Does money make you happy | Kylian Wawoe | TEDxHaarlem
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In his TEDx talk Kilian will explain the relation between money and happiness. Many people ask themselves the question: does money make me happy? In this talk you will find that this question is not one-dimensional. Some people become very happy with money, others don't. Kilian refers to his research at one of the major banks in the world, where he studied this relationship. He worked and lived in Monaco among the richest people in the world and found out why people react differently to money and that making people happy with money is not always possible. Dr. Kilian W. Wawoe (1972) started his career as HR trainee at ABN-AMRO Bank, and held different HR jobs around the world. Besides his daily job, Kilian researched the relationship between money, happiness and performance at his bank in India, Brazil, USA, the Netherlands and Romania. The crisis of 2008 brought him at a crossroad. His thesis showed that bonuses lead not only to wrong behavior, it also does not make employees happy! Kilian had to choose: publishing his PhD or stay at the bank. He decided to leave the bank. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It’s clark from Refusing to Settle dot com — let’s go! 1. money buys the quality of life money can buy happiness…. but only to a point. 75k tops off 2. A Pet MEM: 20-somethings biggest motivation for buying a house is now their pet, not their spouse. First-year owning a pet $1,200++ Study in stumbling on happiness about nursing home who took care of a plant, that little bit of responsibility made them happier and live longer than those who didn’t have plant to look after. 3. giving // donating money “give as if you were taking” 1+1=3 (study martin p. Seligman) 4. Buy Experiences cliche or true? How many times to we need to hear this before it becomes a priority. Last year: I spent $5k-$7k on my round the world trip. Would of paid 50k for the memories alone. Amazing experience of a lifetime. When you think of experience is STILL provides happiness for years to come. i.e. concert you went to, dinner took friends to, most awesome trip you took, backpacking etc. 5. buy SUPER nice stuff This one is a bit subjective Buying REALLY nice luxury things that have a lot of meaning carry a different weight. For example, I REALLY wanted the favorite movie, Walter mitty wallet: paid $175 for replica custom version. STILL look at it and makes me happy. I value it more (now going for $25 on etsy). i.e. grandma’s (ugly) fine china, weird sofa that you bought in college for a lot of money, why i kept BOXES of expensive tech stuff in the closet. stop settling start living clark ___ // P L A Y L I S T S ▸ Best of RTS Playlist | https://goo.gl/5Spvy6 ▸ Money Monday Series | https://goo.gl/7mMxgL ▸ Journaling Series | https://goo.gl/e6j6H6 ▸ How to Get Rich Series | https://goo.gl/Q7wbc5 ___ // R E S O U R C E S 💥 How I Build My Sales Pages in Under 20-min: https://tinyurl.com/ycyuqgpp (Try it Free 14-Days Using That Link) 🏝 The App I Used to Save $11k in 6 Months without noticing | https://goo.gl/FRuXC4 (Get $5 FREE when you download/use that link) 🎧 FREE Audiobook with Audible | http://www.audibletrial.com/Refusingtosettle ✖️Join the Refusing to Settle Mastermind | https://goo.gl/wsNnwu ___ // F O L L O W ▸ instagram | @clarkdangerous ▸ instagram | @refusingtosettle ▸ facebook | /clarkdangerous ▸ facebook | https://goo.gl/wsNnwu ▸ spotify | https://tinyurl.com/yazfeujt ▸ twitter | @clarkdangerous ___ // C O U R S E S ▸ My Best Journal 2.0 | http://mybestjournal.com ▸ Video Breakthrough Academy | https://myvideobreakthrough.com ▸ Backstage Studio | https://mybackstagestudio.com ▸ 30-Day Coaching | https://my30DayCoaching.com ▸ Transformation Toolkit | (coming soon) ___ Disclaimer: Please always check with a professional before making any moves with your money. Sorry, but somebody had to say it. This video focuses on mood depression, not clinical depression. Furthermore, this is not a purported “cure” for depression. This is a call to live in reality, you own depression, depression does not own you. The Sapir Whorf Hypothesis, and General Semantics have illustrated how our words can become our prisons. The labels “Disorder” “Disease” “Depressed,” when internalized, can create a reality filled with suffering that extends beyond the biochemical. Don't get me wrong, "Chemical Imbalances" are real, but that can be a gross oversimplification of what's going on. There's a great article called "Moving Beyond ‘Chemical Imbalance’ Theory of Depression" from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (https://goo.gl/28UkYk) that I encourage everyone to read. Being happy has nothing to do with money (or drugs) | Nick Offerman
