The Lost Women In Space...What Did Happen?
Be like SMART BANANA: https://goo.gl/JTfP6L Hey, everyone. It’s me Mr. Banana. What do you imagine when you hear a phrase “a human in space? I’m sure, you think about men. But what about women? Imagine if the first person on the moon had proclaimed, “That's one small step for woman, one giant leap for mankind”. It could have happened. In the late 1950s, the United States government contemplated training women as astronauts, and newly released medical test results show that they were just as cool and tough as the men who went to the moon. They were all extraordinary women and outstanding pilots and great candidates for what was proposed. They came out better than the men in many categories. But then something went wrong... Stay with us to get to know more ;) Music by Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: http://facebook.com/enjoy.science/ The Bright Side of Youtube: https://goo.gl/rQTJZz 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

What If The Sun Went Out for Just One Day
Have you ever wondered what would happen if the Sun just suddenly stopped shining? The first thing that probably comes to your mind is that it would get a whole lot darker and colder. True, but that doesn’t even begin to describe what kind of catastrophic event it would be because eventually humankind would meet its eminent demise. In the first few minutes after the Sun stops burning, life goes on as usual here on Earth because the sunlight itself is still traveling towards the planet. But after 8½ minutes, the skies go black, as if someone just flipped a switch. After an hour, once everybody has realized the situation they’re in, panic ensues on the side of the planet where it's supposed to be daytime. The temperature across the globe drops by several degrees and just keeps going down. One of the worst things is that photosynthesis stops within 24 hours. Within a week or so, the average temperature on the planet falls below zero. Most plants have already perished due to the cold, and heat-loving animals start to disappear shortly after. People build shelters and try to survive the cold and lack of food. They might be more successful in areas with a lot of geothermal activity, such as Iceland. After just one year, the planet might host some types of bacteria that can survive even in unbelievably low temperatures. But other life forms on the surface have been wiped away. Just remember, though, this scenario was just a hypothetical “what if?”. As for the real future of the Earth, it’ll stay firmly “tied” to the Sun. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS The first minutes after the Sun stops burning 0:54 An hour after the Sun went out 2:21 A day after the Sun went out 3:27 A week after the Sun went out 4:14 A year after the Sun went out 5:36 What happens to planet Earth itself? 6:26 The real future of the Earth 8:35 SUMMARY Summary: -8½ minutes after the Sun stopped burning, the whole entire planet would be plunged into darkness. You wouldn’t see the Moon either since there’d be no sunlight for it to reflect. -An hour after the Sun went out, people would start to fall into the depths of depression. The temperature across the globe would drop by several degrees and keep going down. -If the Sun didn’t return after one day, the planet would fall in utter chaos. Every living creature on Earth would start having difficulties due to the diminishing oxygen. -A week after the Sun went out, the temperature all over the world would drop below zero. Most plants would have already perished due to the cold, and heat-loving animals would start to disappear shortly after. People would build shelters and try to survive the cold and lack of food. -After a year without the Sun, the surface of the Earth would become as cold as 100° below zero. The top layers of the seas and oceans would have frozen over by this time, the only survivors among people (if any) would be on the ocean floor, near geothermal vents. There would be no life on the planet. -If the Sun stopped burning, its gravitational pull would vanish, and the Earth would fly away into outer space at the same speed. After 43,000 years, the Earth would near Alpha Centauri, the closest star to us. -As for the real future of the Earth, it’ll stay firmly “tied” to the Sun that will increase in size in several billion years. Hopefully by that time humanity will have found ways to explore and colonize other planets orbiting younger stars. 15 Human Body Parts That Will Disappear One Day
15 Useless Body Parts That We Don't Really Need. We can surprisingly live without these 15 body parts. If you ever thought that all people are built the same, think again. If you thought that all our body parts are vitally important, you were not right again. In the first chapter of The Descent of Man, Charles Darwin identified roughly a dozen body parts that he gleefully described as "useless, or nearly useless." Darwin's catalog was far from complete: our bodies are littered with the parts we don't need. TIMESTAMPS Body hair 1:01 Paranasal sinuses 1:40 Extrinsic ear muscles 2:05 Wisdom teeth 2:45 Neck rib 3:39 Palmaris muscle 4:20 Male nipples 4:54 Arrector pili muscles 5:36 Appendix 6:39 Thirteenth rib 7:40 Coccyx 8:10 Third eyelid 8:57 Darwin's point 9:37 Subclavius muscle 10:20 Toes 10:48 SUMMARY - Apparently, most