Their name comes from the fact that early hedge funds (and some current ones) tried to "hedge" their exposure to the market (so they could, in theory, do well in an "up" or "down" market as long as they were good at picking the good companies). Today, hedge funds represent a huge class investment funds. They are far less regulated than, say, mutual funds. In exchange for this, they aren't allowed to market or take investments from "unsophisticated" investors. Some use their flexibility to mitigate risk, other use it to amplify it. Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. Special thanks to Dave Hunt for permission to use his PiPhone video. this guy really did make an artisanal smartphone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eaiNsFhtI8 Crash Course is on Patreon! "Untouched" private funds being seized by government

01:56
The government of Australia has seized more than 360 million dollars sitting in bank accounts and safe deposit boxes around the nation. In the United States, governments in all 50 states are also looking at changing laws, making it easier for them to seize private funds. If accounts or safe deposit boxes are not used for a certain period of time, any funds or property contained in them becomes property of the state government. In most states, that waiting period used to be seven years. Most states don't check to see if the holder is still alive, or if they have other active accounts at the bank before seizing funds. Even if a customer has an active checking account at a financial institution, not touching a safe-deposit box for a time can trigger a seizure. This lack of diligence in identifying owners appears to be a conscious decision by agencies to seize more funds. A lawyer for the California Bureau of Unclaimed Property wrote in an internal memo, "[Searching for rightful owners] could well result in additional claims of monies that would otherwise flow into the general fund." (1) In Australia, the national government in Cabrerra has already taken possession of more than 360 million dollars. Billions of dollars in cash is being taken on a regular basis from bank accounts. Other valuables, including stocks, bonds and other precious items are being taken from safe deposit boxes. Many of these confiscations are the result of shortening waiting periods before property is considered abandoned. Limits that once stood at seven to 15 years are now being shortened to as little as 12 months. Georgia is one of the states that has adopted the one-year benchmark. The state of Wisconsin has recently started selling unclaimed property through an online auction. Americans used to be advised to put money into a savings account and forget about it. Now, it seems following that advice could be a road to financial ruin. Support Indymedia! Hedge Funds vs Mutual Funds - Difference between Traditional Funds and Hedge Funds 🙋

05:52
Hedge Funds versus Mutual Funds. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/technical-analysis.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! What is the difference between traditional funds and hedge funds? Are these the same or different? Both hedge funds and mutual funds are managed by a portfolio fund manager. Hedge funds are managed actively by a hedge fund manager who will decide where to allocate capital and different trading ideas. A hedge fund can go long or short - they have multiple different ways to express an idea so they have more flexibility. You can't really put a very small amount with a hedge fund - there are barriers to entry. Performance remuneration is very much performance based - typically 2% management fee, 20% performance fee. Some of these hedge funds are quite high risk... Mutual funds are much more geared towards picking assets that will increase in value in the long term. Mutual funds are very regulated and limited to what they can charge and the fee structure is made very clear. Warren Buffett - How Anyone can Invest and Become Rich

Website: https://primedlifestyle.com/ Instagram: Primed Berkshire Hathaway Annual report: http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/2013ltr.pdf Warren Buffett's favorite book -The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2AlojQc Tony Robbins Money Master the Game on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2zyz84n Audible 30 day free trail: https://goo.gl/x64Vb9 Warren Buffett - One of the most successful investor of all times with an estimated net worth of over 80 billion dollars to this date has shared his methods for investing. Having bought his first stock at 11 years of age and having $53,000 dollars to his name at 17, he sure knows a thing or two about this market. And even though he spent a lifetime developing his skills, he’s has shared some very straightforward advice about investing that anyone can take advantage of. Warren Buffett’s first rule is to simply think long term over short term. He might be going overboard with this concept and he is truly embracing it around his entire life. He still lives in the same house he bought in 1958 and is also working at the very same desk since 50 years back and doesn’t use a computer but traditional pen and paper. He’s been quoted saying he doesn’t throw anything away until he’s had it for at least 20-25 years. So thinking long term is natural for him and the ability to resist selling has proved to be very successful for him. So having that said the reason why he’s holding on to what he buys is because he does his homework and does so very well. He’s stated many times that he spends 80 % of his day reading and catching up with the latest news and what companies to invest in. He thinks about life and investing as learning as much as he can and reads between 600-1,000 pages every single day. However not many people have the time or money to read for 8 hours a day and invest a few billions in the biggest companies like Warren Buffet, and it’s not a strategy that anyone can apply and find success with. And I wanted to make a video explaining how absolutely anyone can invest and become rich without taking time to read and grasp what to invest in which is why I’m super excited to share this with you. So when reading the Berkshire Hathaway Annual report of 2013, one of the most interesting paragraphs I found was on page 20 where he gave a very simple and straightforward advice about investing. He says “My money is where my mouth is: What I advise here is essentially identical to certain instructions I’ve laid out in my will. So in his will he’s demanded that future of his family's money money should be invested such as this: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund.” And he finishes it off by stating “I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors” I told you it was straight forward. Don’t try to outplay the market but instead play with it. No man or machine can predict the ups and downs of the market, well except for Warren Buffett, so it would be foolish to try to beat it when you can simply join it. The very same formula was also mentioned in Tony Robbins book money master the game and index funds really seems to be the future of investments because the market will always rise in long term, and that’s essentially what you invest in - the market. The S&P 500 contains all the 500 largest companies that trade on NYSE and Nasdaq. Instead of picking stocks individually, you can now own a piece of all of the biggest companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Google. And investing in an index fund is very secure since a single company might go bankrupt, however the market will not. And you don’t have to stick to only the U.S market but could invest in the european and asian markets that’s also doing very well and you can even invest in global index funds to own a part of the biggest companies in the world. And for the other 10 %, the short-term government bonds is a very low risk low cost alternative that is also offered by vanguard amongst others. Short-term bonds are very attractive to investors because of they’re very stable and consistently rising, however the return tends to be smaller. And I’ll finish it off through Warren Buffett’s words: “The goal of the non-professional should not be to pick winners but should rather be to own a cross-section of businesses that in aggregate are bound to do well.” Music: Life of Riley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400054 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

