US Mining Companies Show New Interest in Rare Earths

03:58
I'm Mario Ritter with the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Today we continue our report on the group of chemical elements known as rare earth metals. These are mined from the earth and used to make technology from mobile phones to missiles. The United States once led the world in rare earths. Today China controls almost all production. Premier Wen Jiabao says China will not use these metals as a diplomatic weapon. But Japan says exports meant for that country have remained at Chinese ports as a result of a recent dispute. The United States stopped mining rare earths in two thousand two. Companies blamed environmental rules and low-priced imports from China. But now exploration is moving forward again. Edward Cowle is president and chief executive of a company called U.S. Rare Earths. He and his partners gained rights to some land in the American West about fifteen years ago. They had been interested in thorium -- a radioactive element that can fuel nuclear reactors but not be processed into weapons. Mr. Cowle later found that the land also held a lot of rare earth metals -- lately a subject of intense interest. The company has not started mining yet. It still has to get permits and work with other businesses to put operations in place. Ed Cowle says a lot of work remains. He says the earliest that they could open the mine would be in six to seven years. Another American company is Molycorp. Jim Sims, the public affairs director, says Molycorp has already begun producing three thousand tons of rare earths a year. That makes the United States the world's second largest producer, a distant second. Mr. Sims says Molycorp is the western hemisphere's only producer of rare earth products. The company says the largest reserves of rare earths outside of China are in its mine in Mountain Pass, California, and in the Mount Weld area of Australia. Jim Sims says Molycorp spends only about ten percent on mining. The big cost is in chemically separating the rare earths from the minerals that carry them. He says Molycorp raised about three hundred eighty million dollars when it sold stock to the public for the first time in July. The company aims to increase production to twenty thousand tons by two thousand twelve. It says that would more than meet current levels of demand in the United States. UK investors favour mining companies with overseas assets as Brexit turbulence rocks market

09:10
Mining Capital's Alastair Ford says it's been a mixed picture this week on the markets - particularly so since news emerged of UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal. ''The gold miners have done really well as investors in the UK have piled in for two reasons - one is that gold is the natural hedge anyway and the second reason of course is that all the gold miners are operating and mining overseas and earning US dollars so that's a double hedge''. Ford also looks ahead to what's shaping up to be a busy few weeks in the London mining space with the 121 Mining conference next week followed by Mines and Money and then the Mining Capital event on the 29th of November.

16 FAMOUS LOGOS WITH A HIDDEN MEANING (That We Never Even Noticed)

06:28
How to design a successful logo? How to build a famous brand for your business? Some of the most well-known logos in the world were purposefully designed to indicate something much more than simple beauty. In fact, it seems that in some cases, every line, curve, and color has meaning behind it. Adidas, Apple, BMW, Coca-Cola, Toyota… We see these famous brands everywhere but never consider what their logos exactly mean. Curious to know the secret? Watch the 16 famous logos with a hidden meaning you've never noticed. #logomeaning #logosecret # Hyundai 0:33 The letter ’Н’ symbolizes two people – a client and a representative of the company – shaking hands. Adidas 0:52 The current logo is three stripes at an angle which together form a triangle. This symbolizes a mountain, which in turn represents the challenges that all sportsmen have to overcome day after day. Apple 1:21 Rob Janoff, the designer who came up with the world-famous Apple company logo, explained his idea in one of his interviews. He bought a bag of apples, placed them in a bowl, and spent time drawing them for a week, trying to break the image down into something simple. Vaio 1:58 The first two letters of the Vaio logo symbolize an analogue wave. The last two are similar to the numbers 1 and 0 — that is, symbols of a digital signal. Amazon 2:14 The orange arrow is similar to a smile because the company wants its customers to be satisfied. The arrow is also stretched between the letters ’A’ and ’Z’, in a hint that the company sells absolutely every product you can imagine. Baskin Robbins 2:40 The pink-colored parts of the "BR" section make up the number 31, which is how many ice cream flavors Baskin Robbins used to famously sell. Toyota 2:56 The logo represents a stylized image of a needle eye with a thread passing through it. This is a hint at the company’s past – they used to produce weaving machines. Continental 3:28 Continental, a famous car tire producer, has a logo in which the first two letters depict a car wheel. Formula 1 3:41 If you look carefully at the white space between the letter ’F’ and the red stripes, you can see the number 1. Pinterest 3:59 On Pinterest, people collect images they like from across the Internet and ’pin’ them to their online boards. That’s why the image of a pin is hidden in the letter P. Beats 4:17 Beats, an audio equipment producer based in the USA, uses a logo in which the letter ’B’ looks like headphones on a person’s head. Toblerone 4:32 The famous chocolate company based in Bern, Switzerland, has a silhouette of a bear in its logo. That's because Bern is sometimes called a city of bears. BMW 4:55 The logo is simply a part of the Bavarian flag, the area of Germany where the company originated. LG 5:18 The logo is a stylized image of a person’s face. According to the company, this represents its aspiration to have human relations with their customers. Evernote 5:34 The corner of the elephant’s ear is folded over in a similar way how people fold the corner of a page to make notes. Coca-Cola 5:57 In the space between the letters ’O’ and ’L’, you can see the Danish flag. It’s purely a coincidence. Nevertheless, Coca-Cola has used this as part of its marketing campaigns in the Scandinavian country. If you’ve enjoyed this video, hit that thumbs up button! Peru: Bill to Provide Land to Mining Companies Opposed

