It was disestablished on 30 June 2011 and its functions taken over by the Environmental Protection Authority. ERMA was principally responsible for implementing the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO). The aim of ERMA was stated as: "Achieve effective prevention or management of risks to the environment, public health and safety associated with importing or manufacturing hazardous substances and introducing new organisms, and their use."ERMA made decisions on applications under Part V of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, by evaluating risks, costs and benefits, placing conditions on approvals; and making decisions on transitional licences and other approvals. ERMA used risk management principles contained in the Methodology to guide its work. Under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, the Authority was required to consider and weigh up the adverse and beneficial effects of a new organism or substance. The detailed decisions of the Authority also give an insight into how it has dealt with different aspects of risks, costs and benefits. To mitigate any risks they applied controls (where relevant and possible) to the application, just as in everyday life we wear seatbelts to reduce the risks associated with driving. The controls might include housing the organism or substance in a specially designed laboratory or they may be to wear protective equipment when handling a certain hazardous chemical. The Authority's role was to manage risks to the environment and to public health, and they did this through their decision-making processes on applications. When ERMA received an application to import a new organism or a new substance they weighed up the adverse and beneficial effects on society, the environment, public health etc. and in many cases asked the general public to make submissions as to whether the new organism or substance should be allowed into New Zealand.

The concept of risk and how it is managed

16:44
So often, articles, standards and even regulations concerned with managing risk fail to explain specifically and in plain language exactly what is being managed – in other words the meaning of risk on which the article, standard or regulation is based is not explained. This not only means that their central thesis is fuzzy but typically, results in a lack of rigour in the thinking that follows. Similarly, there is a failure to specifically articulate what management means, what are the parameters of good risk management and what empirical process of management is being assumed.

I’m particularly indebted to Alan Hale whose Dynamics of Accidents Model was my first exposure to the causes of accidents. Others who paved the way before me include Cathy Haddock from the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council for her book Managing Risks in Outdoor Activities and the Accident Matrix© developed by Dan Meyer and refined by Jed Williamson. All of these models addressed a part of how accidents happen but I didn’t find that they any of them told the whole story, so I developed the Risk Assessment and Safety Management Model (RASM). I hope that you find it a useful approach to risk management for your program. Thanks to Twentieth Century Fox for permission to incorporate the two clips from Cast Away in this education presentation. Rick Curtis

Project Risk Management

04:08
Risk Management includes the processes of identification, analysis and either acceptance or mitigation of uncertainty in projectdecision-making. Risk management occurs anytime a project manager manager analyzes and attempts to qualify and quantify of project threats or opportunities, then takes the appropriate action (or inaction) given the project objectives and risk tolerance. Inadequate risk management can result in severe consequences for projects and organizations as well as individuals. Simply put, risk management is determining what risks exist in an project and then handling those risks in a way best-suited to the project's objectives. Risk management occurs throughout the project lifecycle and is relevant to all projects whether they are in the public or private sector, or whether they are large or small. It should form part of the culture of the organisation with clear responsibilities laid down for every manager and employee to be involved in the project. Risk management supports accountability, performance measurement and rewards, thus promoting efficiency at all levels. As part of PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements program, a PMP credential holder will need to earn 60 Personal Development Units (PDUs) during every three-year cycle. PMI will recognize activities that involve personally conducted research or study, including discussions and coaching sessions with colleagues or clients. Such activities should make use of informational materials like articles, books and videos like the ones in this course. Within this course, we offer daily discussions that you may choose to join. This course may also be submitted for PDUs once you have earned the PMP credential. To learn more about PDUs, how to earn and claim them, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to renew your certification, you can reference the PMP HANDBOOK found at the PMI.org website. How Much Should I Risk Per Trade? (Risk Management For Beginners)

