Why the Deadly Asbestos Industry is Still Alive and Well

19:28
Despite irrefutable scientific evidence calling out the dangers of asbestos, 2 million tons of the carcinogen are exported every year to the developing world, where it's often handled with little to no regulation. For this episode of VICE Reports, correspondent Milène Larsson traveled to the world's largest asbestos mine in the eponymous town of Asbest, Russia, to meet workers whose livelihoods revolve entirely around the dangerous mineral. Surprisingly, the risks associated with asbestos mining didn't seem to worry the inhabitants; in fact, asbestos is the city's pride, celebrated with monuments, songs, and even its own museum. Larsson then visits Libby, Montana, another mining town almost on the other side of the globe, where the effects of asbestos exposure are undeniable: 400 townspeople have died from asbestos-related diseases, and many more are slowly choking to death. Why is the deadly industry of mining and selling asbestos still alive and well? WIRTGEN GmbH┃Job Report: Surface Miner in Russia EN

04:18
Since 2005, operations at ZAO Kavkazcement have relied on mechanical mining using the surface mining method. The mining performance of the two 2200 SM – the smallest surface miners from the broad Wirtgen product range – that were initially ordered impressed Eurocement so much that, in 2008, the next larger size was ordered – the 2500 SM. Decisive for Eurocement was that the surface miners should deliver the required mining tonnage with high productivity and at low operating costs, that the material should be reliably crushed within the prescribed gradation, and that the miners should suit the existing mine structures optimally. Three 2500 SM are currently operating in the mine. More under: http://www.wirtgen.de/en/news-media/press-releases/article_detail.42634.php

NORWAY: RUSSIANS MIGRATE TO SPITSBERGEN ISLAND IN SEARCH OF WORK

03:08
Russian/Nat Russia's recent economic problems are forcing its people ever further afield in the search for a better life. One of the most remote destinations is the Spitsbergen archipelago, a string of islands 1000 kilometres (600 miles), where the migrants find work coal mining. But life is hard for the Russian communities, a recent fire which killed 23 miners is just the latest in a string of tragedies to hit the islanders. The Spitsbergen archipelago was discovered more than 300 years ago. But a harsh climate, where temperatures never rise above 10 degrees Celsius even in summer, prevented people from settling here for centuries. Until 1920 no country even bothered to claim this bleak island in the Arctic. But when it was discovered it contained vast untapped resources, the Norwegians won a claim for the area as its own. Today, the Norwegian settlement of Longyearbyen looks like a typical Scandinavian town. Norway spends millions of dollars a year to make life for its 15-hundred inhabitants as comfortable as possible. Satellite T-V, cellular phones and the Norwegian postal service are just some of the trappings that help people survive the harsh climate and long polar nights. But a 15 minute helicopter rides brings an entirely different world -- a Russian world. Since 1932 the only other nation to take interest in Spitsbergen was Russia. And Russia's influence remains today. A Russian mining settlement called Barentsburg stands on the fjord's banks. The only thing that Norway's Longyearbyen and Russia's Barentsburg have in common is the Norwegian postal box. Barentsburg developed around huge coal mines and now looks exactly like any other Russian mining town -- replete with its own statue of Lenin. Coal mining is in deep crisis in Russia with tens of thousands miners out of work, so many have travelled to the islands. Even though Russian mines in Norway are more expensive to maintain than mines back home, Russia refuses to abandon its operations here, for reasons of strategic importance and prestige. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "I came to work here from the Rostov area in Russia because most of the mines there are shut down. Miners are out of work - that's why many want to come to work here. The money we get here is not what we've been promised, of course. But now that I am here, I don't have much choice but to work." SUPER CAPTION: Sergey Ivanov, Miner For the last few years coal production has fallen by half, and a lack of spare parts for machinery makes mining here an increasingly dangerous business. But there is no lack of applicants for the two year, no-vacation shifts. Miners from Russia and Ukraine are queuing to get a place. Victor Sadovsky is on his second tour and sees his work here as the only way to secure his future. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "My main goal is to save enough money here so I'll be able to buy something back home. Or better I'll start some small business. The only place for me to earn an initial capital for that is here. I have no chance to do so at home." SUPER CAPTION: Victor Sadovsky, Miner The town boasts no bars, no restaurants and no proper shops. The miners must dine in one huge canteen. And all products are signed for at the company store with the money directly taken from miners' salaries. The harsh lifestyle is not to everyone's taste. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Some folks want to come back to work here for a second term. But not me. The only thing I can think of is to get to the end of my term. And then I'll never come back here again." SUPER CAPTION: Georgy Klimuk, Miner The Russian mining community has had more than its fair share of tragedy. And a gas explosion in the mines last week killed 23 men. Whether you studied Latin at school or are just a fan of interesting phrases, you might know the old Latin proverb, “The early bird gets the worm.” … or something similar. The Most Depressing City On Earth

