000 euros. She is delighted with the result. "Taking part in this project has really strengthened our position. We're taken seriously by other players on the market," she says. The European Eco-Innovation programme gives access to subsidies to launch a project. To this day, it has benefited 200 projects throughout Europe. The noise barrier project was born at Zagreb University. It is the brainchild of professor Stjepan Lakušić. Half of the project was funded by the Eco-Innovation programme, which provided half a million euros. Now, the plan is to sell this innovative technology to neighbouring countries, where there is always a need for fresh ideas on how to recycle tyres. "You need 65 tonnes of recycled tyres to produce a kilometre-long barrier that's one metre high. That's 8,000 old tyres," says RUCONBAR Project Coordinator Stjepan Lakušić. This new technology has already attracted a number of potential buyers seduced by the low production cost. "Using recycled products brings down the cost by ten to eighteen percent compared to similar products on the market," says Stjepan Lakušić. The chairman of Gumiimpex, Damir Kirić, describes his recipe for success: Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

UBC Connects with Michio Kaku - Investing in Space Exploration vs. Solving Problems on Earth

03:33
Learn more: https://events.ubc.ca/michio-kaku/ About the Talk: In his characteristic fun, friendly and highly accessible manner, theoretical physicist and bestselling author Michio Kaku presents a succinct history of physics and makes a compelling case for why this particular branch of science is the key to pretty much everything. He argues that physicists may soon shrink the science of the Big Bang into an equation as small as Einstein’s famous e=mc², and that advances in string theory may allow us to escape the heat death of the universe, explore the multiverse, and unlock the secrets of existence. Whether you slept through high school science or are about to defend your thesis in quantum physics, your curiosity and imagination is sure to be ignited by this spellbinding session with one of the world’s most famous scientists. About the Speaker: A graduate of Harvard and UC Berkeley, Dr. Michio Kaku is one of the most widely recognized figures in science in the world today. He is an internationally recognized authority in Einstein’s unified field theory and is highly respected for predicting trends affecting business, medicine, finance, and our way of life, based on the latest research in science. He has authored three New York Times bestsellers, appears regularly on national and international TV, and hosts numerous science TV and radio programs. He has more than three million Facebook fans and more than half a million Twitter followers. He holds the Henry Semat Chair in Theoretical Physics at the City University of New York where he has taught for almost 30 years. A co-founder of string theory, his goal is to complete Einstein’s dream of a “theory of everything” and to derive an equation-perhaps no more than one inch long-which will summarize all the physical laws of the universe.

Turbulent Is Ready to Change the World!

02:28
After 2 years of engineering and build iterations the team of Turbulent has finished its first 15kW low-head hydropower turbine. This is a scalable technology that can be installed at any kind of water fall, rapid, or water control structure in rivers and canals. By basing this turbine on the principle of a whirlpool, it is both fish friendly and can let debris pass through. Find us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TurbulentHydro/ or visit our website for more information: http://www.turbulent.be/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amazing how we suddenly have so many views and comments! And thank you for all of the advice! I just want to clarify a few things I saw asked in the comments: - We shot this footage during commissioning. When installing a hydropower turbine you first test it for a while at half the nominal flow. That's what you see passing through this turbine. It doesn't look very stable yet, as it needs additional flow for the vortex to stabilize itself (Think about how you get that sucking sound at the last few liters running from your bath tub). Full flow of this turbine is 1.8m3/s with a height difference of 1.7m. That gives 15kW of useful electric power with our efficiency of 50%. - When we were finished shooting the video, we put back the trash rack (with a spacing between the bars of 10cm as that is the maximum debris size that can pass through) and the mesh that covers the whole basin. No children, dogs, pirates,... can fall in. -60 homes can be powered in Chile with an average household power demand of 0.25 kW. The average in many European countries is 0.5 kW. The average in American homes could well be a few MW if the comments are to go by :P -Yes, waterwheels have been done before, and turbines as well. We don't claim to have invented hydropower. We claim, however, that we have made this size of hydropower an interesting investment with a lower cost and a higher efficiency. Our hope is to offer a clean, eco-friendly alternative for investors, land owners, industries etc to generate power from the rivers that they have running in their neighborhood. As one of the co-founders, I can tell you that I enjoy nature, and that I want my kids growing up learning about and seeing technologies that try to work in harmony with it. - Some rivers meander too much for our technology. These rivers aren't suitable. We know about this, thank you for mentioning it. -We're not related to any kickstarter or crowdfund campaign. I made the video in my spare time as a hobby and I'm honestly a bit surprised that it became so popular. What I was hoping for, was to meet like minded people who want to help make our vision a reality. Affordable electrification for all without harming nature. A lot of people here have been really nice, with lots of helpful advice. Thank you for that! I believe we, as a society, can achieve anything if we just work together. - Any good scientific peer review should scrutinize the numbers. I'm busy making a new video with full flow footage and footage of our inverter power readout. Please tell me what you'd like to see in there and I'll try and arrange it :) - Last but not least: we're still in the testing phase. Currently we're checking all the systems and we're making sure this turbine can do what it promises. It seems to be holding up well against erosion and debris. We had some power cable heating, but got it solved. We will also be conducting fish friendliness tests. The whole design was based on the fish friendly design parameters of the Alden turbine Labs. We will validate those numbers. This model is now being worked on and we will be ready by July 2018 with our testing phase. When all of that is done, we will be ready to start helping people everywhere to develop their very own hydropower turbine and build their future! Thank you for your attention, stay tuned for more updates!

