FRM: Treasury STRIPS

03:55
P-STRIPS and C-STRIPS are popular because: 1. They can be combined or re-constructed into any required sequence of cash flows, and 2. They are more sensitive to interest rates (i.e., higher duration) than coupon-bearing bonds (all other things being equal). Stripping a bond

04:15
This brief video provides a very high-level description of the process of creating zero coupon bonds from standard "bullet" bonds. Further, it introduces the idea of the reconstitution of "bullet" bonds from strips. This does not get into the details, but merely introduces the idea and some terminology. Note that some of the jargon is native to the Canadian bond market; however, the big ideas generalize to most other markets.

February 15th - This Day in Stock Market History

01:16
February 15th – This Day in Stock Market History For more, visit: https://www.begintoinvest.com/february-15/ February 15th, 1898 – The US Battleship Maine is sunk near Cuba after hitting a mine. US Stock markets would decline 16% over the next 4 weeks as fear of war spread. By April the United States would be at war with Spain. February 15th, 1933 – Then President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt escapes an attempted assassination in Miami. A man shouting “Too many people are starving!” as he fired several shots at FDR – evidence of the terrible economy Roosevelt was destined to inherit and turn around. Stocks fall 2.15% the following day. February 15th, 1955 – Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates announces that it will acquire Hathaway Manufacturing Company in exchange for 400,000 shares of Berkshire common stock. The new company will be called “Berkshire Hathaway Inc.” At the time the company would be a giant in America’s northeast textile industry. The new company would have 10,000 employees and 14 different textile plants. However joining forces would not save the company from trouble. Over the next 7 years, Berkshire Hathaway would close 9 of its 14 plants and would see the company’s value shrink by 37%. It would be another 10 years before Buffett takes over the company and turns it into the famous Berkshire Hathaway that we know today. February 15th, 1985 – The U.S. government begins allowing Treasury securities to be carved up, creating “STRIPS,” or Separate Trading of Registered Interest and Principal of Securities. Investors can now hedge much more easily against changes in interest rates by trading either the interest or the principal portion of a given bond, vastly increasing the liquidity of the government bond market. For example, a Treasury note with 10 years remaining to maturity consists of a single principal payment, due at maturity, and 20 interest payments, one every six months over a 10 year duration. If this note was converted to STRIPS form, each of the 20 interest payments and the principal payment would become a separate security. Best February 15th in Dow Jones Industrial Average History: 1991 – Up 2.0%, 57.42 points. Worst February 15th in Dow Jones Industrial Average History: 1932 – Down 4.24%, 3.64 points. What are Structured Products?

11:54
Today we will learn what structured products are. Buy The Book Here: https://amzn.to/2CLG5y2 Follow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoyle A structured product, also known as a market-linked investment, is a pre-packaged investment strategy based on a single security, a basket of securities, options, indices, commodities, debt issuance or foreign currencies, and to a lesser extent, derivatives. The variety of products just described demonstrates that there is no single, uniform definition of a structured product. A feature of some structured products is a "principal guarantee" function, which offers protection of principal if held to maturity. For example, an investor invests $100, the issuer simply invests in a risk-free bond that has sufficient interest to grow to $100 after the five-year period. This bond might cost $80 today and after five years it will grow to $100. With the leftover funds the issuer purchases the derivatives needed to perform whatever the investment strategy calls for. Theoretically an investor can just do this themselves, but the cost and transaction volume requirements of many derivatives are beyond many individual investors. Structured products are designed to facilitate highly customized risk-return objectives. This is accomplished by taking a traditional security, such as a conventional investment-grade bond, and replacing the usual payment features (e.g. periodic coupons and final principal) with non-traditional payoffs derived not from the issuer's own cash flow, but from the performance of one or more underlying assets. Structured products were created to meet specific needs that cannot be met from the standardized financial instruments available in the markets. Structured products can be used as an alternative to a direct investment, as part of the asset allocation process to reduce risk exposure of a portfolio, or to utilize the current market trend. Structured products originally became popular in Europe and are a much smaller market in the United States, where they are offered as SEC-registered products, which means they are accessible to retail investors in the same way as stocks, bonds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds. Their ability to offer customized exposure to otherwise hard-to-reach asset classes and subclasses makes structured products useful as a complement to traditional components of diversified portfolios. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Rule 434 (regarding certain prospectus deliveries) defines structured securities as "securities whose cash flow characteristics depend upon one or more indices or that have embedded forwards or options or securities where an investor's investment return and the issuer's payment obligations are contingent on, or highly sensitive to, changes in the value of underlying assets, indices, interest rates or cash flows".

