How to use Flash Cards | How to Study | Flashcards Study Tips

05:50
Hello Socratica Friends! We're here to help you be a Great Student. In this episode, we learn about the best way to use FLASH CARDS. Flash cards are a great tool to use anytime you need to memorize facts, fast. They're great for drilling vocabulary terms, learning dates in history...so many uses. The best thing about flash cards is that they help you figure out what you know, and what you don’t know. And although this may be uncomfortable, the best way to master a subject is to focus on what you DON’T know! In this video, we'll show you how we use flash cards, using an important technique known as "spaced repetition." Basically, don't try to cram in all your studying in one go! Make sure you break it up over a couple of days at least, with breaks in between. Try using flashcards following the Pomodoro method! Two fantastic techniques working together to help you be a Great Student. We recommend making flashcards the old fashioned way - with pen and paper, but if you'd like to use an app on your phone, we like Anki. Do you have a different method of studying with flash cards? THESE TOYS SHOW HOW PHYSICS WORKS

09:43
Dr Raymond Hall is a professor of Physics at California State University, Fresno. Through his toys, he reveals the real magic of physics and the Universe. Check out this amazing compilation and you’ll definitely be impressed! TIMESTAMPS: 0:01 - The Levitron This spin-stabilized magnetic levitation device can fly for about 3 minutes or more per launch. The spin rate of the magnetic top must be just right for flight – not too fast and too slow. The weight of the top must also be adjusted to within 1 gram to achieve equilibrium between the pull of gravity and the magnetic repulsion from the large donut-shaped magnet in the wood base; 0:20 - Poly Density Bottle Puzzle; White beads and blue beads "float", oddly separated beneath the surface of a clear liquid. If the contents are mixed by shaking the container, the white beads gather at the top and the blue sink to bottom! After about 30 seconds the two layers of beads slowly move back to the middle; 1:00 - Tornado Spheres; Two ball bearings welded together can be made to spin up to 2000+ rpm by the Magnus Effect using a stream of air. Shining, three-colored LEDs on the spinning pair produces an illusion of floating rings, along with the second illusion that these rings are rotating and changing direction caused by aliasing with the frame rate of the video camera; 1:29 - Reflective Wind Spinner; It translates rotating motion into a repeating, expanding circle. An interesting one of many ways to connect rotational motion to translational motion; 2:06 - Tesla’s Egg of Columbus; A copper ellipsoid egg mysteriously spins and stands upright in this modern version of Tesla’s famous demonstration from the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago that first showcased the principles behind wireless power transfer and his AC induction motor; 3:04 - Kalliroscopes; Rheoscopic fluid reveals the turbulence induced in an enclosed fluid by simple movements of the container; 3:39 - Dudeney's Dissection; An equilateral triangle can be cut into four pieces that will then assemble into a square; 4:11 - Tea-Light Floating Engine; A candle-powered, super-simple steam engine. The engine is just a coil of copper tubing filled with water. Steam builds up, pushing water out with an explosive jet, which then results in a vacuum in the coil that pulls more water in to repeat the process; 4:35 - Iron Filing Field Detector; Visualizing the invisible: the magnetic field lines around a dipole bar magnet. In the presence of a magnetic field, ferromagnetic materials temporarily become magnets; 5:04 - Magnetic Sand Hourglass; Ferromagnetic sand collects above a neodymium magnet in the wood base, creating interesting patterns that reveal the magnetic field lines; 5:40 - Diffraction Spectrum Candle; A thin plastic diffraction grating surrounds the flame in this rainbow-producing design. The rainbow spectrum is produced not by refraction like that of a prism, but instead by diffraction, where light waves deconstructively and constructively interfere; 6:07 - Water Drop Pulse Kinetic Sculpture; “Heart In A Bottle” is a kinetic art sculpture by Philippe Bouveret that utilizes the amazingly strong surface tension and adhesive properties of water. Two halves of a heart are attached to a wire spring which is periodically pulled together in a zipper-like fashion by a single drop of water; 6:57 - Poly-acrylamide Polymer Vanishing Act; These spheres of hydrophilic polymer have an almost identical index of refraction as that of water – thus when submersed, they become invisible; 7:25 - Cartesian Diver; Increasing pressure on the water compresses the air bubble in the small plastic vial, filling it up more and more with water and making the diver sink; 7:43 - Infinity Mirror Tea-light Candle; Parallel partially-mirrored panes of glass create the illusion of multiple candle flames through the physics of reflection and refraction; 8:25 - Ferrofluid Magnetic Tree Sculpture; A 'Nano Tree' by czferro with gold ferrofluid. The spiky structure is due to the balance between the forces from the focused magnetic fields; 9:15 - Eclipse; A diamagnetic levitation sculpture by Element83 inspired by the Great American Eclipse. Cast from diamagnetic Bismuth, a golden spherical neodymium magnet levitates while trapped in a tunnel within the metal. Gravitational Waves Are Awesome

