If you know the exchange rates of two currencies, you can calculate the prices of goods in one country in another country's currency. This lesson walks you through several problems in which calculations of different exchange rates allow us to determine how much goods and services in one currency will cost in terms of another. How to exchange money in Japan? Japan is a cash society. Luckily, it is the safest country in the world so it's okay to carry large amounts of cash with you at all times without the worry of being mugged or held up. Generally there is no need to buy Japanese yen in your home country before your trip, as you will most likely pay a higher commission (about 3%) and a worse exchange rate than you would get at the airports, banks, or ATMs in Japan. If you are changing cash, you frequently get a better rate at certain airport counters because they hold and trade that same cash out, but in inside the country the spread on cash is 3 to 4%. Hint: Many machines issue bills of 1,000 and 10,000 yen. If you prefer to have some smaller bills, withdraw an amount such as 19,000 Y for 9 x 1,000 Y notes instead of 2 x 10,000 notes by withdrawing 20,000 Y. Breaking a large bill for a small amounts does not seem to be a problem in Japan though - most merchants carry plenty of change. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and larger restaurants. Small business hotels and small restaurants generally do not accept credit cards. The credit card company will charge a fee on your bill for foreign exchange (usually 1-3%), and there may be a surcharge from the retailer/hotel to pay by credit card - ask first. Foreign currency and foreign travelers checks are not accepted anywhere in Japan except on certain U.S. military bases and facilities . Life in Okinawa keeps getting better! Professor L. Randall Wray explaining why government debt is not a problem for a government that issues its own floating-exchange rate currency. Because the government issues the currency, it is always capable of making its payments on time, no matter how large they are. It never has to default. Furthermore, because it is the monopoly issuer of the currency, it chooses the interest rate it pays. If it wants to raise the interest rate, it can borrow more money (sell more bonds) to raise the rate. If it wants to lower the rate, it can borrow less money, or even lend money, in order to lower the interest rate. (If it did nothing, and just deficit spends money into existence without selling bonds, then this would drive interest rates to zero, because the private sector would have more cash then it wanted and no way to get rid of it without the government taxing or borrowing it back.) What's more, paying off the debt is not likely to be inflationary, even if it is "printing money." This is because when the government buys back a bond, it has not actually given any income to anybody or made anybody richer. It just changes the form of their savings: their portfolio had bonds, now it has cash instead, but the same dollar amount. It's like swapping red dollars for blue dollars. It's not likely to cause anybody to go out and spend any money they weren't already spending, and therefore it can't lead to rising prices. Now, the story is a little different if you have a fixed exchange rate. In order to fix the exchange rate, a government buys and sells foreign currency in order to move the market price. This means they must have the foreign currency, and so much operate their economy in such a way that the foreign currency flows in, otherwise they won't be able to maintain the peg. So, anything the government can do to reduce the amount of excess cash in circulation will reduce the amount of individuals trying to buy the foreign currency from the government, which means the government will be less likely to run out. So the government's treasury MUST offer whatever interest rate is necessary for the private sector to buy all of the government's bonds, and hold them. Not so on a floating currency: the government can sell the bonds to the central bank, or just stop issuing bonds and just spend the money into existence directly. But even on a fixed exchange rate, the government always has the ABILITY to pay any amount of debt. It just might not want to because of the adverse effects on its ability to maintain the fixed exchange rate. A Chinese shop owner recently talked to me about how he ended up getting given fake money, and also after my last video many people were surprised to see the machine at the shop that checks cash to see if it's real or not, is fake and counterfeit money really such a big problem in China? Is it getting any better? How can you tell if the cash you've been given is real or fake? Watch this video to find out! When paper money was introduced in China in the 13th century, wood from mulberry trees was used to make the money. To control access to the paper, guards were stationed around mulberry forests, while counterfeiters were punished by death. In the 1990s, the portrait of Chairman Mao Zedong was placed on the banknotes of the People's Republic of China to combat counterfeiting, as he was recognised better than the generic designs on the renminbi notes. Some of the ill-effects that counterfeit money has on society include a reduction in the value of real money; and increase in prices (inflation) due to more money getting circulated in the economy - an unauthorized artificial increase in the money supply; a decrease in the acceptability of paper money; and losses, when traders are not reimbursed for counterfeit money detected by banks, even if it is confiscated. Traditionally, anti-counterfeiting measures involved including fine detail with raised intaglio printing on bills which would allow non-experts to easily