Study Outlines what Prayer, Meditation & Yoga can do to the Human Body The medicinal benefits of meditation and yoga are now firmly established in scientific literature. Meditation & Fitness: Scientific Benefits of Meditating- Thomas DeLauer

Click Here to Subscribe: http://Bit.ly/ThomasVid Website: http://ThomasDeLauer.com Get the Clothes I Wear at 25% Off - Use Code: TDSUMMER25 at http://www.Hylete.com Meditation & Fitness: Scientific Benefits of Meditating- Thomas DeLauer… Everyone likes to create content surrounding the world of meditation. And I think they do it because it makes them sound smart, but the reality is meditation is a powerful thing, but let's talk about how it's really working within the body. Here's the big problem that we face. Most of the studies that are out there surrounding the world of meditation are very subjective. They take a look at the masses, but they take a look at an overall end result. And sometime this can lead to us wondering, "Is this truly a physiological change or is it just the kind of people that meditate tend to have this kind of response?" Now before I go any further, I do want to make sure if you haven't already, hit that subscribe button so you can get three to five videos per week. But also, if you're already a subscriber, turn on that little bell so you can turn on notifications, so you know whenever I post a video. So you see what I mean by this, when I'm talking about meditation, is since most of the studies are looking at input and output, what ends up happening after someone meditates, it makes it really, really hard to determine if there's really a change happening within the body. What I mean by that is maybe, just maybe, the kinds of people that are meditating are different kinds of people that would be more receptive to a change. Or maybe they're the kind of people that are more receptive to a change and the fact that they, as soon as they start implementing some kind of different strategy within their life or exercising a different form of discipline, they start having different changes. Now, a lot of the studies really back this up in terms of what can happen when someone starts meditating, but maybe it's just a better practice for life. Now, I'm trying to look at this in a completely unbiased way because I truly am someone that meditates, but I also wonder myself if I'm doing myself good or if I'm just one of the people that has a specific regimen within my life that makes me a little bit more focused. But to back up what I'm saying right now let me give you a couple of studies. Then I'm going to dive into the actual science, into the actual research, from some new studies that are starting to show some really emerging interesting things as far as brain density and gray matter goes. So this first study was published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal. And it took a look at 47 different studies, it's what's called a meta-study where they look at multitudes of studies over a period of time. There is overall 3,515 participants in this meta-study, and what they found in this analysis is that those that meditate ended up having lower levels of anxiety, lower levels of depression and lower levels of pain, markedly. So what we can conclude from this is that perhaps maybe the people that meditate are better at managing these things within their life. But it doesn't necessarily mean that meditation triggered it. Where's the cause and effect? The other study that I want to reference was published in the journal of the Frontiers of Immunology. It took a look at 18 different studies with 846 participants over the course of 11 years. I love studies like this because they look at a wide spectrum of things they look at things throughout different technological advances, they look at things through different advances in our cultures and different mindsets in general. Transcending Sexual Violence Through Yoga: 8 Tools for Teaching Trauma-Sensitive Yoga ZABIE'S TRAUMA-SENSITIVE TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM http://bethechangeyoga.org/?page_id=2172 ZABIE'S INTERVIEW ON HUFF POST LIVE http://www.huffingtonpost.com/zabie-khorakiwala/how-yoga-helped-me-transc_b_5133878.html ZABIE'S WEEKLY CLASS AT BE THE CHANGE http://bethechangeyoga.org/?page_id=632 ZABIE IN THE OC REGISTER http://www.ocregister.com/articles/yoga-610445-felt-sexual.html ZABIE'S FACEBOOK PAGE: TRANSCENDING SEXUAL VIOLENCE THROUGH YOGA https://www.facebook.com/ZabieKhorakiwalaYoga/timeline Zabie Khorakiwala, speaker, educator, and trauma-sensitive Yoga instructor, discusses how to create a safe and supportive Yoga experience for survivors of sexual violence, and emphasizes how Yoga, if taught correctly, can be an extremely powerful healing process for many. This video is designed as a tool and resource for yoga teachers and survivors to learn about trauma-sensitive yoga. Trauma impacts every area of human functioning- physical, mental, behavioral, social, and spiritual. Trauma is a somatic reaction, meaning that survivors register their trauma as sensations in the body. Trauma-sensitive yoga, a practice that creates an environment of safety, choice, and empowerment, gives survivors the tools to find self-regulation and take the steps to heal their bodies. The video covers 8 main components of trauma-sensitive yoga, including: Empowerment-based language No Physical Assists Natural Breathing Class set up is key Giving students space to explore the postures Avoid certain poses that could be triggering Slow down the pace of class Create