Top 10 CONSPIRACY Theories About MEDICINE

14:30
These days, if you want information, it’s right at your fingertips. In some ways this has been a very good thing. But it’s also given rise to a platform for any insane idea, and for anyone who is trying to make a buck. With all this information so easily accessible, it’s made many of us feel like we’re experts after a little Googling. It doesn’t matter if we have little real familiarity with a subject. This has helped give rise to an industry of hucksters who decry mainstream medicine, touting instead their alternative cures that they will happily supply to you — for the right price. Unfortunately, these con routines have caused a lot of people to distrust mainstream medicine. This distrust has spawned all manner of bizarre conspiracy theories. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 → → GET A T-SHIRT - http://shop.spreadshirt.com/toptenz →Top 10 Objects That Were Clearly Invented Just to Annoy Physics: https://youtu.be/0MVGeRa-vLo →Simon's VLOG: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvqt8j7DfPmveJp3UOk9XTg Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! Artificial Intelligence Can Change the future of Medical Diagnosis | Shinjini Kundu | TEDxPittsburgh

12:22

But what if machine learning and artificial intelligence could help our doctors gain more knowledge from medical images and therefore predict diseases earlier? New research indicates this is indeed possible, and the implications for preventive medicine and several disease types are large. Learn about it in this talk. Shinjini graduated from high school at age 16, earned a PhD at 25, and was named one of Pittsburgh’s 40 under 40 in 2016. In her PhD work at Stanford, Shinjini employed machine learning that trained computers to detect patterns in medical images. That technology enables doctors to detect osteoarthritis three years before symptoms are evident. Shinjini is currently an MD-PhD scientist in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), a collaboration between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on medical diagnosis in the pre-disease stage when a patient is still asymptomatic. She is also an advocate for women and minorities in STEM professions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

What Is The Number One Killer In The United States And Has Been For 100 Years? by Kim Williams

12:11
The convergence of evidence suggests that an affordable plant-based diet can help prevent and even reverse some of the top killer diseases in the Western world, and can be even more effective than medication and surgery. This could save Medicare billions of dollars, but medical training continues to underemphasize nutrition education , in part, perhaps, because lifestyle interventions go against the prevailing conventional wisdom. The USDA, in formulating its dietary guidelines, has been accused of both acting with bias and ignoring relevant research. However, the most recent guidelines take a step in the right direction by recommending a shift to a plant-based diet, which Kaiser Permanente, the largest U.S. managed care organization, has moved in the direction of supporting. Lifestyle medicine attempts to find, prevent, and treat the causes of disease. Patients should receive fully informed consent for treatment, meaning they should be informed about all of their options including dietary changes. Doctors report they don’t practice preventative cardiology because they fear their patients won’t change their diet. Kim Allan Williams, MD, MACC, FAHA, MASNC, FESC was born in Chicago, and attended the College of The University of Chicago (1971 to 1975), followed by the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine (1975 to 1979), internal medicine residency at Emory University (1979 to 1982), and overlapping fellowships in Cardiology at the University of Chicago (1982 to 1985), Clinical Pharmacology (1984 to 1985), and Nuclear Medicine (1984 to 1986). He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Williams joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1986, specializing in clinical cardiology, nuclear medicine, and nuclear cardiology. He served as Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at The University of Chicago School of Medicine until 2010. Among numerous awards and honors for his teaching in the medical school, residencies and fellowships, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 2008. In 2010, he became the Dorothy Susan Timmis Endowed Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Chairman of the Division of Cardiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. At Wayne State, he has started the Urban Cardiology Initiative – a program of education of physicians on disparities in healthcare, primary school education on cardiovascular health and community health screening in inner-city Detroit. In November 2013 he returned to Chicago as the James B. Herrick Endowed Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Williams has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, monographs, book chapters, editorials, and review articles in the field of nuclear cardiology and minority health issues, with emphasis on education and innovations in perfusion imaging and quantitation of ventricular function. His research interests include selective adenosine receptor agonists, fluorinated perfusion PET imaging, cardiac computed tomography for plaque characterization, health care disparities and payment policy, and appropriate use of cardiac imaging. Dr. Williams has served on numerous committees and boards at the national level, including the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the Certifying Board of Nuclear Cardiology, the Certifying Board of Cardiac Computed Tomography, the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC). He served as President of ASNC from 2004 to 2005. He served as Chairman of the Board of ABC from 2008 to 2010. He also served on the Cardiovascular Disease Examination Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM-CV) until 2012. He served as the president of the ACC from 2015 to 2016. Dr. Wafik El-Deiry's interview with Philadelphia 6abc News 8-20-15 on President Carter's Diagnosis

