It’s funny because 5 years ago they jumped from $3M to $5.5M, but since then they’ve gone sideways and have been struggling to figure out what to do next. This is what I told him... Your business should be growing in 3 cycles... ... and knowing where you’re at now, can cause you to hold back when you should be leaning in and pushing. It’s probably what happened when he almost doubled in a single 12 month period. My guess is that he focused on the first phase that year, then didn’t do the second, and that caused him to get gun shy. More on that in a bit... … but first, I shot this video to help you understand the 3 cycles and what specific steps you need to take to powerfully (and predictably) ascend from one to the next. If you want to take action and jump in with two feet, here are the cycles: 1. Going after sales - focusing on top line revenue 2. Building cost controls - improving your gross profit 3. Improving market reach - getting your message into the market You just keep cycling through each one and if you're smart, you’ll be using quarterly themes so you can get the whole company behind it! This lecture discusses economics growth, GDP, and business cycle. Economics fluctuations in outputs cause business cycle. If we plot GDP versus time, we come to see an interesting cyclic behavior in GDP which is termed as business cycle. After suffering through contraction phase, economy enters in recession and then recovery and expansion phases. A proper analysis of GDP can give greater insights at macro level and that knowledge can be utilized to make greater profits by global funds who have significant diversification in different markets. A dollar value of GDP can be estimated by two different approaches: expenditure based approach and income based approach. Expenditure based approach tries to estimate GDP after totaling the spending to produce goods and services. The cost for creating a product are quite high and the company needs to still find out how to scale the product for a large amount of quantity. As a result the starting price of the product is very high as well. Usually if the product is still in its own niche new market. The potential buyers are usually limited to the inovators in the market or loyal fans of the brand that were already familiar with their products before. In this stage your first customers and your marketing are essential if you want to reach the next step of the product cycle. The second step of the cycle you want to be in the growth stage. In the growth stage the company is faced with a significant amount of growth as they found out how to use economies of scale. Which means by creating the product in bulk you are making the process more efficient and are able to lower the cost as a result. In this stage it's recommended to invest in marketing and promotional channels and tools. This is the companies big moment to make as much profit as possible. Before we reach the 3rd stage. Which is maturity at this point the largest group of the potential buyers are reached. At that time you start to notice that a lot bundles and value offerings are brought into the market, limited editions ect. At this point there are usually already strong alternatives and competitors on the market that offer the same value. In terms of marketing it's important to understand that is also a important moment to plan and execute your strategy to maintain and keep your target audience informed. By applying the right marketing and business strategies your product line might gain an additional resurgence the in the market. It might also lead to a second growth period in case you reach an new not yet target audience. The final stage is the decline stage, at that stage the significant target audience starts the become smaller as most people that would actually buy the product have already bought the product, bought an alternative brand or are already looking for a new solution to the problem that the product would have solved. Furthermore at this stage the company should consider completely streamlining the product line to squeeze the final profit margins and investing in the product that would replace the current product. In the case of the ipod it would be to create an iphone which surpasses the product in functionality while offering the same value.