spot forgeries. On coins, milled or reeded (marked with parallel grooves) edges are used to show that none of the valuable metal has been scraped off. This detects the shaving or clipping (paring off) of the rim of the coin. However, it does not detect sweating, or shaking coins in a bag and collecting the resulting dust. Since this technique removes a smaller amount, it is primarily used on the most valuable coins, such as gold. In early paper money in Colonial North America, one creative means of deterring counterfeiters was to print the impression of a leaf in the bill. Since the patterns found in a leaf were unique and complex, they were nearly impossible to reproduce. ⚫ Watch Conquering Southern China (my documentary) and see China like no one outside of China has ever seen it before: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/conqueringsouthernchina ⚫ Support me on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/serpentza Join me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/winstoninchina Twitter: @serpentza Instagram: serpent_za My other channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/advchina Music used: Tourach/Chaos Theory

From Classical economic theory, those who ignore the effects of long run trade deficits may be confusing David Ricardo's principle of comparative advantage with Adam Smith's principle of absolute advantage, specifically ignoring the latter. The economist Paul Craig Roberts notes that the comparative advantage principles developed by David Ricardo do not hold where the factors of production are internationally mobile. Global labor arbitrage, a phenomenon described by economist Stephen S. Roach, where one country exploits the cheap labor of another, would be a case of absolute advantage that is not mutually beneficial. In 2010, economist Ian Fletcher authored a significant work entitled, Free Trade Doesn't Work: What Should Replace It and Why, where he has supported a strategic approach to trade rather than an unconditional or unilateral approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_deficit Foreign-exchange reserves (also called forex reserves or FX reserves) are assets held by central banks and monetary authorities, usually in different reserve currencies, mostly the United States dollar, and to a lesser extent the Euro, the Pound sterling, and the Japanese yen, and used to back its liabilities, e.g., the local currency issued, and the various bank reserves deposited with the central bank, by the government or financial institutions. Central banks throughout the world have sometimes cooperated in buying and selling official international reserves to attempt to influence exchange rates and avert financial crisis. For example, in the Baring crisis (the "Panic of 1890"), the Bank of England borrowed GBP 2 million from the Banque de France.[15] The same was true for the Louvre Accord and the Plaza Accord. More recently, the Fed organized Central bank liquidity swaps with other institutions. During the crisis of 2008, developed countries authorities adopted extra expansionary monetary and fiscal policies, which led to the appreciation of currencies of some emerging markets. The resistance to appreciation and the fear of lost competitiveness led to policies aiming to prevent inflows of capital and more accumulation of reserves. This pattern was called Currency war by an exasperated Brazilian authority. The IMF [16] proposed a new metric to assess reserves adequacy in 2011. The metric was based on the careful analysis of sources of outflow during crisis. Those liquidity needs are calculated taking in consideration the correlation between various components of the balance of payments and the probability of tail events. The higher the ratio of reserves to the developed metric, the lower is the risk of a crisis and the drop in consumption during a crisis. Besides that, the Fund does econometric analysis of several factors listed above and finds those reserves ratios are generally adequate among emerging markets. Reserves that are above the adequacy ratio can be used in other government funds invested in more risky assets such as sovereign wealth funds or as insurance to time of crisis, such as stabilization funds. If those were included, Norway, Singapore and Persian Gulf States would rank higher on these lists, and United Arab Emirates' estimated \$627 billion Abu Dhabi Investment Authority would be second after China. Apart from high foreign exchange reserves, Singapore also has significant government and sovereign wealth funds including Temasek Holdings, valued in excess of \$145 billion and Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, valued in excess of \$330 billion. In a strict sense, foreign-exchange reserves should only include foreign currency deposits and bonds. However, the term in popular usage commonly also adds gold reserves, special drawing rights (SDRs), and International Monetary Fund (IMF) reserve positions. This broader figure is more readily available, but it is more accurately termed official international reserves or international reserves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_exchange_reserves

Historically the gold standard system had been used, which fixed currency to a select value of gold, held in a vault. The three main systems are the floating, managed and fixed exchange rate systems. The floating system has minimal government intervention, using supply and demand to determine the exchange rate. The managed exchange rate is allowed to be within a permitted band and a fixed exchange rate is usually pegged to a currency with the interest of being competitive in the international market. The video explains this in more detail and with helpful picture to guide you through the subject.