Soil to Sky - Our vision and inspiration

09:56
The Ecological Sequestration Trust and the world's first integrated ecological - social and economic systems model http://resilience.io introduced in a short film. Soil to Sky is presented in partnership with the International Centre for Earth Simulation. The film was first presented at the Mansion House in London at the invitation of Fiona Woolf. Our planet, our home is a world of deserts, forests, mountains, wetlands, oceans and complex atmospherics an intricate web of interlocking ecosystems that supports all life, including our own. Yet that life and beauty is under threat. For two hundred thousand years, humanity has thrived on the earth’s natural resources but in the last century our use of them has accelerated to such an extent, that it questions our current model for human development. We have treated success as ever increasing consumption and growth and not accounted for the cost of pollution and natural capital loss. Our world is experiencing the largest wave of urban growth in history. By 2030 5 billion people will be living in towns and cities. Huge investments are being made that will determine living patterns for a hundred years, during which time we will be increasingly affected by global environmental and economic change. But the local conditions can only be accurately taken into account when the global picture is clear. Bob Bishop, founder of the International Centre for Earth Simulation, is bringing together whole earth systems models so that we can understand earth system changes and their impact on city regions. An example is the impact of glacier melt in the Himalayas on river flows in India, China and South East Asia home to nearly 40% of the world’s population. Earth observation satellites provide continuous information about the planet, and the best city-regional models are wired with today’s technology to provide data streams from local sensor networks, smart phones and tablets. Finding a new paradigm for sustainable livelihoods will involve linking global and local systems, it will involve forging an understanding that we, and our towns and cities, do not stand apart from nature but are in a symbiotic relationship with it. Peter Head founder of the Ecological Sequestration Trust is. in partnership with ICES, helping bring all this together for use in city regions. Together, Peter Head and Bob Bishop realised that we need to understand and link the way human and ecological activity interact and impact on our well-being; and based on this knowledge, create the practical tools we need for making decisions and investment choices. Gandhi said there is no point in running fast unless you are running in the right direction. This story is about enabling communities all over the world to find that direction and access the funding to improve human well-being. Surat in India, is a city of 4.3 Million people. A population that is growing at a time when the vital monsoon rains are becoming increasingly unpredictable. To help the city adapt to these challenges, Peter proposed creating an integrated model of the city, so that local people could model the investments that would improve human and ecological health and well-being. In the backstreets of Surat he made a valuable discovery – one which was the inspiration behind The Ecological Sequestration Trust. Surat is a centre for diamond cutting. 80% of the world’s small diamonds are cut and polished here. Peter was surprised to find the factory was a modern five story block, and the work place for 2000 young people, all from a select group of local villages, which compete for process excellence in return for wage and accommodation. Diamond mining involves seeing through dirty, unpromising rock and searching for the beauty and riches that we can create from within. Music BREAK What is true of diamond mining is also true of our run down and unproductive towns and cities. The potential is there, but it needs to be discovered, nurtured and supported using human ingenuity. We try to improve lives, but we use different policies in different nations – we don’t integrate our efforts and people lose hope, even in rich nations. We need to find the valuable jewel within; in the same way that the computer identifies the position of the diamonds within the coarse rock, allowing them to be extracted with lasers, making the process incredibly precise and highly efficient. A combination of advanced technology and highly motivated, skilled people from the villages, creates the diamonds, their value and the wealth of that ultimately supports their communities...
Crowdfunding: Creating a place of health & healing in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