hair on the human body serves no function, so it is very likely to get extinct in the future! Besides brows perhaps, they keep sweat from our eyes. - And we have a lot: frontal, ethmoidal, sphenoidal, maxillary sinuses. In fact, no one knows why we still have these troublesome mucus-lined cavities! - Some animals, rabbits, and dogs, for example, can move their ears independently. How does it happen? Thanks to these exotic-sounding muscles. But you know what? People also have them! - As human jaws have become smaller in the process of evolution, the rest of people simply don’t have space in their mouths for these teeth! Back in the days when toothpaste didn’t exist, they were kind of backup grinders. - Have you never heard about neck ribs? It is a set of cervical ribs, possibly a leftover from the age of reptiles. They still appear in less than 1 percent of the population. - There is a long narrow muscle running from the elbow to the wrist. It is already missing in 11 percent of humans today, so it is a safe bet that with time it will disappear completely. - Nipples are present in both males and females. Men generally lack the necessary levels of prolactin to stimulate lactation and typically cannot produce milk. - Goosebumps are the indicator of them at work. We get them when we are frightened, amazed or cold. Apparently, we have lost most of the fur and acquired warm clothes. We don’t need any additional protection from freezing temperatures or the source to intimidate our rivals anymore. - Some research shows that an appendix can be, in fact, useful! It might store special bacteria good for those who suffer from diarrhea. - Our closest cousins, chimpanzees, and gorillas have an extra set of ribs. What about humans? Most of us have 12, except for 8% of adults - they have an extra one! - It's all that is left of the tail that most mammals still use for balance and communication. What is more, there have been 100 documented cases of babies who were born with a tail. What is the purpose of a tail-bone? There is none. - A third eyelid, you will ask, do we have it? Yes, we, humans, retain a tiny fold in the inner corner of the eye. It is what is left from a membrane birds, and mammals have had for protecting the eye and sweeping out debris, at the same time providing visibility. - Darwin's point is a small folded point of skin toward the top of each ear that is occasionally found in modern humans. It may be a remnant of a larger shape that helped to focus distant sounds. Nowadays only 10% of people have this “greeting from the past.” - Subclavius muscle is a small muscle which stretches under the shoulder from the first rib to the collarbone. It would be beneficial if humans were still walking on all fours. - Scientists have found out that humans used to walk and balance more in the middle of their feet, but now we have gradually transferred to balancing more toward the side of our big toe. 13 Scariest Theories That'll Make Your Blood Run Cold
Where did we come from? Where are we headed? What is our world? Are we alone in the universe? When the mental gears really start moving, people can come up with theories that are downright terrifying! In this video, you'll learn about 13 of the scariest theories that’ll make you question everything you thought you knew about your reality. TIMESTAMPS: The Great Filter 1:28 Higher dimensional beings 2:33 False Vacuum 3:23 We're living in a black hole 4:10 White Holes 4:50 The Multiverse Theory 5:25 Brain in a Vat 6:03 Roko's Basilisk 6:48 The Transcension Hypothesis 7:21 The Terror Management Theory 8:00 The Sixth Mass Extinction 8:35 The Fermi Paradox 9:17 The Simulation Theory 10:00 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - According to The Great Filter theory, somewhere out there exists a Great Filter. The main purpose of this Filter is to stop those civilizations that advance to the level of star colonization. - What if a 4D being was looking at you from their four-dimensional world? Just like a 2D person, you wouldn't be able to notice this creature in your 3D world. - The False Vacuum theory says that our universe exists in a false phase state, which means that it's just a temporary thing. What's more, it's only a small part of a larger universe. - You’re probably well-aware that black holes suck in everything around them. But what happens to the stuff it engulfs? What if a black hole already swallowed us up long ago? Surprisingly, some physicists deem this theory pretty plausible. - While black holes engulf all matter so that even light can’t escape, white holes are quite the opposite. These formations are believed to spit out everything that black holes suck in. - The Multiverse theory claims that there might be countless other realities besides our own. - The Brain in a Vat theory says that you very well could just be a brain in a jar. Something is feeding you false impulses, and you're hallucinating your whole life and reality. - Roko's Basilisk is a hypothesis that some future super-powerful artificial intellect can retroactively punish people who struggled against it in the past (which is our present) or even those who did nothing to help bring it about. - The Transcension Hypothesis states that a civilization eventually gets to a certain intellectual level. - According to the Terror Management theory, everything we do comes from the fear of death. Our wishes and motivation are based on just one thing, and it’s the idea that one day we will stop existing. - The Sixth Mass Extinction theory is probably the most horrifying. Yet, unfortunately, it’s the most probable scenario. Some biologists believe that humanity is headed for or already passing through the sixth mass extinction - The Fermi Paradox theory explains why we probably wouldn't recognize an advanced alien civilization even if it was right under our nose. - According to the Simulation theory, we all live in an incredibly complex computer game. #spacefacts #blackhole #greatfilter Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

