GMAT AWA: HOW I GOT READY IN 2 HOURS (700+)

09:55
GMAT AWA is the easiest part of GMAT. In this video I'll give you template that will help you prepare for GMAT essay in 2 hours. Best GMAT tutor ever! Scored 780 out of 800 - https://goo.gl/d59Hfm Books that will help you prepare: 1. GMAT Official Guide - http://amzn.to/2cBrEiJ. Use it for a list of questions that you can encounter on GMAT, including essay topics. This one is a MUST HAVE! 2. Kaplan GMAT Practice Tests - http://amzn.to/2c8bL20. Take them at home. The average of the last three practice tests would give you an idea of how much you could score during GMAT. 3. GMAT Tutor - https://goo.gl/I3Bs15. Scored 780 out of 800 on GMAT. Helped me a lot! In this GMAT AWA video, I am giving sample answer to this text: The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper. “This past winter, 200 students from Waymarsh State College traveled to the state capitol building to protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. The other 12,000 Waymarsh students evidently weren’t so concerned about their education: they either stayed on campus or left for winter break. Since the group who did not protest is far more numerous, it is more representative of the state’s college students than are the protesters. Therefore the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc. This is what I write as an answer: The argument claims that the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students since the group who did not pretest is far more numerous. The conclusion of the argument is based on the premise that 12000 Waymarsh students who did not protest were not so concerned about their education. The conclusion of the argument relies on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence. Hence, the argument is unconvincing and has several flaws. First, the argument readily assumes that the students, who have not taken part in the protest were not concerned about their education. However, it fails to mention other factors, which could affect students’ decision concerning the participation in the protest. For example, 200 students that have travelled to the state capital building could have been appointed as other students’ representatives. The author fails to mention the laws that regulate protests. The legal number of people taking part in the protest might have been limited in compliance with these laws. Second, the argument could have been much clearer if it provided information on any other similar protests aroused by proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. In fact, it is not at all clear if similar actions also were also taken by students of other colleges affected by proposed cuts. Finally, the argument fails to mention one of the key factors, on basis of which it could be evaluated, namely if any of 1200 students who haven’t taken part in the protest are enrolled in the programs which would be affected should the cuts take place. Without this information, the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate. GMAT Tuesday: AWA - Should You Use First Person?

01:17
This week, I’m coming to you from Arroyo Seco – a stunning campground in Salinas, CA – to answer a very important GMAT essay question: should you use the first person in your argument essay? In the argument essay you want to make it clear that you're talking about facts, and show that you have an objective point of view. The more you can do this, the better! Therefore, it's best to say away from using the first person in your essay. You should avoid statements like "I think" and "I believe." These will make your essay sound less objective! Keep in mind that the point of this essay is to break down an argument, not to give you opinion. So there's no need to use the first person! After you’ve watched the video, feel free to leave me any comments or questions you have below. Be excellent to the universe! :D Learn more about GMAT AWA here: http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/gmat-awa-strategies/ Check out hundreds of practice questions and video lessons to help you prep for the GMAT at http://gmat.magoosh.com

GMAT Tuesday: Common AWA Flaws - Inappropriate Comparisons

04:31
Today, we take on argument flaws! The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) for the GMAT presents you with an argument that contains multiple flaws. There are a handful of argument flaws that appear in these arguments time and time again. Knowing these common flaws, how to identify them, and what to do when you see them will help you to move through the writing assessment with ease. In this video we'll be looking at inappropriate comparisons. Even if the prompt only mentions similarities, that doesn't mean there aren't differences! By detailing these differences, we can cast doubt on the conclusion. In the video, we look at an example prompt, which you can find in the PDF of sample prompts on the mba.com website. Here's a link to the page where you can download the example prompts (http://www.mba.com/us/the-gmat-exam/gmat-exam-format-timing/analytical-writing-assessment/analysis-of-an-argument.aspx). GMAT Tuesday: Common Flaws in AWA - Sampling Error

04:44
When attacking the argument for the writing section of the GMAT, it's important to be versed in the many common errors that pop up. This week we look at sampling errors. Today you'll learn how to spot sampling errors in GMAT AWA arguments, and you'll also learn how you can attack those errors. It's important to know that many times the survey isn't representative of a given group, or the result of a survey of one group may have been erroneously applied to another group! I'll take you through an actual GMAT AWA argument to show how you can spot this flaw and use it to your advantage on test day. GMAT Tuesday: Common Flaws in AWA - Errors in Causality

04:45
Correlation does not equal causation! Undoubtedly you've heard one of your teachers say that before. In this episode of GMAT Tuesdays, you'll learn how to spot causality flaws in the AWA section, one of the most common flaws in AWA arguments. Once you hone your skills for identifying errors in causality, you will see it everywhere, and not just on the GMAT! It's one of the most common errors that humans make. We are really bad at understanding the relationship of events, actions, and results. That doesn't mean we can't learn to be better! After I finish up my last life, I will show you not only how to spot this error, but will walk you through how to find such a flaw with an example GMAT argument.
