Reimagining Classrooms: Teachers as Learners and Students as Leaders | Kayla Delzer | TEDxFargo

13:01
Why do some classrooms look the same now as they did 70 years ago? In this passionate talk, second grade teacher Kayla Delzer speaks about her mission to revitalize learning and the classroom environment. Kayla explains how to release the power in the classroom by giving students ownership of their learning and making it relevant to them. Breaking down the four walls of the classroom allows her students to become globally connected - and you won’t believe the endeavors her students conquer by embracing purposeful technology. Kayla Delzer is a 2nd grade teacher and Project Lead the Way Lead Teacher in West Fargo, North Dakota. In August, she will begin her 8th year of teaching 2nd grade and her second year with West Fargo Public Schools (WFPS). Teaching is her true passion in life, and she enjoys her job and helping children to love learning and become creative problem solvers. Her students are her focus in life; they are like family to her. In August 2014, she completed her master’s degree in Elementary Education. She also serves on the Technology Task Force and Social Media Task Force for WFPS. Her classroom Twitter account, @tweetingtopdogs, has allowed her students to learn virtually with hundreds of classrooms and educational experts from all over the world. Kayla has teamed up with several companies to improve the lives of students and teachers, and she works frequently with GoNoodle and Remind. She is highly sought after by educational and technology companies to preview and review their products. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Developing Language Teaching Materials: Using Pictures (Unit 5-A)

04:52
Before you watch, think about this question: This unit looks at materials that do not contain language themselves (like written or spoken texts) but that stimulate language production. That language may be hard to predict. How do you feel about that unpredictability in a language classroom? After you watch, go to the CARLA website for additional information: http://www.carla.umn.edu/lctl/development/mod5a.html ------------------------------------ The Developing Materials for Less Commonly Taught Languages website features videos of leading language teacher educator Bill Johnston presenting concepts for material development from a variety of resources. The videos also show pairs of LCTL teachers as they work through example activities using the materials as if they were students and then discuss the activities from the teacher viewpoint. Each video is accompanied by questions to think about before watching, and additional questions for reflection after watching.

There have been some pretty amazing pictures from the island of Hawaii. A volcano there, named Kilauea, has been erupting and spewing out rivers of lava which have destroyed homes and cars. It's pretty scary stuff from a distance, so imagine what it's like for the people who live there. We caught up with some Hawaiian locals and found out more about their fiery mountain. Creating classrooms that work: Esther Wojcicki at TEDxBeaconStreet

13:48
In this heartfelt TEDxBeaconStreet talk, education innovator Esther Wojcicki shares the simple but powerful formula she used to raise three highly successful children and to build one of the most dynamic and successful high school media studies programs in the U.S. Her method (TRICK) frees teachers to be learning resources, not just lecturers; engages students and empowers them to teach themselves and each other; and accelerates learning-by-doing in a collaborative, hands-on environment that mirrors the real world of contemporary media. Esther Wojcicki has built the journalism program at Palo Alto (CA) High School from one class of 20 students in 1984 to one of the largest in the nation: 500 students, five teachers, and ten award-winning student-produced publications. She has served as an executive or board member of several organizations, including Creative Commons and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Weathering and Erosion: Crash Course Kids #10.2

04:06
In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina gives us a real world example of how the Hydrosphere and Geosphere affect each other in the form of Weathering and Erosion. Think of Weathering as the force that makes a mess and Erosion as the force that cleans it up. This first series is based on 5th grade science. We're super excited and hope you enjoy Crash Course Kids! ///Standards Used in This Video/// 5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact. [Clarification Statement: Examples could include the influence of the ocean on ecosystems, landform shape, and climate; the influence of the atmosphere on landforms and ecosystems through weather and climate; and the influence of mountain ranges on winds and clouds in the atmosphere. The geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere are each a system.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to the interactions of two systems at a time.] Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet? Fractions on a Number Line Song | 3rd Grade & 4th Grade

03:21
🍎 Enjoy our growing library of math videos at https://www.numberock.com 🍎 Q. Why do we learn about fractions on a number line? A. When we represent fractions on a number line, we can see in a visual way the size of a given fraction vs. another fraction, allowing us to deepen our understanding of the values that fractions represent. Number lines can also help us see how 1/4 is equal to 2/8, for example, by allowing us to see logical proof of how 2 intervals of 1/8th are the same as 1 interval of 1/4. As students expand their understanding of values beyond whole numbers, they can broaden their relationships to real world concepts of things like money, time and the mechanics of equitable sharing. Number lines as they relate to fractions can can act as an effective model to help students meaningfully understand what is happening in their environment when dealing with those real world concepts. Q. What grade levels does our Fractions on a Number Line Song target? A. 3rd Grade - 4th Grade Q. Where did you guys come from? A. Numberock is a project that I, Mr. Hehn, began as a 5th Grade math teacher of 7 years. It came together after years of experimenting with my lessons trying to figure out the best way to help my students retain the math concepts they were learning. Q. Does Numberock drive real results in the classroom? A. I knew I found the secret sauce when not only were my students retaining the concepts longer, they were singing the songs outside of the classroom during recess and at home with their parents during dinnertime. The songs were so catchy, my students couldn't get the math songs out of their head! During testing, I often found my students humming the melodies in order to jostle their memory of a rule or problem solving process. As we've all experienced, there is something about the power of music that allows us to retain information easier and for longer periods of time. Without getting into the finer details of multi-sensory learning and how it often helps the students who most need the help, the power of a catchy song is hard to deny. Q. I love these math songs. Where can I experience more of what NUMBEROCK has to offer? We have additional teaching resources that are always expanding over at https://www.numberock.com. For the low price of $4.95/month, premium members gain access to video-aligned activities like worksheets, printable posters/anchor charts, task cards, self-graded assessments, games, and more. Coming Soon: 1. Self-Graded Assessments | These will soon be available for every Common Core and TEKS standard from 2nd-6th Grade so you'll be able to track and monitor student progress while your students complete standards-aligned quizzes that are integrated with the NUMBEROCK video they just watched. 2. Number Notes | Were currently working on creating exercises where students will be able to take notes artistically on printable templates featuring characters from the videos. Research has shown that this will help to integrate their artistic side side of the student's brain with the mathematical side of their brain which helps with long-term memory retention. Our own research has shown us that teacher's who use start using these templates love them! It seems to be a natural fit as we move beyond our unique auditory learning tools into visual learning tools, that when used in concert, cater to the different types of learners that you teach everyday. Hope to see you at https://numberock.com! This video addresses the following Common Core Standards and TEKS Standards : Aligned with Common Core Standards 3.NF.A.2 | 3.NF.2 Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram. 3.NF.A.2a | 3.NF.2a Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line. 3.NF.A.2.b | 3.NF.2b Represent a fraction a/b on a number line diagram by marking off a lengths 1/b from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size a/b and that its endpoint locates the number a/b on the number line. Aligned with TEKS Standards:: 3.3A The student is expected to represent fractions greater than zero and less than or equal to one with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using concrete objects and pictorial models, including strip diagrams and number lines. 3.3B The student is expected to determine the corresponding fraction greater than zero and less than or equal to one with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 given a specified point on a number line. 3.7A The student is expected to represent fractions of halves, fourths, and eighths as distances from zero on a number line.