03:56
Just gonna do a little damage control here and add that the video is purely opinion. I did very little intense research, and depression is a mental illness not a characteristic of a city. I based my argument on some facts, but I'm sure you can argue that war torn cities like Damascus could be more 'depressing'. Sorry if the video came off as if I was spouting the gospel. If you think you have found a more depressing city, comment. Just do not comment Detroit. Please. Full Script: It was my goal when making this video to decide which city is the most depressing (which in this situation is a synonym for depressing). This is obviously just an opinion, but I did put some research into this and I think that my answer is very reasonable. Before we get into this, let’s take a look at the rules. I decided that a city cannot have fewer than 50,000 people I know that that isnt the official definition, but This takes a lot of remote settlements in places like Greenland out of the mix. I decided to look at what factors cause unhappiness. I found this list, and while some factors have no relation to geography, two do: Inability to sleep or excessive sleeping, and Social isolation. In order for a city to make it hard to sleep, it has to be very far north, or very far south. Cities inside the arctic circle experience the polar night, where the sun simply does not come up for days at a time. This has been known to cause insomnia. In order for a city to cause social isolation, it needs to have a hostile environment. Luckily, most cities in the Arctic Circle check that box. It also has to be isolated from other cities, and inaccessible. There are many scandinavian cities that have hostile environments, but these cities, such as Tromso (traum-suh) are tourist destinations and generally good places to live. They have high standards of living. Next, we have to turn to Russia. Two cities caught my eye immediately: the coal mining town of Vorkuta and remote port Murmansk. However, coal mining has become unprofitable in vorcuteuh, so people are moving out at alarming rates. Plus, just look at this picture and tell me that does not look jolly. And being a port city, Murmansk naturally has contact with new ideas and people. However, there is one city that I have left out. (Papers please theme) Norilsk. The Nickel mining city of 170 something thousand people is so hostile it seems like something out of 1984. No roads lead to Norilsk, and it is one of three large cities in the continuous permafrost zone that means that the land is unfarmable. There is one freight railway that leads to the city, but the only way out is an airport or a port 40 miles away that freezes over in the winter. Norilsk enters continuous darkness for 45 days each year, and when people leave the city, they say that they are going to “the mainland”. the polar night syndrome is common in residents, you can probably figure out why. It is also one of the most polluted cities on earth. Here’s a quick list of facts about norilsk’s pollution: 1 percent of global emissions of sulfur dioxide comes from Norilsk nickel mines . It is so polluted that some people mine the soil for soot because it contains precious minerals. In September 2016, the nearby river turned red. The life expectancy of a worker in Norilsk is 10 years lower. A study done by Boris Revich showed that blood illnesses were 44% higher, nervous system illnesses 38% higher, and bone and muscle system illnesses 28% higher among children in Norilsk WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER CHILDREN IN SIBERA. In any other city, people might protest these terrible, polluted conditions. But in Norilsk, the income for nearly everybody comes from one company: Norilsk Nickel. Any protestors would be fired, because even if you do not work in the mines, Norilsk Nickel also owns nearly all businesses in town. And the Russian Government has no plans to step in, because this company is a cash cow. Norilsk Nickel is 2% of the Russian GDP. In comparison, the entire city of San Francisco is 2% of the US GDP. The city has a depressing past as well: it was built by 500,000 gulag prisoners working under starving conditions throughout the month long days and nights. Of which eighteen thousand died. The most obvious relic of this era can be found all over the city: the stalinist, utilitarian architecture of nearly every building in the city. But hey, they painted the city bright colors so it can’t be that bad right?

