"Rubies from Montepuez, Mozambique" by GIA
In this video, you’ll explore Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby deposit with GIA’s dedicated field gemology team. First, you’ll see how the legal owner of the mining rights—Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), a subsidiary of the Gemfields corporation—works the area in steps from prospecting through separating the rubies from the ore, to sorting and eventual sale at their Singapore rough auction. In the second part you’ll also catch a glimpse of a day in the life of the thousands of unlicensed miners—garimpeiros—who conduct unauthorized mining in the MRM-owned area. Since spring 2009, this east African country has emerged as the world’s leading ruby source. As Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu says of the Montepuez ruby deposit: “I have never seen any place where you have this combination of quantity, nice color, and nice clarity.” Every gem miner dreams of finding a big stone one day. “The garimpeiros here, most of them are local (meaning Mozambican) people,” explains Pardieu, “but there are also some Tanzanians here who are working with them. And the Tanzanians have a very good knowledge of ruby mining because you have ruby mining in Tanzania for more than 50 years.” You’ll see the conditions garimpeiros work under—the pits, the dirt—the rubies they find and how they live, and visit a garimpeiro village. Finally, you’ll visit foreign buyers in Montepuez, which, Pardieu explains, consist of “about 500 to 600 Thai people and about 100 people from Sri Lanka.” The cash gained by these buyers provides the economic impetus for continuing unauthorized mining inside the MRM perimeter. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.
Coal Rush in Mozambique | Global 3000
A few years ago, what's thought to be the world's largest coal deposits were discovered in north-western Mozambique. Tete Province is sitting on billions of tonnes of coal reserves. The discovery has transformed the region. The prospect of reaping huge profits has led some of the world's biggest multinational mining companies to invest billions here. But is the local population benefiting from the boom? For more go to: http://www.dw.de/global-3000-the-globalization-program-2012-11-26/e-16362981-9798

Three Ruby Mining Operations at Montepuez, Mozambique
On a trip to the ruby mining area around Montepuez, we heard about Gemfields plans at Montepuez Ruby Mine, and visited their ambitious project to farm chickens in partnership with a local women's association. We were also able to see Mustang's Montepuez Ruby Project and exploration pits at Metals of Africa's concession as well as visit areas where garimpieros (unlicensed miners) were digging. Gem quality ruby now being found at these newer sites indicates that the boundaries of this large deposit are yet to be established. This film is published with thanks to Vincent Pardieu, GIA and our generous hosts at Montepuez Ruby Mine, Gemfields and Montepuez Ruby Project at Mustang as well as Mr Constantine at Metals of Africa. Thank you also to our team members, Wim Vertriest, (GIA), Floriane Duret (geologist and gemologist) and Marie Lemoux (gemologist). This films was made by Rosey Perkins (gemologist).

Africa Investigates - Mozambique's Gem Wars
Six years ago local hunters stumbled on one of the world's largest deposit of rubies in the northern province of Mozambique, a potential source of riches for a country in which much of the population lives on less than a dollar a day. The deposits are now being mined by a local company, Mwriti, in partnership with a British company, Gemfields, which owns the luxury Fabergé brand and prides itself on the ethical sourcing of precious stones - "completely traceable from mine to market". Their joint venture, 75 percent owned by Gemfields, controls a concession that covers 340 square kilometres of land and promises to be hugely profitable. But disturbing allegations have emerged that threaten to cast a dark shadow over the project. For this episode of Africa Investigates, Mozambican journalist Estacio Valoi joined forces with award-winning filmmaker Callum Macrae to find out more. - Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check out our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

All thanks to man'’s unlikely new best friend: the rat. “Rats have been used for the detection of explosives for many years. "There were experiments using laboratory rats back in the 50’s”" says this NGO worker. Near a village, a de-mining team is sent on a suspected minefield. Too light to detonate the mines, the rats are also able to smell them out in any weather. “"I'’m confident about their work. I trust them completely”," says Cerveza who trained his rats for two years. They scratch the ground to indicate the location of the explosives before their human colleagues take over the risky job. Soon, the villagers praise the furry heroes as two live landmines are safely detonated. But the work to clear the area has only just begun: "“For a task like this, we would expect to take about three or four weeks."” SBS Australia – Ref. 4620 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Rubies in Mozambique
Here is my latest field video about rubies from Montepuez in Mozambique. It was done after our recent visit in July 2017. We continued to follow the evolution of the mine at MRM Gemfields, showing this time the "Maninge Nice" ruby producing area and the CSR program that MRM built to support the local communities. Besides Gemfields we also visited the 2 new mining companies who started exploration nearby: "Mustang Resources" and "Mozambique rubies", they are at a much early stage compared to MRM, but nevertheless it was interesting to see what they did and how they worked. For more info, you can see two more videos about my previous visits to Mozambique on the YouTube "GIA Field Gemology Project" channel.
Rats Used to Clear Over 2,400 Mines in Mozambique
Rats are used to clear 2,400 mines in Mozambique. All around the world, many war-torn areas are littered with unexploded land mines. In Mozambique, African rats are clearing minefields of dangerous explosives. The large African rats were specially trained to be Mine Detection Rats by the Belgian Non Governmental Organization known as Apopo. Mines are a serious problem in Mozambique, where there are still tens of thousands of explosives that were laid during various wars over the decades. Since the rats began detecting mines in 2006, they have uncovered over 24 hundred of them, clearing over 2 square miles of the countryside in Mozambique. Using rats to detect the mines is much more efficient and safer than other current methods like metal detectors or dogs. Apopo also trains rats to diagnose people who have tuberculosis by smelling them. Over 22 hundred people who were not diagnosed by microscopy had tuberculosis that was detected by the rats. What do you think? Is it a good idea to use rats as a way to detect land mines?