a safe experience Trauma-sensitive yoga provides a safe and accessible way for survivors to explore their healing internally and uncovers layers of pain to get to the core of who they have always been. It offers them a beautiful form of expression that moves beyond trying to find the words to articulate how they feel. These inward experiences of healing on the yoga mat can elicit positive outcomes and tangible skills that survivors may have been working on for years in cognitive therapy to achieve. Past participants have shared that they were empowered to report to the police what had happened to them because they felt strong and stable in their bodies, others were able to be intimate again with a partner because they felt they could assertively communicate their boundaries, and one participant in particular took complete control of her binge eating because she realized that she did not need to have control in an unhealthy way. Survivors have also shared that the yoga as healing program increased their confidence and self-esteem, helped them learn how to trust themselves and others, allowed them to develop a strong sense of community, helped them incorporate self-care strategies, and empowered them to seek other resources. To support our channel and level up your health, check out: Our Fast Weight Loss Course: http://thehealthnerds.com/the-science-of-fast-weight-loss-course Our Better Health Basics Course: http://thehealthnerds.com/food-health-happiness Our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thehealthnerds/ First, what is meditation? The American Meditation Society describes it as “a simple and effortless process where you connect with the silence and peace within yourself”. the benefits of meditation. #1 Meditation Reduces Psychological Stress, Depression and Anxiety Researchers from Johns Hopkins University looked at 47 trials with 3515 participants and found that 2-6 months of meditation programs reduced the anxiety, depression and stress of participants. #2 Meditation Reduces Physical Pain A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that meditation is better than placebo for reducing pain: 75 healthy volunteers were randomly assigned 4 days of either: (1) mindfulness meditation, (2) placebo conditioning, (3) sham mindfulness meditation, or (4) book-listening control intervention. The researchers “inflicted” pain on the volunteers in the form of thermal stimuli. Although all 4 groups experienced pain reduction, the group that underwent mindfulness meditation experienced significantly reduced pain intensity. #3 Meditation Can Slow Alzheimer’s Disease A new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease randomly selected 60 older adults with subjective cognitive decline to beginner meditation for three months. At 3 months, meditation significantly enhanced both subjective memory function and objective cognitive performance. #4 Meditation Improves Working Memory This has been shown in a study of 198 middle school children, who were randomly assigned either mindfulness meditation, hatha yoga, or were a control group. A special computer program assessed the participants’ working memory before and after the intervention, and showed that the mindfulness meditation group had significantly greater improvement in working memory compared to the other groups. #5 Meditation Boosts Immune System A review of 20 randomized controlled trials examined the effect of mindfulness meditation on different biomarkers of the immune system that affect inflammation, immunity, and biological cell aging. The researchers found that meditation was associated with decreased levels of proinflammatory proteins, increased immune cell count and increased activity of the enzyme telomerase, which is an enzyme that helps slow or reverse cell aging. #6 Meditation Lowers Blood Pressure A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association declares that based on the available evidence from the published literature, Transcendental Meditation technique lowers blood pressure and may be considered in clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure. Ok, let’s go through some common questions you may have about meditation: #1. I’m an atheist and/or not spiritual, can I still meditate? Anyone can meditate. Meditation is not about religion or spirituality. It’s a technique or practice of training the mind, where you focus on a single thought, image, object, or feeling. #2. How can I make the time to meditate in my busy schedule? Meditation can be practiced anywhere and anytime. You can meditate for 2 minutes a day if that’s all the time you have. No particular posture is required, as long as you’re comfortable. #3. How often do I need to meditate? The secret to gaining the benefits is to practice it regularly. You would need to meditate everyday in order to get into the habit and rip the benefits. But remember, all you need to start with is few minutes a day. #4. How do I start? Either find a local teacher in your area or Download an app like Calm or Headspace to your phone. 5 Quick Yoga Poses For THYROID Problems & Disorders

02:56
