Business.com - What Is General Liability Insurance and How Much Do I Need?

03:13
http://www.business.com/insurance/ Understand general liability insurance for your small to medium-size business BIO: Tim Gaspar is the owner of Gaspar Insurance Services. TRANSCRIPT: Hello. My name is Tim Gaspar with Gaspar Insurance Services. We insure small and mid-sized businesses and handle their insurance needs. Today I am going to talk a little bit about general liability insurance, what exactly it is, and how much you need as a business owner. Having general liability insurance is the absolute basis of any insurance. I would say that if you could only afford to have one insurance, I think for most businesses general liability would be the insurance they would get. It is the absolute foundation to having your business insurance in place. Essentially, general liability insurance is the protection you have in the event you're responsible, or your business is responsible for causing damage to a person or to property. And this can happen in a number of different ways. One of the most common is with a vehicle accident. Let's say your company trucks gets into an accident. You hit somebody and damage their car, and let's say they get injured. If they file a lawsuit against you, that's covered under your general liability insurance. Along the same lines, let's say you are manufacturing a product of some kind. Let's say for instance that you are a pistachio distributor. If you distribute pistachios and the people that eat them end up getting sick, let's say you get sued in a class action lawsuit for your product hurting somebody. That also falls under your general liability insurance. So as you can see, it can cover a few different scenarios that can be extremely important in protecting your business in the event that a lawsuit like this occurs. Now when it comes to how much general liability insurance you need, there are a couple of things that dictate exactly how much coverage you want to get. For most people, especially when you are first starting out in business, usually this is going to be dictated by your landlord or the vendors that you do business with. When you move into a new place, whether it be an office or retail store or warehouse, generally speaking, your landlord is going to ask for at least one million dollars per occurrence, and two million dollars aggregate just to get started. And what those limits mean is that any single lawsuit or claim that you file, you're going to have one million dollars in coverage for that single occurrence that happens. If you are unlucky enough to have two occurrences in a single year or more, the policy is going to cap out at the aggregate. Another key thing you want to look at in regards to how much insurance you get, is how much your vendors want you to have. Let's say you are a clothing distributor, if you do business with big clothing stores like Nordstrom's for instance, they might require you to four or five million dollars in general liability insurance because they want to make sure that they are protected in the event that something wrong happens with your product. So even if you are a small business, and let's say you don't have a whole lot of assets, you may have to get a lot of coverage just to make the people you do business with satisfied with the type of insurance you have. Now also, in regards to figuring out how much general liability insurance you should have, certainly the limit on your insurance should grow as your business grows. I'm Tim Gaspar with Gaspar insurance for Business.com making sure that you have the right business insurance coverage for the right price. Things to know about general liability: • General liability = basis of any business insurance • It covers damage to persons/property • Often required by landlords or vendors • Make sure the limits grow as your business grows

What is General Liability Insurance?

07:27
General Liability Insurance is something small businesses may need. Often it is requested by a customer (or the company hiring you as a contractor). General liability insurance is designed to cover any loss (damage) that may result from an accident caused by you while you are working in someone else's place of business. Proof of General Liability insurance is conveyed on an "Acord" form. This is a form that they insurance company will make. This is not a form that you get to fill-out. Your customer will want to be listed as a "Certificate Holder". And, they might also ask to be an "Additional Insured". Each Acord form is made individually for each requesting customer (your customer). The insurance premiums will vary widely depending on the type of business. The greater the risk, then the higher the premium. Business General liability insurance is NOT the same as Errors and Omissions insurance. People sometimes get these confused but they are very different things.

Under current law, small businesses with less than the equivalent of fifty full-time workers are not required to offer health insurance, but many do anyway. Small business health insurance is a great choice for any employer that wants to hire and retain the best workers, but small businesses offering coverage tend to fall into three categories: Growing, successful businesses moving up in the world. Businesses with highly skilled workers, and business that are tax savvy. Let’s look at each in more detail. First, there are the growing, successful small businesses that have worked hard and proven themselves. If that’s you, congratulations! You may be ready to reward yourself and your employees with small business health coverage. Second, there are small businesses with skilled workers, even if it’s just a business with one or two employees. If that’s you, you know that when competing with larger companies for skilled workers, offering health coverage may be a necessity. Third, there are small businesses who are financially savvy and who understand the potential savings and tax benefits of offering a group health insurance plan. For example, did you know that small business group coverage may be less expensive than buying coverage on your own? All Up In Yo' Business: LLC or Liability Insurance