You have to pursue a discipline of one form or another to be happy in your life, says Nick Offerman as he explains his life's philosophy and why he loves woodworking. Just don't chase after perfection and learn to love mistakes. Read more at BigThink.com: https://bigthink.com/videos/nick-offerman-what-is-happiness Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Well I often espouse a general philosophy in my life of pursuing a discipline of one sort or another. But it’s not to ever approach any level of perfection. You start, you go in knowing that as human beings we never can achieve perfection, and so I feel like mastery of any skill or art form really more involves becoming much better at covering your mistakes. But no matter how much of a virtuoso a person becomes I feel like if they’re still in the mentality of a student pursuing their discipline then they’ll never finish ripping out a Beethoven symphony or playing a game of basketball and say, “There, I’ve done it. That was the perfect rendition.” Instead what keeps us living and what keeps me vitally engaged is a constant pursuit of betterment. So I gave up on perfect a long time ago, and now I’m just chasing halfway decent. Part of this philosophy I’m talking about came to me naturally. I grew up in a family out in the country in Illinois. Both my mom and dad grew up on farms. I grew up working on my mom’s family’s farms. And so we were very frugal. It was very Little House on the Prairie in the 70s and 80s which means we had a television but we were still raising as much garden as we could and everything – we got this free farmhouse in exchange – my dad had to build some cabinets for this farmer and we hired a guy to roll this house six miles and then we spent our lives there improving it. We painted it every couple of years; we built a little barn. And so I don’t know, just by naturally learning to enrich in my own life through my parent’s activities—I complained about it a lot. I wasn’t a 12 year old saying, “Hey dad, is there something I can dig up for you this weekend?” I was griping like any kid! I wanted to stay in and watch cartoons, and so we would work out a deal. And the thing that I see as a major difference between my childhood and a lot of society today is that we’ve become so good at comforting ourselves. Consumer luxury has become sort of a given. In most walks of life in this country you can choose to live a life of ease where you never have to really try very hard. You can cruise through school as long as you get passing grades. You can get some job with which you can cover your living expenses and that allows you to just watch TV, play video games, to amuse yourself, to engage in leisure all of the time you’re not earning your living. And to a certain frame of mind that might sound attractive. But I’ve kind of tried it at times. A lot of marijuana was also involved in my particular formula, and I quickly learned that it’s depressing. I don’t know, for me I quickly thought, “What are you doing with your life? Are you just going to watch cool movies… and then die?” Again to a certain part of the id I think that sounds like a great idea. “Let’s just hang out and watch The Big Lebowski over and over.” But for me thankfully because of my chemistry I came to understand that even if I wasn’t succeeding, even if I was making woodworking projects in an alley in Los Angeles 25 years ago, I was improving.

Daniel Kahneman: Moving to California Won't Make You Happy
In some crucial areas of human cognition, we don't know and we can't fully trust ourselves. On the bright side, Nobel Prize-Winning Psychologist Daniel Kahneman's work shows that the kinds of errors we tend to make are extremely predictable. Transcript-- Daniel Kahneman: If we talk about subjective well-being, there are two really different ways of looking at it, and one is to look at people's mood or state of mind as they live their life, and the other is to measure their satisfaction or their emotional reaction when they think about their life. We know now that these two are really quite different, and they are sensitive to different factors. So the things that make you satisfied do not necessarily make you happy. People have very little idea of how their tastes will change. They are susceptible, first of all, to what we call a focusing illusion, and that makes it virtually impossible to think straight about your own life. Nothing is quite as important as you think it is while you're thinking about it, so the mere act of thinking about something makes it more important than it's going to be. So you're thinking, "How much happier would I be living in California?" And you think you'd be a lot happier. Well no, you won't be a lot happier. "How much happier would I be if my income increased by 30%," you think a lot. No, it wouldn't. So just about everything that people think about, they exaggerate its importance. If you look at life satisfaction and what makes people satisfied with their lives, most of which, we know, it has a lot to do with people's goals. When we ask people how important money is to them when they are 18 and we look at their income at age 45, we find that the people that said at age 18 that money didn't matter to them very much, at age 45 money doesn't matter to them very much. So the correlation between their income and their satisfaction with life is really very low. The people who said that money is very important to them, those who made a lot of money are really quite satisfied with their lives and those who didn't make a lot of money are really quite miserable. So goals are very important to life satisfaction. Directed/Produced by Jonathan Fowler & Elizabeth Rodd http://bigthink.com/

15: Will money make me happy?