08:42
Trading risk management - learn how to calculate how much you should risk when trading. In this video - 'Trading Risk Management - How Much Should I Risk Per Trade' I look at the factors a trader should consider when deciding what proportion of on their account they should risk on each trade they take. Within this risk management analysis, I look at how the amount of your capital risked may effect the overall survival of your trading account and how it may affect you mentally. Day trading can be a frustrating task and if a trader lets their emotions take over because their risk management wasn't implemented correctly by being over exposed, it can lead to further mistakes and further trading losses. Alex Sidorenko talks to Grant Purdy on why most risk management practices don't work

51:11
Alex Sidorenko from RISK-ACADEMY talks to Grant Purdy, Associate director, Broadleaf, who I personally consider being one of the godfathers of Australian risk management. FULL TRANSCRIPT https://www.rev.com/transcript-editor/shared/LZ7RH2yxG2UcBjTiPVwoeE3aSq16INkf1zSTCY-JX2KqdwLjVOM8TFfXoOm3ylCVGYaBrg We touched on some of the most amazing topics in risk management and why most of the concepts don't work. This is probably the most fun I had during an interview ever. Couldn't stop laughing the whole time. Sorry about the audio quality, we searched for the most tranquil place in Melbourne and it still ended up being too noisy. Trust me, it is worth it. GRANT PURDY Grant Purdy has specialised in the practical application of risk management to support decision making for nearly 40 years, working across a wide range of industries and in over 25 countries. Grant works with many types of organisations helping them develop and enhance ways to understand and respond to uncertainty in support of the decisions they make. This involves mentoring, training and giving advice, predominantly to senior managers and boards. Grant is an accomplished facilitator, trainer and speaker and has had over 100 papers and articles published and has authored and co-authored several books and many handbooks. He speaks regularly at conferences and webinars.Grant has been a member of the Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand Joint Technical Committee on Risk Management for over 14 years and was its chair for seven. He is co-author of the 2004 version of AS/NZS 4360 and has authored many other risk management handbooks, guides and books. He was also the nominated expert for Australia on the Working Group that wrote ISO 31000 and Guide 73 and later Head of Delegation for Australia on ISO PC 262 that will revise ISO 31000 http://broadleaf.com.au/people/grant-purdy/ RISK-ACADEMY At RISK-ACADEMY we have compiled free videos of lectures, seminars and interviews with Russian risk managers, as well as free templates and examples of the tools required for the implementation of elements of risk management in the organization of small and medium-sized businesses. Risk Management: Social Media Liability for Business

01:52
New York Business Insurance http://therubingroup.com/2012/12/risk-management-social-media-liability-for-businesses/ http://therubingroup.com/business-insurance-new-york/ Risk Management: Social Media Liability for Businesses Progressive recently settled a claim with a family whose daughter was killed in an auto accident. The victim's brother claimed that in an effort not pay the family the full claim amount, they actually defended the other driver in court. The situation is unique not only because of the unusual claims, but how the information reached the public. Matt Fisher, Katie Fisher's brother, detailed his accusations in a blog post. Social Media Liability is an extremely important topic, that many small businesses are unaware of. The post erupted in the news and sent thousands to the company's social media sites. More than 2,000 people took to Twitter to denounce the company. Over 1,000 tweeted they dropped Progressive as their insurer, and another 1,600 said they didn't want to do business with Progressive. All this occurred in a four day time period. Progressive settled the case with the family, but the negative publicity has raged on. The incident shows an increasing business liability risks as more companies integrate their businesses into social media realms. Social media allows companies to interact with their customers in real time. It is a great connective tool, educational resource, and way to build stronger relationships with customers. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn can help make your business more successful. It also exposes you to additional risks. Pictures, articles, and information can be shared immediately. The speedy delivery of information also increases a businesses' risk of court cases and publicity nightmares. It is a particularly unique risk for small to midsize business owners. Large businesses invest money, time, and training into their social media strategy. Small business owner simply don't have the resources, or the legal aid to handle a social media blooper that goes sour. Take the time to train your employees and develop a social media policy. Keep careful tabs on what you post, and how you interact with your customers. It will help you avoid headaches later down the road. Check out the latest video on RISK-ACADEMY channel: https://goo.gl/bFBP1a Join Francois Blouin, Senior Manager, Risk Management – Culture and Transformation at National Bank of Canada and Alex Sidorenko, RISK-ACADEMY, to talk about risk culture and what it means to an organization. We will try to share some fun and practical stories and steps we took to create, strengthen, encourage risk culture. Here is a little anecdote from me: one of the executives at the largest sovereign fun where I worked created the term “derisking”. It literally meant running a Monte-Carlo simulation on a business plan or budget to replace single point estimate with a range, which would give an executive much more flexibility to choose what goes into the final documents and gets sent to the government. That is one good risk culture! IEAM Podcast 29: Finding the right ecotox studies for risk assessment, with Christina Rudén