01:59
Analysts warn that in an effort to reactivate economic growth, the Peruvian government is facilitating investment by mining companies whose operations exploit local resources but give little to the affected communities in return. A new bill in Congress, already approved in committee, would give land to investors even though the area in question might belong to or be essential to the lives of local residents. Local peasant and indigenous organizations are fighting the bill, charging that it violates the Peruvian Constitution and international law mandating consultations in such cases with the affected communities. 12 Famous Logos With a Secret Meaning

10:53
A logo is the face of a brand, and we often buy this or that item because its “face” is well-known to the world. Come on, don’t deny it! As for the best logos, they convey a hidden subtext that represents the company’s values, goals, or history. So, here are 12 world-famous logos with a secret hidden meaning! TIMESTAMPS: Airbnb 1:15 TripAdvisor 2:02 MasterCard 2:55 Dell 3:53 National Geographic 4:26 Vodafone 5:08 Haribo 6:00 Subway 6:37 DC Comics 7:29 Mozilla Firefox 8:15 Bacardi 9:09 Orbit 9:42 Preview photo credit: Firefox logo used since June 2013 (version 23.0 Beta), Previous version of logo, used since Firefox 3.5: By © The Mozilla Foundation, CC BY 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.es, https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Mozilla_Firefox_logo_2013.svg Animation is created by Bright Side Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - The logo contains 4 simple yet meaningful elements: the head of a person that represents a user of their site, the sign for a location on a map to show where the house or apartment is, a heart to represent love, and, finally, all of these symbols combine to make the letter “A” for Airbnb. - TripAdvisor’s logo is an owl, which symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. As for its different-colored eyes, they show that each traveler has a choice to make: green means go, and red means no! - The international payment system we all know these days as MasterCard was established in 1966 as Interbank. Red stands for bravery, passion, and for doing what makes you feel joy. The bright yellow symbolizes prosperity. - Ever wonder why the “E” in Dell’s logo is all askew? Well, the founder of the company, Michael Dell, wanted to convey the meaning of the popular idiom “turn the world on its ear,” which means to change something in an exciting way. - National Geographic, the popular magazine and channel that broadcasts documentaries in 171 countries, made its logo a yellow rectangle. The rectangle symbolizes a door that’s open to the world of knowledge about nature, science, and culture. Yellow and bright just like the Sun. - Vodafone is a British mobile provider that operates mostly in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. The company chose a couple of mysterious things for its logo, which looks sort of like an earphone. The designers wanted to show that, with Vodafone, users can talk to each other any time they want. - The Haribo’s founder combined the first 2 letters of his first and last name, Hans Riegel, and added the first 2 letters of his hometown of Bonn. - The arrows on the first and last letters of the Subway logo are there for a reason: they actually stand for the entrance and exit to the subway. This way, the company demonstrates that, with Subway, you can eat on the go, like in the actual subway! - Jim Lee revealed what the new logo of DC Comics actually means. The nooks and angles are meant to evoke the Superman “S” symbol, the Wonder Woman “WW” emblem, and the Bat-Signal. - “Firefox” is the English translation of the Chinese name for a red panda. This way, the company wanted to demonstrate how unique they are because this is a very rare kind of panda that’s actually endangered. - The legend goes that the wife of Bacardi’s co-founder saw a bat in their liquor factory. But instead of getting scared and running for the exit, he took it as a sign and decided that this was exactly what should be on the logo. - If you look closely at the Orbit's logo, you’ll notice that the capital “O” is split into 2 parts: one dark and one light. In the background you can see the image of an orbit. So, it’s clear that the “O” symbolizes day and night and a planet revolving around the Sun. How to introduce yourself in a job interview

