Are private charter schools monopolizing public resources?
Charter school enrollment has soared from about 300,000 a little more than a decade ago to nearly 2 million students nationwide. But the expansion of charter schools, whose public funding is supplemented with private donations, has created serious competition for limited resources and space. Special correspondent John Tulenko of Learning Matters reports on the ongoing battle in New York.

How America's public schools keep kids in poverty | Kandice Sumner
Why should a good education be exclusive to rich kids? Schools in low-income neighborhoods across the US, specifically in communities of color, lack resources that are standard at wealthier schools -- things like musical instruments, new books, healthy school lunches and soccer fields -- and this has a real impact on the potential of students. Kandice Sumner sees the disparity every day in her classroom in Boston. In this inspiring talk, she asks us to face facts -- and change them. Launching Harmony Day online education resources
On Friday, 17 February I launched the new and interactive Harmony Day educational resources at Barnier Public School with Federal Member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland. The resources teach children about diversity, harmony and belonging. The lucky group of students were among the first in Australia to try out the new interactive whiteboard and online resources. Video Transcription Kate: I'm at Barnier Primary School with Michelle Rowland the Member for Greenway, and we've just launched this wonderful resource for schools for Harmony Day 2012, its called "Multicultural match-it". And the kids here have been having a wonderful time using their memories to play this great game. What do you think Michelle? Michelle: I think these are some of the smartest young people we've had in part of our school tours here. They're learning a lot about different costumes from around the world and different customs and I think everyone has done a fantastic job doing the Multicultural Match-it here today. We've had a really great time. Kate: So it's a game that can be played on both computers like this, or on the interactive whiteboards. The idea is you match up a piece of clothing from a different culture, but you've got to use your memory to find out where the other piece of clothing is. The children here have a wonderful time using their memories, using their brains and learning something about our wonderfully diverse culture here in Australia.

Why Are Classical Education Students Stomping the Competition?
Janet Mefferd Interviews Dr. Steve Turley about the exciting growth of classical Christian education. Patrick Henry College recently brought more honor to the exciting renewal of classical education nationwide. Not only has the small liberal arts school in Purcellville, Virginia, won nine of the last twelve American Moot Court Association National Championships, but PHC just received international accolades as the first place winner in the 2016 Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. As such, the debate team of rising juniors, William Bock and Helaina Hirsch, demonstrated the enduring legacy of the classical rhetoric tradition, even over the likes of Yale, Duke, and the University of Virginia. PHC’s achievements, though certainly impressive, are increasingly par for the course among classical schools. In secondary education, schools such as The Logos School and The Ambrose School, both in Idaho, have ranked as high as fifth in the nation in mock trial competition. The Logos School in particular has qualified for the national competition an astonishing 14 times. However, the recovery of rhetorical skill among classically educated students is about far more than the mere accumulation of competitive laurels. Dr. Steve Turley explains how the revival of classical education involves nothing less than the renaissance of Christian civilization. FREE resources! California Lottery - Imagine the Possibilities: Providing Education Resources for Students
Many people ask us “where does the money go?” Well, first of all, we should clarify that the California Lottery does not receive General Fund or taxpayer dollars. Everything we have, we raise from Lottery ticket sales. Most importantly, we’re proud to say that 95% of all funds actually go right back into the community in the form of prize payments, retailer commissions and bonuses and, of course, our contributions to education. Imagine the possibilities. Visit our website for more details: http://www.calottery.com/giving-back

We serve about 15,000 students from birth through eighth grade in five junior high schools, 21 elementary schools and one school with children from kindergarten through eighth grade and our new early learning center for children ages birth through five who are at-risk or have Individualized Education Plans. We opened the Early Learning Center in 2014 and approved a free, full-day kindergarten program at all of our elementary schools in 2015 to support our youngest learners. Research consistently demonstrates the academic and social-emotional benefits children receive from these programs. We also continue to focus on collaborative learning through Professional Learning Communities. PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous, job-embedded learning for educators. Our staff includes 1,288 certified teachers and other personnel who support the teachers, including mentors; instructional coaches in literacy, math, bilingual and technology; gifted instruction teachers; bilingual resource teachers and special education teachers at each school site. All of our resource teachers not only support the classroom teachers, but work directly with students during daily math and literacy acceleration blocks in every school. District 54 provides a measurable, standards-based curriculum that expands opportunities for engaged learning for all students. Whether in special education, general education or gifted classes, students are taught by highly trained teachers. All District 54 schools also practice PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). Teaching social behaviors creates a positive school climate and supports social-emotional learning and our focus on meeting the needs of the whole child. With these supports, student achievement continues to grow. District 54 is in the top 5 percent of all districts in Illinois, based on the PARCC assessment and the percentage of students who meet and exceed in both math and reading are nearly double the state average. We are able to provide our students with these supports due to our fiscal stability and responsibility. District 54 has had a balanced operating budget for more than 20 years and has been debt free since 2011. District 54 has earned a rating of Aaa, the highest, most prestigious rating from Moody’s Investors Service.