Inside job (Documentary) (HD)

FIND MORE OF MY VIDEOS AT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJFkRBB4RJ7c_5Brk_489ig Inside Job is a 2010 American documentary film, directed by Charles Ferguson, about the late-2000s financial crisis. Ferguson, who began researching in 2008, says the film is about "the systemic corruption of the United States by the financial services industry and the consequences of that systemic corruption". In five parts, the film explores how changes in the policy environment and banking practices helped create the financial crisis. Inside Job was acclaimed by film critics, who praised its pacing, research and exposition of complex material. It screened at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in May and won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film was met with critical acclaim, earning a 98% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website and an aggregate score of 88/100 on Metacritic. Roger Ebert described the film as "an angry, well-argued documentary about how the American housing industry set out deliberately to defraud the ordinary American investor". A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote that "Mr. Ferguson has summoned the scourging moral force of a pulpit-shaking sermon. That he delivers it with rigor, restraint and good humor makes his case all the more devastating". Logan Hill of New York magazine characterized the film as a "rip-snorting, indignant documentary", noting the "effective presence" of narrator Matt Damon. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian said the film was "as gripping as any thriller". He went on to say that it was obviously influenced by Michael Moore, describing it as "a Moore film with the gags and stunts removed". In 2011, a Metacritic editor ranked the film first on the subject of the 2008 financial crisis. The conservative political magazine The American Spectator criticized the film as intellectually incoherent and inaccurate, accusing Ferguson of blaming "a lot of bad people [with] economic and political views to the right of [his]". The film was selected for a special screening at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. A reviewer writing from Cannes characterized the film as "a complex story told exceedingly well and with a great deal of unalloyed anger". Government Bond ETFs to Date 2016 Performance Review (ZROZ, EDV)

06:11
https://goo.gl/QPCkqk - Start earning with binary options like millions of traders do Government bonds have traditionally been a preferred option for investors seeking a safe haven from stock market volatility, of which there was plenty in the first couple of months of 2016. Government bond exchange-traded fund (ETF) assets swelled during these months as did their returns. Through March 24, 2016, the Barclays US Aggregate Bond TR USD gained 2.39 year-to-date (YTD). However, investors in long-term government bond ETFs have seen their share prices increase by 7.35%. Based on the returns of the 29 government bond ETFs, the longer the average maturity of the underlying bond portfolio, the better the return. To illustrate, the largest government bond fund, the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSEARCA: SHY) has returned 3.6% YTD, while the third-largest fund, the iShares 20+ Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ: TLT), has returned 7.6%. Short-term government bond funds are most appropriate during periods of rising interest rates because bonds with short maturities are rotated out for bonds with higher coupon rates. Should interest rates rise as expected, short-term government ETFs should be a viable alternative for low-yielding money market funds. Long-term government bond funds should continue to perform well as long as the stock market displays signs of volatility. Should interest rates rise more quickly than expected, they could reverse course and experience a decline in prices. Thus far in 2016, short- and long-term bonds are performing as expected, but there are a couple of outliers at each end of the spectrum. The Best-Performing Long-Term Bond ETFs YTD in 2016 PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon US Treasury ETF As of March 24, 2016, the PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon US Treasury ETF (NYSEARCA: ZROZ) had $246.11 million in assets under management (AUM) invested primarily in Treasury Principal STRIPs. STRIPS is an acronym for separate trading of registered interest and principal securities, which are a type of zero coupon bond. STRIPS are deeply discounted bonds that pay no current interest. Bondholders are paid the full face value of the bond at maturity. The fund seeks to replicate the performance of the BofA Merrill Lynch Long US Treasury Principal STRIPS Index. Through March 26, 2016, the fund returned an impressive 11.91%. Over the last five years it has returned 15.77%. The fund’s expense ratio is a low 0.16%. Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF The Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (NYSEARCA: EDV) has $504 million in AUM, also invested primarily in Treasury STRIPS. The fund tracks the Barclays U.S. Treasury STRIPS 20-30 Year Equal Par Bond Index and has gained 11.77% YTD in 2016. Its five-year return is 15.20%. The fund’s expense ratio is a very low 0.10%. The Worst-Performing Long-Term Bond ETFs YTD in 2016 iShares Treasury Floating Rate Bond As of March 24, 2016, the iShares Treasury Floating Rate Bond (NYSEARCA: TFLO) ETF had $15 million in AUM. The fund seeks to mirror the performance of the Barclays U.S. Trea

Commodities wizard Renée Haugerud: What you should know about the coming "inverse stagflation"

