Watch more How to Study videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/353530-How-to-Write-a-Summary A summary condenses the author’s main purpose and support so that someone else gets the information as it was intended. Plus, you avoid sounding as if you’re making it up. Step 1: Scan the text Scan the text and make notes on paper. Read closely to absorb the author’s tone and central ideas, and then comb back through to clarify points. Step 2: Outline the idea Outline the main idea of each section in your own words. Include only meaningful details and proofs, organizing them from most to least important. Step 3: Develop your thesis Develop a thesis, summarizing the main points of the piece. Be sure to include the author’s name and the title of the work right away. Tip Avoid using your own opinions or interpretations, no matter how familiar the subject may be. Step 4: Arrange information Arrange the information to clearly support the author's points, adding details to each section. Improve the flow of ideas with transitions that connect sections. Step 5: Cite properly Be sure that sources are cited properly. Paraphrase and don’t use the author’s words if you can help it. Make sure you haven’t wandered off topic. Tip Ask who, what, why, when, where, and how questions to be sure you have represented the author’s work faithfully. Step 6: Make final corrections Correct your grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Dignify your work and that of your subject’s with the care good scholarship demands. Step 7: Ask for criticism Ask a hyper-critical friend to read your work. Be receptive and not over-sensitive – if they can’t identify your main points, you need to revise. Did You Know? More than half of students say that their schoolwork requires daily writing.

2.1 How To Write A Great Article Summary

07:39
Exercise: Several times a week ( a minimum of 1), read a New York Times (or other publication with good, challenging writing) article and write a brief 1 paragraph summary. Make sure to pick an article that is both DIFFICULT & BORING because that's how you actually IMPROVE the skill. Besides, if you take any exams-- the SAT, ACT, SHSAT, or just have to to any reading comprehension in general, you'll often be presented with uninteresting and tricky writing-- writing that's meant to throw you off your game and fall asleep. Basics: Imagine I’m the President and you’re giving me a 2 minute briefing. There's only 2 things that are needed: -all the essential information has been presented -no unessential information has been presented Format: 4-6 sentences, which is fairly brief (we’ll focus on brief because I believe that builds the skill of summarizing better-- later you can vary this exercise by also trying extended summaries of, say, 7-8 sentences or even 2 paragraphs). -1st sentence: title, author, and main idea (the most important part) -2-4: Details: the Ws- who, what, where, when, why, how (though not necessarily all the Ws) -5: Wrap-up: A concluding sentence (what constitutes a good one depends on the article). My favorite technique is "Why do we care?" Zoom out to reality and tie it in to a larger picture, but can also end with a question, a fun fact, or other techniques. 2 concepts (2 separate videos on these to come in the near future-- see 2.2, and 2.3) that will help you write better summaries, essays and more (better= clear and logical): -FUNNEL (will help summaries be more logical and interesting) & -BULLSEYE (will help summaries be more clear and accurate) Fun Twist-- Creative Summary Exercise: Summarize an article you've read from 4 perspectives: a news reporter (standard), a person at the scene (bystander), an *alien ambassador, and a central actor on the scene. (You can create your own perspective idea as well-- don't feel limited by these 4) Enjoy! For best results, I recommend following the series in order using this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtMJUI0rs4e6rIcusGJLgNOu5ppwWc5Jz

Writing a Summary - 5 EASY steps for kids!

