Useful Language Learning Techniques - Conversation Exchange
Visit https://www.LingQ.com My Blog: http://blog.thelinguist.com/ My Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/lingosteve My Twitter: https://twitter.com/lingosteve Follow the new LingQ channel: https://goo.gl/WVnzRS Follow "Steve's Cafe" Channel: http://www.youtube.com/c/SteveKaufmann Transcript: Hi there, Steve Kaufmann. Today I want to talk about conversation exchanges and language exchanges via the internet. It’s something available to us today that wasn’t available when I started learning languages. It’s amazing. By the way, do you like my Japanese T-shirt? We had a team of Old Timer Hockey players from Japan visit with us and we all got a nice T-shirt. When I think back 50 years ago when I was studying Chinese the idea that I could just get online and talk to someone through some magic computer, I mean can you imagine? Fifty years ago it was just inconceivable that you could do this and nowadays there are a number of sites which offer the opportunity to connect with teachers. Some are free; in other words, just a pure language exchange or conversation exchange. Some of them you hire a teacher or someone to speak to. I can only talk about my experience which is limited to italki, which I have found to be very good. We have a similar function at LingQ, but we don’t have as many tutors as italki. In many ways, I don’t think we do it as well. Some parts of it I think we do better, but when I can find a tutor at LingQ I use a tutor at LingQ otherwise I’ll go to italki. The idea that you can connect with people anywhere in the world who speak the language that you’re speaking, wow! Some words of caution. Personally, and I’ve said this before, until I have a certain level in the language I don’t enjoy the language exchange or conversation exchange because I want to make sure what the person is saying. That’s absolutely number one. Even if I can’t express myself well, I want to understand what the other person is saying and (B) I want to be able to say something in the language because it actually is quite stressful. Even when we’re speaking well, it’s a more stressful way to communicate with someone than sitting with them across a table. It is more stressful. I find that it’s a little bit more exhausting. I should say I have been speaking now. I’ve started speaking with a Ukrainian tutor twice a week and I still have my Russian tutor that I speak to and at the end of an hour I’m kind of exhausted. Now, in order to speak for an hour you have to be at a certain level. Very often, I’ll start at 15 minutes or half an hour and then as I progress I’ll get up to an hour. As I say, it is a little bit stressful, but it’s certainly something to do. Even though I’m a proponent of input-based learning and I’ve spent most of my time and I still do. For example, with my Ukrainian I speak two hours a week, but I’m constantly reading. I’m reading now on Ukrainian history, listening to Ukrainian history, listening to Hora Más Que radio. So input is king, but the output is necessary and these conversation exchange and language exchange sites like italki and what we have at LingQ are a very good way of getting that output experience. As an example of how that works, I’m going to follow this up with a video where I spoke to someone from Russia who commented on one of my YouTube videos that he’s learning Japanese and could we talk a bit about learning Japanese. So what follows here is a separate video. It’s quite long because it’s very difficult to keep these things short, but we speak in three languages, English, Russian and Japanese and we talk, mostly, about learning Japanese. The first 12-13 minutes are in English, then another seven-eight or however many minutes in Russian and we end up in Japanese. What is very interesting in this video, if you have the patience to follow it, is I’ve been speaking Ukrainian and mostly listening to Ukrainian, then I had an hour of Russian with my Russian tutor, this then was followed by speaking to this Denny in Moscow and even though my Japanese is stronger than my Russian I couldn’t get my brain out of Russian. I really struggled to switch over to Japanese and it’s the first time I’ve had that difficulty. Normally, I can move quite easily. Maybe it’s because I’d just had that hour of Russian beforehand and because I find the language exchange via Skype on the computer is a little more stressful than just a casual conversation. I will be interested in hearing from you, bye for now.

