In this month's episode, I teach you various layers of strategy and how to use strategy tools. What I’d like to do in about 45 minutes to an hour is to give you a sense of what strategy is, what tools we use to develop strategy, and then teach you how to apply these corporate level tools to our day to day lives through developing strategic thinking abilities. So if you take this mini-course, by the end of it, you’ll very clearly learn what strategy is and its various levels such corporate strategy, business strategy, and functional strategies. You will no longer confuse it with tasks or goals, then you will learn about Strategy Canvas with value curves. It’s a tool that will help you see the bigger picture, help you with the positioning of your offerings and hence develop strategies to become… unique. And while I am teaching you these, I’ll run so many case studies to make it crystal clear for you. Then finally, the second half of the video will be the most useful part to you. Because in reality, you are probably not the strategy manager or the CEO of a large multinational company, you are probably not Coca Cola’s Chairman, so what I did at the 2nd half of the video is to customize strategy development so it can be applicable to your day to day lives. You will learn how to develop a strategic thinking that will apply to your work, apply to your family life, your school, in simple terms; your life. You’ll be a smarter person, because you’ll be more strategic in your thinking, you’ll have more success because you’ll be able to identify more opportunities, you’ll fail less because you’ll be able to identify risks even before they become apparent. And I’ll try my best to do the impossible and cover everything under 1 hour and make it super easy to understand. I’ll try but let’s see if I’ll succeed. So, what is strategy; Strategy is a word that gets used a lot and often in a wrong context. Most people confuse it with goals. Essentially, strategy is a roadmap to how we are going to win. Where you are is your “as-is” state, and where you want to go is your “to-be” state. How you are going to bridge that gap is your strategy. So, if I was to teach strategy to my children I’d say, you wanna reach the finish line first. You may walk straight to the finish line at 5 kms per hour, Or you may extend your route, take more time as you have to travel more distance, but collect the speed boost on the way so you go faster at the end at around 20 km per hour. Collecting that speed boost to win would be your strategy. now let’s get back to the adult world, in business, we have 3 major layers of strategy; We have Corporate Strategy We have Business Strategy And we have Functional strategy So, let’s start with corporate strategy;

In modern organizations with flatter hierarchical structures, these high impact teams are smaller, more agile, and themselves structured to benefit from individual specialization without regard for a ‘pecking order’. Even though these teams are designed to provide maximum flexibility in a constantly changing environment, it is likely that an organization will still experience resistance to change. Overcoming resistance to change in the workplace doesn’t have to be a constant battle. Even though change is ever present, both in the market and within organizations transition does not need to be a struggle, especially regarding those that will help the team in the long run. With a forward looking and proactive strategy, resistance to change is first reduced and then eliminated. 7 things to do to eliminate resistance to change Leadership is an organizational imperative when managing change, and leaders who inspire a cultural shift in their staff have the greatest success in managing change. In a 2013 PwC survey, nearly two thirds of staff surveyed felt that a top leader is in charge of change management and almost half felt that top leaders should be in charge of cultural change. The good news here is that the same number of people who felt that cultural change is also their responsibility. The bad news is that only 14% saw any responsibility for change management falling on their shoulders. The harsh reality is that effective change is determined by having in place a corporate culture conducive to change. It is here that inspirational leadership in flat hierarchical structures is, perhaps, at its most potent. Here are seven strategies for overcoming resistance to change in the workplace: 1. Structure the team to maximize its potential Give team members appropriate roles and responsibilities that use skills to their best advantage, while also providing the potential for personal and team development. 2. Set challenging, achievable, and engaging targets Be clear in guidance about goals and targets. Break change projects into smaller milestones, and celebrate achievements. Goals should be seen as progressive and in line with values and beliefs. 3. Resolve conflicts quickly and effectively Utilize the seven methods of care-fronting to regulate and control communicative breakdowns. Encourage openness and honesty and engender an environment of mutual trust and respect. 4. Show passion Communicate passionately and be an example of belief in the future vision. When other people see leaders’ behaviors emulating those required by change, they more quickly come into line with the new behaviors and become change advocates themselves. 5. Be persuasive Engage employees in change by being an energized leader. Focus on opportunities and persuade rather than assert authority. Share experiences as you persuade change through stories that focus on positive change. 6. Empower innovation and creativity Give opportunities for feedback and remain flexible as you alter course toward your change goals. Encourage people to be creative, discover solutions to unfolding problems, and to become part of the change process. The process is difficult for everyone involved, and your team will be more invested with solutions they have created themselves, rather than those dictated to them. 7. Remain positive and supportive People find change unsettling, even though change is a constant in personal lives as well as professional environments. They will need the support of a positive leader who inspires free thought, honest communication, and creativity as personal and team development is encouraged. Employees expect leaders to manage change. Inspirational leaders create a culture where change becomes the responsibility of all. He built on his experience at major Belgian banks ( Cera and Dexia) and an American multinational ( Procter & Gamble). http://jerrymitchellblog.com/ Q: You talked about a few different skill sets I want to focus on. You talked about nurturing. Give me a specific example of a time where you nurtured someone. How did you do it in that scenario? A: I had a young lady that came to work for our company and she was the first female application engineer for computer aided design and manufacturing. And after about six-seven months of working with the salesmen and supporting them on sales calls, she wanted to be a sales person. Nobody wanted that person to work as a sales person. So, I said okay, no one's calling on these accounts, I got some named accounts, Fortune 100 companies and said if you close one of these accounts before the end of the year and I'll give you a $600,000 quota and if you do that I'll make you a sales person. She did 2.4 million-dollars in 6 months' time. She was the third leading salesmen in the company out of over 100 people because we would sit down and talk in the evening. I'd talk to her, and her father would come in. When you are nurturing people it is difficult because families come in, they want to know what you are and what you're going to do -- because someone goes home and is always talking about you, whether it's a man or a woman. We are always going home and saying, well Jerry nurtured me and he told me to do this today. And I told them, people some of the things they had to do as sales skills. And part of my my nurturing a person I would go out and make calls with somebody and then I would sit in the car and say how do you think this went and she'd tell me all the things that went and I said well, here's what I would do a little differently. But I never tried to embarrass that person in front of somebody else by saying. The only thing was that when we went in a closing situation. If I walked in and saw someone was going to close this deal then I want to close the deal. That's the entrepreneur in me. I am going to get the money that's on the table. That is the only time I would do that. Otherwise I nurture people along like that. I watch them in their career and people stay in their career like that. I have a young gentleman I nurtured, I went into a company one of my first start-up companies. He was in Detroit and I came in over him. He thought he could have my job. We became very good friends; I nurtured him on a whole bunch of things. When he started his own company, I was the first person he sent a letter to on his stationary. And his statement was I taught him more about ethics by how I acted and not by anything I ever said to him. He now races Mercedes Gullwing classic cars, and he's got partners running his business because when he did this, he wrote me a letter and said, "I treat my employees the way you tried to treat me." He brought a condo up north of Michigan and gives it to his employee of the month and you get to use it for the weekend for the whole month. He hires all the people out of Michigan State University. So that's how you nurture people. You have to be there for them in good and bad times. You have to point out when they are wrong and when they are doing something very positive.
