Asset Management: Industry Overview and Careers in Asset Management

04:45
Asset Management: Industry overview and Careers in Asset Management Asset Management is about managing clients’ investments and providing them with the strategies and expertise that would allow them to achieve their goals and secure their financial future. This video is part of our series dedicated to the different sub-industries in the world of Business & Finance. Our goal is to understand how it functions, what type of services it offers its clients, which are the major players in the field and what it is like to do this for a living. An individual or an institution is likely to approach an asset management firm when their investment income is substantial. In such cases, asset managers are able to offer expertise across a wide spectrum of asset classes (such as stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate, private equity, etc). Moreover, large firms have branches all over the world and are therefore able to offer geographical expertise as well. Given that asset managers closely follow all of these markets, they are able to offer high-quality advice and superior risk-return investments. The large players in the asset management industry are indeed very large. There are several companies whose assets under management exceed $1 trillion. Some of them are pure investment funds (BlackRock, Vanguard, StateStreet, Fidelity), while others are arms of the large banking conglomerates (Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, UBS, BNP). The largest firm in the world in terms of assets under management in 2015 was BlackRock. MY PERFECT STOCK PORTFOLIO - SVEN CARLIN PH.D.

10:32
STOCK MARKET PORTFOLIO Investing in stocks means you end up with a portfolio as having only one stock is too risky because you never know what might happen. Today, we’ll discuss MY PERFECT PORTFOLIO and 5 things to watch when building a portfolio in 2018! Do you have a good investment portfolio? Do you know what is portfolio management? How to manage your portfolio? Does it allow you to take advantage of the opportunities that might come in today’s finance environment? Is it hedged in a way? I’ll try to answer those questions by showing how I go about portfolio strategy and the 5 key factors to watch when building a portfolio! BEST STOCK PORTFOLIO FOR 2018 We often discuss stocks, news, certain sectors but what is the perfect stock market portfolio in 2018? As I am building a Model Portfolio for my Stock Market Platform, I think a video on how to build a portfolio today would be really good. We don’t talk enough about portfolio management and how would my perfect portfolio look at this point in time! WHAT IS A GREAT PORTFOLIO? A stock portfolio is a combination of various stocks that will lead you to satisfying investment returns no matter what happens in the economy and financial markets. 5 KEY PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT THINGS TO WATCH: Whether you only have a google finance portfolio or an actual money portfolio this exercise will help you understand the risk and reward you’re your stock market investments. 1) VALUE SHOULD BE THE FOCUS OF YOUR PORTFOLIO In an environment of low inflation, sky high stock prices, a long term investor has to keep his focus on value. What will be the things people will use also in a recession and what will be the technologies that will grow no matter what. Having value gives you protection from inflation and in case that stock prices drop you know you can easily buy more. 2) PORTFOLIO VALUATION IS KEY Your long term returns depend on the earnings the stocks you have in your portfolio generate. If you can build a portfolio with better valuations but great assets, you will reach great financial results! Fortunately, there are great investing opportunities if you are willing to look for them. 3) MANAGE THE RISK OF YOUR PORTFOLIO The stock market is usually very volatile, especially if you look at specific sectors. That is why you have to give yourself time to buy and prepare a portfolio. A few years, a healthy economic cycle, some market panics should do the trick. So, what I am doing with my model portfolio will take a bit to set up as it is a process and we have to wait for investment opportunities to come to us. Chasing stocks and buying just because it looks nice in a portfolio, simply increases the risk and lowers long term portfolio returns. 4) MY PERFECT PORTFOLIO EXPOSURE The perfect portfolio exposure depends on volatility and risk and also hedges! It also depends on the risk reward of each position at the current moment so it is really a process through time, real portfolio management. But to give you an idea of how I see this at this moment in time, here it is: GREAT BUSINESSES ACROSS: 20% DEVELOPED markets and global 8% LATAM 8% CHINA 8% ASIA (incl. Russia) 8% HEDGES & GOLD 8% REAL ESTATE 15% COMMODITIES 25% - CASH AND OPPORTUNITIES This will be around 20 stocks and a lot of those would be mixes. Further this does not include the cash balances in each position depending on the current opportunities and risk reward. Some stocks get hit extremely hard during a recession, while some simply continue to grow thanks to their amazing technology. 5) PORTFOLIO RISK AND REWARD In the long term, when it comes to stock market investing and portfolio management, even if only 5 things of 10 things only go right – the point is that you can make so much money on those five, if you do things properly, that you will not care about the losses. It is not rare that good stocks go up 10 or 50 times in a decade or two (multibagger stocks) that are the drivers of your portfolio returns. Careful risk reward portfolio management allows you to take advantage of such stocks. Portfolio management – it is about risk reward and value! What do I do? 8 Data Science Projects in Banking & Finance