11 Most Massive Mines in the World

10:20
From the worlds largest gold mine found on the top of a mountain to the largest diamond mine in the world here are the most massive mines in the world! Subscribe to American EYE! 5.. Asbestos Mine, Canada Also known as the Jeffrey Mine, it’s located in Asbestos, Quebec and it was in operation until 2012. It’s a whopping 2 kilometers wide and 370 meters deep! Check out this thing on google maps and you can tell how completely massive this thing is! It’s the by far the largest asbestos mine in the world. For a long period of time, people would use this mineral to put into their walls and keep their homes from catching on fire! But recently there’s been a link with asbestos and a disease called mesothelioma, which is a lung condition. This is a toxic substance that people should avoid, so obviously this large mine went out of business. The lake at the bottom might look like an inviting blue, but you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s highly toxic! The small town that grew with the thriving asbestos industry feels like they’ve kind of lost their identity once the mine was forced to close, but people do still live there. 4. Mcarthur River Uranium Mine In case you were wondering which mine produces the most uranium in the world, that would be of course the Mcarthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan Canada. This huge deposit was found in 1988 and finally a mining operation took place in 1997, when it began producing what’s known as Yellowcake. It’s not the kind of yellow cake you’d eat with your grandparents. This stuff has a horrific odor and basically what it is, is concentrated uranium powder which can then be used for powering nuclear reactors. We imagine this powdery substance is quite difficult to get ahold of. There aren’t a ton of photos of this place but, it does produce about 13 percent of the global uranium production across the globe. 3. Diavik Diamond Mine In case you thought it was Africa who had all the massive diamond mines, think again! The Diavik Diamond mine, found in the the northwest territories of Canada is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the Northern hemisphere and this place is pretty crazy! They annually produce 7 million carats of diamonds each year and you better believe it’s not easy to get here. The Diavik mine is found north of the arctic circle and it’s definitely cold! This photo here shows the subarctic landscapes that surround the diamond mine. You thought getting to work in the morning was tough for you? Imagine trying to get to work here! Just recently in 2015, this diamond produced what was known as the Diavik Foxfire 187.7 which is one of the largest rough gem quality diamonds ever produced. 2. Siberian Diamond Mine Also known as the Mirny Mine, The USSR began searching for ways to make to make themselves a more economical stable and independent union. In 1955 the Soviets discovered large diamond deposits at this site in the far away lands of Siberia and many people got to work very quickly in order to help bring wealth to the union. After about 20 years of operations, they finally decided that At one point this mine produced 10 million carats of diamonds a year and reaches a max depth of 524 meters or around 1700 feet making it the 2nd largest excavated hole in the world. The mine is so deep, airspace is closed over the hole due to helicopter crashes caused from the downward flow of air. The construction of this in the frigid conditions of Siberia must have been grueling and downright cruel. Sources state that the machinery used at this mine had to be covered at night or it would freeze Are the diamonds worth freezing to death?! It’s unoperational today but Some claim that there’s still a bunch of diamonds in this mine and the whole thing could be worth about 12 Billion dollars. It’s possible that controlling this diamond is mine is crucial to controlling the price of diamonds across the world. Bingham Copper Mine The bingham copper mine located near Salt Lake City Utah is home to the biggest pit in the world and it’s been in operation since 1903. It’s about 2.5 miles wide and if it were a stadium, it would be able to fit an estimated 9.5 million people. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too! Diligent workers can move about 250,000 tons of rock each day and it’s even become a tourist attraction in recent years before a massive landslide took place. Some claim that this was the biggest non volcanic landslide to take place in North American modern history. This photo we see here shows you the aftermath of this massive landslide and Bingham Copper mine and it makes you wonder how safe some of the conditions at these mines truly are. The landslides were so massive, that they actually triggered a few small earthquakes! Experts estimated that 165 tons of earth slide down from the top of the mine all the way to the bottom.