LEARN how yoga poses can help you to treat THYROID disorders like like Hypothyroidism & abnormal THYROID levels! Can yoga be helpful for thyroid treatment? One of the most common thyroid diseases is Hypothyroidism, which results from the thyroid gland producing an insufficient amount of thyroid hormone known as thyroxine. Major symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, tremor, nervousness, concentration problems, sweating, increase in bowel movement and rapid weight loss. Thyroid problems are more prevalent with the women especially after the pregnancy or menopause. Hatha Yoga offers several poses to stimulate the thyroid gland & treat hypothyroidism and get rid of thyroid problems in women and men effectively. Here is a list of 5 thyroid exercises you can follow to get rid of hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism: # Sharvangasana / Shoulder Stand - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKNoV4whglc # Halasana / Plough Pose - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmerP6a8McE # Bhujangasana / Cobra Pose - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK6OqTIqlZs # Dhanurasana / Bow Pose - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUA8TCfUlgw # Ustrasana / Camel Pose - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XcwltuAtz8 Thyroid Disease: The thyroid or endocrine glands consists of two connected lobes. The thyroid gland is found in the neck, below the thyroid cartilage(which forms the Adam's apple). The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones. It participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the principal ones being triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (sometimes referred to as tetraiodothyronine (T4)). These hormones regulate the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. T3 and T4 are synthesized from iodine and tyrosine. The thyroid also produces calcitonin, which plays a role in calcium homeostasis. People can suffer from hyperthyroidism. An overactive thyroid, is defined as an overproduction of the thyroid hormones T3and T4. This condition is most commonly caused by the development of Graves' disease, an autoimmune disease in which anomalous antibodies stimulate the thyroid to secrete excessive quantities of thyroid hormones. The disease can progress to the formation of a toxic goiter as a result of thyroid growth in response to a lack of negative feedback mechanisms. It presents with symptoms such as a thyroid goiter, protruding eyes (exophthalmo), palpitations, excessive sweating, diarrhea, weight loss, muscle weakness and unusual sensitivity to heat. The appetite is often increased. People can also suffer hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is the underproduction of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Hypothyroid disorders may occur as a result of # Congenital thyroid abnormalities # Autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, # Iodine deficiency # The removal of the thyroid following surgery to treat severe hyperthyroidism and/or thyroid cancer. Typical symptoms are abnormal weight gain, tiredness, baldness, cold intolerance, and bradycardia. Hypothyroidism is treated with hormone replacement therapy, such as levothyroxine, which is typically required for the rest of the patient's life. Yoga for Thyroid Problems: Practicing Yoga for thyroid problems is a natural way to get rid of this medical condition. By practicing yoga regularly, you see normalcy in the production and release of the thyroid hormone. This ensures you reduce the dependency of thyroid medication. However, before starting any physical activity or exercise, always consult a physician. These asanas have been performed by a trained yoga instructor. How to Meditate Correctly: 6 Easy Tips for Beginners

10:02
How to Meditate. Meditation not only reduces stress and improves your physical well-being, it’s also good exercise for the brain. In case you want to change your life for the better and improve your health and try meditation but don’t know what to begin with, this video is just for you. Our simple guide for beginners will teach you the basics of meditation. TIMESTAMPS How to prepare for meditation 0:48 How to master basic meditation 2:46 How to practice concentration meditation 4:14 How to practice mindfulness meditation 4:59 How to practice mantra meditation 5:29 The benefits of meditation 8:05 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Meditation requires a certain atmosphere and a good amount of time, so make sure that you won't be interrupted or distracted by anything or anyone. Put on loose-fitting and comfortable clothes. Stretch before you start meditating to prepare your body for it. -Any kind of meditation is done sitting or lying down. Breathe naturally and focus your attention on your breath and how your body moves each time you inhale and exhale. Don't let any other thoughts distract you. Be sure to do it at the same time each day so that it becomes habitual more easily. -All you have to do is focus solely on one thing. Truly focusing your mind on one thing without letting it wander from one point to another takes time and practice. But it brings wonderful inner harmony and a new sense of calm with it. -Mindfulness meditation encourages you to closely observe all the thoughts that appear in your mind. Your task isn't to judge them, you just have to acknowledge each and every one of them and be aware of their appearance. -Mantra meditation basically involves repeating a specific sound, word, or phrase over and over again until you silence your mind and enter a deeper meditative state. “Om” is said to be the first sound heard at the creation of the universe. Om Tat Sat is yet another mantra you may want to memorize. -Meditation reduces the symptoms of anxiety disorders, such as phobias, social anxiety, and panic attacks, to name a few. Other benefits of meditation that have been confirmed by the scientific community include lower blood pressure and blood cortisol levels as well as improved blood circulation, among others. MBCT Body Scan (Long): Mindfulness Meditation Practice, MBCT Body Scan

