I'm Sara Gomez and I'm the Director of HR Business Partnering in Direct Line Group. I'm responsible for a team of HR business partners and local HR advisors and our role and how we fit in the organisation is to understand what the business needs are. So our job is to know what capability of people we need, both now and in the future and then make sure we help the business to get those people. And then the other side to that is to understand what engagement challenges each business area has got. So, what we need to do to help people feel engaged in the work that we're asking them to do so they're willing to deliver the business strategy. A typical day is that it's always going to be varied, the job we have is to work with the business, work with out HR colleagues. So at the Hr Directors meetings I have to represent the voice of the business and I need to represent HR back out into the business all through my team in Business Partnering, so our World, is very much one where we are meeting people and talking. As we've got our new name as a company has been the best time ever. I've been part of a fantastic set up of building a new HR function. About two years ago we were recruiting for business partners and we were talking about "Join if you want a helter skelter ride, if you want a real roller coaster of excitement and real learning" and so, that's been the best thing really, that's been my absolute highlight. I've learnt lots about myself, about how I respond to extreme pressure and actually getting a few, hard nudges from people so I've learned that way. And I've learnt, because I've seen how we have launched the values in Direct Line Group and what they mean, and I've seen how we did that through our employees. It wasn't just people going off to a lovely hotel and writing them, it was really done with our employees and has been absolutely lead by that, and I've learned about that, I think I've learned a lot about what its like to work in an organisation that doesn't want to be hierarchical. So I've definitely changed personally through it as well. I think everything is there for the taking at the moment, we are a newly formed company, and really its building, so, for now, I've got a job I'm delighted to be in, it's two weeks in, so for the very near future I'm going to be in there, but, to be honest, there's so much you can do in this organisation, you can move around the specialisms if you've got transferable skills, which we've all got in some form or another. I think the opportunities are there so, who knows, who knows, where I might be in the future.

So, the first thing on the radar of the HRM team should be the key people measures from the organization’s scorecard. • The second class of measures should be the HRM measures – the key drivers that HR guides or controls that directly influence the key people measures. • Becker et al (2001), define the four essential elements of the HR scorecard as HR deliverables, a high-performance work system, HR system alignment and HR efficiency. This reflects a balance between the twin HR imperatives that have been previously mentioned – cost cutting and value creation. • These last three elements of the HR architecture trace a value chain from function to systems to employee behaviours. 12.