Stephen Hawking’s 7 Predictions of Earth’s Demise in the Next 200 Years
What will happen to our planet in the next 200 years? The most famous scientist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, who has made profound and inspiring discoveries, predicted an extremely dark and pessimistic future to the Earth and its inhabitants. Here are some of Hawking’s most terrifying predictions on how and when our world will meet its demise. Since scientists started toying with genetically engineered viruses to treat human illnesses, they’ve also discovered other possible uses for them. Nowadays, pharmacists are even combining several deadly viruses into a single shot and doing some weird stuff with DNA mixing. Hawking was a firm believer in extraterrestrial life, and he was convinced that they will eventually invade our planet. And no, unfortunately, they probably won’t come in peace. In his final work, A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation, completed just two weeks before he died, Hawking predicted that our universe will eventually fade into darkness as all the stars run out of energy. Although Hawking's life basically depended on artificial intelligence, he didn't trust it at all. He once said that it might just be “the worst invention in the history of our civilization” because it’ll probably replace humans altogether. Hawking added that global warming will make the conditions on Earth similar to those on Venus. To save ourselves from problems like overpopulation (and the scarcity of resources that comes with it), pandemics, and pollution, we have to discover new worlds and become a multi-planetary species. Music: Diamond Ortiz - Crock Pot Gonna Onyekwe - Destination Unknown Doug Maxwell/Media Right Productions - Hipsters Hopping Doug Maxwell - Light Years Away William Rosati - Rounds Francis Preve- Stranger Danger https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Genetically modified vaccines will backfire on us. 1:04 Aliens will invade our planet. 2:36 The Universe will come to an end. 3:52 Robots will replace humans. 4:21 Nuclear weapons will destroy humanity. 5:32 We'll need to find another planet to live on. 6:03 The Earth will combust into a ball of fire. 9:17 SUMMARY -We still don't fully understand the long-term damage genetically engineered vaccine concoctions might have. -Chances are that cosmic beings will find our floating rock in space and they’ll most likely want to either destroy us or study us like lab rats. -Hawking predicted that our universe will eventually fade into darkness as all the stars run out of energy. -The scientist believed that artificial intelligence could eventually outsmart and outperform humans or, worse, decide to get rid of us. -The development of militarized technology and weapons of mass destruction could lead us to disastrous consequences, which would mean the end of our world. -According to Hawking, we have to find another planet to live on within the next 100 years. Otherwise, we’ll die out as a species because Earth has already reached “the point of no return”. -Global warming will make the conditions on Earth similar to those on Venus. The average temperature will be about 480°F. Our planet will burst into flames in less than 600 years. Subscribe! Because SMART IS THE NEW SEXY: https://goo.gl/JTfP6L How big is the universe? Have you ever wondered before falling asleep if there’s life on other planets? Or in other galaxies far far away? So far human exploration of the space showed no signs of any form of life. Although the technologies develop really fast and we expect the human mission to Mars anytime soon, there will be decades before we decode at least some of the space mysteries. For now, we are alone. And we are so small. We in Smart is the New Sexy invite you to take a visual trip through our Solar System and through other big galaxies to comprehend how huge space is and how small you are in it. Come on, let's go! But before we can grasp how huge space is we must realize just how small our planet is. We live on a rock floating through the empty space at a great speed. It’s pale blue dot like the Voyager 1 saw us leaving the Solar System. We are small… The size of the Earth around the equator is almost 24,901 miles, and in the north-south direction, it’s 24,859 miles. Immense compared to your shoe size for example. In our Solar System Earth is the 4th largest planet. Yeah, don’t laugh, among 8 planets we are the 4th. Human Experimentation: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