03:37
This video is in response to another great question I received from one of my viewers: If I am a sole-proprietor and have a $250,000 liability insurance policy, do I still need to form my business as an LLC? Or in other words, what's the best route to protect my personal liability? An LLC or liability insurance? Now, if you are a lawyer or have ever gone to law school, you will hopefully appreciate this answer. If not, then I am sorry that you can’t be in on the inside joke. But the answer to that question really is: “It Depends.” It depends on a few factors, including the industry that you are going into and whether or not there is a lot of risk of lawsuits and liability within that industry. It also depends on your tolerance for risk. If you are willing to take a higher risk and save a little bit of money and administrative work, then it might be worth it to go one way or the other. One of the primary purposes of forming a business as an LLC is to give yourself that liability protection, so if there is any liability to the business, you as a person and as an individual are protected from that liability. So, let’s pretend that you are operating as a sole proprietor and you haven’t formed an LLC, but you have this $250,000 liability insurance policy. If you do something in the course of your business that opens you up to liability and somebody sues you, then that insurance policy is hopefully going to cover any of your liability. But, if you do something really bad and you are liable for over $250,000 worth of damages, then you will kind of be screwed since your insurance policy is only going to cover you for up to that amount. In this instance, you will be personally liable for anything on top of that amount. If, on the other hand, you formed an LLC, then it will hopefully be only the assets of the business that are at risk for that liability your personal assets will most likely be protected. So unfortunately, I can’t give a definite answer to this question since it depends on multiple factors and on your own tolerance for risk. If the likelihood of you being involved in any type of lawsuit due to your business industry is low (ie., if it’s just not very common businesses in your industry to be involved in any lawsuits), then it might be worth it to just save the money and get that insurance policy and not deal with the hassle of forming and maintaining an LLC. But, if you really want to cover your a**, then the best thing to do is to form that LLC and get that insurance policy. This way, not only would you be personally protected through the LLC, but your LLC would also have that cushion from the insurance policy. Contact Aiden and learn more at www.180lawco.com. Do I need Small Business Insurance?

01:25
Please subscribe to our Youtube channel and receive valuable insurance tips, how to's, and visit our website at http://insurancequotes.com Do You Need Small Business Insurance? If you've just started a small business, it's important to make sure that you are legally and financially protected against risk. Here are three questions you should ask to find out if you need business insurance. 1. Do customers come to your workplace? If customers come to your office, business liability insurance is essential to protect you from a lawsuit if someone gets injured. This is true even if you work from home, since business clients won't be covered through your home or renters insurance policy. 2. Do you have valuable merchandise or equipment? If you own business-related equipment or products, they aren't covered by your home or renters insurance if they get damaged or stolen. You need business property insurance to protect the value of your business assets. 3. Do you have a home-based business? If you have a home-based business, own few business assets, and customers don't come to you, a home insurance business rider may be a solution. This rider may cost about $100 a year for up to $2,500 in property coverage. If you need more, you can purchase an in-home business policy, which covers up to $10,000 for approximately $500 per year. Small Business Insurance

Small Business Insurance http://www.insurancehawks.com If you want your video visible contact http://www.VisibilityIQ.com Are you investigating business insurance for your small business? This video from http://www.VisibilityIq.com gives you a helpful and straightforward run down of all important points to consider when searching for small business insurance policies. It includes concise explanations of mandatory policies such as employers liability insurance and central options to consider such as public liability insurance and business contents insurance. Insurantz.com are specialists in tailored commercial and small business insurance solutions, so whatever business you are in, they can help you find the right insurance policy for your individual business needs first time. Small Busines Insurance While most small businesses are aware of the most common types of insurance, such as property, liability and auto, there are some others that consistently seem to evade many small business owners. These insurance policies will often protect businesses from specific types of loss that can occur. Here are four commonly missed forms of small business insurance that you should consider: • Key Asset Protection: There are many assets that are crucial to the functioning of a successful business, such as computers and printers. Should these assets fail to function, this coverage will pay for the losses that arise when they are broken, lost, or stolen from your business. • Key Employee Insurance: Some small business employees are essential to the functioning of critical business operations. If something happens to any one of these employees, this type of policy will cover their absence and fund recruitment searches for a replacement. • Seasonal Loss Protection: In retail businesses there are many holiday seasons that can prove overwhelmingly disappointing and losses can subsequently skyrocket. Seasonal loss prevention insurance provides extra coverage that can help your business recover from any potential losses that may occur during a disappointing peak season. • Data Insurance: Many businesses consider some of their most valuable assets to be the information they hold. In the event that a computer server is destroyed, it is a good idea to purchase data insurance. Since hackers are often able to break into databases and steal vital information with relative ease, this coverage is becoming increasingly important. While these types of small business insurances are rare, they can prove beneficial to business owners who seek maximum protection against certain types of unfortunate circumstances. What's the Best Health Insurance Plan for Your Small Business?