WIRTGEN GmbH┃Job Report: Mining efficiency in Mississippi with the Surface Miner

02:56
Extending over some 23.5 km2, the mine contains some 2 billion tons of lignite. However, the lignite lies in six seams of different thicknesses, each separated by intermediate layers of marl. If the lignite is to be extracted economically, it is extremely important to separate the different materials very precisely during the mining process. North American Coal is committed to setting industry standards in the mining sector in terms of safety, environmental protection and innovation. But even in this mine, it made sense to increase efficiency using modern technologies, and it was this which prompted the decision to use a Wirtgen 4200 SM Surface Miner. Golden Gamble. Gold mining in the Philippines, a dirty business

25:41
More films about the Philippines: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/philippines/ - The use of child labour in the Philippine’s Paracale, or ‘Goldtown’, is widespread - Extracting gold involves diving into mud-filled shafts and using toxic mercury - Poverty and lack of alternative jobs force people into this highly dangerous work - Many die young due to work accidents or breathing problems, others develop chronic illness The Philippines’ town of Paracale was dubbed “Goldtown” for its rich deposits of the precious metal. Despite government attempts to regulate mining, illegal pits are still commonplace. They lack even the most basic health and safety and workers are exposed to toxic mercury fumes. Dirty water causes skin diseases and they live with the constant threat of being buried alive. Workers continue to take these risks day after day, because there is no other source of income. Many of the gold miners are children whose families can’t afford to send them to school. Some gold is panned on the surface, but a lot has to be extracted from underground. To do that, prospectors dive into narrow, mud-filled shafts, uses snorkelling masks and long tubes too breathe. If the mine collapses, they have no chance of escape. They have a saying here, ‘while you’re down the mine, you have one foot in the grave’. Several miners have already died that way, others from respiratory diseases caused by inhaling mercury fumes. The toxic metal is used in gold extraction with no safety precautions, so it poisons the air, the ground and the water, causing long-term harm to the whole community. Another danger to the inhabitants of Paracale comes from disused mines, abandoned and left open, waiting for unsuspecting victims to fall in. The business takes its toll on workers, their families and the community. They have been known to demonstrate, demanding safer working conditions, better pay and other job opportunities, but change is slow. Meanwhile, extreme poverty among people who produce one of the world’s most precious metals leaves them no option but to continue with this pitiless occupation. Enjoy the visit to export quality Marbles Mines in Makrana . Witness the excavation of giant marbles blocks with big excavator machine by mining technology . मकराना संगमरमर खान खदान , नागौर , राजस्थान में है | Manufacturers of marbal in Ajmer have big mines.production and supply of the best quality marbles is from here also apart from Makrana, Nagaur. Marbles & Industries in Rajasthan India are leading manufacturers, producers, mine owners and exporters of high quality Indian Marbles. kishangarh in Ajmer is the Asia's biggest marble market. Makrana marble is a type of white marble of high quality,[citation needed] popular for use in sculpture and building decor. It is mined in the town of Makrana in Rajasthan, India, and was used in the construction of several iconic monuments such as the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. Geology In the Makrana area, marble is found as five steeply-dipping bands. They form part of the Ajmer Formation of the Delhi Supergroup, which is a sequence of sedimentary rocks that was deposited in the Delhi Basin during the Proterozoic. About 1450 Ma (million years ago) these rocks were affected by the Delhi Orogeny, causing the metamorphism that transformed the original limestones to marble and the folding that caused the steep dip and the current outcrop pattern. Properties Makrana is regarded as the oldest place in India with a marble quarry. Upon mining, Makrana marble is not subjected to any form of treatment, but used in cutting and chiseling straight away.Makrana marble is one of the two calcitic marble varieties in India, with all others being dolomitic. It has two varieties: white and albeta. The quantity of marble reserves in the region is estimated to be 55 million tonnes by the state government.About 120 thousand tonnes of the marble are produced annually from over 400 mines in the region. Makrana marble has high percentage of calcium and is therefore resistant to water seepage. The water absorption of Makrana marble is said to be the lowest among all types in India, and the marble is claimed to contain 98 percent of calcium carbonate and only two percent of impurities. The different shades of Makrana marble are pure white, white with grey shades and white with pink shades, depending on the level of impurities. The close interlocking property of the marble makes it strong, hard and translucent. It is said to retain its shine and white color for a long period of time. Notable monuments and buildings Victoria Memorial in Kolkata Prominent buildings/monuments that used Makrana marble in their construction are: Taj Mahal, Agra, India Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, India– Makrana marble was chosen over various other European types in the construction of the Victoria Memorial, after several tests concluded Makrana marble to be superior. Anthracite Coal Mining circa 1920

