China is a great power and a major regional power within Asia, and has been characterized as a potential superpower.[19][20] China emerged as one of the world's earliest civilizations in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. For millennia, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, or dynasties, beginning with the semi-legendary Xia dynasty. Since then, China has then expanded, fractured, and re-unified numerous times. In 1912, the Republic of China (ROC) replaced the last dynasty and ruled the Chinese mainland until 1949, when it was defeated by the communist People's Liberation Army in the Chinese Civil War. The Communist Party established the People's Republic of China in Beijing on 1 October 1949, while the ROC government retreated to Taiwan with its present de facto temporary capital in Taipei. Both the ROC and PRC continue to claim to be the legitimate government of all China, though the latter has more recognition in the world and controls more territory. Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China has become one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. As of 2016, it is the world's second-largest economy by nominal GDP and largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). China is also the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods.[21] China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army and second-largest defense budget.[22][23] The PRC is a member of the United Nations, as it replaced the ROC as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council in 1971. China is also a member of numerous formal and informal multilateral organizations, including the WTO, APEC, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the BCIM and the G-20. The English name "China" is first attested in Richard Eden's 1555 translation[j] of the 1516 journal of the Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa.[k][29] The demonym, that is, the name for the people, and adjectival form "Chinese" developed later on the model of Portuguese chinês and French chinois.[30][l] Portuguese China is thought to derive from Persian Chīn (چین), and perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit Cīna (चीन).[32] Cīna was first used in early Hindu scripture, including the Mahābhārata (5th century bce) and the Laws of Manu (2nd century bce).[33] The traditional theory, proposed in the 17th century by Martino Martini[34] and supported by many later scholars, is that the word "China" and its earlier related forms are ultimately derived from the state of Qin (秦, Old Chinese: *Dzin),[35] the westernmost of the Chinese states during the Zhou dynasty which unified China to form the Qin dynasty.[36] There are, however, other suggestions for the derivation of "China".[33] The official name of the modern state is the "People's Republic of China" (Chinese: 中华人民共和国; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó). The shorter form is "China" Zhōngguó (中国), from zhōng ("central" or "middle") and guó ("state, nation-state"),[24][m] a term which developed under the Zhou Dynasty in reference to its royal demesne.

The Senseless Ambiguity of North American Turn Signals

13:43
There are studies linked below that demonstrate a tangible safety benefit of amber turn signals. You might want to check them out. Though it might be small, the benefit is demonstrably there. This has always bugged me, and no one talks about it. Our automotive lighting regulations in North America are stupid when it comes to tail lights. This video is about what is stupid, why it’s stupid, and what we could do about it. Here are some studies showing that amber turn signals are indeed safer: The following NHTSA study found between a 3 and 28% decrease in liklihood of collision with amber turn signals, although it acknowledges that some of this may have been related to simply having a separate indicator for braking and turning and not explicitly the color; https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/811_037.pdf This study showed a significant descrease in reaction time to a brake signal when the vehicle is fitted with amber turn signals--partially explained by “Specifically, the subjects knew whether the red or the yellow turn signals were to be expected”. This suggests that the design should make clear even when the lights aren’t lit that there is a separate indicator for a turn signal. https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/64041/86955.pdf;sequence=1 And wouldn’t ya know it, the IIHS has done some research. It’s a shame they aren’t making a bigger fuss about this: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/sr/statusreport/article/44/8/3 You can support this channel on Patreon! How to write a good essay: Paraphrasing the question

14:39
Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

How to practice emotional first aid | Guy Winch

We'll go to the doctor when we feel flu-ish or a nagging pain. So why don’t we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness? He makes a compelling case to practice emotional hygiene — taking care of our emotions, our minds, with the same diligence we take care of our bodies.

William Mougayar: "Blockchains: Past, Present and Future" | Talks at Google

56:03
The Business Blockchain charts new territory in advancing our understanding of the blockchain by unpacking its elements like no other before. William Mougayar anticipates a future that consists of thousands, if not millions of blockchains that will enable not only frictionless value exchange, but also a new flow of value, redefining roles, relationships, power and governance. In this book, Mougayar makes two other strategic assertions. First, the blockchain has polymorphic characteristics; its application will result in a multiplicity of effects. Second, we shouldn’t ask ourselves what problems the blockchain solves, because that gives us a narrow view on its potential. Rather, we should imagine new opportunities, and tackle even more ambitious problems that cross organizational, regulatory and mental boundaries. Drawing on 34 years of technology industry experience as an executive, analyst, consultant, entrepreneur, startup mentor, author, blogger, educator, thought leader and investor, William Mougayar describes a future that is influenced by fundamental shifts brought by blockchain technology as the catalyst for change. William Mougayar has been described as the most sophisticated blockchain business thinker. He is a blockchain industry insider whose work has already shaped and influenced the understanding of blockchain for people around the world, via his generous blogging and rigorous research insights. He is a direct participant in the crypto-technology market, working alongside startups, entrepreneurs, pioneers, leaders, innovators, creators, enterprise executives and practitioners; in addition to being an investor, advisor, and board member in some of the leading organizations in this space, such as the Ethereum Foundation, OpenBazaar and Coin Center.