Most small business owners will say that the best plan is the most affordable one, but there are three main factors that can influence what you’ll pay when picking a new plan. The amount you pay toward employee premiums. The age and health needs of your group, which may affect out of pocket costs. And the type of plan you prefer. Let’s look at each of these in more detail. First, your premium share is the amount the business must pay toward employees’ premiums. Typically, the business must pay at least fifty percent of your employees’ monthly premiums under a small business health plan, though the percentage can vary by state or plan. You’re not generally required to contribute toward the monthly premiums of your employees’ dependents, but some employers do. A second factor that may influence your choice in a plan is the health of your group. How old are your employees? Do they see the doctor frequently? No qualifying employee will be refused insurance or charged more based on his or her medical condition or history, but these factors may still be important when choosing a plan. Understanding how health insurance impacts your employees and their families is important and your employees’ needs should be discussed when shopping for a plan. If your employees see the doctor frequently or use prescription drugs on a regular basis that may affect your choice of a plan. Choosing plans with higher deductibles and copayments may mean a lower monthly premium, but you’ll want to make sure you and your employees can afford that deductible in case you need medical care. Finally, the type of plan you choose can play a factor in your costs. HMO-style plans tend to have smaller networks of doctors and hospitals and so they may cost a bit less than some PPO-style plans that allow you more freedom to choose your doctors. You may also want to consider partially self-funded health plans. With a partially self-funded plan, you set aside a certain amount of money to pay for employee medical costs, but that money may be refunded to you at the end of the year if it’s not used. Work with a licensed health insurance agent to learn more about your coverage options and to get quotes that are tailored to your group’s coverage needs and budget.

Is General Liability Insurance all you need for your business? | Insureon

03:27
Visit http://www.insureon.com/general-liability-insurance/ for more information. Hi, it's Ted Devine from insureon, and today we're gonna go through customer questions. Every single day we get dozens of very sincere and very thoughtful questions from our clients and we want to make sure that we're taking the time to make sure that those are answered. The most important way to do that is talk to our industry professionals so that they can walk you through all the nuances of the covers for your type of industry, which is really important. But, we also want to be able to provide you information that you can access during your free time, because we know what you want to be doing. What I want to be doing is takng time to run our business, and the last thing I want to do is be thinking about insurance. So, we're gonna go through a series of questions, we're gonna call these "quick customer questions." And we're gonna put them in a library so you can access it, so you can go back and review it at your leisure. The first question comes from Mary, who runs a retailer in Illinois. And Mary asks, "Is General Liability Insurance the only coverage I need to run my small business?" And the answer, Mary, is no. General liability is really important particularly for your type of business. What it does is it covers third party losses, meaning claims that customers may have, if a customer comes into the store and slips and falls, and turns around and you've got to cover the cost of the ambulance, and then they sure you for the medical charges related to that. General liability will cover that. It also covers third party claims related to delivery men, if they slip or fall, or suppliers -- people that are not your employees, not yourself, that get hurt or cause property damage inside your store. It will cover that type of insurance risks. But what it won't do is it won't cover several things that are really important. First, it won't cover the property damage just generally inside your store. It won't cover professional advice or cyber liability. So, let's say somebody comes in and hacks the information that you have related to your clients -- general liability will not cover that. It also won't cover the cost of anything that happens to your employees, which is covered by a policy called a Workers' Comp policy that we've talked about in many forms. So general liability. Very important, but it will not cover everything that you need for your store. And it's really important to walk through the following checklist. What we like to do is understand your vertical, so everybody talks to an industry expert that just does your type of business: so, you'd be talking to our hospitality desk that does all restaurants and retailers. And then we walk through what's covered from a property perspective, a general liability perspective, a professional liability perspective, covering your employees, and walk through cyber risk, as well as Business Interruption risk. The good news for you, Mary, is that a lot of those risks are covered inside the base Business Owner's Policy -- a BOP. That'll cover your property and also cover your general liability. And if we have the right endorsement, it'll cover also the Business Interruption covers as well. So, general liability -- important, but clearly not the only thing you should need for your store.

Small business health insurance is coverage bought by small businesses to cover employees and their dependents. There are three things that help distinguish small business health insurance from other types of coverage. They’re made specially for small groups. You can shop for a new plan at any time of year. Employers must make contributions toward employee premiums. Let’s look at each of these in more detail. First, small business health insurance plans are typically tailored for groups of fewer than fifty. Employers with fewer than fifty full-time workers (or the equivalent in part-time workers) are not required to offer coverage to their employees under the ACA. Many small business policies cover groups of fewer than five or ten people. You may even be eligible for small business health coverage if your only employees in the past year were technically 1099 contractors. Depending on the state, the insurance company, and the specific circumstances of your company, those 1099 contractors might count as employees for health insurance purposes. Second, you can purchase coverage at any time of the year. With small business health insurance, you’re not forced to enroll during a special open enrollment period like you may be when buying coverage on your own. Third, with small business health insurance, the business is generally required to pay at least fifty percent of your employees’ monthly health insurance premiums. The exact percentage can vary by state or plan. That said, it’s important to remember that the money you pay toward employee premiums is typically deductible from your business taxes. Check with your accountant or tax advisor if you can save money this way. To learn more about your small group health insurance options today, visit eHealth.com.
