WEBINAR: Liberating Service Learning featuring Randy Stoecker
Liberating Service Learning featuring Randy Stoecker, University of Wisconsin-Madison “Institutionalized service learning,” has its priorities reversed. It starts by focusing on student learning, then on “service,” then on “community” and only then on any kind of social change. In “liberating service learning” I reverse that prioritization to start with change, then community, then “service” and finally learning, and also develop new philosophical foundations and practices for each concept. This webinar will show the problems with the institutionalized service learning and the potential of liberating service learning. 5/15/17 Webinar hosted by California Campus Compact, Campus Compact of the Mountain West and Utah Campus Compact
Service Learning: Fostering Citizenship and Democracy
Service learning programs provide participants opportunities to apply their skills and education to community-level issues. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) incorporates service learning in a variety of programs, from our university courses in Georgia to democracy camps in the Maldives. For International Youth Day we are highlighting benefits and challenges of service learning. International Youth day was established by the United Nations to raise awareness of issues affecting young people. Building strong community bonds and a sense of citizenship is critical to youth engagement. IFES partners with civil society organizations and educational institutions around the world to integrate service learning into our youth programs. For this podcast IFES Youth Adviser Augusta Featherston spoke with her counterpart Susan Stroud, Executive Director of Innovations in Civic Participation, about service learning trends and how it can foster the foundations of democracy. Ms. Stroud was instrumental in the creation of the U.S.’ AmeriCorps program and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Webinar 16: “Service Learning course design to facilitate intercultural learning"
Service learning is a particularly effective teaching approach for educators to immerse students in situations and settings that readily tap into both the local and global dimensions of social issues (Bringle, Hatcher, and Jones 2011). Use of service learning and related community-engaged learning methods has increased in recent years in the U.S and abroad. Through curriculum internationalization and community-engaged learning strategies, faculty are increasingly experimenting with course designs that challenge college students to: Conceptualize local and global interconnectedness of contemporary social issues [aka. Globalization], Develop technical, analytical, and communication skills, and Examine their responsibilities as citizens of communities of shifting scales and affinities. Civic outcomes, therefore, include not only an understanding of how to, and the conditions under which, one can make a difference through voluntary action, advocacy, and public policy, but also how to navigate boundaries of cultural difference. In this framework, cultivating intercultural competence is a critical element of instructional design practice shared by both international and civic engagement educators (Deardorff 2011).

Service Learning (1)
Volunteerism High schools require it; community organizations desperately need it; and here at Montgomery College students, faculty and staff are giving back and gaining some experience and knowledge in the process. On this new episode of Campus Conversations we explore how some Montgomery College faculty have integrated service learning activities into their coursework, giving students the opportunity to bring what they are learning in the classroom out into the community. Hosts Fritzi Bodenheimer and Marcus Rosano discuss the concept of service learning with one of our Service Learning Coordinators; talk to faculty and students about their service learning projects; and visit the Germantown Campus to hear about an alternative spring break program that took students and staff to Mississippi to help rebuild a community damaged in during Hurricane Katrina. This episode also examines how the Montgomery County Volunteer Center helps to match people with organizations in need of volunteers.
