Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

Grammar: Using THE with common and abstract nouns

10:08
An abstract noun is a word that means a general concept or idea, like "life" or "friendship". We can use "the" with common nouns, as in "the sky is blue". But can we use "the" with abstract nouns? For example, would you say "happiness is important" or "the happiness is important"? If you are not sure, watch this lesson to learn when to use "the" with general and abstract nouns. Don't forget to take the quiz afterwards to test your understanding! http://www.engvid.com/grammar-the-common-abstract-nouns/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. Many English learners have trouble deciding when to use "the" or no "the", so I understand that problem, I know it can be a little bit confusing, but I believe that by the end of this lesson, you're going to find it much easier. Okay? So let's start with a little quiz first to see where you stand regarding that word "the". So, let's look at this first example. Should you say: "Life is beautiful." or "The life is beautiful."? Okay. Think about it. Decide. Another one: "Friendship is precious." or "The friendship is precious."? Which one is right? Think for yourself. We'll do one more, and then I'll give you the answers. "Happiness is important." or "The happiness is important."? Which one is correct? Do you know? How do you know? How do you decide which one is right? I'll tell you. When we're talking about something which is a general concept or idea, then we do not use "the". Okay? For example, let's take the first one. "Life is beautiful." Now, life is a general concept, so we do not need "the". So, this is the correct answer. All right? Not this. "Life is beautiful." Because life is a general idea, a general concept. Okay? We're not talking about anything specific. If we say: "The life of wise people is beautiful." that is something specific, and then we would be correct to say: "The life". Okay? But if we're just talking in general, then no "the". Let's look at the next example. "Friendship is precious." Again, friendship is a general idea or a general concept, so this is correct. Okay? In this example, this one was wrong. But if I said, for example: "The friendship between those two children is precious." then that would be fine, because now I'm specifying which friendship. Right? The friendship between those two children, so then it becomes specific, and then we would use "the". But in this example, this is correct. Okay? Just like this was, and this is wrong, because this is a general idea. Okay? Next one: "Happiness is important." By now you know, again, happiness is a general idea, a general concept, so this is correct. In this example, it would be wrong to say: "The happiness", because: The happiness of what? So, if we say: "The happiness of my family is important." that's fine. That's very good. That would be a perfect sentence. But in this case, we cannot say: "The happiness is important." because we didn't specify which happiness. Okay? So, in this case, that's wrong, and this is correct. Okay? Now, the same principle applies to these. See if you can figure it out. Okay? "I want to make money." or "I want to make the money."? Which one do you think is right? Are we speaking in general, or are we speaking specifically? Well, we are speaking in general right now, so this is correct, because we're just talking about money; we didn't say which money. I want to make money. Right? General idea. If I said, for example: "I want to make the money I need to pay my rent." that's specific, so then I could say: "the money", because I'm explaining after that which money. Okay? But in this example, no. Next one: "She wants to lose weight." or "She wants to lose the weight."? Is it general or is it specific? What do you think? It's still general. Good. By now you're getting really smart. "She wants to lose weight." is a general term. Right? We're just talking about weight in general; not any specific weight. But if I say: "She wants to lose the weight she put on during the holidays." that's specific, and then I need "the". Okay? But not in this example. So, last one here: "He needs to earn respect." or do we say: "He needs to earn the respect."? Is it general or is it specific? By now you know, you'll really know. It's general. Very good. Okay? Because we didn't talk about any specific respect; we're talking about respect in general. So: "He needs to earn respect." But if this was being used, it would be something like: "He needs to earn the respect of his peers." Peers are people your age. Okay? Or: "He needs to earn the respect of his employees." for example, or "of his parents". Then it becomes specific. Which respect? The respect of his parents, the respect of his employees. All right? So, if it was specific, then we could say "the", but when we're just talking in general, we don't need "the". "Life is beautiful.", "Friendship is precious.", "Happiness is important.", "I want to make money.", "She wants to lose weight.", "He needs to earn respect."