13:44
Financial data analysis is as much a broad area as Finance. You can use it for managing/mitigating different types of financial risk, taking decisions on investment, managing portfolio, valuing assets etc. Below are a few beginner level projects you can try working on. 1- Build a Credit Scorecard Model - Credit scorecards are basically used to assess credit worthiness of customers. Use German Loan data-set (publicly available credit data) to build credit scorecard for customers. The data set has historical data on default status of 1000 customers and the different factors that are possibly correlated with the customer’s chances of defaulting such as salary age, marital status etc. and attributes of the loan contract such as term, APR rate etc. Build a classification model (using techniques like Logistic Regression, LDA, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Boosting, Bagging) to classify good and bad customers (default and non default customers) and use the model to score new customers in future and lend to customers that have a minimum score. Credit scorecards are heavily used in the industry for taking decisions on grating credit, monitoring portfolio, calculating expected loss etc. 2- Build a Stock Price Forecasting Model - These models are used to predict price of a stock or an index for a given time period in future. You can download stock price of any of the publicly listed companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google from Yahoo finance. Such data is known as uni-variate time series data. You can use ARIMA (AR, MA, ARMA, ARIMA) class of models or use Exponential Smoothing models. 3- Portfolio Optimization Problem - Assume you are working as an adviser to a high net worth individual who wants to diversify his 1 million cash in 20 different stocks. How would you advise him? you can find 20 least correlated stocks (that mitigates the risk) using correlation matrix and use optimization algorithms (OR algos) to find out how you would distribute 1million among these 20 different stocks. 4- Segmentation modelling - Financial services are increasingly becoming tailored made. Doing so helps banks in targeting customers in a in a more efficient way. How do banks do so? They use segmentation modelling to cater differently to different segments of customers. You need historical data on customer attributes & data on financial product/services to build a segmentation model. Techniques such as Decision Trees, Clustering are used to build segmentation models. 5- Revenue Forecasting - Revenue forecasting can be done using statistical analysis as well (apart from the conventional accounting practices that companies follow). You can take data for factors affecting revenue of a company or a group of companies for a set of periods of equal interval (monthly, Quarterly, Half year, annual) to build a regression model. make sure you correct for problem of auto-correlation as the data has time series component and the errors are likely to be correlated (that violates assumptions of regression analysis) 6- Pricing Financial Products : You can build models to price financial products such as mortgages, auto loans, credit card transactions etc. (pricing in this case would be charging right interest rate to account for the risk involved, earn profit from the contract and yet be competitive in the market). You can also build models to price forward, future, options, swaps (relatively more complicated though) 7- Prepayment models - Prepayment is a problem in loan contracts for banks. Use loan data to predict customers could potentially prepay. You can build another model in parallel to this to know if a customer prepays, when is he likely to prepay in the life time of the loan (time to prepay). You may also build a model to know how much loss the company would incur if a section of the portfolio of customer prepay in future. 8 - Fraud Model - These models are being used to know if a particular transaction is a fraudulent transaction. Historical data having details of fraud and non-fraud transactions can be used to build a classification model that would predict chances of fraud happening in a transaction. Since we normally have high volume of data, one can try not just relatively simpler models like Logistic Regression or Decision trees but also should try more sophisticated ensemble models. Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) In this lecture, Professor Shiller introduces mean-variance portfolio analysis, as originally outlined by Harry Markowitz, and the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) that has been the cornerstone of modern financial theory. Professor Shiller commences with the history of the first publicly traded company, The United East India Company, founded in 1602. Incorporating also the more recent history of stock markets all over the world, he elaborates on the puzzling size of the equity premium. very high historical return of stock market investments. After introducing the notion of an Efficient Portfolio Frontier, he covers the concept of the Tangency Portfolio, which leads him to the Mutual Fund Theorem. Finally, the consideration of equilibrium in the stock market leads him to the Capital Asset Pricing Model, which emphasizes market risk as the determinant of a stock's return. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Skip Your Bank! These 7 Options Will Make You MUCH More Money.