05:36
Download our brochure on: http://ayni.world/ In The Netherlands, we live in one of the most prosperous societies in the world. Yet every year we see more disease. More than half of the population, even here, are overweight – and that is true of most Western countries. Each year, there are more incidences of cancer, diabetes and medical conditions that we don’t have to get, which are more present than ever in our society. For me, there is such a big disconnect in terms of what we need in our lives and what we put in our mouths. My personal feeling is that I don’t want to become a statistic in this society. I don’t want my children to become statistics in a society where disease increases each year. Where we have more cases of depression and burn-out than ever before. This is not how we have to live our lives. My name is Jesse van der Velde and I am an author of many number 1 bestselling books. I am the founder of Bioprofiel, where over the past few years, we have gone on a journey of health with more than 100 000 people. More than 15 000 health analyses have been done at Bioprofiel. On a one-on-one basis, we have joined people in their search for more optimal nutrition, a better lifestyle, which supplements to take and activities to do. But health is about more than just the physical. You cannot teach someone online what the mental/emotional component is to good health, it is something that you have to experience for yourself. Learning how to deal with stress, finding peace, silence and strength in yourself. And part 2 of my life, and for us as a company, is to offer this here. At a mini estate where we want to meet people and walk beside them every step of the way. This place is only 15 minutes outside of Amsterdam and located in an area of 30 000 square metres of nature. It is a place where people can come to stay for one week to again connect with their inner self. To discover again: Who am I, what do I want, what do I dream about, what is my truth, my vision for my lie and where is my heart? To learn to let go of that which no longer serves us. But there is also the physical health side. On a week here, we will offer optimal nutrition, movement, rest, meditation, breathing exercises, silence, and for that we need this place. That is why I am asking for your help. To help us with crowdfunding to finance all of this. Our mission in our company is "Make the medicine, the medicine again" Our Mother Earth has literally given us all of the medicine that we need – all the nutrition, the vegetables, the plants, the herbs. In the East, people have known for thousands of years how our heart, silence and the inner connection are just as important and unmistakeable as medicine for our total health. And bringing this to The Netherlands, and to this spot, is for us "Make the medicine, the medicine again". We see it as a place for really caring for your health, because we already have healthcare. But where do you go to really feel good? There is such a big difference between being free of disease and having optimal health. We all know that such a purer state of health exists and we also know how it is not to be healthy. This is what we want to offer, guided by the best therapists, coaches and experts. We will give people the knowledge and the systems that they can use for the rest of their lives. My team and I would like to invite you to make this dream come true, with us. We need a total of 2,4 million euro to realise this project. And we would like to ask you to help us with the mortgage with an investment of 10.000 euro or more. The property and the estate are the collateral. You take out a mortgage and this guarantees your investment. You receive interest. After 5 years you have a choice: receive back all of your investment or extend your mortgage with us. We have already received more than 90 000 euro in financing. I hope with all of my heart that you will share this dream with us and want to make it come true, together. “I think that in these times, when people are under pressure and super stressed, it’s great that there is always a place where you can go to, to find peace again.” - English testimonial – "Investing actually is never just about money. It is about the value that you associate with it. You are a part of a much bigger picture, where you can make a contribution to better health, vitality, strength and human consciousness. And that is worth the investment” "Jesse has often shown that he is capable of doing beautiful, big things and if he is planning something like this, then I can say nothing but: "Go for it". Do you have questions? Download the brochure or contact us. Would you like to invest? Let us know. My name is Jesse van der Velde and I have a dream.

