Cedi Continues To Lose Value
The cedi has been losing grounds for the past couple of weeks against some major trading currencies especially the dollar. The development has become a bother to traders and forex bureau operators in Accra. They attribute the drop in the value of the cedi to the fall in supply of foreign currencies on the market. They were however upbeat that if the IMF bailout comes on stream as expected it will ease the pressure on the local currency. The cedi in 2014 lost about 40 percent in value to the dollar.

The cedi has depreciated marginally recording a slow performance on the inter-bank market beginning January 2015. Some analysts have blamed the situation on the growing demand for the US dollar on the international market and other external factors.

Dollar Transactions Limited In Ghana
Ghana has defended its decision to limit foreign exchange withdrawals in a bid to halt the slide in its currency the cedi. Foreign currency account holders have been limited to withdrawals of $10,000 (£6,000), which must be supported by evidence of an overseas trip. The cedi has fallen to a record low in recent days. Central Bank governor Kofi Wampah has also raised interest rates to 18% to attract more investment. Ghana is the latest emerging markets whose currency has fallen recently. The value of the South African rand has hit record lows, while currencies in Turkey and India have also been hit. I command the resurrection of the cedi" Archbishop Duncan Williams Action Faith Chapel Analysts say investors have switched away from emerging markets since the US Federal Reserve scaled back its stimulus programme. Ghana has also been hit by falls in the prices of its two major exports - gold and cocoa. The cedi has lost about 23% of its value over the past year. Government critics say the problems have been exacerbated by high public spending and mismanagement - charges the government denies. It has started to earn money from offshore oil fields but analysts say much of this is being used to repay foreign loans. The BBC's Sammy Darko in the capital Accra says the freefall of the cedi has led to desperate measures by government and even some of the clergy. Last week, renowned cleric Archbishop Duncan Williams prayed for the national currency to start rising in value. "I command the resurrection of the cedi," he told worshippers at his Action Faith Chapel in Accra. Our correspondent says many Ghanaians are concerned about price rises, which will be made worse by Thursday's interest rate hike. In addition to the limit of foreign exchange withdrawals, Mr Wampah said banks would not be allowed to grant loans in foreign currencies to customers who are only paid in cedis. "The main purpose of this regulation is to ensure that we continue to use the cedi as the legal tender," he said. But one forex trader in Accra told our reporter that the limit would not be effective. "If someone brings in $20,000 to change, who would turn it down?" asked the trader, who wished to remain anonymous. But Mr Wampah warned forex traders they had to follow the new rules or be "dealt with". "For the forex bureaux, the issues are bordering on anti money-laundering... Ghana was black listed in 2012 because of our laxity." "We also require more identification when purchasing or selling to forex bureaux and we also request them to computerise so that it will be easier for our supervisors to verify what they are doing." He said plain clothes inspectors would be sent to check on the bureaux.

Ghana cedi
The Ghana cedi (currency sign: GH₵; currency code: GHS) is the unit of currency of Ghana. The new Ghana cedi was introduced on 1 July 2007 at a rate equal to 10,000 old cedis. It was the highest-valued currency unit issued by sovereign countries in Africa in 2007. One Ghana cedi is divided into one hundred Ghana pesewas (Gp). A number of Ghanaian coins have also been issued in "sika" denominations. These are probably best considered as "medallic" coinage, and may have no legal tender status. The word sika means "money". Ghana CEDI at Record Low
Ghana's currency, the Cedi, weakened to an all time low against the dollar on Monday as demand for the greenback by local firms heavily outstripped supply. The local unit fell to 1.975 versus the dollar, lower than last Friday's close of 1.970. The Ghanian unit has been the worst performing west African currency so far this year, falling by as much as 3.3% and worsening the country's inflation outlook. The Central bank has previously been forced to intervene by boosting sales of treasury bills as part of effortst to mop up Cedis from the market. Last week however, the bank said that the decline was seasonal and that the bank would only intervene if if deemed it necessary.

Ghana Cedi depreciation affects ailing economy
Ghana’s local currency, the Cedi, neared 4 % depreciation to the US Dollar on Tuesday as demand by importers continued to rise. The local currency declined in value by 0.4 to the American currency in the preceding week. Recent protests in Ghana against worsening living conditions attacked the depreciation of the Cedi, citing it as a contributor to the country’s ailing economy. Eunice Agyare has more.