17:49
Let’s see if this sounds familiar….you have some money sitting in a savings account and it is probably making next to nothing. If you are not really sure what to do, you have several options. 🤔 You can go to a bank and stick it in a savings or money market account, chances are they are not going to pay you anything. If there were, you wouldn’t be watching this video. With that in mind, I want to talk about 7 alternatives to placing you savings into a bank. 🏦 I am also going to share a client story with you about where a client was keeping his cash. (You won’t believe where he was keeping it or how much he was keeping there!) So let's dive right into your options: ➡️ Online savings [1:10] - Any sort of online savings or bank account (just make sure they have FDIC). They have a lot less overhead than traditional brick and mortar - this could mean higher interest rates. ➡️ US Treasuries (TBills) [3:54] - It may seem a little old school - but you can do all of this online. ➡️ High Dividend Stocks [4:42] - This is a little higher risk and not somewhere you want short-term money. Just because a stock pays a dividend doesn’t mean it won’t drop in value. ➡️ Bonds [6:27] - You are most likely not going to buy individual bonds, but rather bond mutual funds. I would suggest ETFs, just remember higher yield = higher risk. ➡️ Blended Portfolio [9:30] - This would be a mix of stocks and bonds, and utilizing ETFs to get this blend. You can utilize a platform like Betterment or Wealthfront. 🤯 Before we get to the last two, I want to tell you about this client ...he had $140,000 in a safe in his basement. I can’t remember how long he had this cash sitting there, but I thought it was crazy. Sitting there, making nothing for him. This is an option that you DO NOT pick.🤯 ➡️ Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) [12:14] - This is a way to invest in real estate without managing properties. You can buy these many different ways, the simplest is to buy a REIT ETF. Another is online real estate investing, my favorite platform for this is Fundrise. ➡️ Peer-To-Peer Lending [14:25] - This allows YOU to be the bank. You are lending money to other peers. The great thing is, you can see their reasons for borrowing. This allows you to set your risk level. That is my top 7 alternatives to bank accounts. You can pick as many or as few of these options as you like. I just wanted to share that there is more than one way to invest and earn interest. Which options sounds the most attractive to you? Are you already using one or more of these options? Let us know how this is going for you. ★☆★Resources Mentioned in Video★☆★ 📉 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/fundrise-youtube-invest-500.php 📉https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/lendingclubinv-youtube-get-started-with-lc.php 📈 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/betterment-youtube-invest-500.php 📉 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/ally-youtube-invest-500.php 📉 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/etrade-youtube-invest-500.php ★☆★ Want More Good Financial Cents? ★☆★ 💻 Check out my blog here: https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/ Listen to my podcast here: 🎙 https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/good-financial-cents-podcast-investing-building-wealth/id775107294?mt=2 Pick up my best selling book, Soldier of Finance, here: 📗 http://amzn.to/2xOH78V Connect with me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jjeffrose My most favorite inspiration T-shirt line, Compete Every Day: 👕 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/compete

Indeed, many organizations are now generating significant portions of their revenues from APIs. Openness, federation and ease of connection of APIs are basic principles for business success in the API economy. Yet adhering to those principles can be difficult considering the sheer number of APIs involved. In this portfolio playbook, we take a look at how EA and IT portfolio management can be used to define, plan, manage and clearly communicate APIs as part of your services portfolio to better manage the complexity of integrated applications inherent with digitalization. Investment Fundamentals: Managing Volatility Through Diversification

02:40
Learn how the investment professionals at American Funds Insurance Series can help investors diversify across a broad mix of stocks, bonds and cash with Asset Allocation Fund. Our seasoned portfolio managers adjust the allocation of the fund’s assets as market conditions change. Asset Allocation Fund is just one example from American Funds of how diversification can help reduce volatility, and its history of long-term growth driven by a diversified investment strategy and attention to risk can make it a good choice for retirement portfolios. Investments are not FDIC-insured, nor are they deposits of or guaranteed by a bank or any other entity, so they may lose value. Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the fund prospectuses and summary prospectuses, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing. Past results are not predictive of results in future periods. The Capital Group companies manage equity assets through three investment groups. These groups make investment and proxy voting decisions independently. Fixed-income investment professionals provide fixed-income research and investment management across the Capital organization; however, for securities with equity characteristics, they act solely on behalf of one of the three equity investment groups. Securities offered through American Funds Distributors, Inc.

Tail Risk Measurement Heuristics by Nassim Nicholas Taleb - One Bank Flagship Seminar

54:45
Date Recorded: Thursday 18 February 2016 Time: 4.15-6pm Venue: Moorgate Auditorium, 20 Moorgate, London Speaker: Professor Nassim Nicholas Taleb The first part of this talk – The Law of Large Numbers in the Real World – presents fat tails, defines them, and shows how the conventional statistics fail to operate in the real world, particularly with econometric variables, for two main reasons: 1) we need a lot, a lot more data for fat tails; and 2) we are going about estimators the wrong way. The second part – Detecting Fragility – presents heuristics to detect fragility in portfolios. Fragility is shown to be ‘anything that is harmed by volatility’. The good news is that while (tail) risk is not measurable, fragility is. Nassim Nicholas Taleb spent 21 years as a risk taker before becoming a researcher in practical, mathematical and philosophical problems with probability. Taleb is the author of a multivolume essay, The Incerto (The Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness, and Antifragile) covering broad facets of uncertainty. It has been translated into 36 languages. In addition to his trader life, Taleb has also published, as a backup of The Incerto, more than 45 scholarly papers in statistical physics, statistics, philosophy, ethics, economics, international affairs, and quantitative finance, all around the notion of risk and probability. He spent time as a professional researcher (Distinguished Professor of Risk Engineering at NYU’s School of Engineering and Dean’s Professor at U. Mass Amherst). His current focus is on the properties of systems that can handle disorder (‘antifragile’). Taleb refuses all honours and anything that ‘turns knowledge into a spectator sport’.