Exercise 8 Minutes Before Bed, See What Happens In a Month

13:53
If you just can’t find time during the day to exercise, this bedtime workout will help you stay fit, flexible, and fabulous! You’ll go to bed feeling refreshed, you’ll sleep better, and your muscles will be nice and relaxed by morning. Watch our new video to follow along with this low-impact workout. It’s quick and easy, there’s no equipment needed, and you can squeeze it in before sleep. Whether you’re an early riser and the first thing you do is head to the gym or you prefer to exercise after you have some food in your system, people who exercise enjoy better sleep than those who don’t. According to the National Sleep Foundation, people who exercise lightly see a 49% increase in quality of sleep. TIMESTAMPS: Warm-up 0:41 Squats 2:20 Donkey kicks 3:42 Push-ups 5:05 Squat and side crunch 6:25 Plank-ups 7:52 Standing crossover toe touches 9:11 Cool down 1:32 #sleepbetter #homeworkout #insomnia Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - #1. To make sure you’re bringing your knee high enough, you can bend your elbows at a 90º angle and touch your knee to your hand. To make this move harder, add a slight jump to the exercise while you bring your knees up high. - #2. If you have a hard time balancing, extend your arms as you head down, and lower them while you stand. If that’s too difficult, you can place a chair behind you to balance yourself. - #3. Avoid using momentum and letting your leg drop back down as you’ll be missing out on the workout if you do. Keep the movement controlled. - #4. For an easier approach, you can modify the exercise by letting your knees rest on the floor. - #5. This move will target your abdominals and work on your oblique muscles. It’s a great exercise to get rid of love handles. - #6. This is a killer move that will strengthen your core, and it will also tone up your arms, shoulders, glutes, and abdominals. If this is too intense, try holding an elbow plank position: hold yourself up by your forearms for as long as you can. - #7. This move involves your lower back and targets your abdominals and obliques. It will improve your flexibility and strength. - #8. Doing this cool down will ensure that your muscles are nice and loose for when you get up in the morning. 8 Abs Exercises for Beginners to Get a Flat Stomach Fast

08:31
Do you dream about beautiful 6-pack? Stop dreaming! Yes, it might seem there are too many obstacles on your path. But you’re making it all a bit more difficult than it needs to be. Here are 8 effective exercises for your abs, and they’re perfectly suitable for beginners. TIMESTAMPS: High knee taps 1:01 Russian twists 2:13 Standing bicycle crunches 3:10 Classic plank 4:00 Plank knees to elbows 4:56 Roll up 5:34 Rolling like a ball 6:24 Earthquake 7:16 #bellyfat #abs #workout Music: 1) Hackbeat by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100805 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ 2)Medium Rock by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://audionautix.com/ SUMMARY: - Athletes often use high knee taps at the beginning of their training to improve their speed, flexibility, and power. It’s a perfect warm-up exercise. - Russian twists don't only make your abdominal muscles stronger! They also train your lower back and oblique muscles. If you're done with the first part of Russian twists, let's make life a bit harder for you. - Beginners often complain standing bicycle crunches cause discomfort. If you share the sentiment, try standing bicycle crunches. They’re a good “lazy” alternative! - Classic plank is a super-effective multipurpose exercise. Even better, you can regulate how difficult it will be. - Plank knees to elbows help to strengthen your abdominal muscles, core, and shoulders. When you add a knee-to-elbow movement, it increases the intensity of the exercise. What's more, it helps you to improve your balance and train your legs. - Roll up is also a multipurpose one. It helps to tone not only your abs but also your hip flexors. In addition, it stretches your back and hamstrings. By the way, if you have tight hamstrings, bend your knees a bit, and keep your feet flat on the floor. - Rolling like a ball will help you to deeply work your abdominals while also stimulating your spine. It might be a bit difficult to roll straight and not to fall to the side at first. But the more you exercise, the more well-balanced this move gets. - Earthquake is often used in Pilates classes. To do it correctly, you need to sit with your legs and arms stretched straight ahead and your shoulders moved back. 7 Exercises to Relieve Nerve Pain In a Few Minutes

