Pierre Yves Guegan Head of Digital Channels at Unicredit started his presentation of saying that Unicredit started its cooperation with Meniga one year ago. Pierre is optimistic that the banks will continue to be relevant in the market. Banks are investing a lot in innovation and transforming themselves. He pointed out that Unicredit is working hard to work with customers to create the solutions they want, with an emphasis on understanding the needs of young people. Unicredit learns a lot from UX and UI testing. But the bank goes beyond that. It is even experimenting with using neuroscience to evaluate customer reactions to new features of apps and services. The bank has a partnership with Meniga and according to Pierre Meniga has helped Unicredit to think differently and be more focused on its customers. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Vittorio Santoro, vox pop: "(commenting on the suspension of the Unicredit shares and the stability of the bank) The situation is certainly not the best, especially when these things happen. Clearly it is a general, global situation. Let's hope the government helps us. Monti is hitting us hard but we have hope, at least for our children. But having to pay the price ourselves for those many others who came before us, quite frankly, doesn't make me feel good." 5. Close of signage for Unicredit Banca 6. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Antonio Petrangeli, vox pop: "Unicredit is the second most important bank in Italy so if they suspend the shares on the stock market after they fell to low levels, you begin to doubt whether what they tell us in the newspapers is true. Because they give us a message every day to stay calm, to not worry, then these things happen and one asks what is the truth?" 7. Close of people entering Unicredit bank through automatic door 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Beppe Severgnini, Italian journalist and author: "We know that 'spread' (the Italian word for the Italo-German borrowing costs benchmark) also means that investors abroad don't trust us as much as they did, and so it's for us to prove them that we can pay our debt. Basically, that's all about the 'spread', this is (all it means). We will be able to do it, if we don't it means Italy is out of the euro, probably the euro is over. Maybe the European Union as we know it is over and it would be such a disaster for everybody, including the United States, and really that is a kind of dragon that we have to fear, not the little 'spread'." 9. Mid of office of ADVICORP investment bank in Rome 10. Close of monitor showing spread 11. Wide of monitors 12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Marco Maximilian Elser, ADVICORP investment bank in Rome: "Personally, I think a lot of this is unwarranted. Today, and the last three weeks have been great buying opportunities for Italian debt. Italy is not going to default, Italy is not going to go bankrupt." 13. Close of monitor with announcement of Unicredit suspending trading on its shares 14. Close of today's Unicredit trading 15. Close of Monitor showing spread 16. Close of Monitor with numbers on Italain-German benchmark STORYLINE Shares in UniCredit were briefly suspended from trading Monday on the Milan stock exchange due to excessive volatility, as Italy's biggest bank launched a capital increase. The bank has lost nearly half of its market value in recent days after announcing it was seeking to raise 7.5 (b) billion Euros(9.7 (b) billion U.S. Dollars) at a massive discount to the prevailing share price. The bank last week set the price for the rights at 1.943 euros, which represented a 69 percent discount over the previous day's close. Shareholders can buy the new shares through until 27 January. Shares resumed trading at midday with their price down 8.3 percent at 2.40 euros. Feelings at street level were low. "Monti is hitting us hard but we have hope, at least for our children. But having to pay the price ourselves for those many others who came before us, quite frankly, doesn't make me feel good," said Vittorio Santoro. Banks are an integral part of Europe's debt crisis because they hold government bonds. A default or steep fall in the value of government bonds could inflict heavy losses on banks and choke off credit to the European economy. That's why the regulatory authorities want Europe's banks to raise their buffers by 115 (b) billion euros (146 (b) billion U.S. Dollars) over the next few months.