Energy Within Environmental Constraints | HarvardX on edX | Course About Video

01:19
A quantitative introduction to the energy system and its environmental impacts. Take this course free on edX: https://www.edx.org/course/energy-within-environmental-constraints-harvardx-engsci137x ABOUT THIS COURSE Humanity faces an immense challenge: providing abundant energy to everyone without wrecking the planet. If we want a high-energy future while protecting the natural world for our children, we must consider the environmental consequences of energy production and use. But money matters too: energy solutions that ignore economic costs are not realistic—particularly in a world where billions of people currently can’t afford access to basic energy services. How can we proceed? Energy Within Environmental Constraints won’t give you the answer. Instead, we will teach you how to ask the right questions and estimate the consequences of different choices. This course is intended for a diverse audience. Whether you are a student, an activist, a policymaker, a business owner, or a concerned citizen, this course will help you start to think carefully about our current energy system and how we can improve its environmental performance. This course: - Covers engineering, environmental science, and economics to enable critical, quantitative thinking about our energy system - Focuses on a working understanding of energy technologies, rich in details of real devices and light on theory; you won’t find any electrodynamics here but will find enough about modern commercial solar panels to estimate if they would be profitable to install in a given location - Covers environmental impacts of the energy system, focusing on air pollution, climate change, and land use - Emphasizes costs: the cascade of capital and operating costs from energy extraction all the way through end uses - Emphasizes quantitative comparisons and tradeoffs: how much more expensive is electricity from solar panels than from coal plants, and how much pollution does it prevent? Is solar power as cost-effective an environmental investment as nuclear power or energy efficiency? And how do we include considerations other than cost? Please note that this is an abridged course, equivalent to roughly half of a full semester-long undergraduate course. See the syllabus for topics that we include and a list of some we exclude.

Jayantha Obeysekera - Sea level rise, Climate Change and Water Management in South Florida

52:12
Jayantha Obeysekera - Chief Modeler, South Florida Water Management District Sea Level Rise, Climate Change, and Water Resources Management in South Florida: Implications, Challenges, and Adaptation Through Federal/State/Local partnerships, the Greater Everglades, once a free-flowing, natural marsh system in southern Florida, is being restored under numerous water resources management projects requiring large investments of time and money. Rising sea levels are already causing challenges in water resources management of the rapidly growing urban environment in south Florida. Future climate change and sea level rise have the potential to cause significant impacts on flood control and water supply functions of water resources management, and on existing and future ecosystem restoration projects. An assessment of the precipitation projections of climate models shows that their ability to represent the landscape of Florida and predict historical climate patterns may be limited. To understand the vulnerability of the regional water management system in a changing environment, a sensitivity analysis using a regional-scale, hydrologic and water management model was conducted. This presentation will provide a summary of technical investigations on climate variability, climate change, and sea level rise to address the current and future water management concerns and the adaptation approaches that are being used. New approaches for hydrologic designs of infrastructure to deal with nonstationarity associated with climate change will also be discussed

Time-lapse of Eco art installation by Eco Art Installations (March 2014)

www.ecoartinstallations.org India and many places in the World have a huge problem with managing waste. The West does too - it's just they are better at hiding it in land fills! Many countries simply don't have the infrastructure to manage waste properly, hence rubbish everywhere due to a lack of recycling plants. Many international corporations provide their products in packaging, but don't seem to take responsibility to provide suitable means of disposal. Rubbish isn't just rubbish -- it is a resource -- Treasure! We are more than consumers - we are all Artists, co-creators of reality. At Eco art installations we choose to unite and explore our creative potential, raise awareness of ecological issues, and present our vision of beautiful co-creation. This Eco art installation took place in March 2014 at the Bamboo Centre in Auroville, India. As seen in the video, there was dancing and people used natural and recycled materials for art installations and workshops. The money seen in the video were donations made at the Eco art installation. They amounted to 2506 IND rupees (£25.60). This money is now invested in the Mohanam Cultural Centre Arts Activity Trust. It is a small donation towards manifesting: - Kottakarai Children's Arts Centre in Auroville, India - Bamboo dome work space for women at the Bamboo Centre in Auroville, to make Arts and Crafts for the purpose of Social Enterprise. To see photographs, find out about the collaborators or to help manifest these two Art centres and another Eco art installation in the Amazon Rainforest please go to: www.ecoartinstallations.org

OPERATION LEAD - INTERPOL ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME PROGRAMME

