Blockchain: Real World Use Cases

43:48
At Global Architecture Week 2015, we covered ‘Digital Currencies and Cash’ and their relevance to Tax and Welfare Authorities, concluding with the message: “It’s not about Bitcoin, it’s about the Blockchain”. Blockchain technology has the potential to enable a new mutually trusted, transparent way of sharing and transacting. In the UK Public Sector, Sir Mark Walport’s report Distributed Ledger Technology: Beyond Blockchain encouraged Government to assess its early use and potential. Meanwhile in the private sector, Blockchain FinTech excitement among start-ups and venture capitalists remained strong for a technology promised to be “like a whole new internet for value exchange”. But where are the real world use cases today? What is it that makes a use case more likely to succeed? In this talk, Nick Meyne, Enterprise Architect, Capgemini shares and discusses a number of Capgemini examples. Filmed at Capgemini Week of Innovation Networks 2016 in Telford, UK.

Blockchain Applications In Microgrids - IECON 2017

03:01
Paper title: Blockchain Applications In Microgrids - An overview of current projects and concepts Authors names & Affiliations: Andrija Goranovi? Marcus Meisel Lampros Fotiadis Stefan Wilker Institute of Computer Technology, TU Wien, Austria Albert Treytl Thilo Sauter Center for Integrated Sensor Systems, Danube University Krems, Austria Paper abstract: Since the release of Bitcoins as crypto currency, Bitcoin has played a prominent part in the media. However, not Bitcoin but the underlying technology blockchain offers the possibility to innovatively change industries. The decentralized structure of the blockchain is particularly suitable for implementing control and business processes in microgrids, using smart contracts and decentralized applications. This paper provides a state of the art survey overview of current blockchain technology based projects with the potential to revolutionize microgrids and provides a first attempt to technically characterize different start-up approaches. The most promising use case from the microgrid perspective is peer-to-peer trading, where energy is exchanged and traded locally between consumers and prosumers. An application concept for distributed PV generation is provided in this promising area.

Top 5 projects on Ethereum blockchain

If you check out coinmarketcap.com you will see that out of all of the Ethereum projects, Golem is the one with the biggest market cap of almost 200 million dollars. Golem is presented as a global, decentralized world supercomputer which anyone can be a part of. You basically rent out your computer to do cool stuff for other people, from rendering, to research, to running websites, in a completely decentralized and inexpensive way. Getting paid to rent your computer, while not even using it, is pretty cool ha?! Golem is currently running an alpha test and it's unclear when the beta version will be online. The second one on the list is Augur, an application that's presented as the future of forecasting. Augur is a prediction market platform that rewards users for correctly predicting future events. The main idea is to make more accurate predictions by large groups of people, rather than a small team of experts. Correct predictions are rewarded by the network, while incorrect reporting is penalised - this incentivises truthful reporting. Augur's crowdsale raised more than 2,000 BTC and 100,000 Ether on its first day. It ran from the 17th of August 2015 until the 5th of September 2015. The platform is currently in beta phase. The third project on coinmarketcap.com by value today is Gnosis which recently collected 330 million dollars for their initial coin offering in 10 minutes, which is insane! So if you connected to participate in ICO 11 minutes after the ICO started you were already late! Gnosis is similar to Augur, as it's also a prediction market where you get rewarded for correctly predicting future events. Gnosis roadmap says we can expect Gnosis alpha online at the first quarter of 2018. The next one I would like to mention is First Blood. First Blood is a decentralized app created for electronic sports (eSports) enthusiasts. The platform allows players to test their skills against other players in popular eSports games like League of Legends, Dota 2, and CounterStrike, without relying on middlemen that not only charge overhead fees but can also be fallible in reporting match results. As such, First Blood relies on the decentralized nature of Ethereum to make the eSports industry more transparent and efficient. Akasha is the next project on the Ethereum blockchain that I would like to discuss. A “Next-Generation Social Media Network” is how the founders present Akasha to the world. As far as I know it will be like a decentralized blogging network on a blockchain which would guarantee freedom of speech and will be a response to all censorships that users experience today on some of the other centralized blogging networks. I want to apologize for not speaking in more detail about each project. Because they are so special, they deserve to receive much more time. However, I don't want this video to be too long, so I promise I will speak about each of the projects in more detail in future videos.