In the early days of the space race, agency researchers in Russia and at NASA really weren't sure all what would happen to an astronaut in space. They didn't know if a human mind could handle actually seeing Earth or what would happen to the human body when exposed to long periods of weightlessness. Would their blood forget which way to pump? Would their eyeballs shift or their inner ears wig out? They sent up mice and monkeys and dogs, to see what happened, and in 1961, the Russians strapped a man to a rocket headed for orbit. Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space. The ultimate human guinea pig, he survived, becoming an international hero. Like SciShow? 10 Things That Will Happen When Humans Go Extinct
What will the Earth be like when humans go extinct?? Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg This topic is rather morbid, but we do have a wild fascination for theories as to how our world could end. We have been taught for years that everything that begins must have an ending, and considering how long Earth has been around, the clock is ticking for our home planet. And because we are more fascinated by how things will end than just accepting our inevitable demise, hundreds of theories have emerged in order to try to hypothesize and make sense of it all. Just as the dinosaurs are extinct, everyone wonders for a period of time (or two) just how far away humanity is from extinction, and just how it will happen. Some of the theories are fairly peaceful, but there are others that are truly terrifying. Here are some of the most devastating ways that humanity could end. The first theory is pretty real since we are in the midst of it; global warming. The years 2005 and 2010 were the warmest years compared to the previous century, and the result of global warming is bizarre climate change. With the funky seasons and weather conditions that have plagued us in the 21st century, one has to wonder if maybe we’ve gone too far with our pollution and are on our way to meet our end because of our own foolish actions. The next theory is death by asteroid, which is pretty scary considering that we don’t have much control over the course of massive rocks that could hit our planet at any moment. Our Earth and Moon have been hit with asteroids before, which is speculated as to that was what killed the dinosaurs. The next thing that could wipe out humanity is a pandemic. With the Ebola scare, and other unknown illnesses that are killing people left and right, it is rather easy to spread a massive virus and do some population control. While vaccines are being perfected every day, they have to be updated annually because viruses and diseases are constantly adapting and evolving. That is scary in of itself right there. Speaking of illnesses, there has even been several rumors that the government is working on mind-control viruses as a biological weapon, thus setting off a zombie apocalypse. But let us not forget that we can also literally kill ourselves with nuclear war. With governments of various countries constantly pointing weapons at each other with veiled threats (for now), it’s only a matter of time before one side starts firing and sets off a rapid fire exchange of nuclear weapons, thus killing millions and setting off a nuclear winter that could last for years. The next thing that could kill humanity is something that you are using right at this very moment; your computer. Computers are being used in almost every aspect of everyday life from work, to home, medical facilities, shopping, dining, and more. What would happen if computers would ever become aware? It’s not like there is anything that humanity could give back to them in order to survive. From Mother Nature to our own hand, there are so many devastating ways that humanity could end. The question and mystery that remains is the how. YOU vs XENOMORPH - How Can You Defeat and Survive It (Alien Movie)
What if you came face to face with the xenomorph from the movies Alien? Could you defeat it? Imagine you are happily cruising along space in your very own mining ship when suddenly you pick up a faint distress signal from far away. Checking your spaceship's digital atlas, you discover that the signal is coming from a colony on a planet called “LV-426”- hmm, where have you heard that name before? Landing on this distant moon you exit your spaceship hoping to rescue some desperate colonists- only to come face to face with the galaxy's most formidable predator. Hello and welcome to another special episode of The Infographics Show- today we're putting you up against the most perfect organism in the universe in, Could you defeat it? You vs a xenomorph. Xenomorphs, or Aliens, are a parasitic species who's real origins are unclear. Some believe that Xenos were genetically engineered by an ancient space-faring civilization known as the Engineers, or Mala'kak. The Mala'kak may have used Xenomorphs to terraform planets by wiping out all large species and then starting fresh with their own genetically engineered creations, or they may simply have been a biological weapon meant to 'disinfect' experiments they think went wrong, or to use against their enemies. Others however believe that Xenomorphs evolved in a dark, distant corner of the galaxy and were discovered by the Engineers and other space-faring civilizations. This Is What Would Happen If Humans Lived In Space