20:58
Subscribe to this channel: http://www.youtube.com/OpalesqueTV Growing up on a small farm in rural Minnesota, Renée Haugerud learned early on about commodities prices and how to hedge them. Based on an illustrious career in the world's leading commodities trading centers, in 1997 she founded Galtere Ltd., a commodity-focused global macro registered investment advisor with roughly $1 billion in assets under management today. The flagship Galtere International Master Fund boasts a 12.5% annualized return, net of fees, since inception in 1999. Galtere is a unique global macro fund with a strong focus on real assets and commodity fundamentals which have been found to influence other asset classes. In this Opalesque.TV interview, Renée gives her investment outlook for the next decade where she believes commodities will outperform other strategies during a period of "inverse stagflation" or "reverse stagflation". While the period of 1978-1982 lead to stagflation, ushering in a 30 year cycle of paper and financial outperformance, Renée identifies 2007-2011 as the beginning of a period where tangible asset will consistently beat paper products for an extended period. In addition, learn about the following: Looking through the Commodities Lens of Renée Haugerud: - Real assets drive all asset classes and geographies - Nearly 13 years at Cargill -- Experience in all asset classes and understanding asset class interrelationships - How the rural background of a sheriff's daughter leads to a passion for commodities investing - The gold arbitrage opportunity that compelled Renée to start Galtere - Money has become "the grain of the 80's": Easy money now is what cheap commodities were in the '80's - Shifting investor perceptions of commodities from high risk trade to an investment - The 2 separately overlaid trading mechanisms that drive Galtere's consistency Renée Haugerud is the Founder, Chief Investment Officer and Managing Principal of Galtere Ltd., a registered investment advisor that manages several commodity focused products. Throughout her thirty year investment career, Ms. Haugerud has acquired expertise across all asset classes, through posts in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Switzerland, Australia, and Hong Kong. She began her tenure in financial markets by trading cash commodity markets in the United States and Canada for Cargill Inc. and Continental Grain. Her interests in the relationship between financial markets and geopolitics led to her first international post in Geneva Switzerland, where she ultimately served as Cargill's Foreign Exchange Trading Manager. During her career at Cargill, Ms. Haugerud developed expertise in a broad and diverse range of securities by assuming the positions of Manager of the US Fixed Income trading desk, Minneapolis, MN; Financial Division Manager of the Melbourne Australia Office; board membership of Cargill Australia; and finally Vice President/Structural Trading Manager at Cargill's corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, MN. Following her years at Cargill, Ms. Haugerud managed proprietary trading desks at institutions including Natwest Markets in Hong Kong and Hunter Douglas N.A. in the U.S. In 1997 Renée Haugerud founded the hedge fund Galtere Ltd. Galtere's flagship strategy distinguishes itself from pure commodity strategies and from traditional global macro strategies by blending elements of both.

Long Term Bond ETFs to Date 2016 Performance Review (VGLT, VCLT)

06:11
https://goo.gl/QPCkqk - Start earning with binary options like millions of traders do Long-term bonds have turned in an impressive year-to-date (YTD) 2016 performance, even in the face of rising interest rates. Investors in long-term bond exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have been enjoying positive returns far outpacing the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. Much of the surge in bond prices can be attributed to their appeal as a safe haven during times of stock market volatility, of which there has been plenty thus far in 2016. ETFs investing in long-term investment-grade corporate bonds have gained 2.59% YTD. However, the real story has been ETFs investing in long-term government bonds, which have gained 7.35% YTD. Bond guru Jeffrey Gundlach correctly predicted a 2014 rally in Treasury bonds in anticipation of increasing interest rates, and he did so again late in 2015, even after the Federal Reserve Board hiked the rate. Gundlach believes the Federal Reserve Board’s willingness to increase rates further will keep a lid on stock prices, making Treasury bonds an attractive alternative investment. There are no long-term bond ETFs in negative YTD 2016 territory, and the top performers are showing double-digit returns. The top half of the list is dominated by government bond ETFs, while the bottom half contains primarily corporate bond ETFs. For a clearer picture of how government bonds are outperforming corporate bonds, consider the top three Vanguard long-term bond ETFs. The Vanguard Long-Term Government Bond ETF (NYSEARCA: VGLT) shows that the Vanguard Government Bond Index is up 7.3% YTD, while the Vanguard Long-Term Corporate Bond ETF (NYSEARCA: VCLT) shows that the Vanguard Corporate Bond Index is up 5.7%. The Vanguard Long-Term Bond ETF (NYSEARCA: BLV), which invests in both investment-grade corporate bonds and government bonds, is up 7.2% YTD. It just so happens that its portfolio is currently invested 47% in government and government-related bonds and 43% in corporate bonds. PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon US Treasury ETF Among the best performing long-term bond ETFs YTD in 2016 is the PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon US Treasury ETF (NYSEARCA: ZROZ), which had all of its $246.11 million in assets under management (AUM) invested in Treasury Principal STRIPs, as of March 24, 2016. STRIPs, an abbreviation of separate trading of registered interest and principal securities, are a type of zero coupon bond that offer no-interest payments. Bondholders receive a single principal payment when the bond matures. The fund’s objective is to track the BofA Merrill Lynch Long US Treasury Principal STRIPS Index. The fund’s YTD return in 2016 is a remarkable 11.91%, and it has returned 15.77% over the last five years. Its expense ratio is a low 0.16%. Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF The Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (NYSEARCA: EDV) also invests primarily in Treasury STRIPS, except it tracks the Barclays U.S. Treasury STRIPS 20-30 Year Equal Par Bond Index. Histroy of MUTUAL FUND in TAMIL