03:17
Nearly USD 40 million worth of timber has been seized in follow up investigations as part of INTERPOL's Operation Lead targeting illegal logging, forest crimes and the criminal networks behind them. Building upon the initial outcomes of the operation, Costa Rica and Venezuela in particular have increased their efforts in the fight against illegal logging, confiscating 292,000 m3 of wood and wood products -- equivalent to 19,500 truckloads - during follow-up investigations and operations. Venezuela accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total, with 188,000 m3 of wood seized in a single month. Law enforcement agencies in the two countries conducted intelligence gathering to identify locations where illegal logging was occurring, transportation routes and the criminals involved in all phases of the process. Using this intelligence, authorities carried out operations at logging camps, sawmills and transportation corridors. Project Leaf is a consortium initiative led by INTERPOL, with the United Nations Environment Programme and with the financial support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. The project supports countries in tackling illegal logging and forestry crime, which undermine attempts to implement national and international forest protection policies and sustainable forestry practices. "Norway and the global society have invested for years in the conservation of forests to save the earth from the dangerous effects of climate change, protect biodiversity and help people who live in and depend on forests," said Norway's Minister for International Development, Heikki Eidsvoll Holmås. "We cannot accept organized crime destroying our achievements for their personal profits. I therefore welcome the results achieved through the INTERPOL Environmental Crime Programme's capacity building initiatives and law enforcement operations," he added. The first phase of Operation Lead, held under the auspices of INTERPOL's Environmental Crime Programme and its Project Leaf, was conducted in 12 Latin American countries in late 2012. As INTERPOL's first international operation targeting large-scale illegal logging and forest crime, it resulted in nearly 200 arrests and seizures of more than 50,000 m3 of wood, estimated at around USD 8 million. "The ongoing law enforcement operations in Latin America demonstrate the profound and long-lasting impact of INTERPOL's environmental crime initiatives. We continue to support countries, and the international community, in their fight against illegal logging and forest crime," said David Higgins, Head of INTERPOL's Environmental Crime Programme. "It is important to continue to evolve our enforcement efforts and build on the successes of previous operations to begin to target international criminal operations responsible for large-scale illegal logging," concluded Mr Higgins. In addition to the ongoing law enforcement operations, Venezuelan authorities have been leading replanting efforts in affected areas, reforesting some 8,000 hectares. They have also implemented educational programmes to inform the public about the dangers associated with illegal logging. Operation Lead participating countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.

Breaking News - Businesswoman on how she discovered ethical capitalism

The penny dropped when I saw my pension fund was invested in BP, Shell and British American Tobacco. How could I let my hard-earned cash finance companies which depend on burning fossil fuels and keeping people hooked on cigarettes? It made no sense that I could be donating to Cancer Research one minute – I have lost my grandmother, father and one of my best friends to lung cancer – but the next, sticking £400 a month into an investment fund helping to keep the tobacco industry alive.Similarly, how silly to be recycling and buying 100 per cent renewable energy while handing over my savings to companies with a vested interest in pumping out more carbon dioxide. We should all preserve what we have for future generations, but if I am enjoying 20 per cent annual growth from funds that do the opposite, am I really doing the best for my boys – William six, and Theo, three? For me, putting money into solutions to problems rather than cynically making money from the problems themselves has become a normal part of 'doing my bit'.It is easier now too, thanks to a wide range of sustainability-themed funds.I have not done badly financially out of my conscience either – and my money is invested in projects I am proud to tell my kids about.Part of my pension is in the Nest Ethical option while more of my old occupational pension scheme will be moved to PensionBee's new Future World fund when it launches later this month. My Isa is in the WHEB Sustainability fund, which has returned 17 per cent in the 18 months since I started investing in it.My Lifetime Isa is in a mix of ethical funds. They include Liontrust Sustainable Futures Absolute Growth (17 per cent return in the past year); Pictet Water (10.5 per cent); Royal London Sustainable Leaders (11 per cent); and Colombia Threadneedle Social Bond (the only poor performer with a 0.3 per cent decline). The boys' Junior Isas are in WHEB Sustainability, Jupiter Ecology and Kames Ethical Equity. To complete my ethical finances, I also bank with eco-friendly Triodos.Ethical capitalism. It pays and is rewarding.Rebecca O'Connor is co-founder of Good With Money, the responsible money website. It uses electric vehicles on steel wheels riding on specific string rails. SkyWay is an elevated over ground high-speed, urban and cargo transport system in which traffic is arranged on a track structure made of specially designed pre-stressed rails that are stretched between anchor supports. The rolling stock speed can compete with that of the airplane and its traffic is controlled automatically. SkyWay technological advances the aim to solve ever-increasing transport problems such as traffic jams and consequently increased travel time, eliminate heavy mortality as a result of traffic accidents and avoid deterioration of the ecological situation. The main design differences of this system from other types of railroads of trestle design are pre-stressed tension of the structure, the absence of a continuous solid roadbed, low materials intensity in construction and visual simplicity. The main advantages are economic efficiency, environmental friendliness, durability, reliability, safety and, consequently, high market competitiveness. Designing, construction and certification of the breakthrough SkyWay transport system is executed by the engineering company SkyWay Technologies Co.
