What is the Blockchain? This 2 minute video explains it in a very easy way. As usual, please leave you questions and ideas in the comments. with love your MinuteVideos Team Video Script: Scene 1 Blockchain is a Peer to Peer software technology that protects the integrity of a digital piece of information. It was invented to create the alternative currency Bitcoin but may be used for other cryptocurrencies, online signature services, voting systems and many other applications. In this video we explain how it works and what makes it special. Scene 2 Everyone uses paper money. When you get a 10 dollar bill you trust that it's not fake. If instead someone sent you an email saying "here's 10 dollars" you probably wouldn’t trust it. But when we "transfer money", use an ATM or pay with a deposit card that's pretty much exactly what we do. We're sending money in a digital message. Scene 3 To make sure no one's cheating or sending money they don't have, these “messages” go through a few trusted banks that keep a record of everything. They know how much money everyone has and deduct it properly for every transaction. Scene 4 But this becomes expensive when there’s a million transactions around the world every minute. The Economist estimates that banks charged us more than 1.7 trillion dollars to process these payments in 2014. That’s about 2% of the entire world economy! With blockchain we can save a lot of this cost because it lets us send money just like sending an email. Scene 5 Instead of sending a lot of payment information through a few servers, blockchain uses thousands of personal computers on the internet. All transactions are copied and cross checked between every computer in a system wide accounting book called the ledger, which becomes very safe at scale. Scene 6 Blockchain doesn’t just allow us to create safe money online, it lets us protect any piece of digital information. This could be online Identity cards, voter ballots, contracts and many other “legal instruments”, bringing bureaucracy into the 21st century.

Get Bitcoin Here (and $10 of free Bitcoin!): https://www.coinbase.com/join/58c8d740d0190f01af2284b7 What is Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency. It originated in 2008 from a paper written by Satoshi Nakamoto. This may be a real person or not but it is seen at the origins of Bitcoin. Bitcoin runs on a technology known as the blockchain. There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins and this is what makes them valuable and scarce. Bitcoin are created by a process known as mining. Since there are no banks transactions are verified by miners and when miners verify a certain number of transactions they can actually earn Bitcoin. There are many more cryptocurrencies now but Bitcoin is seen as the first. Other popular ones are Litecoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Dash and many others. Bitcoin are stored in locations known as wallets. These Bitcoin wallets can be online, on a hardware device, on a piece of paper or even memorized in your brain. Bitcoin wallets look like a string of numbers and letters. Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology can change the way we do everything in the future. Be sure to check out our channel for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrn5bzpRYOKVJoRoYvn8mPQ

Blockchain explained in plain English Understanding how blockchain works and identifying myths about its powers are the first steps to developing blockchain technologies. Blockchain is an algorithm and distributed data structure for managing electronic cash without a central administrator among people who know nothing about one another. Originally designed for the crypto-currency Bitcoin, the blockchain architecture was driven by a radical rejection of at (government-guaranteed) money and bank-controlled payments. Blockchain is a special instance of Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), almost all of which have emerged in Bitcoin's wake. HOW DOES BLOCKCHAIN WORK? Blockchain is a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) that was invented to support the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Bitcoin was motivated by an extreme rejection of government-guaranteed money and bank-controlled payments. The developer of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto envisioned people spending money without friction, intermediaries, regulation or the need to know or trust other parties. Technically, the original blockchain is separable from Bitcoin, but this report will show that the blockchain design is so specific to Bitcoin that it's not a good fit for much else. The central problem in electronic cash is Double Spend. Because pure electronic money is just data, nothing stops a currency holder from trying to spend it twice. Blockchain solves the Double Spend problem without a digital reserve fund or similar form of umpire. Blockchain monitors and verifies Bitcoin transactions by calling upon a decentralized network of volunteer-run nodes to, in effect, vote on the order in which transactions occur. The network's algorithm ensures that each transaction is unique. Video created by the Centre of International Governance Innovation.

What is Proof of Work? How does it secure the Blockchain? Proof of work refers to the computational puzzle that miners have to solve which allows many open blockchain networks to remain secure and decentralized. Proof of Work uses cryptographic functions that essentially guarantee a certain number of computer cycles were spent to solve the puzzle. In other words, by solving this puzzle, you are proving that you did some amount of work - hence the term Proof of Work. How much work that takes is dictated by the difficulty, which scales the amount of work it takes to solve the puzzle. This puzzle can be thought of like a lottery. Every computer cycle that is used to try and find a solution is a lottery ticket, with the winning reward of issuing the next block and claiming a reward. Proof of Work is the foundation of many open blockchain networks aligning economic incentives in order to build a system that serves everyone equally. What is the Blockchain? How Does Blockchain Work? Understanding Blockchain Technology: The Blockchain is a breakthrough technology that powers many of the cryptocurrency networks that we see today. To keep a record of something, you write it down. In the traditional financial system, we trust intermediaries, like banks, to record transactions for us. But how do you know the record is accurate? On the blockchain, records can be kept without any central intermediary using cryptography. Many blockchain networks allow participants all around the world to engage in a process called mining which ensures the accuracy of these records. The blockchain is a shared record of the data that powers cryptocurrency networks which is a simple but powerful concept. Using this shared record, people are creating innovative solutions that can revolutionize the way that we think about trust in many sectors of finance and computing. The full impact of blockchain technology will likely have profound implications for society in paving the way for a brighter future for everyone. Over the past decade, an alternative digital paradigm has slowly been taking shape at the edges of the internet. This new paradigm is the blockchain. After incubating through millions of Bitcoin transactions and a host of developer projects, it is now on the tips of tongues of CEOs and CTOs, startup entrepreneurs, and even governance activists. Though these stakeholders are beginning to understand the disruptive potential of blockchain technology and are experimenting with its most promising applications, few have asked a more fundamental question: What will a world driven by blockchains look like a decade from now?