35:56
Body Scan (Long): Mindfulness Meditation Practice, MBCT Body Scan Dr Hagen Rampes http://www.mindfulness-healing.co.uk The Body Scan is a classic mindfulness practice (with acknowledgement to Jon Kabat-Zin) which is taught in mindfulness courses. The practice is best done lying down. The intention of the practice is to train one's attention to observe body sensations systematically in different parts of the body. It's best to approach the practice without any expectations. http://www.hagenrampes.com Practising mindfulness as taught in MBCT can prevent depressive relapse in people who have experienced recurrent depression and there is emerging evidence that it is helpful for people who have experienced other mental health problems. The following is an extract from : Prashad J., Rampes S. & Rampes H. (2014). “Benefits of MBCT in treating depression relapse.” The Chronicle of Neurology & Psychiatry 17(2): 3-13. Major Depressive Disorder is among the most prevalent mental disorders, affecting approximately 15% of adults. 50% of patients who recover from an initial episode of depression will have a subsequent episode, and patients with at least two prior episodes have a 70% lifetime risk of relapse. These high rates of relapse have been traditionally managed with a combination of antidepressant medication and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). MBCT has emerged as an alternative intervention for preventing depression relapse. CBT provides acute treatment for mild to moderate depression and helps individuals to recognize that their thinking styles contribute to their sad moods and despair. While CBT’s focus is changing thought content, MBCT involves a characteristic decentering from automatic, negative cognitive routines e.g. rumination. MBCT combines the principles of mindfulness with those of CBT with mindfulness being the core component. Mindfulness is a style of meditative practice that involves the intentional focusing of one’s attention on awareness of the present moment. The attitude that is cultivated during mindfulness practice is one of being a curious observer: noticing body sensations, thoughts, feelings whilst being non-judgemental, non-striving and accepting. It was Zindel Segal (University of Toronto), Mark Williams (University of Oxford) and John Teasdale (University of Cambridge) who developed MBCT. The program was adapted from the 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn (University of Massachusetts Medical School). An expanding body of research literature reveals that mindfulness induces physiological changes in the brain and alters neural processes. The amygdala, cortical midline structure, anterior insula and lateral prefrontal cortex have all been implicated in these changes. A recent randomised clinical trial RCT by Segal (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3311113/) concluded that “MBCT offers protection against relapse/recurrence on a par with that of maintenance antidepressant pharmacotherapy”. A meta-analysis by Piet (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0272735811000973) of 6 studies involving 593 patients found that MBCT significantly reduced the risk of relapse by 35% and for patients who had 3 or more past episodes of depression, the reduction was 44%. They also reported that both MBCT and antidepressant medication reduced relapse risk to a similar degree. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the United Kingdom recommends MBCT as an effective treatment in the prevention of depressive relapses. To support our channel and level up your health, check out: Our Fast Weight Loss Course: http://thehealthnerds.com/the-science-of-fast-weight-loss-course Our Better Health Basics Course: http://thehealthnerds.com/food-health-happiness Sooooo yoga. There are plenty of health benefits of yoga that you may not have yet realized. In this video, I will show you exactly why yoga is good for you. Whether it’s Pins on Pinterest, Youtube videos, or those dank beach yoga photos on Instagram, yoga is quickly becoming one of the hottest trend in health and fitness. If you live in a big city it probably feels like there’s a yoga studio on every street corner. Even though many of those pants never make it into the inside of a yoga studio, I’m going to show you some reasons why they should and why yoga is so beneficial to the body. This week on The Health Nerd, you’re going to learn how just a few minutes of yoga every week, will make you more mentality alert, happier, and healthier. First, let’s talk about the science. There are a shocking amount of studies that show the health benefits of yoga for men, for women, and everyone in between. If you think it’s something only for the naturally flexible or for hippies, think again. Here are some of the best benefits of starting a regular yoga practice. #1. Researchers from the University of Washington found that a regular yoga practice helps one Fight sugar cravings. Improve breathing. And help with emotional awareness. They found that yoga gave people a sense of “mindful eating” in which they were consciously aware of the impact the food they ate made on their body. This gave the practioners better control over their eating habits and eating decision. #2. Oxyford University found that people who practice yoga only once a week Slept better. Had lower blood pressure. And were overall