Smartphone app lets women report areas where they feel unsafe

00:51
Dark alleyways and empty spaces can often mean danger and a sense of anxiety for the most vulnerable members of society. Now in a bid to improve safety, the Australian capital of Canberra has come up with a new interactive website where people can give their feedback about where they feel unsafe and why. For some people certain areas at night are a 'no go', once it gets dark. Frances McNair is one of many people using the Safety Mapping Tool. "There are so many places in Canberra where the l… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2016/09/09/smartphone-app-lets-women-report-areas-where-they-feel-unsafe What are the top stories today? euronews hi-tech - Television tunes in to the future

04:30
http://www.euronews.com/ IFA, the world's leading trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances opened in Berlin. Up to 1500 exhibitors and 240,000 visitors tuned in to see how they might be watching television in the years ahead, surfing the net on a tablet or using their mobile smart phone to connect with all sorts of tasks. If you have just bought a 3D TV well its almost out of date already! This year the star of the exhibition was the 4K high definition. The name comes from the horizontal resolution, around 4,000 pixels a lot more than current HD screens. Samsung, fresh from its high-profile legal battle with Apple, launched its latest Galaxy Note, with a highly-accurate electronic pen. The processor is faster, and the software adapted for the stylus, called the S Pen, the phone's signature feature. The 14-centimetre HD 16:9 screen is narrower but longer than on the first version. The price is not known yet, but could be around 700 euros. Visitors also saw on display a new generation of refrigerators, coffee machines, vacuum cleaners and robots which can help around the home with those household chores. euronews hi-tech - Apple vs Samsung

03:59
http://fr.euronews.com/ Apple contre Samsung.

http://www.euronews.net/ There are 5 billion mobile phones in the world. Many people, especially the young, use mobile phones without taking into account the alleged potential health risks involved. But since last May the International Agency for Research on Cancer has been giving clear warnings about a possible causal relationship between mobile phone use and a malignant type of brain cancer: the glioma.
euronews innovation - Un système de recyclage mobile

03:01
Microsoft-Nokia move could revolutionise mobile market

The agreement by communications and IT firm Nokia of Finland to sell Microsoft its main handset business marks a significant mutation in the booming mobile market, as PCs have rapidly taken second place to smartphones and one-piece computer tablets. Microsoft still has huge revenues from its Windows computer operating system, business software and gaming console. But it is far from a leading player in mobile devices. Google's Android and Apple's iOS system make up more than 90 percent of the market. Nokia first partnered up with Microsoft in 2011 when it began putting Microsoft Windows in its phones. Nokia dominated the handset business for 14 years. Korean electronics conglomerate "Samsung overtook it in sales in 2012":http://www.euronews.com/2013/07/26/samsung-makes-record-profit-but-aware-phone-boom-can-t-last . As US Apple forged ahead with its juggernaut iPhone product line, Nokia took a hammering. At least one analyst said Nokia's phone business is changing hands at a 'fire sale' price; others aren't so sure. Microsoft's strategy seems to be approaching Apple's, in combining an operating system with an application store, an economic model that Apple invented, and which whammied the whole sector, Apple turning up trumps. Buying Nokia, Microsoft flexes its muscles, adding smartphone potential to its Xbox game console and Surface tablet, seriously planning to fill out its product line. The deal still needs Nokia shareholders' and regulators' approval; after that, Microsoft will have to prove there is a place for a third major player in smartphone operating systems. Telecoms companies say they aren't against having a third giant in the game, balancing Apple and Google power. *Also read:* Microsoft buys Nokia's handset business Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Euronews: 20 years go storytelling