350 Million Reasons to Disrupt the Medical Device Industry | Craig Robertson | TEDxGlasgow

07:14
The medical device industry is overshadowed by huge companies which both stifle innovation and drain available resources. In the field of retinal imaging, there are just a handful of companies with revenues in the hundreds of millions of dollars but they make large and expensive devices that are inappropriate for the developing world. Dr Craig Robertson and his company, Epipole, make smart intelligent devices that address specific illnesses using robust, high quality but relatively inexpensive hardware and very intelligent cloud-based storage and computing. In his talk, Craig will look at what disruption means in the medical device industry. He’ll explore how we can make devices that fulfil the needs of the many, not the few, and make them at a price that allows for ethical trading. Dr. Craig Robertson is the founder of Epipole Ltd, a company which develops intellectual property in the domain of image, data and signal processing. His current project is a medical device which is particularly tuned to the detection of retinopathy. Craig’s background is in invention, mathematical problem solving and algorithm development. He invented 3D data acquisition systems, holds patents in the fields of optics, software and medical devices and has been a programmer for over 30 years. Craig has produced over thirty peer-reviewed papers, co-authored three books and produced many technical reports on subjects ranging from automated diagnosis to evolutionary optimisation and Open Source business integration. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Industrial Control Panel Basics

05:58
https://www.rspsupply.com/c-1618-enclosures.aspx What is a control panel and why do we use them? First let’s talk about the basic layout of a panel and why we locate items where we do. - Many different ways to layout a panel - Airflow - Safety - Field wiring, where do wires enter the panel? Let’s go over all the components in the panel and what their intended purpose is. - Enclosure and Backplate - Main Circuit Breaker - Branch Circuit Breaker - Surge Suppressor - Protects against lighting and power surge - AC Power distribution - Power Supply - Converts one form of power to another - DC Power Distribution - Ethernet Switch - It allows several different devices within the cabinet to communicate with one another - Radio - Industrial radio that is paired with a polyphaser (which protects the radio and internal panel hardware from lighting strikes) and an antenna ( to enable communication to other sites). Only used in cases where the panel cannot communicate locally via ethernet cable. - PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) - This is the brains of the operations. It sends and receives data from all the different inputs and outputs its connected to. It then interprets that data and communicates it into values that we can understand. - HMI (Human Machine Interface) - Allows us a way to view and interact with the data being collected by the PLC. Commonly mounted on the front of the panel. - IO - Analog vs Digital signals. Digital Inputs and Outputs - Relays - Why do we use relays for digital outs? Can be used for many other purposes. - Wire Duct and Dinrail

Zittrain and Zuckerberg discuss encryption, ‘information fiduciaries’ and targeted advertisements

01:43:02
Should Facebook be considered an “information fiduciary” when it comes to the privacy of its clients? How should we weigh the pros and cons of encryption schemes which might bolster privacy and data security at the risk of shutting out law enforcement? And why shouldn’t Facebook tell users how much advertising revenue their respective data generates on a daily basis? Those were some of the questions Facebook Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed with Jonathan Zittrain ’95, HLS’s George Bemis Professor of International Law, in a conversation among students at Harvard Law School on Feb. 11. The discussion was part of a series of study sessions for Harvard’s Techtopia initiative, a program for students across the University to explore problems in technology and governance, and it included participants from Zittrain’s course on Internet & Society: The Technologies and Politics of Control. Close your eyes and picture and engineer. You probably weren't envisioning Debbie Sterling. Debbie Sterling is an engineer and founder of GoldieBlox, a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. She has made it her mission in life to tackle the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math. GoldieBlox is a book series+construction set that engages kids to build through the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines. Debbie writes and illustrates Goldie's stories, taking inspiration from her grandmother, one of the first female cartoonists and creator of ""Mr. Magoo."" Her company, launched in 2012, raised over $285,000 in 30 days through Kickstarter, and has been featured in numerous publications such as The Atlantic and Forbes. Prior to founding GoldieBlox, Debbie served as the Marketing Director of Lori Bonn, a national jewelry company. For the past 7 years, she has also served as a brand strategy consultant for a wide variety of organizations including Microsoft, T-Mobile, Organic Valley and the New York Knicks. Debbie's inspiration to create a mission-driven company came in 2008, when she spent 6 months volunteering at a grassroots nonprofit in rural India. She created a viral fundraising campaign called ""I Want a Goat,"" raising over $30,000 for economic and educational development in the region. This experience helped pave the way to finding her true passion: inspiring the next generation of female engineers. Debbie completed her degree in engineering at Stanford (Product Design, '05) and currently lives with her husband in San Francisco. Ryan Calo – Glass to Gengar: Hard Problems in Augmented Reality Law