Conservation Gemstones - Mozambique
Dear all, I'm happy to invite you to discover the most recent field video on my new YouTube Channel: In this short video you will discover what we saw on our recent visit to the Montepuez ruby producing area in Northern Mozambique. That field expedition main objective was to collect reference samples for the "Bahrain Institute for Pearls & gemstones (DANAT)". During that expedition that took place in June and July 2018, we visited the MRM (Montepuez ruby mining) area where we were able to continue witnessing and documenting the ruby mining activity. We could see some interesting changes at the wash plant as a new sorting house is under construction. But on that visit what interested us particularly was how Gemfields is already rehabilitating some of their mining pits backfilling them and planting back local trees as they are mining. So on that new video about ruby mining in Mozambique, we decided to put this time the focus on that side and show also the support Gemfields is giving to a fascinating conservation program in the neighboring Niassa National Reserve (where mining is illegal): The "Niassa Lion Project" as gemfields has decided to launch their "conservation stone" program. I do believe that it is great to see a mining company promoting and supporting financially a conservation program as part of their CSR (Corporate Social responsibility) program. If the gems from the mineral world could do more to support the gems from the living world (that are protected areas) it would help to protect these beautiful areas that need our support. It could also improve the image of the gemstone industry and for sure provide a better feeling to people buying gems from Africa. I just hope that more people and companies will do that. Many thanks for this video to all the people we met in Mozambique for their welcome and support and more particularly to people at MRM and at the Niassa Lion Project. Enjoy!

Doing Business in Africa - Mozambique - Part 1 - Mega Projects and Mining
When Mozambique emerged from a 17 year civil war in 1992, its economy was in tatters, infrastructure had been destroyed and there was no industry to speak of. A peace deal between Frelimo and Renamo, put an end to the conflict. At the same time there were some important developments going on next door. The release of Nelson Mandela from 27 years of imprisonment and the ensuing democracy provided the impetus for further regional stability. And it set the stage for sound macroeconomic reform and rapid growth Mozambique would experience over the next decade.

CEO Interview: Value in mining companies, Oman and Mozambique offer great potential
The CEO of Savannah Resources, David Archer, joined Zak Mir and Mike Ingram on the Tip TV Finance Show to provide us with an update of the activities and the future developments planned for Savannah Resources, and their opinions on copper. Commodity prices to rise? Archer outlined that it is hard to see optimism in the current commodity environment, but bringing mines online now is a real opportunity with normalisation on the cards and commodity prices to rise. Copper to recover with China Archer commented that he expects an increase in global industrial production, but for now Copper remains a hostage of the China situation, with 40% of global copper production being directed to the country. He continued that he hoped China would continue to grow, along with increased consumption from India and the US. Oman the focus for Savannah Resources He noted that Oman has development potential, with good infrastructure, a history of copper success and an export port very close. Archer believed the low operating costs where Savannah Resources have saved around $10 million and 3 years of drilling, have reduced the time frame to 2 years before the first production of copper is achieved. He also added that both Oman, and their other project in Mozambique, have quality management teams and aim to deliver value in the current market. The Bomb-Sniffing Rats Saving Lives In Mozambique
During Mozambique's bloody civil war, land mines were placed near schools, bridges and villages. After the war, de-mining the country took some serious work. Enter bomb-sniffing rats. Mining, displacement and empowerment: Working with resettled women in Mozambique
One of the poorest countries in the world, Mozambique is extremely rich in natural resources. But while the extractive industry provides important revenues for the country’s economic development, it also creates deep social problems. We caught up with the Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Mozambique to discuss coal extraction in the Western region of Tete, and how the EU is working for women’s empowerment amid community resettlements. "Rubies and sapphires from Chimwadzulu, Malawi" by GIA
In this video, you will experience the “warm heart of Africa,” as GIA field gemologists visit Malawi’s Chimwadzulu ruby mine for the very first time. Although this is one of the continent’s oldest-known ruby and sapphire deposits—discovered in 1958—it’s largely unknown to the gem trade or public at large. Malawi is one of the smallest African nations, bounded by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south, and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by the waters of Lake Malawi. “I read about Chimwadzulu a very long time ago…and this is a place I’ve wanted to come to for a very long time,” says GIA Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu. The deposit’s geology is very complex, he explains, and the mine’s sapphires provide a key to understanding it. Although the Chimwadzulu deposit is known for ruby and orange sapphire, it produces mainly pale green, blue, and yellow sapphire. As always, a core goal of the expedition is to procure samples for GIA’s research programs, but understanding the gems as part of the geology and the mining operation—along with the people who labor to produce it—is also tremendously important. “When you look at the stone, you don’t view it the same way when you have the story of the stone, too,” explains Pardieu. The country is struggling to develop, and ethical stewardship of its gem resources is a part of the solution. Some of the possible benefits to local communities are a hospital and a school funded by the Chimwadzulu mining operation—a consortium between Nyala Mines Ltd. and Columbia Gem House, Inc. Pardieu and his team were able to visit the facility and observe the difference it makes. “In many African countries, the right access to education and health is really a luxury,” remarks Pardieu. “…you’re bringing to these people what is normal for us, but a luxury for them.” They also visited the elementary school, gaining a snapshot of the country’s youth and their boundless potential if Malawi’s resources can be harnessed for the good of all its citizens. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel and field gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.