It is impossible for man's happiness to consist in wealth. For wealth is twofold, as the Philosopher says (Polit. i, 3), viz. natural and artificial. Natural wealth is that which serves man as a remedy for his natural wants: such as food, drink, clothing, cars, dwellings, and such like, while artificial wealth is that which is not a direct help to nature, as money, but is invented by the art of man, for the convenience of exchange, and as a measure of things salable. Now it is evident that man's happiness cannot consist in natural wealth. For wealth of this kind is sought for the sake of something else, viz. as a support of human nature: consequently it cannot be man's last end, rather is it ordained to manas to its end. Wherefore in the order of nature, all such things are below man, and made for him, according to Psalm 8:8: "Thou hast subjected all things under his feet." And as to artificial wealth, it is not sought save for the sake of natural wealth; since man would not seek it except because, by its means, he procures for himself the necessaries of life. Consequently much less can it be considered in the light of the last end. Therefore it is impossible for happiness, which is the last end of man, to consist in wealth. --- The desire for natural riches is not infinite: because they suffice for nature in a certain measure. But the desire for artificial wealth is infinite, for it is the servant of disordered concupiscence, which is not curbed, as the Philosopher makes clear (Polit. i, 3). Yet this desire for wealth is infinite otherwise than the desire for the sovereign good. For the more perfectly the sovereign good is possessed, the more it is loved, and other things despised: because the more we possess it, the more we know it. Hence it is written (Sirach 24:29): "They that eat me shall yet hunger." Whereas in the desire for wealth and for whatsoever temporal goods, the contrary is the case: for when we already possess them, we despise them, and seek others: which is the sense of Our Lord's words (John 4:13): "Whosoever drinketh of this water," by which temporal goods are signified, "shall thirst again." The reason of this is that we realize more their insufficiency when we possess them: and this very fact shows that they are imperfect, and the sovereign good does not consist therein. ST I-II, Q2. How much money do you need to be happy?
Research by Nobel-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman found that increasing income level does increase happiness but only up until about $75 000. After that more money just brings … more money! But even under $75 000, money is not nearly as important as something else. Researchers at University of California University asked groups of people who knew one another to fill out a questionnaire about their level of income and happiness. They found that those with more wealth were no happier then those with less. This came as a surprise. For a long time we’ve known that money doesn’t sustainably boost happiness – watch the Human Experiment episode on “How to be happier than a lottery winner” to see why. But psychologists still believed that socioeconomic status mattered. Your socioeconomic status measures the amount of success and money you have in comparison to those close to you. The theory was that if a close friend or family member had a nicer car or home that could create envy. Yet surprisingly this didn’t have much bearing on happiness. The revelation came when researchers asked people to rate how much they respected and admired one another. Here they found a direct connection. The more admired and respected a student, the happier she was. Psychologists call this sociometric status – the degree to which someone is liked or disliked by their peer group. To boost your happiness, you don’t need more money what you need is to be more liked and respected. How do you do that? People like people who are givers. Get engaged with your peer group, contribute, add value. The key to happiness is not getting, it’s giving. For more go to www.justinpresents.com

Your Sobriety Will Make Me Happy—The Work of Byron Katie®
A therapist at the Wisdom 2.0 event does The Work with Byron Katie on her belief “She won’t stop drinking.” "'She won’t stop drinking'--can you absolutely know that it’s true?" Katie asks. "The answer is a simple yes or no. The ego will want to defend and justify—it can really scream. So just thank it for sharing and go back to the question. Can you absolutely know that it’s true that she won’t stop drinking?" When she believed this thought about her friend Kathy, the woman felt responsible, angry, and afraid, and she acted in a way that she calls passive-aggressive. In one of the turnarounds, she replaces "drinking" with "rescuing"--"I won't stop rescuing"--and she sees how she too is addicted: to rescuing people who may not even want to be rescued. “If she stops drinking, then you’ll be happy—so it’s all about you,” Katie says. “You really don’t care if she drinks; you just want to be happy. And you don’t want anything to happen to her because you would be sad. So, if you're unhappy, it’s her fault. When we're unkind and passive-aggressive, we give them no reason to get sober. She’s drunk with her drinking, and you’re drunk with your thinking. Both of you are addicted.” “Yes,” says the woman, “my drugs are people. I’m mainlining Kathy, and if she’s not around I’ll replace her with someone else.” I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t my teacher. —Byron Katie Website: http://www.thework.com Webcasts: http://www.livewithbyronkatie.com Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/theworkofbk Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theworkofbyronkatie Twitter: https://twitter.com/ByronKatie © 2018 Byron Katie International, Inc. Why Money Won't Make You Happy - Grant Rant 177