09:04
Everything you need to know about gravitational waves. In February 2016 scientists announced the first detection of gravitational waves by humans on Earth. This was a huge, world changing, discovery. The gravitational waves were caused by a pair of colliding black holes 1.3 billion light years away 1.3 billion years ago. This video summaries all the of the mind blowing facts about the gravitational waves and describes LIGO, the incredibly sensitive telescope that detected them. If you would like to buy a poster you can get one here http://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/24649310-gravitational-wave-astronomy?asc=u&p=poster&rel=carousel Errata and clarifications. I endeavour to be as accurate as possible in my videos, but I am human and definitely don’t know everything, so there are sometimes mistakes. Also, because my videos are summaries of some quite complex science, I make simplifications. Some of these are intentional because I don’t have time to go into full detail, but sometimes they are unintentional and here is where I clear them up. 1. I got the month of the original detection wrong! It was September 2015, not November 2015. Silly me, my apologies. 2. “1.3 billion years ago, 1.3 billion light years away” This is incorrect and an oversight on my part. I completely forgot to take into account the expansion of the Universe. The resulting black hole is 1.3 billion light years from us today, but was closer to us when the collision happened, which means that it happened less than 1.3 billion years ago. I tried to work out exactly when but was stumped because I couldn’t find the function for the acceleration of the expansion of the universe. The redshift of the signal from the black holes was about 10%, so I thought the collision was 10% closer in time than 1.3 billion years i.e. 1.18 billion years, but I think it might be a bit more complicated than that. 3. LIGO schematic animation. I made a couple of silly errors here. The first circular mirror that the laser hits should be 90º to the way I oriented it: half the laser light is transmitted and half reflected, each one going up a different arm. 4. LIGO schematic animation. When the laser bounced back and forth it should bounce between the two suspended mirrors and not go all the way back to the diagonal mirror. 5. VIRGO is near Pisa, not at Trento as I drew on the map. I said the right thing but drew the wrong thing. My apologies. 6. ‘A second even more powerful collision.” Wrong again! The second collision was less powerful and the signal was more buried in the noise. I’m not happy with the number of flat out mistakes I made on this one! I will try better in the future. I blame it on the Christmas spirits. If you would like to find out more about gravitational waves and the detection here are the original papers and some very informative links. Understanding human behavior using physics

18:24
Hey guys, lots of people try to understand humans by using psychology, economics or even evolutionary psychology. My background is physics, so I searched for some answers that physics can give us. In fact, there is a whole subdiscipline of physics that deals with issues like race segregation, traffic flow, stock markets, human collaboration, war and peace and free will versus determinism. It is called the physics of socio-economic systems. I try to introduce it to you guys by showing how it is derived from statistical physics and later demonstrating how to model the behavior of large groups of people and their opinions using just very basic computational physics. I hope you can get some value out of this! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voter_model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ising_model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisenberg_model_(quantum) http://psoup.math.wisc.edu/extras/nlvm/nlvmsim.html https://math.berkeley.edu/~bgillesp/apps/voter/ https://www.dpg-physik.de/dpg/gliederung/fv/soe/index.html https://physics.aps.org/articles/v7/40

