Why We Need to End the Era of Orphanages | Tara Winkler | TEDxSydney
Tara Winkler speaks out against the spread of orphanages in developing countries, caused by the good intentions of foreign donors, and of harm that comes to children when they are separated from family and left to grow up in institutions. Tara is the Managing Director of the Cambodian Children’s Trust (CCT) which she established with Jedtha Pon in 2007 in order to rescue fourteen children from a corrupt and abusive orphanage. She has led CCT through a number of significant organisational changes, including the closure of the initial CCT orphanage in favour of a family-based care model to empower Cambodian families to escape poverty, assist institutionalised children return to families, and help orphanages transform to a family-based care model. Her first book, ‘How (NOT) to Start an Orphanage – by a woman who did’ was published in April 2016. She has a successful record in leading transformational organisation change, instilling good governance and providing excellent people management at organisations such as Netball Victoria and Netball Australia. Growing up in regional Victoria, Australia in the town of Shepparton, Kate fell in love with sport playing netball, softball and was a keen waterskier. She studied a Honours Degree in Applied Science at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a Masters of Sport Management at Deakin University. In 2014, Kate was awarded the AIS Sports Performance Leadership Award. Her passion for sport extends to governance roles at the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, Victoria Institute of Sport, Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, International Netball Federation and the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Known for her ability to engage a diverse audience, she values having different voices and opinions at the table. She knows that to influence a system you need to get inside it, be reasonable and don’t give up. As a leader she believes in working with people in a team, showing them a vision for the future and being truly authentic. On today’s show, On this episode of the active CEO Podcast, we talk to Kate Palmer about finding her dream job, where she combines her passion for sport, and desire to improve the health and wellbeing of a nation. We delve into her role of leading and catalysing the Australian sport industry to encourage more Australians to become more active, and shape the future of elite and grass roots sport. Ben Gathercole and Craig Johns discuss topics, with Kate, such as transformational change, reducing layers of compliance, the future of sport business structures, the new ‘move it’ campaign, and how she implements health and wellness into the team at Sport Australia. Kate talks about: Her memories of sport as a young child and the emotions that still remain. Growing up in rural Victoria, in Shepparton. The benefits of meetings in motion and walking meetings. Sport providing the health of local communities. Ensuring young children learn and develop the basic movement fundamentals. What inspired her to become a sport administrator. First impressions, on day one, when she took the reigns as CEO of Sport Australia. Transitioning from being a CEO of employees to leading a whole industry. How Sport Australia can be a better partner and focus on the things that count. The relationship between the Minister of Sport, the Office of Sport and Sport Australia. Reducing layers of compliance and keeping it simple. Why it is important for sport organisations to consider and adapt to new business models in the future. Ensuring sport organisations have the structures and capability to be sustainable in the future. When an organisation faces major cultural and integrity challenges, is it possible to make long-term sustainable changes internally or is an external ‘fresh set of eyes’ approach, required. Health and wellness of athletes, and how they transition into the ‘real world’ after life in sport. Changing the lives of people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Can we look at different ways of working in the sport industry as an administrator, coach or high performance management. The significance of the ‘move it’ and ‘find our 30’ campaigns. Changing the balance and ensuring that she reads, exercises and eats a healthy breakfast. The Hugh Palmer scholarship and the “corporate handbag”. Active CEO Wellness Tip Ben and I talk about the importance of self-regulation and why it is such an important element of emotional intelligence. We talk about being aware of your emotions, how to manage and express them at the right time. Self-regulation is also about the ability to remain calm, consider all the possibilities and have a clear head. Tweets “I am quite a practical person, pragmatic, and I can see things, I like to change things, and I like to fix things.” Gaining an insight into Kate Palmer, the CEO of Sport Australia, on the active CEO Podcast. “Take responsibility and make a decision. If you fail or if you make a mistake we fix it, we will fix it together.” Kate Palmer on giving responsibility to employees, on the active CEO Podcast. “I don’t think sports can look at us and say, you give us 80 to 90% of our revenue, and that’s a lot of money, but we are not prepared to improve our business.” Kate Palmer on investing in sport for the future, with the active CEO Podcast.

Clean Slate
At any moment, we can change our direction. Our life is similar to our hair in that way, once it becomes a tangled mess; you can either try detangling it or starting over. Having Bipolar Disorder, I had to rebuild my life at the ripe age of 20. Looking back was not an option as the past is where many current day insecurities came from, whether that is rejection, exclusion, loneliness or feeling unworthy of love. After living in a psychiatric ward for 80 days, facing many new challenges, one almost costing my life, I learned new ways to cope and manage my illness. Four years on and I've never been better, gaining more self-awareness than before and embracing my vulnerabilities to reach out to others suffering their own mind. Shaving my head bald is a symbol that it's okay to "give in" and do something new even though it scares the life out of you. An organisation that has helped me significantly during my recovery is The Black Dog Institute who focus on the research, education and treatment of mood disorders. If you want to help keep Australian minds healthier, you can either donate, educate yourself or utilise the abundance of mental health tools available for free at: www.blackdoginstitute.org.au Thanks for your time, may your body be nourished, your heart full and your mind healthy.

The New European Community laws governing data protection are imminent and will have a fundamental impact on the way that most organisations in European Union member states implement security policies and report breaches.  However, research done by FireEye and IDG shows that organisations are not fully prepared for the implementation of the legislation, and it is critical these organisations begin preparing now to be in compliance and not be caught unprepared. In this webinar, Adam Palmer, Director of International Government Affairs, will answer key questions about: - The legislation explained in business terms - Practical advice on compliance and security standards to keep your company prepared. - Next steps and time scales to prepare your organisation - How to avoid costly penalties.

It is the manager who determines whether our social institutions serve us well or whether they squander our talents and resources.” — Henry Mintzberg (01:38) “Empowerment is what managers do to people. Engagement is what managers do with people.” — Henry Mintzberg (01:45) “Organizational effectiveness does not lie in that narrow minded concept called rationality.