09:00
Writing a Summary - http://www.singlishtoenglish.com/writing-a-summary/ - writing process for kids In this video. I give you 5 easy steps for writing a summary. 1. Do a quick read of the passage, taking note of the story content as you do this. Understand what the story is about. 2. Read the passage again, highlighting ONLY the main points in each paragraph and the main characters. Minor details and explanations should be left out of summary writing. It might be a good idea to highlight the main characters in a different color from the main points of the passage. Less confusing. 3. Take note of the what, when, where, and who of the passage. 4. Write out your summary based on these notes. 5. Check your summary, make changes as needed and if there is a word count, check you are within the word limit If there is a word count, then you must not go over that at all. It's best if the word count for the summary is as close to as possible to the maximum number of words given. This will mean your summary content is accurate. Eg: Word count is 120 words. Your summary should not exceed this or fall way short. Best is to have a summary of around 115 to 118 words. Summary exercise courtesy of TKPS, based on The Witches by Roald Dahl When? (When did this scene take place?) - On the first morning after the author's arrival. Where? (Where did this take place?) - At the hotel Who? (Who were the characters?) - The author, chambermaid, Mr Stringer and Grandma What? (What happens in each paragraph of the passage?) : Beginning - On the first day, the chambermaid saw one of my mice in my hotel room and shrieked loudly. Middle - I was reported to Mr Stringer, the hotel manager. There was an unpleasant scene with Mr Stringer, Grandma and me. End - Mr Stringer would not allow mice in the hotel. Grandma said the hotel was full of rats. Mr Stringer said there weren't any rats in the hotel but Grandma said that she saw one that morning. The full summary as written: On the first day, the chambermaid saw one of my mice in my hotel room and shrieked loudly. I was reported to Mr Stringer, the hotel manager. There was an unpleasant scene with Mr Stringer, Grandma and me. Mr Stringer would not allow mice in the hotel. Grandma said the hotel was full of rats anyway. Mr Stringer said that there no rats in the hotel but Grandma said that she saw one that morning. Word count: 77 words Total number of words in the passage: 158 Please leave me a comment. Literature Review Preparation Creating a Summary Table

04:44
This video shows you exactly how to create a summary table for your research articles. It outlines what information should go in the table and provides helpful summary hints. eBook "Research terminology simplified: Paradigms, axiology, ontology, epistemology and methodology" on Amazon: http://amzn.to/1hB2eBd OR the PDF: http://books.google.ca/books/about/Research_terminology_simplified.html?id=tLMRAgAAQBAJ&redir_esc=y http://youstudynursing.com/ Once you have found literature that you want to include in your review the task of summarizing it can be daunting. It is helpful to use a data extraction tool while you are reviewing each article. Then, creating a table that captures key points you need to consider for your analysis will make your summary more accurate, effective and complete. This step is so important that I get my students to do it for marks. If you are working on a literature review, trust me, you don't want to skip this step. If you do, the review will end up taking a lot longer to complete and you will be more likely to miss important information. Also, if you are working on a team these tables are absolutely essential for communication and collaboration. To set up your table, first identify the number of columns you think you will need. I usually start with seven. You can add more later if you need to, but I find it easier to remove information before publication than to add it. The headings in your table will depend on the information you need to collect, which depends on the purpose of your review. In this video I will go over the ones I recommend using as well as a few other helpful options. In the first column, always list the author and the year of publication. To make things easier, you will also want to save your articles in a folder on your hard drive by the author and year of publication. I will often also note the country that the study was conducted in. That way it is easy for me to quickly identify if more research is needed in my country specific to the topic of inquiry. You can also note the country later in the table. Discipline may also be useful to note either in the same column or a separate one if you are looking at a multi-disciplinary topic such as hand hygiene practices. It can help you identify if you need to consider looking in other areas to capture missing disciplines or if there is a lack of evidence particular to a discipline. However, if your literature review is focused on a particular discipline, such as nursing, than this information would not add anything to your table and should not be used. Remember to keep your table as concise as possible. Include the topic or focus of the study as well as the research purpose or research question in the next column. The focus of the article is absolutely critical to your summary table. Remember to be concise and specific. I also like to quote the purpose of the article here. Noting the conceptual or theoretical framework will help to inform you of the perspective the researchers are taking. You may also notice common ones that you could consider for your future research proposal. In any review it is important to note the paradigm and methods used. Typically, for first year students I only expect them to identify the paradigm as Qualitative or Quantitative. In upper years of the program and when I publish I expect a more specific identification of the methodology. Sometimes, depending on the purpose of the review, I use separate columns for the design, sampling method and data collection or analysis methods. For pragmatic reasons I still limit the total number of columns in my table to seven or eight. The context, setting and sample should also be noted. This is another location that the country that the study was conducted in can be listed. Just don't put the same information in two spots. Be concise and consistent. Whenever you are putting more than one type of information in a column make sure you are also consistent in the way and order it is listed. For example, always note the setting then the sample in this column. Use a bulleted list or separate information by paragraphs or periods. Key Findings need to be presented in a brief way. Make sure you are not simply writing everything down. What findings are of particular interest to the focus of your literature review? The more concise you are the better. Stay focused. Noting the gaps in the research will help you think about what research needs to be done. Make note of the limitations of the study you are reading as well as areas for future research. This step can be particularly useful when laying the foundation for your next research project. Many published reviews now include all or part of these summary tables. Go take a look at what has been published for more examples of how to construct your table. Music By http://instrumentalsfree.com