less stressed than their non-yoga counterparts. This lowering of cortisol and stress levels led people to be in a more relaxed and happy state of mind. It also helped them manage stressful situations better and not totally freak out. #3. There’s even significant evidence behind how yoga can help people lose weight. Including its ability to balance hormonal levels. Manage cravings (as mentioned before). And burn the equivalent calories of any standard workout routine. It seems that the popular term “yoga body” actually has some evidence behind it. Finally, yoga has proven to help the body become more flexible, relieve migraines, improve posture, de-compress lower back pain, boost immunity and can help you have better sex. Phew*** That’s a lot of health benefits of yoga! So at this point you may be thinking… What’s the best way to get started? Try a 20-minute yoga workout after this video and see how you feel. I’ll link some of the best places to start for beginners in the description below. If your feeling those yoga vibes and enjoyed it, then you should either: #1. Join a studio #2. Find an online book or program to walk you though it. Yeah, there’s a lot of free info online, but most of it is too jumbled and varies too greatly to get long term benefits from. Also research shows that the act of paying for something makes it wayyyyyy more likely you’ll actually complete it. The investment of money seems to make people stick with workout programs for longer and with more consistency. Making Sense with Sam Harris #111 — The Science of Meditation

01:25:58
In this episode of the Making Sense podcast, Sam Harris speaks with Daniel Goleman and Richard J. Davidson about the current scientific understanding of meditation practice. They speak about the original stigma associated with meditation, the history of introspection in eastern and western cultures, the recent collaboration between Buddhism and western science, the difference between altered states and altered traits, an alternate conception of mental health, “meta-awareness,” the relationship between mindfulness and “flow,” the difference between pain and suffering, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and other topics. Daniel Goleman, known for his bestselling books on emotional intelligence, has a long-standing interest in meditation dating back to his two years in India as a graduate student at Harvard. A psychologist who for many years reported on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times, Dr. Goleman previously was a visiting faculty member at Harvard. Dr. Goleman has received many journalistic awards for his writing, including two nominations for the Pulitzer Prize for his articles in the Times, and a Career Achievement award for journalism from the American Psychological Association. Richard J. Davidson is the William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, director of the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, and founder of the Center for Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in psychology and has been at Wisconsin since 1984. Davidson has published more than 320 articles, as well as numerous chapters and reviews, and edited fourteen books. His research has received many awards. Mindfulness Meditation Breathing Exercises

19:55
This is an ancient technique that works wonders in our modern world. Not only does it help us to relax, but it brings clarity to our busy mind. The two breathing exercises shown in this video are what are commonly taught when people come to learn meditation as a tool for increasing mindfulness. Mindfulness is a hot topic at the moment and is being taught everywhere from schools to businesses, it's no longer a practice exclusive to monasteries and temples. People are deriving the great benefits of mindfulness, specifically by practicing mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation, more commonly known in Buddhism as Shamatha or Calm Abiding Meditation, is a technique practiced across all schools of Buddhism, though it is more favored in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. Regardless of your religion or beliefs, this simple meditation technique focuses entirely on one's breath and can therefore be practiced by everyone. When I first began practicing meditation, it was the power and benefits that came from this simple meditation technique that literally changed my life. Suddenly the mental fog that seemed to be the natural state of my mind completely lifted, and I felt this immense peace and spaciousness. Every part of me seemed to exude the inner peace that I was feeling. Even my partner at that time, who I was in the middle of an emotional breakup with, looked at me curiously and asked, "What happened to you?" And I said with all honestly, "For the first time in my life I feel calm." This calmness and happiness continued to increase the more I explored the practice of meditation and the Buddhist teachings, which is why I'm such an advocate for teaching these meditations today. I hope you enjoy this guided meditation video and derive the same benefits (and more!) that come from practicing meditation and mindfulness. #mindfulness #meditation #samatha Also watch: Letting Go & Developing Unconditional Love with Mindfulness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVJwP8_KxK4 For articles I've written on mindfulness and its benefits, please check out: Mindfulness - Finding Joy In the Present Moment http://www.enthusiasticbuddhist.com/mindfulness-finding-joy-in-the-present-moment/ Mindfulness Training - Live Without Fleeing the Now http://www.enthusiasticbuddhist.com/mindfulness-training-live-without-fleeing-the-now/ Mindful Eating - A Taste of Mindfulness http://www.enthusiasticbuddhist.com/mindful-eating-taste-mindfulness/ 10 Mindfulness Exercises to Live a Mindful Life http://www.enthusiasticbuddhist.com/10-mindfulness-exercises-help-live-mindful-life/ CONNECT WITH ME HERE: Membership site for more teachings and support: https://members.enthusiasticbuddhist.com/ Articles: https://www.enthusiasticbuddhist.com/articles/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheEnthusiasticBuddhist/
Gary Weber - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview

02:00:11
Also see http://batgap.com/gary-weber/ Biographies seem to be of intense interest to many folk. It is not clear what purpose they serve, positive or negative, but as others include them, here is one. It is important to remember that a biography is only one version of the story, always remembered incorrectly, even if the intent is "total" honesty. Recent brain studies have shown that the brain modifies long-term memories and that they are not what was actually recorded by the mind, which was already highly subjective and selective. It is in the third person as it really didn't happen to "me". The author was raised in a devout Methodist home and through early adolescence was involved in religious affairs, giving annual religious talks. From early adolescence until late twenties, he went through a secular life with marriage, two children, undergraduate school, military service, and then graduate school. Following a near-death experience in the military, he became intent on deeply exploring what was possible to bring understanding to life, to personally experience "enlightenment", and to end the mental turmoil and suffering he experienced and saw in those around him. One day, reading what turned out to be a famous Zen poem that he had happened upon "by accident", the normal world fell away and he was in a state never before experienced and beyond any context he knew. After some time the state passed, but he was left with a burning desire to return to whatever it was that he had experienced. He went deeply into Zen meditation, and then various yogas, first so that he could sit for longer periods and then to work with the body to further inquiry. When he finished graduate school and became a scientist at a national research center, he continued to take teachers' training courses and studied with different yoga and Zen teachers and philosophers. Arising daily, hours before work, he would meditate and do yoga asanas, and at night would meditate, do yoga and read philosophy. Several times, he taught yoga and meditation wherever he was, but, despite the interest of the students, he would ultimately stop as he knew that he had not achieved full understanding. This process continued for over 25 years through a series of jobs in different industrial companies eventually reaching the senior executive level of a major company with 1000 folk, 4 research laboratories and a budget of $260M; children were raised, went off to college, etc. During this time, there were many experiences and "enlightenments", but nothing that was lasting, that really touched the core of reality or that ended the suffering brought about by thought. One day, after having consciously surrendered every attachment, and given up completely on being able to reach the final understanding "by his efforts", doing an asana done thousands of times before, a complete shift in consciousness occurred in which self-referential thought fell away and all that happened, happened in stillness and presence. He realized that he was not this body, nor these thoughts, but the undying consciousness behind them. He saw that everything was perfect as it was and that all was somehow within him, and that simultaneously everything was God. This shift was so complete and radical that he soon left his executive position, did many silent retreats and visits to Zen masters, and yoga teachers in the U.S. and India to confirm and deepen his understanding. To further test his understanding, and to see if it was possible to function successfully from an awakened state, he took other complex, high responsibility, upper-level management positions in fields in which he had no previous experience, and was successful. During this last period, at the urging of students, other yoga teachers, and a Zen master, he began teaching again. Since then, he has taught, authored two books, a blog, several articles, numerous videos, interviews, and presentations on nonduality and neuroscience at various conferences and universities. He has been a subject and/or collaborator in cognitive neuroscience and meditation studies at Baumann Institute, IONS, CSNSC, Yale, Johns Hopkins, and Penn State. All of these experiences really happened to no one, and they ultimately really mean nothing. The events were created out of the control of any "I" and arose from nothingness and went into nothingness. Attaching any importance, ownership, or personal causation to these events is incorrect. However your spiritual path unfolds, it will certainly be different from this one. As one of his Zen teachers said frequently, "Whatever happens to you is none of your business". Or, as the poet Rumi has said, "Your life is not your own". Books: Happiness Beyond Thought: A Practical Guide to Awakening Dancing Beyond Thought: Bhagavad Gita Verses and Dialogues for Awakening" (in publishing) Interview recorded 7/13/2013
