http://www.lowitja.org.au SCRIPT: Each person possesses knowledge. This is made up of facts, feelings, ideas, thoughts, experiences, interpretations, and stories. When people come together they share their knowledge. Sometimes this is the same. Sometimes this is similar. Sometimes this is different. Sometimes no one knows. When it is not the same or when no one knows this is where research can help. The researcher is a facilitator and collector of information, and synthesiser and translator of this information. The researcher is influenced by their own knowledge. The researcher utilises three things: (1) Fellow researchers, experts (2) Previous research (3) Stakeholders Stakeholders can include: (1) Decision makers (2) The Community of interest (3) The general public The impact of research can be negatively influenced by bias, politics, power and fear. It can also be negatively impacted up on by poorly interpreted data, poorly constructed methodology. How do we find the truth and avoid the negative influences? One approach is knowledge exchange -- the process of creating new knowledge. This is where new knowledge is created. Dr Marika describes this formation of new knowledge as Ganma. Ganma is the name of a lagoon where saltwater meets fresh water. Water is a symbol of knowledge in Yolngu philosophy and the metaphor for the meeting of two bodies of water is a way to talking about knowledge systems of two cultures working together. DIFFERENT VOICE: "A river of water from the sea and a river of water from the land mutually engulf each other upon flowing into a common lagoon and becoming one. In coming together, the streams of water mix across the interface of the two currents and foam is created. This foam represents a new kind of knowledge. The forces of the stream combine and lead to deeper understanding and truth. Essential, Ganma is a place where knowledge is (re)created" Water like knowledge has memory. When two different waters meet to create Ganma, they diffuse into each other, but they do not forget who they are or where they come from. Using this metaphor, people from differing cultures and backgrounds can share deeply, without losing their history or integrity.

Researchers who want to see their research make a difference appreciate that publication alone is rarely sufficient to improve health outcomes. They see the value in building relationships with research users (e.g. consumer representatives, practitioners and policy makers) from the outset. They understand that fostering this process of knowledge exchange has the benefit of allowing real world knowledge to inform research directions as well as facilitate dissemination and implementation. In this video, Dr Christina Hagger, PHCRIS Senior Research Fellow and Knowledge Exchange Manager gives an overview of knowledge exchange and why it is important. When there are problems with the exchange of knowledge in an organization, these cannot be solved by simply using new technologies. Instead, the individual and organizational framework conditions are much more important – meaning the techniques When there are problems with the exchange of knowledge in an organization, these cannot be solved by simply using new technologies. Instead, the much more crucial individual and organizational framework conditions must be properly designed, properly introduced and properly used. This short film explains what this entails. Many in the agricultural retail industry are transfixed by the rapid development of e-commerce start-ups in the space. Two hyperbolic claims illustrate the debate around the future of e-commerce in ag retail: 1. The likes of FBN, AgVend, Agroy, and other online ag retail websites are nothing to worry about. 2. E-commerce will be the death of traditional ag retailers. While the discussion about online ag retail can often devolve into an “either-or” choice between these claims, the future of traditional ag retailers is more nuanced and lies somewhere in between. Online competition will continue to grow and pressure margins for traditional ag retailers in the years ahead. Amid this digital disruption, many brick-and-mortar ag retailers will adapt to survive and thrive. Dorothea Elizabeth Davis was a life-long resident of Willoughby and Lake County. Dorothea became known as the "sheep-lady", a name she loathed, because she had a working sheep farm in the midst of a growing city. She loved her sheep and saw herself as a servant of God and believed that she was charged with the duty of keeping the land pure in the traditions of the ancients. She was probably the most misunderstood woman in the community because no one took the time to look beyond the eccentricity and myth to see the educated and talented woman she actually was. Nancymarie Phillips helped Dorothea with her sheep farm for 8 years and she asked Nancymarie to take on the task as her official biographer -- naming her own story, Song of the Shepherdess. Dorothea was a lover of history and she knew that her existence was a large part of the history of Lake County. The lessons Nancymarie learned from Dorothea will be with her for the rest of her life. Brazil and Mozambique are both countries under the Forest Investment Program. They share similar types of forests – the Miombo in Mozambique and the Cerrado in Brazil – and a common challenge: how to ensure forests contribute to rural livelihoods. Specialists from both countries met to exchange knowledge, ideas and best practices in sustainable forest management and to learn how to empower forest communities in the Cerrado and Miombo forests.

Shade grown coffee has been identified as an important land management practice that provides multiple environmental and social benefits. A polyculture system promotes a more efficient use of resources, food security and improved livelihoods. It also has the potential to generate additional benefits besides coffee production such as timber, fruit production, fuelwood, medicinal plants, adaptation to climate change, enhancement of resilience and as wildlife habitat. The video describes a South-South Knowledge Exchange on sustainable coffee landscapes in Burundi, Colombia, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

This three-day regional event, held from 12-14 September, assembled 50 delegates from 13 countries around Asia & the Pacific to exchange practical experiences on forestry and climate change. It focused on the topic of Forest Reference (Emission) Levels (FREL/FRLs), a mandatory requirement for countries to be eligible to receive results-based payments under the international REDD+ framework. Submitting FREL/FRLs to the UNFCCC is an involved process that requires understanding national circumstances that drive emissions and removals, and the adoption of reliable and transparent methodologies to measure, report and verify emissions and removals from forests. To help countries address the challenges they face in this technical process, leading experts from the three UN-REDD Programme agencies (UN Environment, UNDP, FAO) gave insightful presentations about the latest developments regarding FREL/FRLs. The event was organized by the UN-REDD Programme, with the support of the Forest Survey of India (FSI), India Council for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and GIZ/BMZ (Government of Germany). Participants travelled from as far away as Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia for the occasion, alongside delegates from India’s neighboring countries of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal, to gain knowledge and exchange with the counterparts on their respective REDD+ strategies. The event was comprised of a two-day workshop and a one-day field trip. During the interactive workshop, countries were asked to present the choices they made when they constructed their FREL/FRLs, and to share their experiences with the technical assessment process. The field trip to Thano Forest Reserve was led by the Forest Survey of India with ICFRE’s support, and involved a field demonstration on how to lay out sample plots for the collection of data for India’s national forest carbon inventory.

Interest, innovation, and investment in gene editing tools like CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) and TALEN® (transcription activator-like effector nucleases) have heated up in recent years, and will only intensify in 2019.The technology is being described as “game changing,” “revolutionary,” and “evolutionary.” And it certainly has the potential to live up to the hype. Gene editing within crops allows for economical nutritional improvements while enabling the production system to produce more with less. The low cost of gene-editing technologies offers solutions to agricultural labor and water shortages, disease and chemical resistance, climate change, food waste, food security, and nutrition.
