Hi. In this video, we will apply neural networks for text. And let's first remember, what is text? You can think of it as a sequence of characters, words or anything else. And in this video, we will continue to think of text as a sequence of words or tokens. And let's remember how bag of words works. You have every word and forever distinct word that you have in your dataset, you have a feature column. And you actually effectively vectorizing each word with one-hot-encoded vector that is a huge vector of zeros that has only one non-zero value which is in the column corresponding to that particular word. So in this example, we have very, good, and movie, and all of them are vectorized independently. And in this setting, you actually for real world problems, you have like hundreds of thousands of columns. And how do we get to bag of words representation? You can actually see that we can sum up all those values, all those vectors, and we come up with a bag of words vectorization that now corresponds to very, good, movie. And so, it could be good to think about bag of words representation as a sum of sparse one-hot-encoded vectors corresponding to each particular word. Okay, let's move to neural network way. And opposite to the sparse way that we've seen in bag of words, in neural networks, we usually like dense representation. And that means that we can replace each word by a dense vector that is much shorter. It can have 300 values, and now it has any real valued items in those vectors. And an example of such vectors is word2vec embeddings, that are pretrained embeddings that are done in an unsupervised manner. And we will actually dive into details on word2vec in the next two weeks. But, all we have to know right now is that, word2vec vectors have a nice property. Words that have similar context in terms of neighboring words, they tend to have vectors that are collinear, that actually point to roughly the same direction. And that is a very nice property that we will further use. Okay, so, now we can replace each word with a dense vector of 300 real values. What do we do next? How can we come up with a feature descriptor for the whole text? Actually, we can use the same manner as we used for bag of words. We can just dig the sum of those vectors and we have a representation based on word2vec embeddings for the whole text, like very good movie. And, that's some of word2vec vectors actually works in practice. It can give you a great baseline descriptor, a baseline features for your classifier and that can actually work pretty well. Another approach is doing a neural network over these embeddings.

Text in natural images possesses rich information for image understanding. Detecting and recognizing text facilitates many important applications. From a computer vision perspective, text is a structured object made of characters arranged in a line or curve. The unique characteristics of text makes its detection and recognition problems different than that of general objects. In the first part of this talk, I will introduce our recent work on text detection, where we decompose long text into smaller segments and the links between them. A fully-convolutional neural network model is proposed to detect both segments and links at different scales in a single forward pass. In the second part, I will introduce our work on text recognition, where we tackle the structural recognition problem with an end-to-end neural network that outputs character sequences from image pixels. Description How can we use the constantly growing number of photos and videos posted on social media? In this talk I will present three practical examples of deep neural networks applications to multimedia information extraction: logo detection, text extraction and popularity prediction. Abstract Every day large numbers of photos and videos are posted in social media. With the advent of modern deep learning, it is now possible to automatically analyze this content to get more in-depth insights. In this talk I will present three hands-on examples of how deep neural networks can be applied for social media content analysis. First, I'll present our neural network architecture used to detect logotypes in the videos given a limited amount of training data. Then I will show a working example of text-in-the-wild extraction (detection and recognition) pipeline. Machine learning is everywhere in today's NLP, but by and large machine learning amounts to numerical optimization of weights for human designed representations and features. The goal of deep learning is to explore how computers can take advantage of data to develop features and representations appropriate for complex interpretation tasks. This tutorial aims to cover the basic motivation, ideas, models and learning algorithms in deep learning for natural language processing. Recently, these methods have been shown to perform very well on various NLP tasks such as language modeling, POS tagging, named entity recognition, sentiment analysis and paraphrase detection, among others. The most attractive quality of these techniques is that they can perform well without any external hand-designed resources or time-intensive feature engineering. Despite these advantages, many researchers in NLP are not familiar with these methods. Our focus is on insight and understanding, using graphical illustrations and simple, intuitive derivations.