Money might not make you happy, but if you're not going to be happy, lets have some money to go with your misery. Grant Cardone: You ever heard somebody say? "money won't make you happy." Oh, ok, ok, it won't. huh? That means what? That means, really when they say that, I'm broke and I'm trying to make sense of it. In fact, very few sense because that's the only thing I know about money. It makes no sense to me anymore. When a person around you, a partner, a friend, an associate, a family member says "money won't make you happy" you need to understand that what that really means is "I've given up on making money, I've tied to make some money, it didn't happen, it was too difficult for me to get, I've given up on the whole idea and now I am trying to make sense of living in this planet without money." In fact, i try to make sense of it all the time, when I go to the grocery store, the bank, when I make my house payment, when I get an electric bill, when I get my car. I'm trying to make sense of not having the things I want. So what do i say? I just make money wring, this is what people do. People do dumb things, they do dumb things and supported with stupid dumb ideas. The salesperson that can't make the sale is like a child that can't get a toy. Can't get the toy so what does the child say? "I didn't want it anyway." See, that's what the person is saying, when they say "money won't make you happy." What they are really saying to you is this "I'm broke, I tried getting money, i couldn't get it and now i'm trying to make sense of not having it. Don't believe it don't buy it, understand this is just some dumb idea that people make up in oder to make sense of something that've happened that didn't need to. Money won't make you happy, money won't make you happy, Nobody thinks it will—Money won't make you happy, I agree with that! But money will give you options, money will solve problems, money can be invented, money can give you choses. Money might not make you happy, but if you're not going to be happy, lets have some money to go with your misery. To see more Grant Cardone go to: GrantCardone.com http://www.grantcardone.com

When Money Was My God
The Big Idea: Few things reveal my true heart as much as money. When I started out my life philosophy was, “Money will solve my problems, and success will make me happy.” But the opposite happened. Money created as many (maybe more) problems as it solved. And success made me miserable. Like all of us, it made me wonder, “Does God really care about money and success?” The Bible seems to think so. At least, the Scriptures sure have a lot to say about it. In this lesson we’re going to explore how God helps men put money and success in their proper place. (And I’ll tell you how it happened to me). --------------------- Find more information, transcripts, Bible studies near you, and more at http://mimbiblestudy.com Learn more about Man in the Mirror at http://maninthemirror.org
Why Making Money Will Never Make you Happy | Jamarl's Mind
Today i'm talking about why money will never make you happy. "Does money equal happiness?" is a famous debate that has probably been discussed since the dawn of time but money was never designed to satisfy us. The more we worship it, the more we lose ourselves and our own identity trying to chase it. I'm not saying money is bad, but we need to make sure we stay humble and have get perspective on our lives so that we can use our finances wisely and efficiently. What's up my people! And this week is my next video in the “What You Were Taught Wrong about Money “series. And today, I’m gonna deal with the expression: “Money Won’t Make You Happy”. Will money make you happy, yes or no? Well, I tell you one thing I do know, I think you will agree, “Lack of money will make you miserable”. A Lack of money, ie, you’ve got less money than you need, is gonna put you in a situation where you have to compromise. You might have been in a situation where you couldn’t afford to buy kids school clothes or send them on a excursion, or go on that holiday with your friends, or pay that bill. That creates stress in your life. And stress is the enemy of happiness. So, if a lack of money will make you miserable, then, clearly, having money will make you happy. It’s not the _____. There’s a whole range of factors that go into being happy, your personal attitude and outlook on life, your values, etcetera. But you definitely need money in order to be happy. Don’t lie to yourself. There’s all these things, I call them poor sayings that poor people and other poor people say that they don’t feel bad about being poor. But if you think that money won’t make you happy, listen, stop saying it. Because what you’re doing is giving yourself an excuse for not getting ahead with your finances. Money will make you happy in concept with good values and positive attitude. But you need money to be happy. Stop lying to yourself. If you think this video was worthwhile, and you wanted something out or you wanna debate me, hit the comment section. Let’s go for it. I’m ready. And make sure you share it with your friends. Let’s get this knowledge out there. That’s if for me today. I’ll see you next week. Cheers!