02:23
Wafik El-Deiry, MD, PhD, FACP, American Cancer Society Professor, Professor of Medical Oncology and Deputy Director at Fox Chase Cancer Center was interviewed by 6abc Health News Reporter Ali Gorman at Fox Chase in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 8-20-15 regarding President Jimmy Carter's Diagnosis of metastatic melanoma that was removed from his liver and has also traveled to his brain in 4 different areas. The former President has not developed neurological symptoms and is in good spirits. He is 90 years old and being treated at Emory University in Atlanta. Mr. Carter has a family history of pancreatic cancer. He received his first treatment with Pembrolizumab (Kytruda) on 8-19-15 and was scheduled to receive his first dose of brain radiation on 8-20-15 at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Pemrolizumab is one of the new so called "Immune checkpoint therapies" that have shown impressive results in patients with melanoma and for Pembrolizumab this includes those patients with brain metastases. For recent articles in the literature related to results in melanoma see http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1503093 as well as recent data presented at the American Society for Clinical Oncology meeting in 2015 http://meetinglibrary.asco.org/content/146803-156 The most common side effects reported include fatigue, diarrhea and rash and these seem less severe when the treatment is given every 3 weeks instead of every two weeks according to the NEJM article. Immune checkpoint therapy represents one of the major advances in recent years in the field of oncology. The treatments offer patients with various tumor types a way to unleash the brakes on the immune system so that the body's own defenses attack the cancer. In 2015, elderly individuals with cancer are given chemotherapy and various targeted agents or medicines that boost the immune system to fight cancer. Elderly individuals are generally more susceptible to the side effects of toxic drugs and so therapy may require dose adjustments or delays depending on what is seen, in order to maintain quality of life. Melanoma frequently harbors mutations in the BRAF gene and even when metastatic to the brain can respond to a targeted therapy by vemurafenib. For literature references see http://www.ejcancer.com/article/S0959-8049(13)00979-9/abstract Melanoma with BRAF gene mutations responds well to combinations of BRAF and MEK inhibitors such as dabrafenib plus trametinib. It was not mentioned if it is presently known if Mr. Carter's tumor has a BRAF mutation. As such immunotherapy with Pembro is very reasonable and carries an acceptable toxicity profile. The Pembrolizumab is an intravenous therapy that should hopefully target any tumors that may not be visible by imaging. Additionally, while the targeted therapies that block the BRAF gene represent exciting advances with impressive response rates, sadly the responses are short-lived. There is much effort in the field to identify the mechanisms of resistance to these agents in order to have more treatment options for patients. Other treatments used for patients with melanoma and brain metastases include Temozolomide, other immune checkpoint inhibitors including combinations of immune checkpoint drugs and clinical trials. Based on available evidence in the New England Journal of Medicine article, Pembrolizumab has a more favorable toxicity profile than Ipilumumab. Regarding possible links between family history of pancreatic cancer and melanoma, the p16 (CDKN2A) locus was originally discovered and found to be mutated in familial melanoma and pancreatic cancer. See http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199602153340714 and http://www.nature.com/ejhg/journal/v19/n4/full/ejhg2010198a.html and http://www.nature.com/ng/journal/v8/n1/abs/ng0994-22.html and http://www.nature.com/ejhg/journal/v19/n4/full/ejhg2010198a.html and references therein. The prognosis of stage IV melanoma is generally poor https://twitter.com/weldeiry/status/634390869836201984 as is the finding of brain metastases. Hopefully the treatment Mr. Carter receives will impact on the progression of the small brain tumors and delay neurological symptoms. An important goal of therapy is to preserve neurological function while trying to avoid side effects https://www.yahoo.com/health/jimmy-carter-the-39th-president-of-the-united-127161776392.html?soc_src=mail&soc_trk=ma While the majority of patients with melanoma respond to immune checkpoint therapy, some don't and we still do not understand why that is. Much more research is needed in the current era of precision medicine in order to better understand why some patients respond and others do not. The hope is that in the future clinicians will be better able to tailor therapies towards the patients who are most likely to respond. Best wishes to former President Carter as he embarks on the therapy for the melanoma that has spread.

Robots have the potential to eliminate a great amount of monotonous work, provide assistance to human workers and serve in highly specialized environments, like hospitals or factories. At the same time, people can be concerned with how this technology will change daily life and worry about increasing isolation among humans or the loss of a job as a result. Even major names in technology development have showed signs of being spooked by robotics. In a talk given at a technology symposium held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk called robots the “biggest existential threat” to the human race, even arguing for national and international regulatory oversight on artificial (AI) development. Musk is even an investor in robotics, having put money into the AI development firm Vicarious, making his unease over the negative potential of robotics all the more telling. This holiday season, robots will likely have a much higher profile than they typically enjoy. Retail stores will prove to be a major testing ground for the consumer use of robotic technologies, as Lowe’s recently unveiled a lineup of robotic sales assistants, known as OSHbots, for certain stores. The robot can communicate in multiple languages and can direct customers to the exact location of an item they’re seeking in the store. Collision avoidance and autonomous navigation technologies are incorporated into these sales assistants, helping them travel across large stores safely. Robots have been here for a while but will likely be taking a much greater role in our daily lives. As we found in researching this technology, there are those who still believe that the utopian robotic future of The Jetsons is still very much within our grasp. In today’s article, we’ll look at some of the current activities in robotic development, break down some of the issues facing robotics technologies in our world and view some of the most recently issued patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect inventions in this field.