Thanks to observations of galaxy redshifts, we can tell that the universe is EXPANDING! Knowing that the universe is expanding and how quickly its expanding also allows us to run the clock backwards 14 billion years to the way the universe began - with a bang. Richard Ingebretsen (Physics Professor and Associate Dean for Student Affairs) and I went on Good Morning Utah (ABC 4 News) to promote The Physics of Freestyle event held on Thursday March 27, 2014 at the Eccles Center in Park City, Utah. The event was sponsored by the University of Utah's College of Science and the Park City Education Foundation. The event was designed to help K-12 students understand how science is used by winter sports athletes to make them better at their trade. People who attended learned about the physics behind skiing and snowboarding, with a look at a few common tricks used during various freestyle events. Omega Point

01:08:33
A conversation, with Frank J. Tipler (the opinions of Frank Tipler do not reflect those of the uploader) Frank Tipler is professor of mathematics and physics at Tulane university, he first earned his Ph.D for proving some important theorems in that context of General relativity, which say that closed timelike curves could not be constructed in local regions of spacetime without either violating the weak energy condition or creating a singularity. He has since become very well known in the world of physics, particularly for his popular book 'The Anthropic cosmological principle' coauthored with cosmologist John Barrow which describes in depth the fine tuning of the universe. And has subsequently published many papers and books defending key aspects of his peer reviewed Omega point cosmology and the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. The Omega Point Theory has been published in a number of prestigious peer-reviewed physics and science journals in addition to Reports on Progress in Physics, such as Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (one of the world's leading astrophysics journals), Physics Letters B, the International Journal of Theoretical Physics, etc. http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1974708 http://archive.org/details/ThePhysicsOfGodAndTheQuantumGravityTheoryOfEverything http://theophysics.host56.com/Redford-Physics-of-God.pdf Out of 50 articles, Prof. Tipler's above paper was selected as one of 12 for the "Highlights of 2005″ accolade as "the very best articles published in Reports on Progress in Physics in 2005 [Vol. 68]. Articles were selected by the Editorial Board for their outstanding reviews of the field. They all received the highest praise from our international referees and a high number of downloads from the journal Website." "... I believe that the omega-point theory deserves to become the prevailing theory of the future of spacetime ..." physicist David Deutsch, Oxford University, on page 355 of his book The Fabric of Reality (Penguin 1997) "Perhaps Tipler's most important contribution [in Physics of Immortality] is his insistence that the world as described by physics is more open to interaction with biblical and theological perspectives than is often believed." Theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg, writing in Zygon, vol. 30, June 1995 page 309. Prof. John Wheeler wrote that Chapter 10 of the book, The Anthropic cosmological principle which concerns the Omega Point Theory, "rivals in thought-provoking power any of the [other chapters]." PRL focus: http://physics.aps.org/articles/v7/109 PRL: http://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.113.175503 arXiv preprint arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/1407.4273 Abstract: We create mechanical metamaterials whose response to uniaxial compression can be programmed by lateral confinement, allowing monotonic, nonmonotonic, and hysteretic behavior. These functionalities arise from a broken rotational symmetry which causes highly nonlinear coupling of deformations along the two primary axes of these metamaterials. We introduce a soft mechanism model which captures the programmable mechanics, and outline a general design strategy for confined mechanical metamaterials. Finally, we show how inhomogeneous confinement can be explored to create multistability and giant hysteresis.

The Mighty Power of Nanomaterials: Crash Course Engineering #23

08:51
Just how small are nanomaterials? And what can we do with stuff that small? Today we’ll discuss some special properties of nanomaterials, how some can change at different sizes, and the difference between engineered nanomaterials and ones that occur naturally. We’ll also talk about some of the future research that’s needed on the use of nanomaterials. Even if you’re tiny, you can still be fierce. Here are 8 little invertebrates who punch above their weight class at dinner time.