11:36
Do you suffer from sciatica? Sciatic nerve pain – it’s a shooting pain that can show up in your lower back, butt, hips, and legs. It’s a real nightmare for those who suffer from it, and many are willing to turn to surgery to get rid of it. But that’s not even necessary in over 75% of cases! One of the most effective methods to fight this kind of pain is regular therapeutic exercises. You can use a yoga mat or simply put a blanket on a flat surface. Don't forget to close all the windows and doors so that there isn’t a draft, and make sure that it's not too cold in the room! TIMESTAMPS: Exercise #1 1:19 Exercise #2 2:13 Exercise #3 3:43 Exercise #4 4:52 Exercise #5 5:28 Exercise #6 6:10 Exercise #7 Other helpful tips 6:48 #sciatica #backpain #sciaticnervepain Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - #1. “Eye of the Needle Stretch” is one of the most effective exercises you can do to relieve sciatic nerve pain. Do 2-3 reps on each leg for the best results. - #2. For this one, you’ll remain on your back with your knees bent. But this time, rest your arms alongside your body. Now raise your legs a little bit off the ground. Keep lifting and lowering them 5 times. - #3. For the last floor exercise, you'll need a tennis ball. Lie down on it so that it’s positioned right under one of your buttocks. Then, gently move to find the sore spot. - #4. This first one is actually a yoga pose! It's called “Half Lord of the Fishes” and it’s known to not only ease sciatica but also energize the spine, stimulate the work of the liver and kidneys, and give a good stretch to your muscles. - #5. The second and final exercise of this set is a lot simpler. Sit on a chair and place your left ankle on your right knee. Then, carefully lean forward while keeping your back straight. - #6. To perform our first standing exercise, you have to place one foot on an elevated surface like a chair or table while keeping your leg and toes straight. From this position, gently stretch toward this leg as close as you possibly can until you feel a clear resistance in your thigh. - #7. And to finish off the workout and remove sciatic pain for good, bend your left leg and place it on an elevated surface once again. Take a small step back with your right foot and gently stretch toward your left leg as close as possible. - Home remedies can also help you deal with this problem if it occurs way too often. One way to do it is to use essential oils, like ginger oil or peppermint oil. - Your diet also plays a bigger role here than you may think! A study conducted by Italian researchers confirmed that the regular intake of vitamin D can help treat sciatica. - Try to pay attention to your posture because it can make or break your sciatic nerve condition. Another important thing is to avoid lifting really heavy objects and try not to wear high heels too often. 10 Exercises to Become Taller In One Week