03:06
http://www.euronews.com/ The new year means a birthday for the channel you're watching - euronews started life 20 years ago. It was born out of war. The European Broadcasting Union saw how the US 24-hour news channel CNN has dominated international coverage of the First Persian Gulf War and decided there should be a European version. The European Union and 10 of the region's public broadcasters provided the initial resources and expertise with studios in the south-eastern French city of Lyon. Over the years the look of the station changed, but the principle remained the same "World news from a European perspective". By 2001, Portuguese and Russian had been added to the initial five languages - English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. More languages have followed, along with the involvement of new shareholders - the success of al-Jazeera and other Arabic language broadcasters prompted the European Union to fund an Arabic service. It was followed by Turkish, Farsi for Iranian viewers, and then Ukrainian. Changes in technology have led to a major expansion of the station's presence on the internet and social media such as Facebook and Twitter as well as podcasts and YouTube. As people increasingly watch not on televisions, but on computers, tablets and even mobile phones that is where you will find the output, as euronews goes app happy. The original on-air style of no presenters - just the images telling the story - has also been modified. Now you are more and more likely to see a euronews reporter on scene as the emphasis has changed from video and reports from our partner stations to the use of our own journalists, often operating out of a growing network of bureaus that have been opened in places like Brussels, London, Doha, Cairo, Paris, Moscow, Kiev, and Washington. For the first time, whole language services are being based outside the main studios. Starting with a Greek newsroom in Athens, to be followed by a Hungarian service from Budapest - the 13th language. With new languages, the audience grows averaging seven million viewers every day, in 150 countries via satellite and cable as well as rebroadcasts by terrestrial channels. So after 20 years of story telling, it's time to look to the future with some encouraging words from the top man at the United Nations, Ban Ki moon who said: "I sincerely hope that euronews will continue to provide such news to the world meeting the expectation of the international community" Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Based on leaks from suppliers, it is almost certain there will be a cheaper version of the iPhone, partly made of brightly coloured plastic. That would be to try to tap into markets like China and India, where it is fast losing ground to rivals. For the so-called premium users there will be the latest version of its existing flagship smartphone, to be known as the iPhone 5S, There have been a number of reports that the more expensive model will include a fingerprint sensor as a security device, removing the need for passwords. Investors worries were dispelled that the social media site would not be able to make money from adverts on mobile devices. Founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook will "soon have more revenue on mobile than on desktop" computers. Indeed, smartphones and tablets accounted for almost half of its total advertising revenue in the second quarter. Analysts also expect further growth from new advertising on Instagram - the photo site it bought recently for one billion dollars - as well as with the 15-second video ads Facebook is planning to roll out. xxx Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews
Huge handset or smallish tablet? - corporate

http://www.euronews.com/ Samsung has unveiled its latest - and biggest ever smartphone - the Galaxy Mega. It has a 6.3 inch screen (16 centimetres); though for people with smaller hands there is a 5.8 inch version. The South Koreans keep churning out new models seemingly trying to overwhelm main rival Apple and other smartphone makers with sheer numbers. Some analysts have said it is too big, but what matters is what customers thinks. Latest Apple iPhone set to debut

00:26
http://www.euronews.com/ The wait is almost over for iPhone fans. At an Apple media event in San Francisco on Wednesday it is due to unveil its latest smartphone offering - the iPhone 5 - along with other new products. The launch is hugely important for Apple - which is facing strong competition from Samsung and other rivals - as the iPhone contributes half of its revenue and the majority of its profit. The latest version of the game-changing handset is widely expected to offer 4G wireless technology for the first time, and a 4-inch display, up from the current 3.5 inches. But it remains to be seen if Chief Executive Tim Cook has any surprises up his sleeve, and if he will show off any technological breakthroughs that can put the iPhone 5 head and shoulders above the competition. Apple shares typically rally ahead of, and sell off after, a major product launch. They have gained 15 percent in the past six weeks to touch an all-time high on Monday. Mobile and tablet annual tech fest in Barcelona

01:01
http://www.euronews.com/ It is a busy start for the Mobile World Congress - Barcelona's annual tech event. Vying for the attentions of the visitors are offerings from 1,500 exhibitors, including the latest from Nokia and Samsung. Our euronews correspondent on the ground told us: "Here in Barcelona, 70,000 visitors are expected. It's open warfare between the different operating systems of smartphone with Android leading the way by some margin. Samsung unveiled their new Galaxy Note, and we've also seen Nokia's new Lumia for the first time. Samsung's new Galaxy Note is slightly bigger and has better resolution than Apple's bestselling iPad Mini. It boasts a 20.3cm screen with a resolution of 189 pixels per inch (ppi). With the giants of Apple, Google and Microsoft absent, the event is a real opportunity for other players. Nokia were hoping to make waves with the unveiling of their new Lumia. But they've got their work cut out - not for nothing is the industry known as the "phone and tablet wars."
