The terms Nondestructive examination (NDE), Nondestructive inspection (NDI), and Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are also commonly used to describe this technology. Industry has an ongoing need for these technologies and techniques that can accurately locate, quantify, characterise and size flaws in a wide variety of materials, components and structures, and TWI has an undoubted and proven track record in the research, development and application of NDT and supporting technologies. With every technology in use, industry has a responsibility to employ trained, competent and qualified staff to operate NDT technologies in order to use them safely and accurately. In many industrial sectors qualification and recognised certification is enforced by law or by the associated applied codes and standards. Recognising this, and using its expertise in having driven major developments within the NDT field, TWI has been best placed to design and develop its comprehensive programme of related NDT training, covering Conventional NDT courses and Advanced NDT courses. TWI runs an NDT training programme designed to introduce newcomers to the most commonly used means of non-destructive testing. TWI has been at the forefront of inspection and non-destructive testing (NDT) of fabricated structures for more than 40 years. The NDT Technology Section is a multi-disciplinary group of over 60 engineers, consultants and technicians dedicated to the development and successful implementation of the full spectrum of NDT technologies.

A Non Destructive Test (NDT) is a way of testing a structural element without causing any destruction, there are two types of tests, 1) Destructive Test 2) Non Destructive Test Destructive Test is done before casting concrete or construction material onto the site, for example Compression Test of Concrete Cubes, i have explained in detail how to operate compression testing machine in my one of the videos, the link for that video is https://youtu.be/QR7ttm5tr4o Non Destructive Test is a test performed on the structure without causing any harm to the structure. One of the primary method is Rebound Hammer Test. Rebound hammer is a instrument which gives us the relative compressive strength of concrete based on the hardness of its exposed surface. It was invented by Swiss Engineer Ernst Schmidt, it is also known as Schmidt's Hammer or Swiss Hammer. IS:13311 (Part 2)-1992, BS 6089-81 explains the standard rebound hammer test procedure. Nondestructive testing (NDT) is the process of inspecting, testing, or evaluating materials, components or assemblies for discontinuities, or differences in characteristics without destroying the serviceability of the part or system. In other words, when the inspection or test is completed the part can still be used. In contrast to NDT, other tests are destructive in nature and are therefore done on a limited number of samples ("lot sampling"), rather than on the materials, components or assemblies actually being put into service. These destructive tests are often used to determine the physical properties of materials such as impact resistance, ductility, yield and ultimate tensile strength, fracture toughness and fatigue strength, but discontinuities and differences in material characteristics are more effectively found by NDT. Today modern nondestructive tests are used in manufacturing, fabrication and in-service inspections to ensure product integrity and reliability, to control manufacturing processes, lower production costs and to maintain a uniform quality level. During construction, NDT is used to ensure the quality of materials and joining processes during the fabrication and erection phases, and in-service NDT inspections are used to ensure that the products in use continue to have the integrity necessary to ensure their usefulness and the safety of the public. It should be noted that while the medical field uses many of the same processes, the term "nondestructive testing" is generally not used to describe medical applications. NDT Test Methods Test method names often refer to the type of penetrating medium or the equipment used to perform that test. Current NDT methods are: Acoustic Emission Testing (AE), Electromagnetic Testing (ET), Guided Wave Testing (GW), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Laser Testing Methods (LM), Leak Testing (LT), Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), Microwave Testing, Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Neutron Radiographic Testing (NR), Radiographic Testing (RT), Thermal/Infrared Testing (IR), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Vibration Analysis (VA) and Visual Testing (VT). Typical defects are voids, delaminations, disbands, foreign material and debris, core crush, impact damage and lighting strikes among others. Thermal or Infrared Non-Destructive Testing is an alternative method to performing Ultrasound NDT. IR-NDT is faster, since it allows for large area inspection of defects using a thermal camera. In our solutions we are using FLIR Infrared cameras in combination with our non-destructive test system. The two most commonly used excitation sources for infrared non-destructive testing are either halogen lamps or Xenon flash lamps. Flash lamps are used for Flash or Pulse Thermography and Halogen lamps are used for Transient Thermography. Flash Thermography in composite materials is good for surface and surface near defects to about 2mm in depth. For defects located deeper than that, we recommend using halogen excitation with a Transient Thermography setup. The six most frequently used NDT methods are eddy-current, magnetic-particle, liquid penetrant, radiographic, ultrasonic, and visual testing.[3] NDT is commonly used in forensic engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, systems engineering, aeronautical engineering, medicine, and art.[1] Innovations in the field of nondestructive testing have had a profound impact on medical imaging, including on echocardiography, medical ultrasonography, and digital radiography. With the advent of machine learning, computer vision and data-driven techniques, nondestructive testing have been improved in different fields. [4] applied data-driven and machine learning techniques to predict damage state based solely on visual observations in infrastructures. Various national and international trade associations exist to promote the industry, knowledge about non-destructive testing, and to develop standard methods and training. These include the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, the Non-Destructive Testing Management Association, the International Committee for Non-Destructive Testing, the European Federation for Non-Destructive Testing and the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing. NDT methods rely upon use of electromagnetic radiation, sound and other signal conversions to examine a wide variety of articles (metallic and non-metallic, food-product, artifacts and antiquities, infrastructure) for integrity, composition, or condition with no alteration of the article undergoing examination. Visual inspection (VT), the most commonly applied NDT method, is quite often enhanced by the use of magnification, borescopes, cameras, or other optical arrangements for direct or remote viewing. The internal structure of a sample can be examined for a volumetric inspection with penetrating radiation (RT), such as X-rays, neutrons or gamma radiation. Sound waves are utilized in the case of ultrasonic testing (UT), another volumetric NDT method – the mechanical signal (sound) being reflected by conditions in the test article and evaluated for amplitude and distance from the search unit (transducer). Another commonly used NDT method used on ferrous materials involves the application of fine iron particles (either suspended in liquid or dry powder – fluorescent or colored) that are applied to a part while it is magnetized, either continually or residually. The particles will be attracted to leakage fields of magnetism on or in the test object, and form indications (particle collection) on the object's surface, which are evaluated visually. Contrast and probability of detection for a visual examination by the unaided eye is often enhanced by using liquids to penetrate the test article surface, allowing for visualization of flaws or other surface conditions. This method (liquid penetrant testing) (PT) involves using dyes, fluorescent or colored (typically red), suspended in fluids and is used for non-magnetic materials, usually metals. Analyzing and documenting a nondestructive failure mode can also be accomplished using a high-speed camera recording continuously (movie-loop) until the failure is detected. Detecting the failure can be accomplished using a sound detector or stress gauge which produces a signal to trigger the high-speed camera. These high-speed cameras have advanced recording modes to capture some non-destructive failures.[5] After the failure the high-speed camera will stop recording.