14:38
Have you ever wondered that why despite of having listed all the details about yourself in the resume, the interviewer still likes to start the session by asking you “Tell me something about yourself” The reason for this is that people like listening to information been presented to them in the form of verbal expression in contrast to referring to a printed document. Yes this simply means that they directly like to hear from the horses’s mouth that how would the candidates like to narrate the story of their life, in their own words. “Tell us something about yourself” doesn’t means that you go right back to your childhood memories and share tales of your first love or your favorite ROCK band or your obsession with Harry Potter; rather think about the awards, accolades or experiences you’ve had in your life. Consider the themes, personality traits and skills that come across through these experiences and introspect that which of these are the most important to get across through recruiters. Through personal introduction, the interviewer is giving you a chance to highlight all the key features of your personal and professional life, the top experiences you’ve had so far and the most influential skills you possess. Follow the points mentioned in the video, the next time you face a job interview and enhance the chances of you getting selected!!

Recycling: Old cell phones are a gold mine | DW English

04:26
Just about all Germans have three of four old mobile telephones lying about in a drawer somewhere. That's more than 72 million cell phones country-wide. But simply throwing them away is what's really wasteful. The electronic elements of cell phones contain valuable materials such as copper, silver, gold and rare earth metals which can earn their owners good money! Germans can sell their old mobiles on the Internet portal "Wir kaufens". The company that runs it, asgoodas, from Frankfurt-Oder receives more than 6000 cell phones a month. In the US and Britain, such opportunities have existed for a long time. Now the business is gaining momentum in Germany. Read more: http://www.dw.com/en/old-cell-phones-find-new-owners/a-15350851

Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. 19 Sand mining companies working without licenses- Parliament told

19 sand mining companies have been found to be operating without licenses and other credentials required to legally carry out sand mining in Uganda. This was revealed today as eight sand-mining companies appeared before Parliament’s Committee of Natural Resources. The companies had been summoned before the committee, which is probing illegal sand-mining in the country. The committee also learnt that Mango-Tree, a Chinese company that had been licensed to dredge part of Lake Victoria in preparation for the construction of a dock, was still carrying out sand-mining activities despite having been ordered to stop. What does MINING ENGINEERING mean? MINING ENGINEERING meaning - MINING ENGINEERING definition - MINING ENGINEERING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Mining engineering is an engineering discipline that applies science and technology to the extraction of minerals from the earth. Mining engineering is associated with many other disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and surveying. A mining engineer may manage any phase of mining operations – from exploration and discovery of the mineral resource, through feasibility study, mine design, development of plans, production and operations to mine closure. With the process of Mineral extraction, some amount of waste and uneconomic material are generated which are the primary source of pollution in the vicinity of mines. Mining activities by their nature cause a disturbance of the natural environment in and around which the minerals are located. Mining engineers must therefore be concerned not only with the production and processing of mineral commodities, but also with the mitigation of damage to the environment both during and after mining as a result of the change in the mining area. Mining Engineers in India are earning relatively high salaries in comparison to many other professions. The average salary for a Mining Engineer in India is $15,250. However, the salaries are always highly determined by the level of skill, where the organisation is based and which organisation you are working for. In comparison to salaries of Mining Engineer’s working in other regions, such as Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, the salaries are dismal, however when comparing salaries from one region to another, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration, such as the cost of living etc.In the United States, there are an estimated 6,630 employed mining engineers. The mean yearly salary for a mining engineer in the U.S. is $90,070 .

Brazil: Rousseff Says Mining Companies Must Pay for Damages

02:02
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said on Thursday that mine operator Samarco and owners, Anglo-Australia BHP Billiton and Brazilian Vale, are responsible for the disaster that left eight dead and 20 missing last week near the town of Mariana in southern Brazil. The mudslide occurred when two dams broke containing mining wastes that completely buried the town of Bento Rodriguez and polluted 500 km of the Rio Doce. The CEO of BHP Billiton inspected the area on Wednesday and promised to support Samarco. He announced the creation of an assistance fund for people affected by the disaster. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/brazil-rousseff-says-mining-companies-must-pay-for-damages/