Blockchain and distributed ledgers: Will the reality live up to the hype? Will distributed ledger provide a ‘reset’ button for the internet and other networks? Many of the primary privacy risks prevalent today are due to an increasing centralization of information. A decentralized network is potentially more secure but not without its vulnerabilities. During this session, a panel of experts will illuminate how distributed ledgers work, discuss their potential and explore how the world of finance and other application areas could be reshaped. Cryptocurrencies and their escalating, volatile values have successfully captivated the public. However, the rise to fame has not brought a thorough understanding of the underlying technology along with it and distributed ledgers remain largely misunderstood. A better comprehension of the technology is increasingly vital due to its potential ramifications in finance and regarding privacy. Distributed ledgers could conceivably reshape finance through cryptocurrencies and smart contracts, cure data protection issues with social media and re-decentralize the internet. In short, a chance to hit the ‘reset’ button. Simultaneously, the very aspects that make distributed ledgers so promising are the same that make it vulnerable. Though replicability, immutability and being append-only are enormous strengths, they are equally large burdens when used maliciously. The Hot Topic was coordinated and will be moderated by Eva Wolfangel, European Science Writer of the Year 2018, a science journalist with over 15 years of experience covering a range of scientific issues and technological developments and highlighting their significance for the public. In order to unravel the technology behind distributed ledgers and its potential implications, Wolfangel has enlisted the help of experts with backgrounds ranging from academia to industry. Through discussions and an open debate, the speakers aim to distinguish the implausible from the practical and distill how the distributed ledgers will further influence our lives. Experts: Mihai Alisie is the co-founder of Ethereum blockchain applications and founder of Akasha, a social network based on the Ethereum-Blockchain and the InterPlanetary File System. Demelza Hays is researching the role of cryptocurrency in asset management in the Business Economics program at the University of Liechtenstein. Dexter Hadley’s expertise is in translating big data into precision medicine and digital health at the University of California. His background is in genomics and computational biology and he has training in clinical pathology. IoT Blockchain Convergence

05:33
Short video slide about the convergence of The Internet of Things(IoT) and the blockchain. Produced by: http://complexitylabs.io Twitter: https://goo.gl/ZXCzK7 Facebook: https://goo.gl/P7EadV LinkedIn: https://goo.gl/3v1vwF Transcription: The internet is evolving into a new technology paradigm based around smart systems, the blockchain, platforms, and IoT in the coming years, these technologies will interact and converge in new and unpredictable ways The convergence of IoT and blockchain will be a major part of this evolution, enabling new automated service systems and business models... but many unresolved issues remain IOT Internet of Things is the merging of our engineered physical environment with information systems to create smart adaptive objects and environments... it is a fast-growing, increasingly complex network of connected physical systems that are able to process information and communicate peer to peer in order to enable common services. These devices are becoming increasingly ubiquitous ranging from autonomous vehicles to sensors monitoring industrial processes, to smart homes and smart cities. IoT is growing rapidly, according to Gartner the global IoT network will connect 26 billion devices by 2020. The development of an IOT infrastructure to our economies will probably be the greatest engineering challenge of our time... dealing with the sheer amount of data due to come on-stream and security are primary concerns... before mainstream Internet-of-Things adoption can really take hold in a safe and sustainable fashion, these, among other issues, will need to be resolved. Blockchain The blockchain is a secure distributed database for recording transactions... millions of computers networked to create a distributed database for recording and authenticating exchanges of value. With the blockchain, value of any kind can be exchanged directly peer to peer without a centralized authority to record and validate the transaction. The blockchain can provide an automated and secure transaction infrastructure for next generation IoT systems... in its capacity to track billions of connected devices and enable the frictionless processing of transactions and coordination between devices. This decentralized approach would eliminate single points of failure, bottlenecks and potentially make data and transactions more secure.... creating a more resilient ecosystem for devices to run on. Likewise, it would automate transactions, enabling fully autonomous service systems; reduce cost and reduce settlement time from days to seconds One example of an IoT Blockchain system is Slock, a door lock that is connected to a smart contract on the blockchain that controls when and who can open the lock. “The owner of a Slock can set a deposit amount and a price for renting his property, and the user will pay that deposit through a transaction to the Ethereum blockchain, thereby getting permission to open and close that smart lock through their smart phone.” - Christoph Jentzsch Such technology bridges the blockchain and the physical world by making automated smart contracts, thus enabling the frictionless and automated temporary exchange of assets such as bikes, parking lots or rooms. "Smart contracts, a feature of “Bitcoin 2.0” technologies such as Ethereum, could soon operate on the Internet of Things (IoT), control objects in the physical world, and power a new decentralized version of the sharing economy, for example sharing services similar to Uber and Airbnb that operate in pure P2P mode without centralized management." - Bitcoin Magazine Leveraging blockchain for IoT offers new ways to automate business processes and build distributed autonomous service systems... "The true value of the underlying technology -- the blockchain -- has only just begun to be explored, and potential applications to the Internet of Things and Smart Systems are vast."

