The American Meditation Society describes it as “a simple and effortless process where you connect with the silence and peace within yourself”. the benefits of meditation. #1 Meditation Reduces Psychological Stress, Depression and Anxiety Researchers from Johns Hopkins University looked at 47 trials with 3515 participants and found that 2-6 months of meditation programs reduced the anxiety, depression and stress of participants. #2 Meditation Reduces Physical Pain A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that meditation is better than placebo for reducing pain: 75 healthy volunteers were randomly assigned 4 days of either: (1) mindfulness meditation, (2) placebo conditioning, (3) sham mindfulness meditation, or (4) book-listening control intervention. The researchers “inflicted” pain on the volunteers in the form of thermal stimuli. Although all 4 groups experienced pain reduction, the group that underwent mindfulness meditation experienced significantly reduced pain intensity. #3 Meditation Can Slow Alzheimer’s Disease A new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease randomly selected 60 older adults with subjective cognitive decline to beginner meditation for three months. At 3 months, meditation significantly enhanced both subjective memory function and objective cognitive performance. #4 Meditation Improves Working Memory This has been shown in a study of 198 middle school children, who were randomly assigned either mindfulness meditation, hatha yoga, or were a control group. A special computer program assessed the participants’ working memory before and after the intervention, and showed that the mindfulness meditation group had significantly greater improvement in working memory compared to the other groups. #5 Meditation Boosts Immune System A review of 20 randomized controlled trials examined the effect of mindfulness meditation on different biomarkers of the immune system that affect inflammation, immunity, and biological cell aging. The researchers found that meditation was associated with decreased levels of proinflammatory proteins, increased immune cell count and increased activity of the enzyme telomerase, which is an enzyme that helps slow or reverse cell aging. #6 Meditation Lowers Blood Pressure A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association declares that based on the available evidence from the published literature, Transcendental Meditation technique lowers blood pressure and may be considered in clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure. Ok, let’s go through some common questions you may have about meditation: #1. I’m an atheist and/or not spiritual, can I still meditate? Anyone can meditate. Meditation is not about religion or spirituality. It’s a technique or practice of training the mind, where you focus on a single thought, image, object, or feeling. #2. How can I make the time to meditate in my busy schedule? Meditation can be practiced anywhere and anytime. You can meditate for 2 minutes a day if that’s all the time you have. No particular posture is required, as long as you’re comfortable. #3. How often do I need to meditate? The secret to gaining the benefits is to practice it regularly. You would need to meditate everyday in order to get into the habit and rip the benefits. But remember, all you need to start with is few minutes a day. #4. How do I start? Either find a local teacher in your area or Download an app like Calm or Headspace to your phone. And I think they do it because it makes them sound smart, but the reality is meditation is a powerful thing, but let's talk about how it's really working within the body. Here's the big problem that we face. Most of the studies that are out there surrounding the world of meditation are very subjective. They take a look at the masses, but they take a look at an overall end result. And sometime this can lead to us wondering, "Is this truly a physiological change or is it just the kind of people that meditate tend to have this kind of response?" Now before I go any further, I do want to make sure if you haven't already, hit that subscribe button so you can get three to five videos per week. But also, if you're already a subscriber, turn on that little bell so you can turn on notifications, so you know whenever I post a video. So you see what I mean by this, when I'm talking about meditation, is since most of the studies are looking at input and output, what ends up happening after someone meditates, it makes it really, really hard to determine if there's really a change happening within the body. What I mean by that is maybe, just maybe, the kinds of people that are meditating are different kinds of people that would be more receptive to a change. Or maybe they're the kind of people that are more receptive to a change and the fact that they, as soon as they start implementing some kind of different strategy within their life or exercising a different form of discipline, they start having different changes. Now, a lot of the studies really back this up in terms of what can happen when someone starts meditating, but maybe it's just a better practice for life. Now, I'm trying to look at this in a completely unbiased way because I truly am someone that meditates, but I also wonder myself if I'm doing myself good or if I'm just one of the people that has a specific regimen within my life that makes me a little bit more focused. But to back up what I'm saying right now let me give you a couple of studies. Then I'm going to dive into the actual science, into the actual research, from some new studies that are starting to show some really emerging interesting things as far as brain density and gray matter goes. So this first study was published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal. And it took a look at 47 different studies, it's what's called a meta-study where they look at multitudes of studies over a period of time. There is overall 3,515 participants in this meta-study, and what they found in this analysis is that those that meditate ended up having lower levels of anxiety, lower levels of depression and lower levels of pain, markedly. So what we can conclude from this is that perhaps maybe the people that meditate are better at managing these things within their life. But it doesn't necessarily mean that meditation triggered it. Where's the cause and effect? The other study that I want to reference was published in the journal of the Frontiers of Immunology. It took a look at 18 different studies with 846 participants over the course of 11 years. I love studies like this because they look at a wide spectrum of things they look at