How to Read, Take Notes On and Understand Journal Articles | Essay Tips

05:33
The first pilot to my Essay Tips series! I share my method for reading and understanding a journal article or paper quickly and efficiently including how to take good, concise notes and remember useful citations. If your method differs from mine or you think you can give me some pointers then let me know in the comments! This is the first in a series of videos I'm hoping to produce while undertaking my PhD at the University of Exeter on tips for students at university or college whether undergraduate, postgraduate or otherwise. Note: The programme to the left (which I highlight in) is Mendeley. Apologies for forgetting to state this in the video!! If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. I generally put out new videos every Tuesday and Friday discussing theatre and playwriting from the perspective of an aspirant and (some might say) emerging playwright, theatre maker and academic. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from his books, DVDs, and speaking directly support NutritionFacts.org). Sci-hub.io was shut down since I recorded this, but the site can currently be reached at https://sci-hub.tw/ and five other domains. Should that one get yanked too (can always see the updated active link list on the Sci-Hub Wikipedia page(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci-Hub)). Links provided for educational purposes only—literally! But wait, isn’t illegal to download “pirated” papers? I explore the controversy in the thrilling conclusion of this two-part video series in Sci-Hub Opens Up a World of Knowledge (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/Sci-Hub-Opens-Up-a-World-of-Knowledge) up next. My research into Sci-Hub came from a whole webinar I did on research techniques, which was captured into an online Continuing Medical Education course through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Check it out at How to be an Evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner (https://www.lifestylemed.education/Course/view/624278). I’m hoping to have a whole series of courses coming soon—stay tuned! Have a question about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-to-access-research-articles-for-free and someone on the NutritionFacts.org team will try to answer it. Academics expose corruption in Grievance Studies

06:35
The first video revealing the behind-the-scenes story of how a trio of concerned left-wing academics (James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian and Helen Pluckrose) published seven intentionally absurd papers in leading scholarly journals in what has become known as 'The Grievance Studies Affair'. I followed Pete, Jim and Helen for almost a year before the project was revealed with this video and an article in the Wall Street Journal. This series is associated with a feature-length documentary I'm working on. My plan is to play around with some of the footage I gather and upload it here to gauge interest and have a creative outlet while I learn about the complicated subject matter. You can follow the story here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLHyNSlsz449SOhzpo7ClMEKe9WkXt5GO My usual sources of film funding are blocked off to me because of the sensitive subject matter and my slow approach. Ethics in Science ; Trends in Research Misconduct on The Rise; Not just an academic issue • Public health is perhaps most at stake when medical research is found to be falsified or fabricated. • A 2011 article in The Journal of Medical Ethics reviewed ~200 papers that were retracted due to questionable data  the published research was tied to 28,000 patients, 6,573 of whom received treatment based on the research presented in the retracted papers (Steen, 2011). http://ncuraregioni.org/uploads/3/3/6/2/3362892/radg_presentation_final.pdf JMBE Profiles with Kari Wester is an interview series that highlights the volunteers that comprise the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education (JMBE) Editorial Board, the authors who contribute their work, and the education innovations that bring them together. In this third episode of the series, Kari sits down with ASM's Publishing Ethics Manager, Erika Davies, to discuss the importance of scientific ethics, responsible conduct of research, and trends in research misconduct. Kari and Erika also discuss resources to help educate members and non-members alike about the importance of scientific integrity. The ASM resources mentioned, including JMBE’s Scientific Ethics section and ASM Press’ "Scientific Integrity" (4th Ed.) textbook and "Perspectives on Research Integrity" monograph, can all be found on ASMscience.org. Information regarding image manipulation can be found at asm.org/images/journals/Files/jrn_sample_images.pdf. JMBE is ASM's premier science education publication that provides original, previously unpublished, peer-reviewed articles that foster scholarly teaching and offers readily adoptable resources in biology education. You can read JMBE online for free at ASMscience.org.
