It spans over 60 countries and will cost over a trillion dollars. The plan is to make it easier for the world to trade with China, by funding roads, railways, pipelines, and other infrastructure projects in Asia and Africa. China is loaning trillions of dollars to any country that's willing to participate and it's been a big hit with the less democratic countries in the region. This makes the BRI a risky plan as well. But China is pushing forward because its goals are not strictly economic, they're also geopolitical. To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/29InNBO. “Some of the world’s most intractable social and environmental problems are in need of new solutions. From climate change to resource scarcity to exploding global population growth, the traditional levers of change, including philanthropy and government aid, are insufficient to address the critical issues of our time,” says Fran Seegull. Seegull, Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director for ImpactAssets, says impact investing may be the key to solving global problems. Impact investing is the practice of investing funds for both a financial return and social impact. ImpactAssets is a nonprofit financial services firm that earns fees from managing donor advised funds and other investment products. It also receives grant support, largely to help with its advocacy work for the field of impact investing. The nonprofit has $292 million under management and has 17 employees. It was originally founded under the wings of the Calvert Foundation. Seegull, who earned an MBA at Harvard, describes herself as an entrepreneur. “We see ourselves as impact entrepreneurs at ImpactAssets. ImpactAssets is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the flow of capital to impact investing through innovative product development and field building. I consider myself to be an impact entrepreneur. I have devoted my entire career to creating impact from philanthropy to venture capital to impact investing.” Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/29InNBO. Taiwan''s exports are expected to shrink this year, leading many to forecast economic growth of around 2 percent. While the government says poor economic data is mainly due to international conditions, some believe a more serious industrial transformation is taking place. This factory at the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park produces synthetic leather. Many of its long-term downstream customers have moved away from Taiwan, making business increasingly difficult.Chen Yung-nengXing He Industry GM At the outset, we shouldn’t encourage them to move but to instead upgrade their technology and production. The government hasn’t been very effective in cultivating this industry, so many middle and downstream companies have rushed to Southeast Asia or China to survive. Li Mou-dian Xing He Industry ChairmanWith the domestic market shrinking, downstream manufacturers have left, causing a decline in the demand for synthetic leather. This means we have to dedicate more human resources to developing foreign markets. The latest case indicating Taiwan''s industrial shift is the Formosa Plastics Group, which plans to invest US$15 billion overseas in the next three years. In the past, some 75 percent of this company’s investment was in Taiwan, though this could fall to 20 percent. Kenneth LinNTU Economics Professor In the past, capital that moved overseas was mostly SMEs in the manufacturing industry. Now, it’s big companies with more capital at stake. When the companies move overseas, so do their investments. The central bank chose the anniversary of President Ma Ying-jeou’s seventh term of office to announce that the first quarter of the year saw a record high net outflow of funds.Wang Jiann-chyuan Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research Insurance companies need to generate a fixed rate of 4 percent each year. Taiwan doesn’t have many good financial products, so they invest tens of billions of US dollars overseas, which leads to this account deficit. This is the main reason behind this problem.Taiwan’s failure to keep money in the country is compounded by the fact that foreign investment is also unlikely to be attracted to Taiwan.Wang Jiann-chyuan Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research In 2013, we only attracted foreign direct investment of about US$3.7 billion while Singapore attracted US$63.7 billion. This is a major warning sign. Among Asian countries, our foreign direct investment only surpasses North Korea and Pakistan. In the past, we compared with the United Kingdom, United States, Singapore and South Korea, but now we only compare with Pakistan and North Korea. This indicates that Taiwan''s investment environment is actually getting worse. Taking a tour of this factory, Xing He Industry Chairman Li Mou-dian says the only way to overcome these challenges is innovation.Li Mou-dianXing He Industry ChairmanThis is an example of traditional PVC material. This is our newly developed environmentally friendly TPU material. When you produce PVC, there is a strong smell. TPU is odorless and non-toxic.Li said it took years of research and development to create this environmentally friendly synthetic leather. PVC’s resistance to decomposition as well as the noxious gases it produces when incinerated make it environmentally unfriendly.Li Mou-dian Xing He Industry ChairmanThe most important aspect of TPU is the fact that it’s environmentally friendly. We managed to make it decompose in little more than 10 years. PVC can’t dissolve, so it can last for 10,000 years, leading to many environmental problems. TPU, in addition to conforming with environmental trends, can also resist cold temperatures and is easily malleable, making it preferable to PVC. Despite these advantages, Li faces many problems. Li Mou-dianXing He Industry ChairmanWhen we export to other countries, we face the burden of paying extra tariffs that other countries don’t have to pay. Not being included in some free trade agreements is a hindrance to our business. Wang Jiann-chyuan Chung-Hua Institution for Economic ResearchFirst of all, (Taiwan’s) market is too small. Secondly, there have been too few free trade agreements. Taiwan must find a ways to use TPP and RCEP to gradually increase our reach. Although there are many challenges to overcome in the future, Li hopes that he can do enough to be able to remain in Taiwan.Li Mou-dian Xing He Industry ChairmanI think industries establishing deep roots in Taiwan require consensus on the part of everyone. If future issues are not resolved, it could create a lot of pressure for everyone.Kenneth LinNTU Economics DepartmentThose companies that have remained in Taiwan this long and have continued to survive have pursued a unique development path. I just want to say the government should not ignore these companies. Their ability to endure doesn’t mean they need special care. We spend so much time thinking about creating ...