Uses of the Blockchain

17:29
This video is part of a larger online course, "From Barter to Bitcoin: Society, Technology and the Future of Money" run by Prof. Bill Maurer and Prof. Donald J. Patterson In addition to the video on YouTube there is a variety of other content available to students enrolled in the class. "In 2008, a person calling himself or herself or themselves Satoshi Nakamoto released a paper suggesting a system for an anonymous, peer-to-peer alternative money. Bitcoin was born. Although not the first digital currency ever proposed, nor the first challenger to fiat money, bitcoin is the first to have captured the broad imagination of speculators, coders, regulators, criminals and the mass media. This course puts Bitcoin in context: how do we understand money as a social, political and technological phenomenon? From discussions of ancient transactions to the rise of state-issued currencies, we will explore the social and technical aspects of bitcoin, its predecessors and potential successors, and how its features echo aspects of many different historical transaction systems. No prior knowledge of economics or computing is required. There is little academic writing on bitcoin. And this may be the first truly academic class on the topic. We want to put bitcoin in a wider perspective, to reflect on what it means for society, politics and economics, as well as how it helps us think about money both a social and a technical phenomenon. This class is not an advanced seminar on bitcoin--we will not be delving deeply into the inner workings of the system, but instead providing a bird's-eye overview with enough technical detail for you to be able to put media stories, hype and hope around bitcoin in perspective. Similarly, this is not a class in monetary economics--we won't go too deeply into monetary theory or policy, the money supply, or inflation. Instead the class invites you to think more deeply about one of the oldest systems of technology on the planet, and most ubiquitous: money, whether coin, cash, credit card or cryptocurrency, we humans have been making money for most of the past 10,000 years. How we do so in the future is a question bitcoin just maybe helps us answer."

Building Blockchain Applications with Brian Platz

01:32:52
Blockchain is a fickle concept -- easy to grasp and provide use cases, but unnecessarily difficult to leverage in a practical, accessible manner for the typical development team. In this discussion, Brian Platz will show how FlureeDB -- a new graph database -- allows developers to bring blockchain concepts and strategies directly into SaaS. Using live code, he will show how a typical application can leverage blockchain characteristics, by covering the following: Basics of how FlureeDB works under the hood Blocks (transactions kept in an immutable, cryptographically-secured ledger) Time Travel (exposing blocks to reproduce database instances as of any point in time) A demonstration of general query concepts, using GraphQL and FlureeQL to interact with it. Embedding permissions directly into database, and handing every user their own database to query at will A simple real-time React app backed by FlureeDB with no application serves Brian will also discuss the idea of Composite Blockchain Consensus -- in which developers can partition their data to lie on either a public, private, or internal blockchain, but join together to act as one database from an application's point of view. He will extrapolate upon the costs and benefits of using each consensus environment. https://www.meetup.com/triangle-devops/events/246237509/

Peer-to-peer energy trading using blockchains

47:17
Rapid penetration of distributed generation technologies, combined with grid constraints, and disillusionment with non-consumer centric business models, is leading many to explore radically different configurations of the energy system. One such model, ‘transactive energy’, focuses on peer-to-peer energy trading with the role of the energy company replaced with a trustless transaction layer based on distributed ledger (blockchain) technologies. The proponents of transactive energy argue that it provides social, environmental, economic, and energy systems benefits. This lecture will provide a broad introduction to the field, before discussing the opportunities and limitations of this approach within the energy transition.