This Is What Would Happen If Humans Lived In Space What would happen to humans if we lived in space? Subscribe: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- People have postulated the possibility of moving humanity into space for decades. Science fiction is full of novels, movies, and TV shows that show an alternate reality in which Earth was destroyed and people had to move to space to keep humanity alive, or humans finally started to colonize beyond our own atmosphere. But what exactly would happen to us if we left the planet? It depends on where we go. We could spend a few millennia terraforming Mars or the Moon, or we could build space habitats that don’t orbit far from our home. Whatever we choose to do, the work involved would be different, and our bodies would respond differently. Our bones and muscles would take quite a hit from the difference in acceleration due to gravity. Exposure to radiation is definitely a cause for concern as well, but if we managed to somehow give a magnetic field to the Moon or Mars, they would be rendered suitable candidates for the space colonists. And most importantly, these environmental changes could have a serious effect on the definition of human. Stay tuned to learn about the effects of living in space on the human body and how it could even lead to the existence of a new species of human, separate and independent from Earth humans. Have you ever read or watched any sci-fi stories about the colonization of space by humanity? The Solar System Is Not Like You Think It Is
The Earth is round, Mercury is the hottest planet, and the Sun is yellow. It would seem that these are all simple, undeniable facts known even to those with no real knowledge of astronomy. However, it’s time to think again. TIMESTAMPS Does the Moon have a dark side? 0:23 Is the temperature of Mercury higher than on other planets? 1:01 Is the Sun just a big ball of fire? 2:01 Is the Sun really yellow? 2:50 Would a human being explode in space without a space suit? 3:41 Is the Earth further from the Sun in winter than in summer? 4:48 Is the Earth perfectly spherical? 6:03 SUMMARY - The Sun shines and warms both the visible and invisible parts of the Moon. The truth is that the period the Moon takes to revolve on its axis coincides with the amount of time it takes to orbit the Earth. That’s why we only see one side of it. - Mercury is closest to the Sun; therefore, its surface temperature must be higher than all the other planets. However, the hottest planet in the Solar System is actually Venus, despite the fact it’s 31,070,000 miles (50 million km) further away from the Sun than its neighbor. - What we think of as fire is, in fact, energy in the form of heat and light, produced by the thermonuclear reactions occurring in the star’s core. A thermonuclear reaction involves changing some elements into others, and it’s accompanied by the ejection of heat and light energy. - Why do human eyes see the Sun as yellow? It’s all down to Earth’s atmosphere. As is well known, light which has a long wavelength, in the yellow and red part of the spectrum, passes through the atmosphere best of all. Light in shorter wavelengths, in the green to violet part of the spectrum, gets dissipated to a greater degree by the atmosphere. - Our skin is flexible enough to keep all of our internal organs in place. The walls of the blood vessels would also prevent the blood from boiling thanks to their elasticity. Moreover, in the absence of external pressure in the space environment, the temperature at which blood boils rises to 115°F, which is significantly higher than the temperature of the human body. - The axis of the planet, which passes through the North and South Poles, is not exactly perpendicular to its orbit and the Sun’s rays which fall on it. In turn, for half of the year, a large proportion of the Sun’s warmth falls on the southern hemisphere, while in the other half it falls on the northern one, which produces a change of seasons. - The shape of our planet is constantly changing due to the constant movement of the continental plates. Of course, the rate at which they move is tiny — on average about 2 inches (5 cm) a year. However, this still has an effect on the planet’s "appearance," which is, in fact, far from perfectly round. A Unique Creature on Earth That Can Never Be Killed
Earth is the only planet in our solar system, our galaxy, and potentially our entire universe that sustains life. Us humans believe we’re practically indestructible, but it turns out there’s a unique creature tougher than us that can’t be killed. Meet the tardigrade, one of the most resilient animals in the world – and possibly the universe. TIMESTAMPS It’s also called the water bear. 1:18 It’s really small. 2:20 It’s really, really old. 3:08 It can live anywhere. 4:02 It’s (mostly) harmless. 5:00 It’s practically unkillable. 6:04 It survives extinction events. 10:45 It might survive on another planet. 