Ever use your smartphone to pay for parking or split the dinner bill with a friend? More people are using their phones as a mobile wallet and most mobile transactions work just fine. But with technology constantly evolving the rules that should protect consumers simply haven’t caught up. In this animated video, follow along as Miles and his friend Pearl spend the day together, banking and buying music and coffee, all with their phones. Are the risks of using mobile payments holding people back and what can be done about them? For more facts on mobile payments visit: http://www.pewtrusts.com/mobilepayments. SCRIPT: Smart phones can be used for all kinds of things these days. Ok, we get it and increasingly more people are using their phones as a mobile wallet. You can pay for parking, donate to a worthy cause or split a bill with a friend. Most mobile transactions work just fine, but with technology constantly evolving, the rules that should protect you simply haven’t caught up. And government oversight isn’t clear. Meet Miles. Miles is busy and likes to pay for things with his phone. Yesterday, using his bank’s mobile app, he deposited a birthday check from his grandma. Happy Birthday, Miles! Normally when Miles deposits a check at his bank, the funds are available the next business day. But since his mobile deposit isn’t regulated the same way, Miles’s money may not be available for several days. Today, Miles is hanging out with his friend, Pearl. Pearl stops to fill up her car with gas. Miles offers to pitch in using a mobile app. He thinks his birthday money has already cleared. Miles doesn’t know it yet, but his bank won’t post Grandma’s check for a few more days, so he actually only has $10. That gas just cost an extra $35 in overdraft fees. Yikes! Miles, did you give the bank permission to overdraw your account for a fee? Like a lot of people, Miles doesn’t remember. And banks may not have to ask permission to overdraw your account for mobile transfers – like they’re required to with debit card and ATM transactions. Next, Miles and Pearl stop at their favorite coffee shop. Miles, are you concerned about data privacy? Miles likes the convenience of mobile payments and hasn’t thought much about it. But if he did run into problems, it’s not clear who’s in charge of protecting his data. Last stop -- the record store. Pearl tries to pay with her mobile wallet. But, the money is gone! Unfortunately, money stored directly on mobile wallets may not have the same protections as checking accounts. Financial institutions provide fraud protection and deposit insurance while others aren’t required to by law. Pearl, did you read your mobile wallet agreement? One tap of a finger may bind a consumer to a contract even if it is hard to read or unclear. With the right rules, Miles and Pearl’s money would be protected. Policymakers should update rules and laws to make mobile payments simple, safe, and secure for everyone. For more information, click here.

Mainland China has become the world’s largest and fastest-growing market for proximity mobile payments. People in China are now comfortable paying with their mobile phones rather than with cash. But some experts warn the public to be concerned about the security of these online payments, especially about how it can be used for personal data collection. In order to ensure currency stabilization, the Central Bank plans to take more action in the e-payment industry that may limit the development of online payments in China. Full story:

As consumer and industrial demand drives growth in digital services, an increasing number and choice of devices (e.g. connected cars, set top boxes, smartphones, tablets, wearables, and other IoT devices) are accessing potentially sensitive information. This dynamic landscape creates a very real security challenge. In this webcast, GlobalPlatform Technical Director Gil Bernabeu provides an introduction to Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) technology. Defined as a secure area of the main processor of a connected device, the TEE ensures sensitive data is stored, processed and protected in an isolated, trusted environment. This webcast provides insight into key TEE use cases, including the protection of mobile payments, premium content, FIDO-based authentication and IoT. Leiden, The Netherlands, 29th of August 2013: UL is proud to announce that a mobile payments soft launch will be taking place from the 2nd of September 2013 in Leiden, The Netherlands, as we have been actively working with the Dutch banks for the past year to make this happen. Yesterday the soft launch in Leiden was announced, it will introduce mobile payments to the public for a period of three months, starting this September 2nd. UL's Transaction Security service line Advisory Services has assisted the initiative with preparing for this soft launch from the start. Prior to the launch date, UL assisted the banks with strategic advice, test services and project management. UL contributed to an unparalleled payments experience for consumers and merchants by optimizing the wallet interface and carrying out detailed low-level performance optimizations. Because of UL's coordinating role an optimal time to market and a smooth enrolment of the mobile payments project was achieved. "UL is very pleased to be part of this initiative. As an innovative company we have been working with mobile payments for some years now and it is great to see one of the initiatives being launched in Leiden where our headquarter is located," said Amos Kater, Manager of the Mobile Competence Center at UL Transaction Security and Project Manager of this project. UL contributed to the project for over a year next to various mobile payments projects globally. Some other mobile payment initiatives UL's Transaction Security is involved in are Isis in the US, Valyou in Norway and Weve in the UK. Close your eyes and take a snapshot of the typical consumer paying for the goods and services today. Now, mirror that image with that same scenario in the future. Into this futuresque portrait, paint in a world where perpetrators of fraud and theft are unable to penetrate the technology and if they try, they cannot hide, placing the power back in the hands of the people who work to achieve the "American Dream." In merging those two scenarios you have realized the reality of today, at least in the United States. Socio and economic constraints do not enable this to be the case worldwide. Will the adoption of this embedded security standard become a determining factor in whether parties are able to continue to conduct international commerce? Let's say this, the race is on, and although the United States was slow to adopt the technology, they are now leading the pack. Wendy Schofield set out in 2007 to find solutions to the many issues facing not only consumers and merchants, but those individuals who are independently working in the U.S. payment industry. Her focus was to personify democracy in the financial world by create payment solutions that not only gave power back to the individuals working in the world of payment solutions as independent business owners, but by creating strength in the consumer position, as the individuals who drive the economic success in our communities. She gave them security in electronic payments in a fashion to take the power away from the criminal minds. The rise of mobile payments is overwhelming, but with that comes a host of security concerns. ‘[Cyber] attacks are coming from all over,’ said Mike Kalac, chief information security officer at Western Union, based in Denver, Colo. ‘It’s not anywhere specific – it’s anyone who is trying to get to that consumer data.’ Which makes safeguarding the space all the more difficult. ‘We continually test our code,’ he said. ‘We drive a culture of security within our application programmers to make sure they’re developing secure code.’ Western Union actually crowd sources its own code in an effort to protect its mobile and digital platforms. ‘We have thousands and thousands of hackers that are available to try to bust into and hack our code,’ Kalac said. ‘These are registered hackers that have turned over very interesting bugs, threats and vulnerabilities to us that we remedied.’ And while he thinks the industry is getting better at tackling security issues, there is room for improvement. ‘I think there is a lot of great technology out there,’ Kalac added. ‘There are some areas that need to become much more automated. We found that a lot of the technology in the security space is very point solution driven.’ Automation refers to computers doing the dirty work – that is, cleaning up a system after a security breach, among other tasks traditionally completed by humans. Meanwhile, Kalac said Western Union is investing tens of millions of dollars in cyber security. TheStreet's Scott Gamm reports. http://www.sileo.com/apple-pay-security/ Apple has us "Ooing" and "Ahhing" about the iPhone 6, it’s big brother the 6+ and finally the Apple Watch. But the biggest announcement of all didn’t even have to do with gadgets. The most significant words uttered by Tim Cook were about a new service that will be built into those devices… It is Apple Pay, Apple’s own version of a “mobile wallet” that will allow Apple users to pay for items with just a tap or wave of their device.

See how easy it is to make a peer-to-peer ("P2P") payment on a mobile app with a fingerprint card that adds a layer of security not offered in a smartphone. The cardholder's fingerprint is stored inside the card, and only there. After the cardholder indicates he/she wants to make a payment / donation by selecting and the $10,000 amount on the app, he/she then places a finger on the card's sensor. The card confirms it is the same fingerprint as the one stored inside the card and then it releases an acoustic / sound one-time-password. The card is held to the microphone of the smartphone and the app's software recognises the sound and then allows the user to make the transaction. No need to type login details or passwords or pins. The fingerprint technology and acoustic one-time-password provide the ease of use and security. And don't forget that none of this could happen without the battery power that is also inside this credit card-sized smart card. It's patented, in production and made in France. http://www.merealbiometrics.com

Mobile payments are a great way to engage customers, but this form of payment acceptance brings new risks because it doesn't have the same system safeguards in place that traditional payment forms do. All card networks require mobile security. To be secure, a mobile payment system must have a validated card reader, validated encryption service and a validated solution provider. PCI provides this validation. Check with your vendor to make sure your components are PCISSC validated. Using a validated mobile payment acceptance system can help you protect your customers' cardholder data while they enjoy the ease of purchasing remotely.