Officials have said that consumption has become China’s biggest economic engine, but a new dump of economic data counters that view. It seems that China’s economy may be gathering steam again. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Tuesday that factory output in the country picked up pace in the first two months of this year, up 6.3 percent year on the year, beating expectations. The reading is stronger than in December a year ago. CGTN’s Xia Cheng has more. We, at KOYO, have been supporting real estate investment for many years as a special agent of our clients based on our customers’ special demands. We are a professional real estate investment company in Japan. We won the “1st place in Japan in the Building Management Award 2018″ as a result of a national vote sponsored by the Building Management Research Institute, regarding “UENO KOA Building” owned and managed by our company based on the concept of “Neighbor Love”. My name is Ken Nakashima, a Japanese licensed real estate agent in Japan. I am a General Manager of the Tokyo branch of KOYO Inc., licensed Real Estate Broker in California United States, and licensed Mathematics Teacher in Japan. I stayed for a short time in the United States and returned to Japan in 2002 after obtaining a California real estate broker license. Please pay close attention to the Japanese real estate investment information on websites that anyone can view at any time. In the last 15 years, one in three Detroit properties have been foreclosed on. When most people think of foreclosure, they think of people who can’t afford to pay off their mortgages. But in Detroit, it’s often the result of people struggling to pay their property taxes. One big reason is that, in the years after the Great Recession, the city went bankrupt and failed to lower property assessments far enough to account for the impact of the housing crisis. While the value of residents’ homes fell, their taxes remained inordinately high, and tens of thousands of people fell so far behind on their inflated tax bills that the county seized their homes and sold them off at annual auctions. In recent years, the city and county have lowered assessments and offered reduced interest rates to some homeowners. But they have no plans to stop punishing those who were overcharged in the past. VICE News followed this year’s tax foreclosure auction and investigated how the county financially benefits from the process. As Detroit touts its comeback and celebrates its success in climbing out of the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history, many of the city’s residents remain on the brink of displacement. Visiting an orphanage in southern Ethiopia, I enjoyed a tangible look at grassroots development. I saw how caring people in the high-income world empower caring people in the low-income world to invest smartly, within parameters set by the national government, in “human capital” — one of the catchphrases that I’ve picked up as I learn about development issues. In this case, orphans are rescued from the street and nurtured. And at a simple vocational school, young people with an 8th-grade education then learn job skills (metalworking, solar tech, and so on). Upon graduation, they are employed at the nearby Hawassa Industrial Park or are given a microloan by the government to start their own business. Please join me for a minute to experience a joyful example of smart development. __ I’m in Ethiopia to scout locations for a new one-hour special about hunger, airing on public television next fall. You can find out more about my trip at https://blog.ricksteves.com/blog/tag/ethiopia.

Inequality is a big, big subject. There's racial inequality, gender inequality, and lots and lots of other kinds of inequality. This is Econ, so we're going to talk about wealth inequality and income inequality. There's no question that economic inequality is real. But there is disagreement as to whether income inequality is a problem, and what can or should be done about it. *** Crash Course is on Patreon! Why is FDI important? ProfileTree welcomed WAVTEQ Marketing Manager David Gray to not just explain the type of results achieved through this vital aspect of international business but outline his company's global work in this area. David also discussed his marketing experience and passed on some essential advice. He began by explaining WAVTEQ's specialism and their worldwide expertise. "WAVTEQ is the biggest FDI consultancy, data and technology company in the world currently. We have 80 full-time FDI consultants and 16 offices all over the globe. We have offices in the US, Europe, South Korea, India and our technology hub is in Cork. "These offices are strategically placed, so we can target companies who're interested in expanding overseas. "Our main clients are government clients, who we work with to try and attract more foreign investment. We have worked with over 300 government clients from around the globe and have helped them secure over fifty billion worth of Greenfield investment projects since 2014." David went on to describe Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): "Basically it's when a company wants to invest in a foreign location, has business interest in a foreign location and wants to open up there. For example, Baker McKenzie expanded their office here [Northern Ireland] to 150 people." David explained how WAVTEQ deliver successful campaigns for clients around the world, pointing out that their 16 offices around the world are all strategic locations. This means WAVTEQ can meet with clients easily and deliver their FDI services more easily. "We're the leading provider in FDI products, we have a multitude of different products focused around FDI. One of our biggest products would be the incentives monitor as this allows companies to see what incentive packages are being awarded across the globe. They're able to compare different incentives from different regions. "We also have FDI accounting software and are also rolling out a CRM tool for investment promotion agencies. "We created a new tool after the aftermath of Brexit. We created a new tool called UK investment monitor, which tracks where UK companies are expanding domestically. This helps Government agencies and local enterprise partnerships within the UK to see which domestic companies are investing and in which regions." He also outlined some tips and tricks for future marketers and for marketing in 2019. "Any tips I would give to online marketers to succeed would be to be realistic and to set goals and objectives. I think you need to look at throughout the year, are there any big events happening? You can then tailor your marketing efforts around these, make SMART objectives and plan effectively." To discover much more about these subjects see our full video interview.
