For weeks, after legislators approved a law capping retail lending rates, the Kenya Bankers Association warned that price controls would restrict lending. August's data from the Central Bank, which indicated that private sector credit growth had fallen to under 6% annual growth, a 4-year low, seemed to bolster their point. However, if data from Equity Bank - the largest in the region by bank accounts - is anything to go by, those claims were way off the mark, as lending has rebounded strongly from mid-September.

The Credit Information Sharing Association of Kenya is seeking to establish a central credit data hub where all financial institutions will submit credit information of their clients. The Association’s chief executive Jared Getenga says this will enable all the three licensed credit reference bureaus access accurate and timely monthly information from financial institutions. Equity Bank and PayPal have announced a partnership that gives Equity Bank the exclusive right to offer PayPal withdraw service in Kenya. The service will make it easier for merchants in Kenya to sell to PayPal's global customer base of more than 137 million active accounts in 193 markets around the world and move the funds to their Equity Bank accounts. Kenya's Equity Bank has reported a 7.25 in net profits for the first half of 2017. The figure has declined on the backdrop of introduction of laws capping interest rates. As a result, net interest income fell 15.5%. Equity's customer base currently stands at 11.7 million backed by internet, agency and mobile banking channels. Announcing the results, Equity Group Chief Executive James Mwangi said he was encouraged that the bank's non-interest income had grown by 20% to $125.9 million to mitigate the reduction. The bank has so far closed 11 of its automated teller machine lobbies in Kenya. It has also sent home at least 200 of its 300 workers in South Sudan following the closure of eight of its branches in the war torn area.