28:11
In 2015, the University of Washington Tech Policy Lab released a primer on the technical and policy challenges likely to arise from augmented reality. The Lab took a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach and specifically vetted our work product with diverse, non-mainstream stakeholders. We stand by our analysis and believe it provides a roadmap for policymakers of all kinds to think through the interaction between AR and law. Nevertheless, we failed to anticipate a range of issues presented by the very first blockbuster AR application—Pokémon Go. This talk details the Lab’s findings about AR and remarks upon the promises and perils of technology policy research. Bio: Ryan Calo is an assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Law. He is a faculty co-director (with Batya Friedman and Tadayoshi Kohno) of the University of Washington Tech Policy Lab, a unique, interdisciplinary research unit that spans the School of Law, Information School, and Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Professor Calo holds courtesy appointments at the University of Washington Information School and the Oregon State University School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering

Global Media Industries Speaker Series - Eric Dienstfrey

01:10:54
The Time the Telephone Company Broke the Talkies In the 1930s, the newly formed Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences did something puzzling. It implemented an industry-wide technical standard—nicknamed “Academy Mono”—that dramatically impaired the sound quality for all talking pictures. Why exactly industry leaders thought such impairments were a good idea remains unclear. At the time, the Academy claimed that its standard would correct the problems with sub-par sound systems, and thereby improve the reproduction of films in smaller theaters. My presentation, however, provides a different explanation. Drawing upon studio contracts, court filings, FCC reports, and the surviving correspondence of audio engineers, I argue that studios adopted the technical standard in order to kneecap the Hollywood office of AT&T. In the years leading up to Academy Mono’s creation, the telephone company had been widely accused of “throttling” films and extorting exhibitors into installing AT&T-licensed loudspeakers. The solution to this power grab was to implement acoustical restrictions that undercut AT&T’s equipment advantages and weakened the company’s stranglehold on the industry. This presentation, in turn, reconsiders the value of technical standards within media industries. Contrary to scholarship that sees standardization as a means to bolster cooperation and efficiency, I contend that industry leaders exploit technical regulations in order to restrict competition, consolidate power, and maximize profits. In other words, standards are designed to benefit those in power, often at the expense of aesthetic quality and intra-industry cooperation. Bio: Eric Dienstfrey is a Postdoctoral Fellow in American Music at the University of Texas at Austin. His research on media sound technology has been published in Film History, Music and the Moving Image, and the Journal for Cinema and Media Studies (forthcoming). His article “The Myth of the Speakers: A Reexamination of Dolby History” received the 2017 Katherine Singer Kovács Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
Price Ceilings and Floors- Economics 2.6

In this video I explain what happens when the government controls market prices. Price ceilings are a legal maximum price and price floors are a minimum legal price. Make sure that you can draw each of them on a demand and supply graph and identify if there is a shortage or a surplus. Keep in mind that your teacher may use the word "binding" to describe the situation where the price control has an effect on the market. Biomimicry: Business Innovations Inspired by Nature: Jakki Mohr at TEDxBozeman

12:57
Biomimicry--a tool for creativity and innovation--has the potential to transform business practices to be in harmony with nature.  Professor Jakki Mohr, Regents Professor of the University of Montana, provides many examples of how biomimicry is used to develop technological innovations, including:  Qualcomm's mirasol display technology, creating vibrant color based on the butterfly wing; Swedish Biomimetics 3000 uMist technology for industrial sprays without VOCs based on the bombardier beetle; Greenshield Technology's waterproof fabric finish based on the lotus leaf, and Ornilux Birdsafe Glass based on UV reflective strands in spider webs.  Her research and projects with companies commercializing biomimetic inventions and infusing biomimicry into their innovation processes provides insights for success.  Interface Flor, with its line of Entropy carpet tiles, is a shining success story in the world of biomimicry, based on not only its use of biomimicry in product innovation (patterned after the forest floor), but also in its infusion of sustainability through-out the company. Jakki Mohr, Ph.D., is the Regents Professor of Marketing and the Jeff & Martha Hamilton Distinguished Faculty Fellow at the University of Montana-Missoula. She is an international expert on the marketing of technology and innovation, and the co-author of a book on that topic. Motivated by the desire to bring the promise of new technologies to solve social and global problems, she has worked with companies and universities worldwide in strategic market planning to commercialize innovation. Her most recent interest is the field of biomimicry. Funded by the Marketing Science Institute out of Boston, she is studying how companies can successfully use nature-inspired designs to solve technical and engineering challenges. "http://euroncap.com/results/escperf.aspx Euro NCAP carried out sine-with-dwell tests according to the ESC GTR global technical regulation, which is based on the US regulation FMVSS126. The testwere completed on all cars whose results were released in 2009. For cars that allowed the ESC system to be switched off, tests were carried out with ESC ON and OFF. Cars were tested by undergoing multiple runs, sometimes as much as 60 per car, each time increasing the steering angle and input. The clip shows the first ESC off test where the car span out. The ESC on test is the one with the same steering input."