Argentines protest foreign companies

02:05
A Canadian company has suspended a proposed gold mining project in Argentina following a series of protests. Environmental groups and residents in the town of Famatina, near the proposed site where mining company Osisko wants an open pit goldmine say the mine would pollute the local water supply. "They will have to pass over our dead bodies," says Juan Carlos Rivero, a nut farmer in the north western province of La Rioja. Residents in Famatina fear the mine would take and possibly contaminate the water supply. "Water is worth more than gold", read one sign, a reference its scarcity in this arid region. The 800-person strong protests, along with similar protests in Peru, El Salvador, Chile, and Argentina where local communities demandedtheir interests take precedence over those of mainly foreign mining companies, forced Osisko to suspend exploration plans in Famatina for the time being. In the capital, masked demonstrators threw rocks at British businesses in Buenos Aires to protest Britain's continued control of the Falkland islands as Prince William arrived in the country. About 60 members of the group Quebracho, calling William the 'Pirate Prince', marched to demand sovereignity of the islands for Argentina. "We came here today to speak out against this character, but most of all to argue the sovereignty of Las Malvinas. They are trying to step on that sovereignty by taking about people's right to self-determination," said leftist leader Juan Miguel Gomez. Britain has controlled the islands, about 480 kilometres off the southern Argentine coast, since 1833. In 1982, Britain sent a naval force and thousands of troops to reclaim the islands after Argentine forces sent by the country's then-military junta occupied them. About 650 Argentine and 255 British troops died in the 10-week conflict. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. Infinitives of Purpose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPmjYD6Qi5I&list=PLrPhmmx5j5b-AjltXcrLI4iiqF7lsj_P8&index=9 TRANSCRIPT Oh, there's free cake in the staff room? Thanks for letting me know. See you there. Yeah, free cake. All right. Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on writing a business or professional email in English. Now, this is useful for those of you who are just starting a corporate job, or if you are looking to work in an English environment where emails are constant. So, I use my email every day. I can tell you 100% that I have used all of these at one point or another in my emailing career, we'll say. So, I've sent thousands of emails, and I've used all of these. So, these are phrases that you can use in internal emails between yourself and your colleagues, or between yourself and someone who works with your company. So, maybe you know someone who is selling, you know, technology to your company, like printers or computers; maybe there's someone who supplies paper for your company and you have to interact with them, so you can use these phrases and expressions with them. All right? So, first we'll start with the greeting. We have: "Hello", "Hi", "Hey, Steve". Steve - these are all for Steve. So, you notice... If you're wondering: "Why didn't you put 'Dear'? Why didn't you put 'To whom it may concern'?" You could still use those. I guess it depends on your own personal comfort with formality. Having worked, like, you know, in Canada and exchanging emails with people in the United States, most people are comfortable with a "Hello" or a "Hi". Only use a "Hey" for someone you know. So, these are in level of formality. Of these three, "Hello" would be the most formal; "Hi" would be very neutral; and "Hey" is a very familiar, very informal, so only use this with people you know well or that you have a good professional relationship with. Next... All right, so one thing you might do in an email is to introduce a new topic or to inform someone of something; maybe not just one person, maybe a group of people, maybe a whole department. So, for example: "This is to inform you that..." Very general. So, maybe someone has received a promotion in your company. This is something you might see from your boss; or if you are a boss or a manager, you might send this to your team. "This is to inform you that", you know... Let's say Rosa; you have an employee named Rosa. "This is to inform you that Rosa has been promoted to the position of..." Okay? So you're giving information to your team. This one: "Just to let you know"... Now, this is very informal. So, only send this to people you know well, people within your company, maybe a friend in the company. So: "Just to let you know" is a much more informal, casual way that you can use in an email, instead of: "This is to inform you that..." Okay? So, for example: "Hey. Just to let you know, I'm not here on Friday. Please see me if you need anything from me before Friday." Okay? Also, you're introducing a topic, or informing your company, or someone of something, so: "Hey, Steve. Good news!", "Hey, Steve. Bad news.", "Hey, Steve. I've got good news.", "I've got bad news." Now, you notice, here, I used an exclamation after "Good news", you know, it's a good idea to make it seem exciting, so: "Good news! You know, I just got promoted." Okay? Or: "Good news! I'm getting a raise." Okay? Something like this. "Bad news. We're not getting pizza for free today.", "Bad news. I can't make lunch, sorry." Okay? "I can't make lunch." It doesn't mean you're creating lunch, you're making lunch; it means: "I can't go to lunch with you." Okay? So, you have: "This is to inform you that...", "Just to let you know...", "Good news!", "Bad news.", "I've got good news.", "I've got bad news." Okay? […]