09:43
Podcast Summary: It’s tempting to assume that ecotoxicologists of all professions utilize peer-reviewed studies as part of their research when conducting hazard or risk assessments under a regulatory framework. Yet that is not always the case, quite the contrary in fact. While it’s easy to incorporate the results of a study conducted under standardized methods such as good laboratory practices, the vast majority of studies do not conform to universal protocols, making it harder for regulators to vet and extract necessary data. Enter relevance assessment: an evaluation designed to help practitioners identify the most appropriate sources for the topic being addressed. Christina Ruden and colleagues offer practical guidance to evaluating relevance in their article “Assessing the relevance of ecotoxicological studies for regulatory decision making.” The article is part of the special series “Improving the Usability of Ecotoxicology in Regulatory Decision-Making.” Access the series in the July 2017 (http://setac.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/issue/10.1002/ieam.v13.4/) issue of IEAM. About the Guest Christina Rudén is Professor in Regulatory toxicology and ecotoxicology at the Department of environmental science and analytical chemistry, Stockholm University, in Sweden. Her research focuses on analyzing and evaluating the workings of the regulatory system for chemicals control, i.e., the chain of events from regulatory test requirements and (eco)toxicity testing, via risk assessment to risk management decision making. The overall purpose of this research is to contribute to developing scientifically well-motivated improvements of the legal system and its practices. Systematic studies of the actual workings of chemicals control have the potential to identify unwanted influences or outcomes of the process, and point to the need to ensure that the process is transparent and efficiently serve the purposes of risk management. Rudén has published more than 60 articles about regulatory toxicology in international peer-reviewed journals. She is a Member of the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) Management Board, and a member of the Swedish Chemicals Agency’s Supervisory Council. B5. Promote risk management within and outside the company

03:16
Selling risk management to key stakeholders is not simple. Risk managers need to learn to be proud of their contribution to the overall success of the company. Any positive results achieved by managing certain risks to a high standard should trigger the risk manager to share this success both internally and externally. This can be done by presenting at various conferences and industry events or publishing small articles in relevant magazines or web publications. Here is a list of places where we normally publish our work: • Official RISK-ACADEMY blog https://riskacademy.wordpress.com • G31000 LinkedIn discussion forum https://www.linkedin.com/groups/1834592 • Corporate Compliance Insights www.corporatecomplianceinsights.com • Continuity Central www.continuitycentral.com • CERM ® RISK INSIGHTS http://insights.cermacademy.com/ • Insurance Thought Leadership http://insurancethoughtleadership.com/ • Company newsletters • Company intranet portal • Company public website Sharing information about risk management will raise risk management awareness internally and reinforce trust and transparency with suppliers, contractors, key clients and regulators externally. Clearly this is only applicable to non-confidential, public information that does not include any trade secrets or other sensitive information. A number of the risk managers we have interviewed suggested that sharing information about risks and their mitigation with banks, investors, insurance companies and suppliers can result in significant cost savings on finance (lower cost of financing), insurance costs (lower premiums) and the cost of goods. Another good idea is to participate in annual risk management awards sessions, like the one organised by G31000 globally or by the Institute of Strategic Risk Analysis in Decision Making (ISAR) in Russia. The best idea, however, is to use risk management to help one or some of the executives achieve their objectives and KPIs and let them promote risk management internally and externally. Noting beats a powerful spokesman to drive the risk management integration message.