What is an IPO? And Why Do Companies Like Uber go Public?

04:56
An IPO is an initial public offering – or the first time a company makes shares available to the public for purchase. If you’re running a business, you have a couple different ways to raise money: You can take on debt — where you borrow an amount of money and pay it back over time in installments… plus interest. This can take the form of a loan from a bank, or debt the company issues itself. OR you can issue equity — when you do this, you’re making ownership of your company available, and in exchange for that ownership, the new shareholders pay some amount of money. You don’t have to make any interest payments, but you have to share ownership of your company. Now companies can issue equity privately, and often this is how early stage companies raise funds, meaning that they are making a deal with investment firms or angel investors to exchange some percentage ownership of their company for some large chunk of money. If you’ve ever watched Shark Tank, you’ve seen this at play. Raising money privately is helpful early on – the company doesn’t have to publicly disclose as much information and management doesn’t have to worry about market noise. But that shield comes at a cost – it’s a lot harder for people who hold shares in private companies to turn their shares into cash. Because of this, eventually many large businesses will reach a point where they want to “go public” and list shares on an exchange where they can easily be traded. If that’s the case, the company will go through an IPO. That means the company will work with an investment bank like Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan. These banks will “underwrite” the IPO, meaning that they will determine a valuation for the company, buy the shares from the company at a set price, then distribute them and help the company file with the Securities and Exchange Commission and get listed on exchange like the New York Stock Exchange. IPOs get a lot of buzz, but often its better to stay on the sidelines as an investor. Because IPOs are the public’s first chance to buy into a company, there is often a lot of pent up demand to buy shares when they first become available. This leads to a lot of funky price movements, because the value is being dictated by the short-term spike in demand, not business results which actually drive stock prices over time. Also, an important thing to remember – most of the time the company is choosing when it is going public… so they’re going to do it at a time when it is advantageous for them to do so. Think about it, if you were going to sell a portion of a business you ran, you’d want to get the most you could for it, right? So you’d probably do it when business results looked really strong. The same logic applies to IPOs – at their core, IPOs have a couple major players, and their incentives are all aligned: The business – The money from the business selling shares to the investment banks goes directly to the company, giving them cash to work with, so the company wants to raise as much as it can. You’ll often hear IPOs called a “capital raising” event. The investment bank – The investment bank has bought shares from the company and is usually selling them to big clients and high net worth individuals. The investment bank wants to make sure it can sell what it bought, and wants its valuable clients to be able to make money on the shares so that they stay happy. So they want the shares to price high and gain value short-term. Early investors – Most private companies have early investors, venture capitalists, big investment firms, and angel investors. These folks have had their money tied up in the private company for a while and often are ready to sell their stake and make a return on their investment. For them, IPOs are an “exit opportunity” Founders and employees of the company -- Founders and early employees of companies that go public often have a lot of their personal wealth tied up into the business through shares they’ve accumulated. For these folks, IPOs are a “liquidity event” , meaning they give people the chance to convert stock into cash. All of these people generally want to maximize the value of the business around the time it IPOs – it means the company raises as much money as it can, and it means people “exiting” their investments are getting top dollar for the shares they’re selling. There’s nothing wrong with that, but those incentives, on top of overwhelming market demand, can often cause shares to spike, then fall after an IPO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

Defined Contribution in a Private Exchange

03:15
Is Defined Contribution the Next Trend in Health Insurance in Utah? Watch this video and read Regence's new white paper (http://bit.ly/1ms16ik), Defined Contribution: A familiar model, redefined for health care that examines how private exchanges are becoming an increasingly attractive option for employers and employees alike. 20 years ago, employers led a shift in financial retirement benefits from traditional pensions to defined contribution 401K plans. Now health care coverage is following suit. Studies estimate as many as 80 million people will receive their insurance through private exchanges by 2018. This option is attractive for a number of reasons: • Employers can more easily control costs and forecast benefits expenses by allocating a set amount of money to each employee to shop for health insurance • Employees can choose from a variety of plans that best fit their unique needs via an online private exchange • This mix of choice and cost containment allows employers to attract and retain top talent, while providing more financial certainty amidst the evolving Affordable Care Act health marketplace Regence is excited to announce the launch of Regence Marketplace, our single-carrier private health insurance exchange that supports defined contribution - available to mid and large sized businesses in Utah. For more information, please contact your Producer or Regence sales Executive at 1-888-REGENCE.