Tobias Dickmeis - The Potentials and Pitfalls of Language Exchange
A language exchange according to the Tandem method is a meeting of two partners who are learning each other's native languages. They get together and split their time between speaking the two languages. It is particularly efficient towards improving verbal proficiency and achieving fluency. For a long time the method has been practiced almost exclusively at universities with an international student body. It usually required going down a somewhat cumbersome route to find a partner, like posting to bulletin boards. Thanks to mobile apps that make it easier to find a partner and meet online in video chats, the method is on the rise, having found itself propelled from the offline into the online world, and from universities to everyone with a smartphone. Tandem (www.tandem.net) is such an app, named after the Tandem method. HiNative: Global Q&A Language Exchange App Review!
안녕하세용~! Download and check out HiNative for yourself!! Android: https://goo.gl/T8EVLe iOS: https://goo.gl/Eb05vr Web: https://hinative.com Premium: https://hinative.com/premium This week I decided to review a very useful app, which can help you get comfortable with not only Korean but many other languages! This app is called HiNative and it is a global Q&A language exchange service available in over 120 languages! Overall I was very satisfied with this app and I'm quite certain I'll be using it in the future when it comes to deciphering slang words or obscure phrases. *Apparently the ticket feature is only available for those who purchase the premium version. Just found that out :) P. S. Sorry for not uploading a cover this Monday! Those of you who watch Eurovision, please anticipate a few Eurovision covers coming your way in the upcoming weeks. I’ve been listening to some of my favourite Eurovision songs and I didn’t manage to learn them in time for this Monday, sowwy ^^ This is a sponsored video, but all opinions and thoughts are 100% my own :) Facebook: http://goo.gl/hAA5aD Twitter: http://twitter.com/Mangorrita Instagram: http://instagram.com/mangorrrita SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/mangorrrita Tumblr: http://goo.gl/LfyXT7

The dating game can be tough here with the language and cultural barriers, so we thought we’d let all of you in on some different ways that we have heard worked for many people here. Of course there are plenty of ways to randomly find a date, but these are probably the most popular options that foreigners have at their disposal in Korea. And this goes for meeting not all only Korean guys, but foreign guys as well. ❤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mixxer App Promotion
What is it? The Mixxer app was created by two students at Dickinson College and is designed to help you find a language partner for a language exchange. A language partner is someone who helps you practice their native language in exchange for you helping them with yours. For example, if you’re a native English speaker learning Spanish, the Mixxer will help you find and connect with a native Spanish speaker learning English. Once you’ve found some potential partners, you can message them on the Mixxer suggesting days and times to meet. Most people use Skype to speak, but the choice is up to you and your partner. There are no “rules” for the exchange, but I would suggest practicing 30 minutes in each language. The important thing is to be sure that each person is allowed equal time to practice. In addition to speaking, you can also post writing and receive feedback from native speakers. If you do this, please return the favor and correct someone else’s writing in your native language. Finally, if you’re a native speaker of Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, French or German you’ll also receive invitations from our school and others to register to join us for an “event”. An event is a way of connecting Mixxer users with students in a classroom. After you create an account on the Mixxer, you will receive periodic emails with a link to register to speak with a student at a certain day and time. Those who register then chat the instructor on Skype 10 minutes before the event. The instructor then matches each Mixxer user with one of their students for that class hour. If you’re a teacher with access to a computer lab and interested in organizing your own event, please contact me at [email protected] How is this Free? No ads? ************************************************ True. It’s entirely free, there are no ads, and there is no paid version. This app was created by our students and hosted by our school. We use the app and the website (www.language-exchanges.org) to find partners for our own students as part of their language courses. What if I’m a beginner? ************************************************ A language exchange is usually 30 minutes of conversation in each language. That’s going to be pretty tough if you’re an absolute beginner. Though it’s possible sooner than you probably think. Our students studying Japanese have their first exchange after two months of classes. To help them, everyone writes down 25-30 conversation questions in advance. If you’re worried about keeping the conversation going, I would suggest doing the same. Contact us ************************************************* Please send your suggestions and comments to: [email protected] Follow us: Twitter: https://twitter.com/MixxerSite Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MixxerSite/
