Golden Veroleum Liberia Palm Oil Deforestation

00:20
In 2013 we took a drive through the Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) Wakefield Nursery in Sinoe county, Liberia. Here is what we saw. Several years of fieldwork by the Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) and civil society partners in Liberia has revealed the extent to which palm oil company Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) and its lead investor Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) are continuing to operate without the free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) of local communities within their concession area, despite the companies’ claims to have learned from past mistakes. The report ‘Hollow Promises: An FPIC assessment of Golden Veroleum and Golden Agri-Resource’s palm oil project in Liberia’ reveals how the companies have caused community division and conflict, have profoundly misled communities who have little or no access to independent legal advice, and have benefited from local government coercion and intimidation of communities, with a variety of poor socio-economic and cultural outcomes evident. Eyes on the forest: the reality of the palm oil industry | WWF-Singapore

01:57
Is your breakfast cereal illegal? For the first time - it's possible to tell. The latest Eyes on the Forest report is the first time that we have been able to establish the link between global consumer brands (Kellogg's, Colgate, Nestle etc) and the plantations they source palm oil from, via the world's 'Big 4' traders: Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) Apical, Wilmar, Musim Mas and Sinar Mas (Golden Agri Resources). It highlights the biggest loophole/gap the entire palm oil industry faces today: need for transparency between plantation and mills.

PT. Tualang Raya Continues To Destroy Elephant Habitat In Breach of Moratorium

01:01
PT. Tulalang Raya is not currently selling palm oil fruits, but it intends to in the future. The biggest buyers from the region––Wilmar, Golden Agri Resources, Musim Mas––must adopt a permanent no buy policy from this company given its ongoing breach of their “No Deforestation” policies and work with governments and communities to deliver the protection of the lowland rainforests of the Leuser Ecosystem. Major brands including PepsiCo continue to drive this senseless destruction of rainforests for Conflict Palm Oil. All brands must enforce a moratorium on forest destruction in their supply chains, including all palm oil refineries sourcing from the Leuser Ecosystem.

Oil Palm BMP - Mature Stage

31:46
The International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) is a not-for-profit, science-based organization dedicated to responsible management of plant nutrition for the benefit of the human family. As a global organization, IPNI has initiatives addressing the world's growing need for food, fuel, fiber, and feed. Best Management Practices (BMP) for nutrient stewardship encourage the concept of applying the right product, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place. Agriculture in South Asia and Southeast Asia regions is under extreme pressure to deliver unprecedented productivity to meet demand, while facing increasing pressures for land and water resources from other sectors. In Southeast Asia both subsistence and plantation crops are seeing sustained price increases. These are anticipated to continue for at least the medium term. In both cases, agricultural growth must be contained within the same ecological footprint. Land is not available for expansion in many areas. Even where it is, society demands that agriculture should not take more land but improve productivity to produce more from the same or less land and water resources. The only option is to intensify production and this seems easily achievable through the more intelligent use of existing technologies, and specifically so, plant nutrition - yields and efficiency of plantations is far from the potential and highly patchy. The goal is therefore to support intensification of oil palm plantation agriculture, which enables it to produce more while not increasing its ecological footprint, or reducing it where and when required. IPNI has worked in close partnership with oil palm practitioners to conduct oil palm management research. The essential knowledge generated is shared and distributed via the IPNI Oil Palm Series of field handbooks, pocket guides, books and posters. For more info, visit http://info.ipni.net/oilpalm (This video production was made possible through the generous support of Belarusian Potash Company SRO and K+S KALI GmbH.
