Characteristics of Life

07:57
Life is difficult to define, but there are characteristics of life that can be explored! Join the Amoeba Sisters as they explore several characteristics of life. Click "show more" to expand video details to see table of contents & additional information. 👇 We chose not to give a numerical value for how many characteristics of life there are, because we do not want to imply that what we are listing must be a specific order, or that it cannot be expanded upon or include exceptions. Additionally, characteristics can also certainly be titled differently. Our goal is to promote thought and discussion about what it means for an organism to be alive as well as provide characteristics of life that can be explored when trying to study living things. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO: Organization (all life is composed of 1 or more cells) 2:20 Homeostasis 2:54 Metabolism (including need to obtain+use energy) 3:35 Reproduction 4:22 Growth and Development 4:46 Response to Stimuli 5:10 Evolution (occurs in populations, can lead to adaptation) 5:58 While living organisms tend to have ALL of the above characteristics, there are exceptions (such as the 'zonkey' mentioned in video at 6:55). *Quote Citation: Mullen, Leslie. Vascular Plants = Winning! - Crash Course Biology #37

11:54
Hank introduces us to one of the most diverse and important families in the tree of life - the vascular plants. These plants have found tremendous success and the their secret is also their defining trait: conductive tissues that can take food and water from one part of a plant to another part. Though it sounds simple, the ability to move nutrients and water from one part of an organism to another was a evolutionary breakthrough for vascular plants, allowing them to grow exponentially larger, store food for lean times, and develop features that allowed them to spread farther and faster. Plants dominated the earth long before animals even showed up, and even today hold the world records for the largest, most massive, and oldest organisms on the planet. Alleles and Genes

08:07
Join the Amoeba Sisters as they discuss the terms "gene" and "allele" in context of a gene involved in PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) taste sensitivity. Note: as mentioned throughout video, the ability to taste PTC may be more complex than a single gene trait. This video serves as an introduction before exploring Punnett squares in our heredity series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcGDUcGjcyk&list=PLwL0Myd7Dk1FVxYPO_bVbk8oOD5EZ2o5W This video has a handout! http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts While this video only focuses on basic understanding of alleles and genes as well as the ability to taste- or not taste- PTC (phenylthiocarbamide), we encourage learning more! Here is a recommended reading that expands on the genetics involved in tasting PTC and includes some of the history in how it was discovered: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3349222/ Support us on Patreon! http://www.patreon.com/amoebasisters Our FREE resources: GIFs: http://www.amoebasisters.com/gifs.html Handouts: http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts.html Comics: http://www.amoebasisters.com/parameciumparlorcomics Connect with us! The videos center on Pinky's certification and experience in teaching science at the high school level. Pinky's teacher certification is in grades 4-8 science and 8-12 composite science (encompassing biology, chemistry, and physics). Amoeba Sisters videos only cover concepts that Pinky is certified to teach, and they focus on her specialty: secondary life science. For more information about The Amoeba Sisters, visit: http://www.amoebasisters.com/about-us.html We cover the basics in biology concepts at the secondary level.