11:19
A mutual fund is a professionally managed investment fund that pools money from many investors to purchase securities. These investors may be retail or institutional in nature. Primary structures of mutual funds include open-end funds, unit investment trusts, and closed-end funds. Mutual funds are also classified by their principal investments as money market funds, bond or fixed income funds, stock or equity funds, hybrid funds or other. The mutual fund industry in India started in 1963 with the formation of Unit Trust of India, at the initiative of the Government of India and Reserve Bank of India. The history of mutual funds in India can be broadly divided into four distinct phases. Unit Trust of India (UTI) was established in 1963 by an Act of Parliament. It was set up by the Reserve Bank of India and functioned under the Regulatory and administrative control of the Reserve Bank of India. In 1978 UTI was de-linked from the RBI and the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) took over the regulatory and administrative control in place of RBI. The first scheme launched by UTI was Unit Scheme 1964. At the end of 1988 UTI had Rs. 6,700 crores of assets under management. 1987 marked the entry of non-UTI, public sector mutual funds set up by public sector banks and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC). SBI Mutual Fund was the first non-UTI Mutual Fund established in June 1987 followed by Can bank Mutual Fund (Dec 87), Punjab National Bank Mutual Fund (Aug 89), Indian Bank Mutual Fund (Nov 89), Bank of India (Jun 90), Bank of Baroda Mutual Fund (Oct 92). LIC established its mutual fund in June 1989 while GIC had set up its mutual fund in December 1990.At the end of 1993, the mutual fund industry had assets under management of Rs. 47,004 crores. With the entry of private sector funds in 1993, a new era started in the Indian mutual fund industry, giving the Indian investors a wider choice of fund families. Also, 1993 was the year in which the first Mutual Fund Regulations came into being, under which all mutual funds, except UTI were to be registered and governed. The erstwhile Kothari Pioneer (now merged with Franklin Templeton) was the first private sector mutual fund registered in July 1993. The 1993 SEBI (Mutual Fund) Regulations were substituted by a more comprehensive and revised Mutual Fund Regulations in 1996. The industry now functions under the SEBI (Mutual Fund) Regulations 1996. The number of mutual fund houses went on increasing, with many foreign mutual funds setting up funds in India and also the industry has witnessed several mergers and acquisitions. As at the end of January 2003, there were 33 mutual funds with total assets of Rs. 1,21,805 crores. The Unit Trust of India with Rs. 44,541 crores of assets under management was way ahead of other mutual funds. In February 2003, following the repeal of the Unit Trust of India Act 1963 UTI was bifurcated into two separate entities. One is the Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India with assets under management of Rs. 29,835 crores as at the end of January 2003, representing broadly, the assets of US 64 scheme, assured return and certain other schemes. The second is the UTI Mutual Fund, sponsored by SBI, PNB, BOB and LIC. It is registered with SEBI and functions under the Mutual Fund Regulations. With the bifurcation of the erstwhile UTI which had in March 2000 more than Rs. 76,000 crores of assets under management and with the setting up of a UTI Mutual Fund, conforming to the SEBI Mutual Fund Regulations, and with recent mergers taking place among different private sector funds, the mutual fund industry has entered its current phase of consolidation and growth. The countries with the largest mutual fund industries are United States: $18.9 trillion Luxembourg: $3.9 trillion Ireland: $2.2 trillion Germany: $1.9 trillion France: $1.9 trillion Australia: $1.6 trillion United Kingdom: $1.5 trillion Japan: $1.5 trillion China: $1.3 trillion Brazil: $1.1 trillion

Government regulation: Where do we go from here? (1977) | ARCHIVES

58:51
December 19, 1977: This AEI Public Policy Forum deals with the growth of government regulation, which has stimulated increasing debate in recent years in academic, political, and public policy circles. The issues discussed here range from the practical implementation of given policy objectives to the philosophical basis on which these objectives are decided. Some argue that to improve regulatory activities, a total reassessment of government's role in the private economy is required. Others maintain that past shortcomings result from poorly coordinated government policies. Thus, future policies turn on a consideration of economic incentives and other means of attaining regulatory goals and on a rational assessment of the costs and benefits of each regulatory activity. Panelists: John C. Danforth — Senator (R-Missouri) William Proxmire — Senator (D-Wisconsin) Paul W. MacAvoy — professor of economics at Yale University Harrison Welford — executive associate director for reorganization and management of the Office of Management and Budget Moderator: John Charles Daly Host: Peter Hackes In 1977, transcripts were available by mail for a small fee.