12:33 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -A tardigrade is commonly called a water bear because it is most often found in water, where it prefers to dwell, and because of its slow gait, which resembles that of a bear. -The biggest full-grown tardigrade is about 0.5 mm or about 1/50 of an inch, which is smaller than flea and tick larva. -The earliest fossils we have of the tardigrade species date back to the Cambrian period, some 530 million years ago. -Tardigrades have been found on the high-altitude peaks of the Himalayas, in deep trenches in the ocean, in mud volcanoes, and in tropical rainforests. -These unique creatures move into a new environment and help to establish an ecosystem, not unlike a gold prospector setting up shop out in the frontier. -Many tardigrades can enter a dehydrated state to survive almost any dangerous outside environment. They curl up into a barrel shape, their bodies become glass-like, and they put themselves in stasis, during which time they’re pretty much indestructible. -The tardigrade has survived all possible extinction events, from the Ordovician-Silurian extinction 440 million years ago all the way up to the extinction events that took out the dinosaurs. -The conditions on Mars are within the tardigrades’ capabilities to survive, assuming that a sufficient amount of water exists to support them. How We First Saw the Earth From Space
The first time humans saw the whole earth from space was thanks to a photograph taken by astronaut Bill Anders on the 24th December 1968, during the Apollo 8 mission. The photo, known as 'Earthrise' for the first time showed us what our planet looks like from space. Its vulnerability and beauty gave rise to a new global consciousness. We should take care to pin it to the fridge and apply its lessons to our lives. It came into being almost by accident, when on the morning of Christmas Eve 1968 one of the astronauts aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft, Bill Anders, turned the camera from the supposed object of their mission – the moon – towards a spherical, brightly glowing, blue object rising above the lunar horizon. This was Earth, our irreplaceable planetary home. Suddenly humankind was able to view its habitat with a gaze hitherto reserved for the entity we have termed God…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/p8P8dN MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/gxHkeS Watch more films on CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ You can also download our App from the Apple Store here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/the-school-of-life/id1182058270?mt=8https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/the-school-of-life/id1182058270?mt=8 CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Mad Adam Films http://madadamfilms.co.uk/ #TheSchoolOfLife

The first planets were discovered through the strange movement they exhibited in the night sky, different to the other stars. Finally, in 1994, the first planet outside of our solar system was discovered. Since then the search for planets, stars and life has led scientists to some weird discoveries in our universe The most bizarre planets in the known universe sometimes sound more like than science fiction than hard science, occasionally confounding researchers simply through their existence. This Week @NASA
On May 16, NASA held a media event at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, to highlight the recent arrival of the barge Pegasus with the first core stage test article for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. NASA modified Pegasus to accommodate the massive SLS core stage, increasing the barge's length and weight-carrying capacity. The core stage test article – manufactured at the agency’s Michoud Assembly Facility, in New Orleans – is the first of four core stage test articles scheduled to be delivered to Marshall for testing. This delivery marks a critical milestone toward Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), the first flight of SLS and NASA’s Orion spacecraft. It also brings the agency a step closer to sending humans to deep space destinations – including Mars. Also, Lightfoot Discusses Future Exploration Goals, Ochoa, Foale Inducted into Hall of Fame, and Virtual Tour of Meteorite Lab!

Scientists Tackle Major Challenges to Sending Astronauts to Search for Life on Mars
An international team of researchers, which includes scientists from McMaster's School of Geography & Earth Sciences, NASA, and others, is tackling one of the biggest problems of space travel to Mars: what happens when we get there? A series of articles published on March 6th in a special edition of the journal Astrobiology, focuses on the scientific, logistical, operational and communications challenges of sending astronauts to deep space. It is the culmination of years of work in NASA's BASALT research program, or the Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains, which involves geologists, microbiologists, geneticists, engineers and astrobiologists from all over the world. One of the biggest challenges the team is investigating is how best to conduct meaningful science in such harsh and dangerous conditions—where time and resources are highly restricted—and how to send valuable information back to Earth to enable input from an Earth-based science support team. Researchers simulated mission conditions on Mars in several scenarios which included conducting field work in the unforgiving, Mars-like terrain of Craters of the Moon National Park Monument and Preserve in Idaho and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These regions are rich in basalt, a fine-grained rock similar to rock found on Mars. Scientists hope samples can provide important clues in the ongoing search for life on Mars.