What about those of us who work with text? Can't we enjoy convolutions as well? In this talk I'll review some convolutional architectures that worked great for images and were adapted to text and confront the hardest parts of getting them to work in Tensorflow . Abstract The go to architecture for deep learning on sequences such as text is the RNN and particularly LSTM variants. While remarkably effective, RNNs are painfully slow due their sequential nature. Convolutions allow us to process a whole sequence in parallel greatly reducing the time required to train and infer. One of the most important advances in convolutional architectures has been the use of gating to concur the vanishing gradient problem thus allowing arbitrarily deep networks to be trained efficiently. In this talk we'll review the key innovations in the DenseNet architecture and show how to adapt it to text. We'll go over "deconvolution" operators and dilated convolutions as means of handling long range dependencies. Finally we'll look at convolutions applied to [translation] (https://arxiv.org/abs/1610.10099) at the character level. Description I used the Doc2Vec framework to analyze user comments on German online news articles and uncovered some interesting relations among the data. Furthermore, I fed the resulting Doc2Vec document embeddings as inputs to a supervised machine learning classifier. Can we determine for a particular user comment from which news site it originated? Abstract Doc2Vec is a nice neural network framework for text analysis. The machine learning technique computes so called document and word embeddings, i.e. vector representations of documents and words. These representations can be used to uncover semantic relations. For instance, Doc2Vec may learn that the word "King" is similar to "Queen" but less so to "Database". I used the Doc2Vec framework to analyze user comments on German online news articles and uncovered some interesting relations among the data. Furthermore, I fed the resulting Doc2Vec document embeddings as inputs to a supervised machine learning classifier. Accordingly, given a particular comment, can we determine from which news site it originated? Are there patterns among user comments? Can we identify stereotypical comments for different news sites? Extreme classification is a rapidly growing research area focusing on multi-class and multi-label problems involving an extremely large number of labels. Many applications have been found in diverse areas ranging from language modeling to document tagging in NLP, face recognition to learning universal feature representations in computer vision, gene function prediction in bioinformatics, etc. Extreme classification has also opened up a new paradigm for ranking and recommendation by reformulating them as multi-label learning tasks where each item to be ranked or recommended is treated as a separate label. Such reformulations have led to significant gains over traditional collaborative filtering and content-based recommendation techniques. Consequently, extreme classifiers have been deployed in many real-world applications in industry. This workshop aims to bring together researchers interested in these areas to encourage discussion and improve upon the state-of-the-art in extreme classification. Word embeddings map each word to a numerical representation in space, while still conveying their meaning. Such embeddings can be used in various applications, and provide powerful features as an input for more advanced machine learning methods for many applications. In the second part of the talk, we will discuss some recent neural network architectures, which can deliver representations for entire sentences and documents. In particular, we show how convolutional neural networks on top of word embeddings combined with distant supervised training can achieve the world best accuracy for text classification, in the example of sentiment analysis on Twitter.

Neuro-symbolic computing promises to leverage the best of both. In this session, you will see how to combine an off-the-shelf neuro-symbolic algorithm, word2vec, with a neural network (Convolutional Neural Network, or CNN) and a symbolic graph, both added to the neuro-symbolic pipeline. Description This presentation will demonstrate Matthew Honnibal's four-step "Embed, Encode, Attend, Predict" framework to build Deep Neural Networks to do document classification and predict similarity between document and sentence pairs using the Keras Deep Learning Library. Abstract A new framework for building Natural Language Processing (NLP) models in the Deep Learning era has been proposed by Matthew Honnibal (creator of the SpaCy NLP toolkit). It is composed of the following four steps - Embed, Encode, Attend and Predict. Embed converts incoming text into dense word vectors that encode its meaning as well as its context; Encode adapts the vector to the target task; Attend forces the network to focus on the most important parts of the data; and Predict produces the network's output representation. Word Embeddings have revolutionized many NLP tasks, and today it is the most effective way of representing text as vectors. TensorFlowLDN 16 Speaker: Anthony Hu Title: Multimodal Sentiment Analysis with TensorFlow Abstract: Anthony proposes a novel approach to multimodal sentiment analysis using deep neural networks combining visual analysis and natural language processing. The goal is different than the standard sentiment analysis goal of predicting whether a sentence expresses positive or negative sentiment; instead, his project aims to infer the latent emotional state of the user. Thus, it focuses on predicting the emotion word tags attached by users to their Tumblr posts, treating these as "self-reported emotions." Containing both convolutional and recurrent structures, the model was trained on TensorFlow that allows flexibility in term of neural network design and training (with multimodal inputs and transfer learning for instance) using the new TensorFlow Dataset which is a high-performance data pipeline that can easily handle different sources of data (text, images). Bio: Anthony is joining Machine Intelligence Laboratory (Ph.D.) at the University of Cambridge to work on Computer Vision and Machine Learning applied to autonomous vehicles, more precisely in scene understanding, and vehicle's interpretability. Previously, research scientist experience at Spotify where he worked on musical similarities at large-scale using audio.