things throughout different technological advances, they look at things through different advances in our cultures and different mindsets in general. There are plenty of health benefits of yoga that you may not have yet realized. In this video, I will show you exactly why yoga is good for you. Whether it’s Pins on Pinterest, Youtube videos, or those dank beach yoga photos on Instagram, yoga is quickly becoming one of the hottest trend in health and fitness. If you live in a big city it probably feels like there’s a yoga studio on every street corner. Even though many of those pants never make it into the inside of a yoga studio, I’m going to show you some reasons why they should and why yoga is so beneficial to the body. This week on The Health Nerd, you’re going to learn how just a few minutes of yoga every week, will make you more mentality alert, happier, and healthier. First, let’s talk about the science. There are a shocking amount of studies that show the health benefits of yoga for men, for women, and everyone in between. If you think it’s something only for the naturally flexible or for hippies, think again. Here are some of the best benefits of starting a regular yoga practice. #1. Researchers from the University of Washington found that a regular yoga practice helps one Fight sugar cravings. Improve breathing. And help with emotional awareness. They found that yoga gave people a sense of “mindful eating” in which they were consciously aware of the impact the food they ate made on their body. This gave the practioners better control over their eating habits and eating decision. #2. Oxyford University found that people who practice yoga only once a week Slept better. Had lower blood pressure. And were overall less stressed than their non-yoga counterparts. This lowering of cortisol and stress levels led people to be in a more relaxed and happy state of mind. It also helped them manage stressful situations better and not totally freak out. #3. There’s even significant evidence behind how yoga can help people lose weight. Including its ability to balance hormonal levels. Manage cravings (as mentioned before). And burn the equivalent calories of any standard workout routine. It seems that the popular term “yoga body” actually has some evidence behind it. Finally, yoga has proven to help the body become more flexible, relieve migraines, improve posture, de-compress lower back pain, boost immunity and can help you have better sex. Phew*** That’s a lot of health benefits of yoga! So at this point you may be thinking… What’s the best way to get started? Try a 20-minute yoga workout after this video and see how you feel. Psychologist and science journalist Daniel Goleman posits that meditation truly leads you to an "altered state" similar to psychotropic drugs, albeit in a much more lasting and positive way that Goleman calls an "altered trait". Meditation is the opposite of stress in that with meditation we can unlearn stress; consider stress junk food for your brain and meditation as the gym that can repair and reshape you after years of a bad brain diet! We can enter altered states when we get intensely focused on something—deep concentration will bring you into an altered state, sometimes people like to talk how athletes get “into the zone” or they “get into flow”, those are everyday altered states, but they come from being intensely focused on some activity or in the moment itself. And of course altered states can come from drugs or from being in an unusual physiological state. A fever can bring on an altered state. And of course, the ‘60s and ‘70s saw a huge upsurge of people interested in exploring altered states through psychedelics. So altered states are temporary conditions, and when whatever it was that brought on the special state of awareness leaves, then the state fades. So if you get into a flow state rock climbing, when you come down from the mountain, it’s gone—or whatever may have caused it: your temperature might have gone up, and put you into maybe not a pleasant altered state, but still an altered state. The temperature goes down, it’s gone. Altered traits on the other hand are lasting changes or transformations of being, and they come classically through having cultivated an altered state through meditation, which then has a consequence for how you are day-to-day—and that’s different than how you were before you tried the meditation. And what we find in our research, as we say in the book Altered Traits, is that the more you meditate, the more lifetime hours you put into it, the stronger the lasting traits become. When we surveyed more than 6000 peer reviewed articles published to date on meditation we used very strict rigorous methodological standards and we whittled them down to about 60, so maybe one percent of all those articles were really well done. And they document very strongly that altered traits are a lasting consequences of regular meditation and it’s not that it’s the altered states that’s the point. If you look at the classic traditions from which meditation comes to us in the West all of them talk about the quality of being, the person you’ve become. And we see it in the data in many ways. We see it in cognitive changes, we see in behavioral changes and most importantly we see it in neurological changes the neuroscience of meditation is really getting stronger and stronger. It’s pretty spectacular and it shows that brain function and perhaps even structure in the long-term meditators becomes different and becomes different in ways that are actually predicted in classic meditation texts. The good news is that there’s a dose response relationship in meditation. Apparently from what we can tell the longer you do it the more benefits you get. So for example, right from the beginning there are intentional benefits, there are stress benefits, you’re more resilient under stress, but we see this even more strikingly in people who have been longer-term meditators, people who have done meditation daily for say several years. There you see in terms of attention things that don’t show up with the beginner so much you see that, for example, they’re more present. There’s a strict test of this in cognitive science called the intentional blink. The intentional blink means you get lost in one thought and you don’t notice what’s happening the next moment. And this happens, of course, to all of us ordinarily, but longer-term meditators seem to have this less, it means they’re more present to the moment. Longer-term meditators are able to better focus in the midst of distractions. This is kind of common sense because meditation in essence is training in attention.

