Using Simscape Power Systems to Simulate Microgrids - Microgrid Development and Analysis, Part 3

In this third video on microgrids, the modeling and simulation of power systems in MATLAB® and Simulink® is introduced with Simscape Power Systems™. See how Simscape Power Systems can be used to schematically represent a one-line microgrid diagram using blocks that represent different distributed energy resources (DERs). The DERs in this example include renewables, such as solar, a diesel GenSet, and an energy storage system (ESS). Using the simple microgrid that is built in this video, you see how desktop simulation can be used to subject the distribution system with residential load changes or unintentional islanding of the microgrid. Load flow analysis in Simscape Power Systems is also introduced. Since microgrid systems commonly have inverter-based controls for solar and ESS, different levels of simulation fidelity can be useful to study the microgrid operation. Simscape Power Systems can be used to simulate Phasor or Electromagnetic Transients (EMT). Depending on the requirements of the simulation study, Phasor, EMT, or a combination of both can be used. An example of a segmented IEEE 123 node network is introduced that illustrates a hybrid Phasor-EMT simulation. In addition to desktop simulation for analysis, you learn how the same desktop simulations can be transferred to a real-time platform for hardware-in-the-loop simulation. This example uses Simulink Real-Time™ and a Speedgoat real-time machine. You can create and simulate systems using either library. A single Simscape Power Systems model can contain components from both libraries. You use electrical ports to connect the components within each technology and, ultimately, use Simulink signals to connect Simscape Components blocks to Specialized Technology blocks. Simscape Components libraries use the full range of Simscape technology, and the component models are written in the Simscape language. You can directly connect these models with the Simscape Foundation library components and with components from other add-on products. You can view and customize the Simscape language source code examples for machines and transformers. Simscape Components models are fully compatible with Simscape technology, including local solver and data logging. Simscape Components also provides three-phase electrical connection ports, which you can individually expand into separate phases as needed. By default, these three-phase ports are collapsed, to support single-line diagrams. Specialized Technology libraries provide components and technology specifically developed for electrical power systems. The Specialized Technology library has been refined and tuned for more than a decade. Specialized Technology models use their own electrical domain. You connect Specialized Technology blocks to other Simscape elements ultimately through Simulink signals. The Specialized Technology software provides various simulation methods (continuous, discrete, phasor) and analysis tools.

Optimal Placement of DG Units Considering Power Losses Minimization and Voltage Stability

Nowadays, increasing the numbers of DG units has affected the system parameters like stability and power losses. Controlling these parameters makes the power system operators optimize the placement and penetration level of these sources. Consequently, several methods with various targets have been studied until now. In this project, the evaluation of placement and penetration level of DG units considering stability improvement and power losses reduction has been investigated. To achieve these goals, different objective functions with several operating constraints were proposed. The well-known NSGA_II was utilized to optimize the objective functions considering the operating constraints. NSGA_II is an evolutionary based multi-objective optimization tools which has great advantages in comparison with other evolutionary algorithms. The utilized method was applied to IEEE 14 -bus and 57 -bus test systems. The ability of the proposed method in enhancing of voltage stability, improvement of voltage profile, and reduction of power losses were confirmed using simulation results.