I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined. Today I have 13 tips for writing a great academic article or paper. First, let us start before any writing has occurred. Think about whether the effort is justified. Is the topic new and novel in the field? Is the article about a particularly timely topic in your area? Don’t just write an article because you can; rather look to make a difference. Second, think about where you want to submit the manuscript. Be a loyal reader of any journal you intend to submit to; do not just pick one out of an online search. Know the mission of the publication. This will allow you to focus your writing on that journal. Third, follow the instruction or guidelines for authors for that journal very closely, particularly in regard to length and format. Now, let us look at mechanics. The fourth tip is to follow closely the appropriate style manual. Whether the AMA, APA, Chicago style guides, or others, you will benefit by understanding these guidelines in your field. Fifth, short and concise is always better. This applies to the entire manuscript but also to sentence length and paragraph length as well. No one ever said, “I wish that paper was longer.” Ruthlessly delete all extraneous materials. Sixth, follow accepted practices in regard to grammar and style. If you do not know the expected practices find someone that does. Also, read the articles in the journals you are submitting to so you can understand the tone of these articles. Now, let us look at the content presentation. Seventh, when the paper is written, review the abstract very, very closely. Many people will read only the abstract and it needs to be flawless. Make sure it conforms to the abstract format in your intended publication. Eight, consider the article title very carefully. Avoid a boring title which is really just a label. Consider something thought provoking or maybe even provocative, but do not stray so far that it is corny or sensational. Ninth, make sure any tables, charts, images, or graphics are essential and created in a quality fashion. Does each item standalone by itself? Lastly, let us consider the review of the manuscript before submission. My tenth tip is to read the final manuscript aloud several times. This helps for clarity and language. Eleventh, aside from having the content reviewed by your peers before submission, have others outside your field read the paper as well. Listen closely to any suggestions they have. Twelfth, avoid any hint of plagiarism. Always cite your sources. Never take any passage or ideas from others. An error here can affect your career or reputation. Finally, I know many people that watch these videos are non-English language speakers that may be submitting to an English language journal. If so, I suggest having a native English language colleague or speaker read and help craft the paper before submission. This will likely increase the quality of the final product and therefore increase the likelihood of acceptance. If you do not know anyone to help with this, there are many editorial services that will now assist for a fee. Or email me for suggestions of editors that can help with this. At the end of the day, there is no secret to success. Attention to detail and a careful review of the language will hopefully improve your work.

---+ Here is the example paragraph shown in the video: " There is also evidence that compulsive buying is negatively correlated with mindfulness. Williams and Grisham (2012) tested this relation by recruiting two community samples in Australia. The first sample consisted of 49 adults who scored above established cut-off scores on two widely-used used compulsive buying questionnaires. The second sample (the “healthy controls”) consisted of 37 adults who scored below the cut-off scores on the same compulsive buying questionnaires. Both groups completed a packet of questionnaires that included a frequently-used measure of mindfulness. As predicted, the compulsive buyer group scored significantly lower in mindfulness than the healthy control group. This research study was limited by a correlational design and modest sample sizes, but had the advantage of using measures that many researchers have tested for reliability and validity. " Here is the paragraph plan shown in the video: " 1. Begin with a transition (that’s appropriate for the flow of your paper). 2. Provide a few details about the study method. 3. Clearly and concisely state the finding that is relevant to your paper. 4. To go above and beyond a typical study summary, briefly highlight major strengths and weaknesses of the study. "