Daniel Goleman, known for his bestselling books on emotional intelligence, has a long-standing interest in meditation dating back to his two years in India as a graduate student at Harvard. A psychologist who for many years reported on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times, Dr. Goleman previously was a visiting faculty member at Harvard. Dr. Goleman has received many journalistic awards for his writing, including two nominations for the Pulitzer Prize for his articles in the Times, and a Career Achievement award for journalism from the American Psychological Association. Richard J. Davidson is the William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, director of the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, and founder of the Center for Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in psychology and has been at Wisconsin since 1984. Davidson has published more than 320 articles, as well as numerous chapters and reviews, and edited fourteen books. His research has received many awards. Total Body Vinyasa Flow Yoga - 60 Minutes Intermediate Class

This is a 1 Hour Intermediate Total Body Vinyasa Flow Yoga Class. Build strength, increase flexibility, improve balance and enhance mental focus with this full body yoga practice. I recommend this for intermediate students and strong beginners who are comfortable with the vinyasa sequence. There will be options and modifications so you can work at the intensity level that is right for you today. Please continue reading for a class breakdown. We start in Mountain Pose and warm up with a standing flowing sequence. In this yoga video, we flow through modified sun salutations (knee-down chaturanga, cobra waves); but feel free to do your own variation anytime. There's a little bit of everything! We do our standing sequence, balance poses, backbends, forward folds, twists, side stretches and lots of hip opening. Our peak pose is King Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana). It is a deep backbend and hip opener and we prepare for it throughout the class. All the elements we explore during class will be put together in that culminating peak pose. Don't worry, I offer modifications and you can choose the version of the pose that is right for you. We slow down with our seated sequence (Pigeon series, Double Pigeon, Side Stretch, Cowface Legs with Twist) and a Supine Side stretch. There are approximately 5 minutes of Savasana music at the end then we close the practice together. :) Notes: If your knees feel sensitive, make sure you pad your knees with a blanket or towel. Show Notes Enter the Big Sky (Opening) – Meditative practice comes alive through a growing capacity to release our habitual entanglement in the stories and plans, conflicts and worries that make up the small sense of self, and to rest in awareness. In meditation we do this simply by acknowledging the moment-to-moment changing conditions, the praise and blame, the catalog of ideas and expectations that arise. However, we may find ourselves caught in the grip of some repetitive thought pattern or painful situation, or lost in great physical or emotional suffering. Perhaps there is chaos and noise around us. We sit and our heart is tight, our body and mind are neither relaxed nor gracious, and even the witnessing can seem tedious or forced. In this circumstance we can open the lens of attention to its widest angle and let our awareness become like space or the sky. Rest in a mind like vast sky.” “Tonight’s meditation will start by opening our attention, our loving-awareness, not to the breath or body but rather to sound itself – to the doorway of the ear. With it you will hear an invitation to sense the open spaciousness of mind itself, within which we can then become aware of body and breath and all that arises.” “As you listen, let yourself imagine or sense or feel any way you can that your mind is not limited to the size of your head; it is bigger, as big as this whole room and even more vast. Open like the sky, without inside or outside. Let yourself feel like your mind, as open as the sky, allows for the sounds to appear like clouds or bubbles. Rest in the spaciousness, the clear sky of awareness, it is your own true nature – it is home.” “Sounds come and go, thoughts and images arise like clouds in the vast space and sky of awareness. Moods and emotions appear, like weather, for a time and then pass away. Notice too how the body floats in the vast space of awareness. If you sense directly, there is no solid body. There are areas of pressure and warmth, of tingling and coolness, hardness and softness, a field of energy that is ever changing.” “Floating in the vast space of awareness. This is an ancient technique that works wonders in our modern world. Not only does it help us to relax, but it brings clarity to our busy mind. The two breathing exercises shown in this video are what are commonly taught when people come to learn meditation as a tool for increasing mindfulness. Mindfulness is a hot topic at the moment and is being taught everywhere from schools to businesses, it's no longer a practice exclusive to monasteries and temples. People are deriving the great benefits of mindfulness, specifically by practicing mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation, more commonly known in Buddhism as Shamatha or Calm Abiding Meditation, is a technique practiced across all schools of Buddhism, though it is more favored in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. Regardless of your religion or beliefs, this simple meditation technique focuses entirely on one's breath and can therefore be practiced by everyone. When I first began practicing meditation, it was the power and benefits that came from this simple meditation technique that literally changed my life. Suddenly the mental fog that seemed to be the natural state of my mind completely lifted, and I felt this immense peace and spaciousness. Every part of me seemed to exude the inner peace that I was feeling. Even my partner at that time, who I was in the middle of an emotional breakup with, looked at me curiously and asked, "What happened to you?" And I said with all honestly, "For the first time in my life I feel calm." This calmness and happiness continued to increase the more I explored the practice of meditation and the Buddhist teachings, which is why I'm such an advocate for teaching these meditations today.