13:35
You may have different reasons for dreaming of becoming taller: to feel more comfortable with your taller partner, not to lag behind your tall family, and what not. Here're several simple exercises to do at home that will help you to increase your height. Everybody knows that the height depends on many factors: environment, hormones, your genes, and nutrition. But if you've always believed that you must just grin and bear it, think twice. It's hard but not impossible to change your height even after 25. Stretched muscles receive more blood as it circulates better in the stretched limbs. What is more, oxygen moves better in the whole body. All in all, this leads to a gradual natural stretch. Cobra Pose has several additional benefits, such as decreasing the stiffness of the lower back, increasing flexibility, strengthening your shoulders and arms, and firming and toning the buttocks. A longer neck you can get as a result of Neck Stretch will give you some additional height. There have been claims that by regular practice, vibration gymnastics can even prolong your life by decades. When your heels are raised, the largest blood vessels are filled with blood due to muscle contraction. And, when the heels are dropped back down, the blood turns around and immediately starts moving toward your heart, thus reducing the strain on it. At the same time, blood gets access to all the muscles, thus, allowing them to stretch much better. Skipping makes the whole body slimmer, and with a slimmer body, you look taller. Swimming is one of the most effective exercises to gain height. The thing is that it stretches both the body and the spine. Moreover, when a person is swimming, gravitation doesn't affect them. So, when they keep moving their muscles, this stretches the body extremely well simultaneously having a great effect on the spine while it gets longer. Don't forget to breathe properly during the exercises, relaxing and avoiding the urge to tense. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Hanging exercises 1:21 Downward Dog 2:30 Cobra Pose 3:51 Cat and Cow Stretch 4:43 Calves Stretch 6:06 Neck Stretch 7:25 Hip Flexor Stretch 8:46 Lifting up to your toes 10:18 Skipping 11:21 Swimming 12:05 SUMMARY -Try this antigravity exercise to stretch every muscle in your body stretches when you hang. -The Downward Dog exercise improves stretchability, which includes arms, legs, back, calves, and hamstrings. A well-stretched body is a taller body. -Cobra Pose helps to stretch all the muscles in your chest, shoulders, and abdominals. -Cat and Cow Stretch stretches your torso, back, and neck, what is more, it makes your spine alignment better. Also, it helps abdominal muscles get stronger, relieves back pain, and calms you down. -Calves Stretch will help you to lengthen your calf muscles. -Flexion (stretching the neck forward), and extension (stretching the neck backward) help to elongate the muscles in your neck. -Hip Flexor Stretch will super effectively stretch your hip flexors. To make the stretch more intense, lift your arms over your head and arch your body back. -Lifting up to your toes is popularly known as vibration gymnastics. By regular practice, it can even prolong your life by decades. -Skipping is a heart-pumping high-speed activity. When you skip, all the muscles and ligaments of your body stretch and contract. -The most fruitful swimming style is the breaststroke. When you use it while swimming, you extend your legs and arms straight, so your body is pulled in the opposite directions and well-stretched. Try to swim minimum five days a week for several hours, and you'll see noticeable results. 7 Easy Exercises for a Flat Stomach and Small Waist

13:19
A flat stomach and a small waist is a goal of many women, and very often even extensive workouts don’t help, or we simply don’t have enough time or will power for those. The good news is that we’ve put together a set of exercises for your abs and waist that you can do without getting up from your chair. Remember warming-up is an extremely important part of any workout. Continue with oblique twists. Thanks to them, you’ll be kissing that muffin top goodbye and saying hello to a slimmer waist and stronger abs. Forward bends develop a muscle called the Rectus Abdominis, which is the long flat muscle that helps flex the spinal column. When trained properly, it’ll give you a perfectly flat and toned tummy. Knees to the chest give a nice workout to your thigh muscles and the Rectus Abdominis muscle. Leg raises are great at getting rid of that annoying lower belly pooch we’d all love to send packing. As you strengthen your abs, doing knee circles will get easier with time. Losing weight requires not only physical training but also a healthy diet. Try to keep count of how many calories you consume according to the number recommended for your age, gender, and lifestyle. Your diet must be well-balanced. Half of your daily calorie consumption should come from carbs, 30% from proteins, and 20% from fats. Foods containing Omega-9 fatty acids will make you feel fuller longer, so you won’t overeat. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Warming-up 0:43 Oblique twists 1:42 Forward bends 2:55 Knees to the chest 3:56 Leg raises 6:23 Knee circles 8:40 Scissors 9:59 Some more useful recommendations 11:33 SUMMARY -Warming-up prepares you muscles up for working out, which is extremely important. Even if your training last just 5 minutes, you still have to get ready for it. -Oblique twists target those stubborn obliques. As a result, you’ll be kissing that muffin top goodbye and saying hello to a slimmer waist and stronger abs. -Forward bends are just as good as traditional ab exercises like crunches or sit-ups. When trained properly, they’ll give you a perfectly flat and toned tummy. -Knees to the chest exercise allows you to train both the Rectus Abdominis muscle and the obliques. Plus, even your thigh muscles get a nice workout too. -Leg raises might feel difficult, but you need to involve your legs to develop the muscles of your upper and lower abs. -Knee circles are super effective at training your upper and lower abdominal muscles as well as your obliques. -Scissors work not only your abs but also your inner thighs. -Losing weight requires not only physical training but also a healthy well-balanced diet.