15:59
more at http://scitech.quickfound.net/ "Lots of diagrammatic animation. Anthracite coal mining. Underground mining shots." Silent. Earth Sciences, mining, oil, etc. playlist:: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL33B1A9216BB65F7A Public domain film from the Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthracite Anthracite... is a hard, compact variety of mineral coal that has a high luster. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coals, which also include bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92.1% and 98%... Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame. Anthracite is categorized into standard grade, which is used mainly in power generation, and high grade (HG) and ultra high grade (UHG), the principal uses of which are in the metallurgy sector. Anthracite accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, and is mined in only a few countries around the world. China accounts for the lion's share of production; other producers are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Vietnam, the UK, Australia and the US. Total production in 2010 was 670 million tons... Terminology Other terms which refer to anthracite are black coal, hard coal, stone coal (not to be confused with the German Steinkohle or Dutch steenkool which are broader terms meaning all varieties of coal of a stonelike hardness and appearance, like bituminous coal and often anthracite as well, as opposed to lignite, which is softer), blind coal (in Scotland), Kilkenny coal (in Ireland), crow coal (or craw coal from its shiny black appearance), and black diamond. "Blue Coal" is the term for a once-popular and trademarked brand... Anthracite is similar in appearance to the mineraloid jet and is sometimes used as a jet imitation. Anthracite differs from ordinary bituminous coal by its greater hardness, its higher relative density of 1.3--1.4, and lustre, which is often semi-metallic with a mildly brown reflection. It contains a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter... The moisture content of fresh-mined anthracite generally is less than 15 percent. The heat content of anthracite ranges from 22 to 28 million Btu per short ton (26 to 33 MJ/kg) on a moist, mineral-matter-free basis... Anthracite may be considered to be a transition stage between ordinary bituminous and graphite, produced by the more or less complete elimination of the volatile constituents of the former... History of mining and use In southwest Wales, anthracite has been burned as a domestic fuel since at least medieval times. It was mined near Saundersfoot. In the United States, anthracite coal history began in 1790 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with the discovery of coal made by the hunter Necho Allen in what is now known as the Coal Region... By 1795, an anthracite-fired iron furnace had been built on the Schuylkill River... In spring 1808, John and Abijah Smith shipped the first commercially mined load of anthracite down the Susquehanna River from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, marking the birth of commercial anthracite mining in the United States. From that first mine, production rose to an all-time high of over 100 million tons in 1917. From the late 19th century until the 1950s, anthracite was the most popular fuel for heating homes and other buildings in the northern United States... Many large public buildings, such as schools, were heated with anthracite-burning furnaces through the 1980s... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mining The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery... Coal mining has had a lot of developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers...
